Backing up to external!? help!

i have a 250GB external HD and i want to backup my settings, apps and pictures, movies, documents etc.
So is there like a step by step or program that is easy to use.
im pretty knowledgable when it comes to macs i just cant seem to grasp this external HD and formatting stuff haha
but i thank you all for the help i really appreciate it!!

As others have stated SuperDuper is the way to go if you want a bootable, complete "clone" of your system as it is on the MacBook.
Now you have a large HD to work with so space isn't a problem. So in this instance you probably would be best served doing a clone but you're on the right track by wanting to back up you personal stuff. In this case the best thing is just dragging your User folder over to the external drive. That will copy all your stuff in your Music, Movies, Pictures, Documents, and all of your settings and preferences. That assumes that you haven't moved stuff to other locations. But most of the time the User folder contains all the things that would be hard to replace. It's where you'd start if you were backing up to a DVD or CD's.
When you use SuperDuper you're getting EVERYTHING. Sometimes that's a bit overkill for some (I actually use it so I'm not knocking it). For the most part if you need to reinstall everything you can just use your discs that came with the MacBook and reinstall all your third party apps either by downloading them or by using their discs.
But again you have a lot of space so you might as well clone. What you need to do is first format the drive. When you plug it in it may or may not be visible on the desktop. Whichever you need to go to Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility and open it. Select the drive (which should be visible there on the left) and then the "Erase" tab. The volume format should be "Mac OS Extended (either journaled or not). I run journaled. You can also do this in the "Partition" tab and that basically breaks the HD into sections. This is probably what you want so you can put your clone on one part and leave another for extra data, etc. Make sure if you use this option you give yourself enough space. Once you get the sizes where you want just click on the partition button and you should be ready to go.
If you go with SuperDuper you'll be able to see what you want when you run it. Basically you'll be going from Macintosh HD (or whatever you have your HD named) to your external (again whatever you named it).

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

Iphoto is a different paradigm than you're used to. I don't understand why you are trying to transfer your edited photos back to an external disk.

  • I can not get Time Machine to back up an external WD Passport 2 TB drive!  Has anyone else had this problem?  The drive is new and I was running Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion and it still won't do it.  Time Machine backs up the internal drive fine.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook.  I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine.  In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails.  Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced.  I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times.  I have tried using USB drive and FireWire.  Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected.  Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not.  Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive.  Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done?  Any ideas why this wont work?  I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Is it possible to back up an external hard drive to Time Machine from two different computers without creating two different records?

I have an external hard drive that I do my work on. I use it on my office MacPro and on my MacBook Pro. I have Time Machine setup on both computers to back up the external hard drive to a remote backup drive, but when it backs it up, the backup goes into either the MacPro record of it, or the MacBook Pro record. The effect of this is that if I'm at my laptop and I need to access an earlier version of a file that existed when I was working on my MacPro, I can't access it.
Is it at all possible to create a universal record (or Sparse Disk Image Bundle to use Apple lingo) for my external hard drive?

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for your help as always, sorry I never thanked you earlier, finally got some time to attend this.
I'm in the mail folder in the library of my user name. Just to make sure I get all my mail boxes I'm going to archive simply the whole 'Mail' folder after going in to the library of my unsername.
I notice you mentioned about importing there .... I've seen the .emix files you mention .... i have 30,000+ of them.
What I find helpful in mail is that if I type a client's second name, in this case 'Lopez' I can pull up all the mails relating to him in an instant, around 450. Obviously it would be impossible to pick through 30K .emix files to find the right ones .... so could I easily import them in to my Mail on my new computer?
Could I select the whole lot of them, then drag and drop them in to my new Mail on the new computer, and then use the search function on Mail? ... the normal desktop search function doesn't seem to look through the emix files, or emails for that matter.
Also, just as an extra precaution, could I make a smart folder in Mail with the name of said client for example for, then archive that folder separately?
    TY

  • Using Time Machine to back up an external hard drive

    Hi,
This has probably been asked a lot but i'm struggling to find an answer. I want to back up my external hard drive using Time Machine but i'm not sure how to do it?
Is there a way that I can connect my external hdd and create a back up that is stored on my mac?
If this was possible, does Time Machine take a snapshot or does it duplicate the data (in other words would this take up a huge amount of storage on my laptop)?
I don't use Time Machine as I generally don't store anything on my laptop, but my external HDD holds all my photos.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Hannah

