Backing up to DVD questions

Decided I ought to backup my iTunes Library to DVD since I have some things there I can't get back. I don't have a big library so it only took two disks (I have many .aif files).
At the top was the progress bar showing how long it would take (20 mins or so per disk).
When it was done it said, "Finishing disk... this may take an hour or so."
Wow, I thought, I guess I'll do something else. Then, doink, it was done and the disk ejected. This happened on both disks.
Did this "hour" only take a minute because of the small volume of the library, or what?
Second question, if I "consolidate" my library will this bring in any and all music files, like my GargageBand loops and files?

Did this "hour" only take a minute because of the small volume of the library, or what?
The time remaining is only an estimate.
Second question, if I "consolidate" my library will this bring in any and all music files, like my GargageBand loops and files?
No. Consolidate simply looks at everything you have in iTunes and copies them to the iTunes music folder location specified in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Consolidate is how you move your iTunes music folder to a new location.
Also, if you have *Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library*, unchecked and add music to iTunes, iTunes will use the file wherever it is located and not copy it to the iTunes music folder.
Consolidate will copy them into the iTunes music folder.

  • HELP!How to create HD disc that will play back in HD DVD or Blu-Ray player?

Footage comes from Panasonic HVX200 as DVCPRO HD 1080i60, all appropriate settings made in FCP5 to edit. Have already made SD DVD, whoopie.
Now client is interested in real HD version that they can play back on HD DVD or Blu-Ray set top unit. Of all my research, I've discovered little about how to make a "real" HD video disc. OSX doesn't support Blu-Ray burning, OK. What about HD DVD burning support? And what drive to purchase for this application?
I understand DVD Studio will allow me to author a disc with HD content...that I can burn onto DVD5. Useless to the client. Need to burn on either Blu-Ray or HD DVD media.
Aside from encoding in Compressor, what do I do when I need to make this HD disc happen? Compressor step seems easy enough to figure out. Just very unclear on how to burn out appropriate video disc.
    Thanks for your help.

    For Blu-Ray creation:
I'm curious if DVDit! works in parallels too, though it will certainly work in BootCamp. The question is what format should FCP/Compressor output to in order for DVDIt, etc. on BC or Parallels need in order to create the disc?
MPEG-2 and H.264 should work, but who knows?
In the meantime, I have HDV source footage that I edit. I print the final edit back to HDV for archiving, and burn a HD-DVD on a DL DVD+R red laser disc to show on my Toshiba HD-DVD player using DVDSP. It works, and I can get about 40 minutes of MPEG-2/HDV on there without transcoding at 1080i and it looks fantastic.
In the future, I hope to be able to dump the HDV final edit onto a Blu-Ray disc. I'm guessing Adobe Encore will be needed on the Mac for that.
The point here is there certainly are options that work. I do wish Apple added Blu-Ray burning capability.
There's still room for that, however... FCS 1 (and even now 2, with AVCHD support, albeit non-native) have histories of adding new support for codecs, etc. in free updates.

  • Final DVD Question

I just finished compressing a video with the best setting for DVD. I notice when I watch back in my DVD player there is one part of the clip that has scrolling text. That part the text is blurry when it wasn't on my original FCP sessions. What do I need to adjust to fix that?
    Thanks!

This is your LAST question about DVDs or this is a question about the last DVD you will ever do?
You will need to view your DVD on a TV set and tell us what you see to determine what we tell you next. "Blurry" is a bit subjective.

  • Archive back ups on DVDs in Lightroom

I'm in the process of importing (MOVING) all images into Lightroom as my ONLY image storage. It's possible to download files to DVD on IMPORT BUT WHY BACK UP images that may be culled once in Lightroom? I've set the schedule for back up to hard drive in Lightroom and also back up to an external drive. So, do I have to EXPORT the keepers, then re-IMPORT them in order to back up to DVDs? Seems like the long way around. Just forget about DVDs? Am I missing something here?
Also, which is the proper location for FOLDERS -- lr.cat or lr.data?

    Hi Joia.
I'm a bit late on this but wanted to ask if you are backing up your catalog. (the Ircat file)? And your pictures where ever they are.
I haven't used Lightroom since my trial ended. Am waiting for a couple of features before I buy it. But have learned from losing a lot of work that backups are a high priority. I "think" you can just copy the Ircat file to an external hard drive. You can probably find the answer to that by a search for "backup" or "backing up" in the forum.
By the way, it IS a good idea to also back your pictures up to DVDs periodically. It's often recommended by professionals and those who care about their pictures. Hard drives fail. Two hard drives can fail. When I lost a year of work, I had three backups and all three failed at the same time, though I imagine that is rare.
The best way is to back up your pictures (and catalog) to an external hard drive and then to DVDs once a week or month depending on how many new ones you take. How much work are you comfortable with losing?
It is much easier to store a DVDs backup set in another place. I have a safety deposit box for one set and store another at my daughter's house because it is more accessible there. If we have a fire or theft, at least my photos won't be lost.
Please don't be embarrassed about asking questions. We all had to start from the beginning. Sometimes questions are noticed and answered generously by helpful people on this forum. Other times I haven't had any answers. It's worth a try.
I think it's great that you are not letting age stop you from learning a new hobby. My husband is 76 and he won't go near a computer. I don't pick new things up easily like I did when I was younger and it can be frustrating. But you will gradually understand more as you continue.
    Blessings,
    Peggy

  • HT201250 I have mac 10.6.8 and wanted to back up to DVDs. How can I do it?

