Backing up to LACIE HD appending not replacing
my internal HD has a gradually growing folder called 500 GB with many folders in its folder as i am photo cataloguing. now at 27 GB.
episodically i transfer all of that to my ext LACIE 500 GB drive for insurance purposes & I also do the same with my smart disc 80 GB firelite.
Maybe im missing something here. In the process i trash the entire folder ( 500 GB ) from the 500GB LACIE and just drag the new evolving one from the internal HD folder to it
and it takes 10-12 minutes to copy. Is there a system whereby i can add J U S T the new files from the INTERNAL HD to these external HD's instead of everytime copying the entire folder. Am i missing software to do this?
This soon will turn into 90 GB copies... there must be something to help with this.
You need a software that can synchronize the two folders. There are several applications. One of them is SilverKeeper (http://www.silverkeeper.com) from LACIE (freeware). Another one is Synchronize! X Plus (http://www.qdea.com/pages/pages-syncx/syncx1.html) from Qdea (30$).

I often receive these insufficient USB power for devices messages a dozen times even when I do not have devices like camera, Ipad, Ipod, and Tascam digital audio recorder plugged in. Is there a way to troubleshoot these USB routers or should I consider that one of the routers may be defective and replace them?

Last weekend I went to the Apple store to replace my phone because the WiFi on my phone is nonfunctional. I need to back up to iCloud before I can replace my phone because I have information on there that needs to be saved. The worker at the Apple store said that, since I cannot connect to WiFi, I needed to plug my phone into my computer in order to back up. I went into iTunes and turned iCloud on, but my phone still will not back up to iCloud. So, I need to know exactly how to back up my iPhone to iCloud without WiFi?

My ipod touch broke then replaced it with a new one. I already dloaded iOS5 on the old one. When I connected my new unit it says it won't load the previous back because the new one is not up to date... Do I really have to download iOS5 again?
Yes, you have to update the iPod in order to retore from backup. The iOS on the "new" has to be aequal to r greater than on the iPod from which the backup was made. The iOS downloads are unique to an iDevice and model (the one for a 3G iPod will not work for a 4G iPod).

I backed up my phone before it was replaced. My apps have disappeared altogether, and my music is there but it indicates that I need to download (not pay for) each track again. It's only small stuff, but my ringtones and photos and background etc have all gone, too. What have I missed?

I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.

I dropped my iPhone 4s and the back cracked and it now will not turn on. I was wondering if anyone could give me an estimated price to fix it. And I do have insurance on it with best buy. I'm on Verizon's phone plan so I don't know if it would be cheaper to have it fixed with Best Buy or Verizon. That's only for the iPhone 5. On the 4 and 4S, they can repair the back glass in store for $30. They will not replace the display on a 4 or 4S. They must replace the entire phone. Replacing the display on them requires disassembling the entire phone, which they will not do in store.

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life. I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata. Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?
I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's. By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already. Go to the Floodgap website (they author it) download it for free. The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported. It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test. That's now my default on my G5's. Firefox and Safari are no longer supported. As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me. The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie. The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to. They 'dumbed it down' for the masses. Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion. So Leopard should be fine for you. It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine. As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site. As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps. See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM). You might find you don't need eight. A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will. I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC. Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro. The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it. You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available. As far as backup on your resurrected machine: look for a firewire enabled backup if can. Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup. Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes. You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all. The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00. It runs nice and fast through the 800 port. I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures. They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive. But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.

ThanksI have the same situation as you - sending out pdfs of designed pages and wanting to overwrite them continually. It used to happen on an older version of Mail, then it disappeared and now it's back with the latest version.
It's more than annoying, it's downright driving me nuts. In the last hour I had to quit Mail seven times.

Aperture 3.3.2: Import: Append and Replace button behind Metadata window
Hello,
when doing an import of some pictures in an already existing project, I saw that the Append and Replace button (for "Metadata" under "Metadata Presets") are almost completey hidden behind the Metadata input window. See:
It is impossible to see if Append or Replace is selected and I also cannot select Append or Replace.
Toggling the Metadata selection to "None" and back to "Keywords and Copyright" doesn't solve the problem.
Do others also have this problem?
Can I see if this problem has already been reported to Apple?

No, for me it is fine.
I'd recommend to quit Aperture, log off and on again, and remove the Aperture Preferences
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
from your User Library, as described in the
Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Faulty preference seetings may corrupt the layout of the User Interface.

"Keep Both Files" is NO Substitute for "Do Not Replace"
Can someone please post a Terminal command sequence to disable the "Keep Both Files" option in the Finder copy dialog? It's useless to me and I've already wasted several hours trying to manually work around this bug and shut it off on my own. Anyone with a digicam hobby will quickly run into the huge drawbacks of the loss of this feature.
I routinely deal with thousands of individual files on a daily basis; the file names repeat very frequently and the files arrive from multiple sources, therefore these files do NOT all have unique identifiers and each batch can be hundreds of GB. They all need to be moved and backed up weekly or more frequently. On a daily basis I move between 250-500GB of files between directories and from devices to the computer, et cetera. Without this function there is literally not enough time in the day to carefully manage a production system, which equates to a waste of time, electricity, and brain power on mundane tasks. Who keeps their entire file tree on paper so they can refer during copying between directories?
Windows 7's mostly useless "Keep Both Files" feature has no place in a system as useful as Apple's. It really doesn't help with anything other than to offer a rubber bumper to protect inattentive people from overwriting files, which was elegantly in place up until Lion. Come on, you can't GUI someone's inattention out of the equation. If you could, would I be typing this?....
Listen, by removing the "Do Not Replace" option from the finder copy dialog, I am forced to either increase storage space--I can't believe I need to explain this, but I will say "unnecessarily" just to be redundant--or alternatively I must copy EVERY FILE???!!!! So, if only 50 files out of 1,800 need to be copied I still have to move all 1800 or sort through them one by one.
You have got to be joking. Give me a Terminal rip to kill this behavior please. This is an amazingly full-fleshed waste of time. It seems obvious enough that this is a programming SNAFU. "Do Not Replace" has been removed from the Finder copy dialogue because Lion actually cannot do both that and "Keep Both Files."
So, who knows the code for Terminal to revert this behavior to the pre-Lion days? Post that sucka!!!! A lot of people are looking for it.

A-and, the Terminal command is in bold if you already know how to do this. Otherwise, here's a primer for command-line interfacing. If you want to learn more about the cp command, type [ man cp ].
1. Open the Terminal application (in Utilities).
2. Type this code, which is a basic command for recursive copying ("do not replace" for us non-tech linguists):
cp -Rpn /originating file path/ /destination file path/
3. Hit return. If you're moving a large amount of data, say a few gigs or more, at this point the cursor will disappear and the file transfer will take place. The cursor reappears when the operation is done. You can do other things like normal on your computer at this point, but don't move or alter any of the files during the transfer (just like normal). While that cursor is gone there's a transfer going on. If you're curious if it's working (or distrustful like me), you can open a finder window at the destination to watch the files show up.
If you're wondering if you have to do all that typing, the answer is no. Type in the [ cp -Rpn ] exactly like that and then drag and drop folder 1 into the Terminal window. It'll give you a file path automatically. Then you only need to put a slash after it and then drop the folder you want to copy into onto the the Terminal window. You might have to type another slash. Hit enter.

OLE: Why placeholders of MS Word document are not replaced?
Hi Experts, I am using OLE to create Word Documents within a LOOP. The problem I have is that the Word Documents are created and seved well but the placeholders (&nom_prov') and (&ncod_prov') are not replaces by the values (in the example: test1 and test2).
