Backing up to External HD - Applications

I'm doing a full back up of everything on my HD.
I've copied all the folders I want to the external except the applications folder.
When I try to copy the Applications folder it estimates the time to be around 28hours then starts copying.
Any reason why its this slow? Anything I can do differently?

I suggest you are going about things all wrong. If you want to do a full backup then do this:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup drive or volume.
Source means the startup drive or volume.
You cannot make a proper backup by simply copying files to the backup drive. And, be sure you first prepare the backup drive correctly:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. Repeat Steps 4-6 for each volume/partition you created in Step 3, if more than one.

  • Will Time Capsule back-up an external hard drive that is connected to it directly via USB?

I'm considering a macbook air, but I have ~200GB of music and photos that currently lives on another laptop (and is manually backed up to a 500GB ext. hard drive).  Ideal set-up would be as follows:
    1. MBA (128GB) with just the OS, applications and ~ 5GB of .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc.
    2. The 500GB hard drive (loaded w/ music and jpegs' and permanently connected to Time Capsule so that I don't have to plug it into the MBA everytime I want to use music/jpegs)
    3. Time capsule (constantly backing up the MBA and hard drive via time machine).
Does anybody know if this is possible (i.e. will the TC back up an external hard drive that is permanently attached to it, rather than attached to a Mac?)
Does anybody have other suggestions (without having to buy any more gear) for storage/back-up that don't require that I plug that external HD to a computer every time I want to access the data?

No, sorry, Time Machine cannot back up from a network location.

The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync (and probably others) can back up from a network location.

Iphoto is a different paradigm than you're used to. I don't understand why you are trying to transfer your edited photos back to an external disk.

  • Can we wrap a RFC as webservice  and use from external java application ?

    Hi Friends ,
Our scenario is  call a webservice ( wrapped form of RFC)  from a external  java application  which will pass the input to that webservice and get back the result  .
How XI will play a role here ?
Can we wrap a rfc as web service  ?
                           Any blogs for that ?
Can you please give a brief details about this ?
                          Expecting yoour asap

    Hi
Can we wrap a rfc as web service ?
    Yes.
<i>To use the SAP Web AS 6.40 you need to build a wrapper in the 6.40 system. This is a remote function call (RFC) enabled function module with the same interface or a similar interface that internally calls the required RFC-enabled function module in the old 4.6x system via RFC. The wrapper then can be exposed to the outside world as a Web service. Another option is to use the Integration Broker capabilities for calling Web services in an older system.</i>
How XI will play a role here ?
XI will pass the input to the external java application and get back the result to the webservice

  • How to reflect data changes back to the external XML

    Hi,
    In one of my application,
I use data for (any of) my Flex component from an external XML (thru a HTTPService) request & a Java backend function provides the XML data.
I bind the HTTPService result to XMLListCollection & I supply this data for the dataprovider for my component.
So, if I make any data changes (by adding / creating new items ) in the component, it will be reflected in the XMLListCollection (resulting in adding / modifying new nodes)
My Question is how to make these data changes reflect back in the external XML?
    - Sen

Well not necessarily. While binding directly to the service in view is fast is
also not very clean and reusable. Try to put your data inside model classes,
view binds to those classes instead of the service. Also use a custom class to
wrap your service and that gives you flexibility to change server properties or
make 2 different calls with the same service. You need to write code yourself
but in the end it will be easier to adjust changes. So when you load data you
actually populate the model instead of bringing data straight to the view. This
code usually gets executed inside a command class. So to be more specific:
    CustomService
    - var HTTPService
    function getData
-- in here you have the service calling the get data method on the service
    function setData
-- in here you have the service calling the save data on the server
    View
    var model:DataModel
    - controls binds to the model and display data from model
    - when click on save or whatever gesture you use for saving you dispatch an
    event with the new data.
You  should use some MVC framework to do this for you..
When event is dispatched the framework will create a command class instance and
    run it ...
    GetSaveCommand
    - var service:CustomService
    service.saveData(event.Data)
    service.getData()
    function result()
function fault() - for the success or fault of the service call ...
you can perform additional data transformation here id needed or employ the use
of other class to do that if necessary ...
Hope this makes sense. It is more work involved as you can see.
Or you can go with 2 HTTPService instance in the view ...