I have mac 10.6.8 and want to back up everything on DVDs. Is it possible, if it is how can I do it?

Backing up to DVDs is a time-wasting exercise and doesn't provide you with a bootable alternative. I suggest that you invest in an ext FWHD and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone onto it. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4449562?start=0&tstart=0 for more on this.
BTW, don't let the recall notice scare you into getting it replaced immediately. If there's nothing wrong with the HD, prepare for getting it replaced, but only after you've followed all the steps outlined above. FWIW, if you're within 50 miles of an Apple repair station, they most likely will do an onsite repair since it's a desktop machine.

Drag the folders to the external drive, and if prompted, click Authenticate. You'll probably be asked for an administrator password.

  • My second post!  Backing up to DVD?

How do you guys back up your songs/projects? I was told that backing up to DVD is a good way to do it, but I don't know how.

    One further thought.
If you use many third party components to create your songs with you might want to lock those tracks and create freeze files before you burn to a DVD.
In this way you will not be completely dependent on those third party AU's and AU synths should you come back at a later date to remaster your songs.
Last year out of stupid curiosity I played around with some of my OS X files and the outcome was that I ended up losing many of my third party AU's. It took me a long time before I could replace them and was unable to play or remaster many songs.
Often an update for an AU comes along and is a bit different than the previous version and this can cause a problem or two.
If you archive without freeze files you may wish you had later on in a year or two.

  • Misc questions - Old Toad - back up to dvd's and iphoto database files

    Old Toad
    Burning dvd's for back up.
I see that if I command-click Event folders the size increases down where it says information in the left bottom corner. Keep it to 4gig or less for each dvd. That works for me. When doing this does it also save any keywords etc.
I would happily go through my library this way to get a secure iphoto archive. Safest way... no?
If I did have to restore from these, what happens... is it like re-importing them, like Import to library under file menu.
(I haven't decided on an external back up HD system yet. Plus they can fail too. Right now I have 3 computers, they can talk via ethernet. One has an additional internal which i've been using to back up Mail, Ical, Address book, and other info like plist etc. Including my wife and 2 kids, I have 4 users to manage.)
Thanks for any advice you have.
ps./ I went to your site. What's up with this font - HelveticaNeue.dfont. Do I need this?
I downloaded the iphoto db back up. Will readme to figure out. (where exactly does the iphoto database file exist)
    Thanks again.
    Dave Stamm

    David:
If you use the Share->Burn menu option you will preserve the keywords, comments and titles.
Burning to DVD is a good way to archive the photos for later use in iPhoto if necessary. To get those photos back into an iPhoto library just mount the disk with iPhoto open. It will show up in the left hand pane under the Events and Photos icon. Drag the entire disk icon or drag individual albums or events (not shown in the video screenshot below) onto the Events icon like this.
However, for a way to quickly recover from a damaged library I suggest a backup copy of the library on a second hard drive. You can perform incremental backups of the library, copying only new or editied files, with a backup application like Synk. It only takes about a minute or less to perform an incremental backup. There are several other backup applications that can do incremental backups on iPhoto Library packages. Yes external HDs can fail but having both fail at the same time would be unusual unless you were to experience a power surge that would blow everything powered up. I have an external HD that I only turn on when I do a backup of specific files and folders (in addition to Time Machine), daily or every other day.
The Helvetica Neue font is what iPhoto 8 uses for Event titles, the number of photos selected and being dragged, etc. If it is missing or deactivated you wouldn't be able to change Event names or click and drag photos. If you're not having that problem there's nothing to worry about.
The database file resides inside the iPhoto Library package which is in the Pictures folder (default location).

  • HDV to Blu-Ray and DVD questions!