  • Time Machine not backing up other external hard drive

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard and am trying to use Time Machine. I have one external hard drive that is used specifically for the Time Machine Backup, it's called "Backup Drive". The other hard drive is called "Captured Memories" and is used to store my graphic design files. Time Machine seems to backup my iMac because there is a folder called iMac and it contains the files, but the folder for Captured Memories is blank. I was getting errors saying that the backup failed but when I clicked the "Back Up Now" option on Time Machine, it doesn't list the error - but the Captured Memories folder is still blank so it didn't back up that external drive. I also changed the Spotlight preferences so that it does not search the Backup Drive.
Both the Backup Drive and the Captured Memories drives are the same, they're both Seagate Free Agent Pro drives, 1TB each.
The Free Agent Pro drives both have a sleep timer that I cannot adjust, does that have anything to do with why Time Machine won't backup the Captured Memories drive? If that is the case, what other software can I use to backup the Captured Memories external drive? I want it to sync to the Backup Drive because I am constantly saving and moving files around on the Captured Memories drive.
I was using a Memeo backup software that came with the Free Agent Pro drives but the problem I was having is it would make copies of files rather than move them. For example, I have a folder on the Captured Memories drive that is called, In Progress and one that is called In Proofing. So once a project is complete, I move the file to the In Proofing folder. The Memeo software would copy the file to the In Proofing folder rather than move it. So I'd end up with 2 copies of the file, one in the In Progress folder and one in the In Proofing folder.
Does anyone know how I can simply have the drive backed up like that?
    What do I do?
Please help! I really need to make sure that the Captured Memories external drive is being backed up!

I am having a similar problem. I initially set it up 3 days ago and had it back up just the iMac to Time Capsule (about 120 GB) which it did no problem (I initially had my LaCie drive excluded). I then un-excluded my other drive, where all my photos and music reside (about 130 GB). Since then, it keeps trying to back up about 102 GB each time. Looking at the list of backups it does not appear that it has ever successfully backed up the LaCie. I am not aware of any error messages, but I have not been home much. I normally shut down the computer at night but I have been leaving it on trying to let Time Machine do its thing. All I can say is that every time I am at the computer TM is running and it always looks like it is in the middle of backing up 102 GB (usually seems to be near the beginning, never seem to see it more than halfway done). Looking at the TM panel it says the latest backup was 2 days ago. I'd appreciate any advice!

  • Backing up an external disk: journaled or not journaled, that´s the questio

I try to back up an external firewire disk in addition to my internal MBP system disk. The external drive is Mac OS extended formatted (at least that´s what disk utility tells me) but journaling is off. Time machine doesn´t recognise the disk, is this due to the fact that journaling is off? Can I just switch lournaling on (using Cocktail or disc utility) or will I have to reformat the drive?
    Thanks for your help
    Best regards
    Wolfgang F.

Actually, after checking again (the drive I wanted to backup wasn´t appearing in the TM list at all) I realised that the directory information was corrupted. I repaired it using TechTols and now it appears in the TM list so that I can include it in for the backup process. As you said, it has nothing to do with journaling being on or of it only has to be HFS+ formatted.
Thanks very much for your help

  • How can I keep Time Machine from Automatically backing up any external drive connected

Problem: Whenever I have an external drive attached and TimeMachine starts, it tries to back-up the drive.  Usually, this causes Time Machine to gut my TimeMachine back-ups to try and make room before saying, not enough space to complete the back-up.  NOT Helpful!  I maintain offline/offsite clones of my drives but I also receive drives with large amounts of data which I will want backed up AFTER I have copied it to my drives.  Yes, I can go into TimeMachine and exclude the drive(s).  If I forget to do that, then BYE BYE back-ups.
Ideally, I would like a prompt asking if I want to include the drive in theTimeMachine back-up after I connect it.  Anyone know how to set this?
    or
I would be fine with simply having TimeMachine treat all drives unknown to the backup as drives to be ignored.
    Thoughts?