  • Time Machine won't back up OWC external drive

Mac Mini running 10.8.5.  Time Machine will not back up brand new OWC MiniStack external HD. I've trashed TM prefs, reformatted the TM drive, verified that there are no exclusions, but it won't back up the external HD which contains only data files -- no system, no applications.  TM does back up the internal HD.

    PROBLEM SOLVED.
Recap: Time Machine would not back up an external data drive despite being correctly formatted and settings correctly applied.
Problem was either:  a) the Mac, b) the external data drive, c) the Time Machine drive, or d) the data.
I replaced both the external data drive (cloned) and the Time Machine drive, but Time Machine would back up that external drive either.
Finally, instead of CLONING (SuperDuper) the external data drive, I COPIED the data to a new HD -- root folder-by-folder. Now Time Machine again backs up my external hard drive.
SOLUTION:  Problem was not hard drives or Mac, but within the data itself.  Cloning the data simply passed on the problem to the new hard drive.  For this problem, the solution was copying the data rather than cloning.
    Thanks all.

  • Why can't I back up my external HD to a Time Capsule using Time Machine?

I have 2 external Hard Drives attached to my Mac Air. I want to back them both up to my new 2G Time Machine, but here is the wierd thing. When I go to the time machine preferences both disks are shown in the exclude from back-up pane but only one can be removed (which i presume means it will be backed up)
the external HD that can be removed from the "exclude items from back up" is an iomega
the external HD that cannot be removed is a My Book.
Any thoughts on why this might be and what I can do to rectify the situation
    Cheers

Connect the drive directly to your Mac
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in the left panel. Info about the drive will be displayed at the bottom of the window.
To format the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
First transfer the data that is currently on the drive to another drive for safekeeping as the new format will erase the drive.
Once the data is transferred, then in Disk Utility, click the Erase tab
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format of choice
Click Erase the drive will be reformatted.
Transfer the data back onto the drive
Try to backup using Time Machine

  • External WD application

    Hi Friends,
Is it possible to have an external WD application iView on the same page? I have this application in the public part of a development component and i have used plugs to navigate between the iViews. But i dont want the called application to be displayed in a new page.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nathan.

    Hi Nathan,
Yes, you can have an external Application component in the same iView... follow the steps..
    1. Create a Viewset and corresponding Layout as per ur requirement.
    2. Now make a right click to embed the iviews and choose "Embed Interface View of a component instance" and click Next
    3. Select the component interface view Component Instances -> InternalComponent<InternalInterface> ->  <InterfaceView> and confirm with Finish.
    4. Now u can find the iView of the other component in ur viewset... now u can control the component by creating a instance of it using CreateComponent() and destroy it using DeleteComponent()... like the one below:
    wdThis.wdGetInternalComponentComponentUsage().createComponent();
    wdThis.wdGetInternalComponentComponentUsage().deleteComponent();
Hope it helps...revert back if u have further queries...

  • How to back up an external hard drive using Time Machine

I have a Macbook. I have iTunes. I have my iTunes folder and contents stored on an external (Lacie) hard drive. I want to be able to back up that external (Lacie) hard drive and my mac using Time Machine to a separate external hard drive. At the moment it is only my mac that is backed up, and not the Lacie.  How can I also back up the Lacie so that only the recently added iTunes content is added? Cheers.

You may consider reading the detail in what third-party clone utilities could
do in regard to a backup clone and then use their utility to update that clone.
Once the copy/clone is made (a bootable backup, btw) the same utility can
be used to update the clone. Not certain how it works, and am a bit behind
on making backup bootable clones of my several Macs as it is. I do a whole
backup clone, though a partial or update supposedly is possible.
SuperDuper or CarbonCopy, I don't remember if one of them or both, do this.
    Good luck in any event!