So I shot a bunch of footage that I need to turn into a DVD and Blu-Ray. I have some questions regarding these 2 issues.
First of all, I captured all the footage HDV settings 1440 x 1080. I am using Final Cut Pro 5. I am having some issues with the footage trying to multicam edit. It's making me render it out, which takes about 8 hours for 20 minutes.
What is the best way to go from HDV back to DV so I can put it on DVD? Can I export straight from the HDV footage to mpeg2 or is there a different way I should go about it?
My next question is. For Blu-Ray video, how do I export the HDV footage in FCP so I can use it in Adobe Encore? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The easiest way to convert HDV to DV is to use the camera or deck to do this Down Convert.
Edit and export to Compressor for DVD.
Multiclip editing is not something I can help you with as I haven't had any success with it.
For Encore you could export as a self contained .mov then import into Encore. You might want to try working with Compressor first.
    Good Luck

I have 8 gig of photos not in iphoto how do I back them up on to a dvd?
    iMac g3, iBook12, 'Minimac superdrive'   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Assuming you are talking about the Mac Mini, and it has Tiger, you can use Burn Folders to burn your DVDs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2154.html
If you are talking a different operating system, or one of your other computers in your profile, please let me know what kind of optical drive, and which operating system it has. If you don't know how to find an answer to either question, I can direct you.

  • 915G combo HDD CD-DVD question

Hi I have a new 915G combo MB with latest bios etc.
Here is the question, i have Boot Hdd on the blue IDE1 as c/s the 2 CD-DVD CD/R-RW on IDE 2 as c/s,
    in bios it reports
    Pri master       not detected
    pri secondary   not detected
    sec master      not detected
    sec secondary not detected
    thi master       detected maxtor 160gb
    thi secondary   not detected
the 2 CD rom detected in raid.
Ok it works but why isnt the maxtor detected as primary master as normal when in IDE1 slot?
also why the bios does not detect the 2 CD roms.
Also if i disable the on board raid, and use IDE bus mastering in bios the HDD light is lit all the time.
Thanks for any help on this
    All the best Thomas

IDE bus mastering is not for the RAID controller. Check in the Integrated Peripherals, look for the RAID controller settings, either it's disabled, RAID, or IDE. If you only seen Disabled and RAID, then you'll need to go into the RAID controller setup instead of BIOS setup to change to IDE. If still can't do this, then you have to follow my suggestion in the first place.
I guess you've already have the perception on MSI board and I don't think anyone can convince you further. Good luck to you on whatever board you use in the future. You're welcome back here if you have any MSI related questions.

  • [SOLVED] Rip or play back audio/video DVD

Recently I bought a DVD that contains audio content as well as video content. On the packaging it says that it is in the "DVD Audio/Video" format.
Today I wanted to rip or at least play back this DVD on my computer. When inserting a "normal" video DVD into the disk drive, the DE which I am using (Gnome 3.12) displays a notification that offers the possibility to start playback of the inserted DVD. No such notification was displayed for the DVD in question.
Since anyway my original intention was to rip the DVD to my hard drive, this didn't bother me much and I started looking for a program for ripping DVDs. This research resulted in me installing dvd::rip.
Unfortunately, upon trying to the read the table of contents of the DVD, dvd::rip displays the below error message:
Job 'Determine number of titles' failed with error message:
    Command exits with failure code:
    Command: execflow tcprobe -H 10 -i \/dev\/sr0 && echo EXECFLOW_OK
Output: libdvdread: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading
    [[31;1mtcprobe[0m][31;1m critical[0m: unrecognized filetype for '/dev/sr0'
While googling for problems with DVD playback in Arch, I came across some generic solutions that didn't solve the problem, namely adding my user to the audio, video, and optical groups as well as installing packages for handling DVDs (libdvdread, libdvdcss, libdvdnav).
Is there someone who has managed to rip or play back DVDs in the "DVD Audio/Video" format?

Can you mount the disk and see its file system?  If it is a DVD, you should be able to do this, regardless of and CSS.
Is there any chance this a VCD (Video CD)?

  • Slideshow on a DVD questions

    Hi...
2 questions about the adding a slideshow to a DVD using iDVD 08. Are you only able to allow one type of transition for the slideshow? I really would like to have an option where it randomly switches between types of transitions. Seeing the same transition for hundreds of photos is boring to me. Also, I chose the page turn transition to test out the slideshow on a DVD and it seems that right before it turns the page the picture goes blurry. Has anyone else noticed this? Please tell me there is a fix for this... and also a way to do multiple transitions on a finished DVD slideshow.
    Thanks!!

+right before it turns the page the picture goes blurry+
I have the same issue, and it happens with several different transition types (I tried dissolve, page turn, and cube and they all had the problem...) To me it looks like a glitch in the rendering process as it happens right before every transition starts, and the last picture of each slideshow (which has no subsequent transition) has no blur. Sadly, I have this problem with iDVD 6.0.3 and I was hoping that upgrading to iLife 08 might bring a fix.
I did notice, that the problem is most evident on my HD tv with a Panasonic DMR-EH75V DVD player. On my Macbook the problem is still unacceptably noticable, but not quite as bad. On a G3-powered slot loading iMac, the picture blur is nearly imperceptable. Finally on my old standard TV with a Samsung DVD-V1000 there is no hint of the blur problem.
It may be that changing settings on the DVD player can reduce or eliminate the blur, but for me that is not really an acceptable solution because I am creating a Wedding DVD for some clients and I have no idea what kind of hardware they will end up playing it back on.