It worked beautifully before and would update only when I plugged the firewire drive in and also if I left it over 10 days it would remind me to back up the computer.
Right, the behavior hasn't changed between SL and Lion.
I would have liked the option to set times / days when I wanted.
SL didn't have this, any more than Lion does.
Also now I have a greyed out icon with a warning sign and clicking on the preferences it helpfully tells me the last back up has failed.
    Because it DID.
I am usually happy with the updates and tweaks but this is one I am not happy and would appreciate a solution or at least a work around.... and no I don't like having the default to Time Machine as off!
Time Machine hasn't significantly changed between SL and Lion.  Well, other than the local HD backup sets when a portable device is away from the actual backup destination, which really seem to freak people out for some reason.

On the bottom bar of the window (on the left iPhoto 11, on the right in other versions) note the slider. Drag it left.

  • How to back up an external hard drive using Time Machine

I have a Macbook. I have iTunes. I have my iTunes folder and contents stored on an external (Lacie) hard drive. I want to be able to back up that external (Lacie) hard drive and my mac using Time Machine to a separate external hard drive. At the moment it is only my mac that is backed up, and not the Lacie.  How can I also back up the Lacie so that only the recently added iTunes content is added? Cheers.

You may consider reading the detail in what third-party clone utilities could
do in regard to a backup clone and then use their utility to update that clone.
Once the copy/clone is made (a bootable backup, btw) the same utility can
be used to update the clone. Not certain how it works, and am a bit behind
on making backup bootable clones of my several Macs as it is. I do a whole
backup clone, though a partial or update supposedly is possible.
SuperDuper or CarbonCopy, I don't remember if one of them or both, do this.
    Good luck in any event!

  • Hi Friends... I'm trying to delete a back-up file on mu TC but I get the message "The operation could not be completed because the item "bands" is in use. I'd like to start the Back from scratch, could help me out with deleting the current file?

I’m trying to delete a back-up file on mu TC but I get the message “The operation could not be completed because the item “bands” is in use. I’d like to start the Back from scratch, could help me out with deleting the current file?

Sorry, I am very confused. I asked the following question....
Is this the only backup file on your Mac, or do you have other backup files and data on the Time Capsule disk?
The answer that you gave was....
    This is the only one
    Now you are saying that....
But I have lots of other files on Time Capsule! The back up file is only one of them.
    Can you clarify, please?

  • How can I tell if Time Machine is backing up my external HD?

Mac Newbie here. I just have a quick question: I have two external HD hooked up to my 2012 iMac, one holding media files (not iTunes, just miscellaneous avi and mkv type files) and the other serving as the backup drive for use with Time Machine. When I first hooked up the media external HD, the OS asked me if I wanted to use it with Time Machine. Interpreting that as a request to use it as the backup drive, I replied "no." Then when I hooked up the second external HD, I replied "yes" when asked if I wanted to use it with Time Machine.
Since that time, Time Machine has been running smoothly, but I'm not sure if it is backing up both my internal HD and my external HD #1 used for media files. When I open Time Machine using Launchpad, it shows me a picture of Finder listing all my different hard drives, but only in the "now" timeframe. When I go back a few backups, the external HD used for media files is grayed out. Does that mean it has not been backing up my external HD files? If so, how do I tell it to include that external HD in the backup process?
Note that I am trying to backup contents of one external HD (including my internal HD) to another - the internal HD has 1 TB, the first external HD has 2 TB, and the second external HD has 3 TB (this is the one I'm using as the backup drive). So I think I should be ok from a space standpoint.

Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options and see Excluded Items. If the external drive is there, it's not being backed up

It will be backed up on your computer and can later be restored to an iOS device using iTunes, if desired.  Of course, if your hard drive crashes you'll lose it if it isn't backed up somewhere else.  If you want to included it in your computer backup, it will be located at one of the following locations:
    Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • Can time machine be used to back up one external drive to another external drive?

I use the photography program Lightroom to organize and develop digital photos.  All my photos are stored on my iMac internal drive.  The internal drive is almost full so I want to move my photos to a new external drive.  At present, I have an external drive devoted to backing up my iMac using time machine.  I have no need to change this arrangement.  I would like to use a new external drive to serve as the primary location for my pictures, which I will move from the internal drive.  Then I would like to backup that drive to a third external back up drive.  Can time machine be used to automatically back up the second drive to the third drive as well as for continuing to provide ongoing backups to my internal drive as it is currently doing?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