  • I can not get Time Machine to back up an external WD Passport 2 TB drive!  Has anyone else had this problem?  The drive is new and I was running Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion and it still won't do it.  Time Machine backs up the internal drive fine.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook.  I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine.  In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails.  Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced.  I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times.  I have tried using USB drive and FireWire.  Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected.  Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not.  Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive.  Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done?  Any ideas why this wont work?  I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

Safari problem:  when I switch back into safari from another application, the menu bar comes up but no tabs or windows.  What's going on?  Just started yesterday.  I have found a workaround: when I Command Tab back to safari, I hit command T to open a new tab and Command W to close it, and my other tabs are visible.
I have tried shutting down, closing tabs, with no success.  What's going on and how can I fix it?
    Thanks,

PS:  I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion  v10.8 Mountain Lion
It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

  • How can I tell if Time Machine is backing up my external HD?

Mac Newbie here. I just have a quick question: I have two external HD hooked up to my 2012 iMac, one holding media files (not iTunes, just miscellaneous avi and mkv type files) and the other serving as the backup drive for use with Time Machine. When I first hooked up the media external HD, the OS asked me if I wanted to use it with Time Machine. Interpreting that as a request to use it as the backup drive, I replied "no." Then when I hooked up the second external HD, I replied "yes" when asked if I wanted to use it with Time Machine.
Since that time, Time Machine has been running smoothly, but I'm not sure if it is backing up both my internal HD and my external HD #1 used for media files. When I open Time Machine using Launchpad, it shows me a picture of Finder listing all my different hard drives, but only in the "now" timeframe. When I go back a few backups, the external HD used for media files is grayed out. Does that mean it has not been backing up my external HD files? If so, how do I tell it to include that external HD in the backup process?
Note that I am trying to backup contents of one external HD (including my internal HD) to another - the internal HD has 1 TB, the first external HD has 2 TB, and the second external HD has 3 TB (this is the one I'm using as the backup drive). So I think I should be ok from a space standpoint.

Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options and see Excluded Items. If the external drive is there, it's not being backed up

  • Can time machine be used to back up one external drive to another external drive?

I use the photography program Lightroom to organize and develop digital photos.  All my photos are stored on my iMac internal drive.  The internal drive is almost full so I want to move my photos to a new external drive.  At present, I have an external drive devoted to backing up my iMac using time machine.  I have no need to change this arrangement.  I would like to use a new external drive to serve as the primary location for my pictures, which I will move from the internal drive.  Then I would like to backup that drive to a third external back up drive.  Can time machine be used to automatically back up the second drive to the third drive as well as for continuing to provide ongoing backups to my internal drive as it is currently doing?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Thanks for the links, but I don't see in the pondini links, the scenario I am asking about.
Time Machine can easily back up multiple internal and/or directly-connected external drives and partitions simultaneously (but Time Machine cannotback up data that's on a network).
    From the first link.

the confusion starts in your above statement...
There should be Only One Time Machine Drive.

  • Backing up an external hard drive with time Machine

I backed up my internal disk with Time Machine, but I can not back up an external drive that I use for my media. I see the drive in the options part of Time Machine system preferences, but the minus sign to take it off of the "do not back up these drives" is blanked out. Any suggestions?

I successfully backed up the contents of an external hard drive, but the next time Time Machine did a backup, I didn't happen to have that drive connected, so Time Machine said it couldn't find it and deleted the existing backup. Is there any way to get it to keep the backup? The drive I want to back up is only used occasionally (naturally, anything I use more frequently is on my Mac) and I don't want to have to plug in both hard drives every time I want to run a backup, only to risk losing all of that history if I ever accidentally plug in only the backup drive. But I do want to keep Time Machine backups of that drive because it contains my iPhoto Library.
