Backing up to Maxtor Shared Storage II

trying to backup files from mb pro to maxtor shared storage II.  noticed not all .jpg's copied over and no other information (e.g., .doc's, etc.). any help appreciated including if easy way to ensure all documents (.jpg's, .doc, etc.) copied over.

The best way is with http://www.bombich.com/ 's Carbon Copy Cloner using simple cloning after formatting the hard drive with GUID partitioning.  If you must connect to a PC, consider networking via the PC, or using Macdrive software to read it.

  • Suggestions on how to connect iMac *directly* to Maxtor Shared Storage?

i know that using Time Machine to back up to my Maxtor Shared Storage over my network isn't an option right now... So in the meantime, I would like to just connect my Maxtor drive directly to my iMac -- but I can't figure out how.
There is no way to connect it via USB, and there is no firewire port. The Apple guy at Best Buy said to use the ethernet cable to connect the external hard drive to my iMac, but I can't get my iMac to recognize the drive that way.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Right now my Maxtor drive is connected via a router no problem... But In order to use Time Machine, the drive needs to be directly (via cable, etc) connected to my iMac...
There is no firewire port on my Maxtor drive.
I did go to Best Buy (and Office Max, and Office Depot) to buy a USB cable... The cable I need doesn't exist... For example they are like this:
    http://www.coolgear.com/images/as340823as.jpg
But BOTH my iMac and Maxtor drive have ports that take the USB cable-end shown on the left in the image above. There is no cable that is the same on both ends...
So, how do I get my computer to recognize/mount my Maxtor drive when I connect it directly to the iMac via ethernet cable (that is what the Apple guy at Best Buy told me to do)? I can't find anything at all in the Maxtor documentation about this...
    Thanks for reading...

  • Maxtor Shared Storage (NAS) + Airport Express problems

Dear forum readers and network pundits,
I have just recently bought a 500Gb Maxtor Shared Storage (MSS) ethernet drive, to which I'm planning to make regular backup of files from my wirelessly connected MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. Both computers are connected to the Internet via Airport Express, which, in turn, is connected to a router/modem. The MSS is attached to an RJ45 socket on the modem, next to the Airport Express RJ45 cable.
The problem is that I cannot seem to make a proper connection to the MSS. I can access the drive's web interface through Safari, but I cannot mount it as a network drive in the Finder. When hooking up my MacBook Pro to the router/modem directly using a RJ45 cable everything works like a charm, so I know the drive works fine. The problem seems to be the transition from the wired router to Airport Express.
I'm no network wizard in any way. When things don't work from the start I'm left scratching my beard, which is why I turn to the vast bank of knowledge contained here. Please help me. Is there a button in the Airport Express settings I can push to make it work, or do I need to by more hardware?
    Looking forward to your help.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • NAS Problems! Maxtor Shared Storage II not accepting long file names

Somebody help me!!!! Maxtor Shared Storage II. can't accept beyond certain filename length. And Maxtor says its Mac compatible. What a bull! Now, is there a way for me to do it via ethernet? Or do I have to use a usb cable with matching ends? And once I've reformat it, will everything works just as fine as well? I mean all the capability of the RAID and network?
    Cheers!

Thanks for the technical jargon thingy – the hatter – I've been spending the couple of my sleepless hours finding out about the problem that I have came across that FAT32 thingy numerous times.
Next month I'll be turning 32. Lucky for me, I'm not FAT and make sure I won't otherwise I start becoming 'Mac-unfriendly' even though I'm definitely am very compatible.

  • File Copied to Maxtor Shared Storage NAS Drive Disappearing?

I attached a new Maxtor Shared Storage II (500 Gb) drive to our wireless router, and have discovered problem with disappearing files when trying to copy a local file to a folder in the NAS drive.
Open a window to an empty folder on the NAS drive. Drag a file on the desktop of the local machine to the folder. File appears to be successfully copied.
However, looking at the info bar of the target window immediately after the copying operation shows that the folder contains TWO files (even though only one is shown in the window). After a few seconds, the file disappears and the window shows 0 files. There is no error message.
The desktop file I'm trying to copy has an image icon (as with many files in Leopard). However, the file in the NAS folder window always shows a generic Preview icon during its brief existence.
This happens about 75% of the time.
Occasionally, the window does show two files after copying, and both files will disappear. When this happens, one of the files has a generic Preview icon, and the other has an Acrobat icon.
Other times, the drag and drop produces no files on the target window and no error message.
The file that shows the problems is this file: http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Promotionsfiles/businesslinkgovukrun.pdf
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1, everything up to date. Can anyone shed light on this problem?
What seems to me to be happening is that when Leopard copies a file with an image icon, it copies the icon separately from the file. After the copy, it ties them up together. If something is not quite right, it can't "bundle" the icon with the file, and the copy operation falls down.

This seems to me related to this problem

  • Should I buy Maxtor Shared Storage Plus - 300GB ??

Would greatly appreciate your advice. I know nothing about network storage. Have just stumbled across it when looking for an external HD 250-300 GB. From the Discussion, it sounds tricky but Maxtor's publicity says it is Mac-friendly. MacMall has them now available.
Is it really good and Mac-friendly???
My iMac has lots of HD capacity but the iCube 20 GB HD is packed. I would like to network them and have my assistant work simultaneously with me on the iCube.
I have a 2Wire DSL router from SBC connected by Ethernet cable to the iCube and by wi-fi to the iMac. Will the Maxtor storage be connected by Ethernet to the router?
First, the network storage would be my backup. Can I boot from it too?
I understand both users can share documents. This will allow me to off-load lots of stuff from the iCube. Can both users work simultaneously on a Word or Excel document?
Can both users share the same e-mail database (Entourage or Mail) simultanelously??
Is it really better for me than an external HD? I guess, depends on the capability to work simultaneously.
    Thanks for your comments,
iMac G5 250 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iCube iBook

Maxtor's publicity says it is Mac-friendly
I don't see anything on their site that mentions the word 'Mac', friendly or not.
That doesn't mean you can't use it - it may well be that it only implemented Windows-based file sharing protocols (e.g. SMB), but the Mac can act as an SMB client just fine, so it may not need specific Mac support.
Will the Maxtor storage be connected by Ethernet to the router?
That depends on your router and whether the router has a built-in switch or not.
Look at the back of the router and count the number of ports it has. If it's more than 2 (and at least one of them is spare) then it has a built-in switch and you should be able to plug the server into it.
If it doesn't have more than two port, or all its ports are used then you'll need an addition switch to hook everything together.
Can both users work simultaneously on a Word or Excel document?
No. Both users can open the document, but neither Word nor Excel support multiple editors/writers. The second user who opens the file will get an error and will not be able to save the document while the first user has it open.
Additionally, don't think that one user can open the file and type while the other user sees what's being written? It doesn't work that way, either (there are apps that will do this, but neither Excel nor Word do).
Can both users share the same e-mail database (Entourage or Mail) simultanelously??
Sure, if you don't mind corrupting your mail database and losing any and all mail in it (seriously: Do not try this).
I'm not aware of any mail client that supports multiple accesses to the mail database. You might be able to achieve what you want using IMAP (where the mail is stored on a mail server and can be accessed serially by multiple clients), but I don't know your goals here to know if that is sufficient.
Is it really better for me than an external HD? I guess, depends on the capability to work simultaneously.
It depends on what you want to do. If your goal is to have the second machine share some of the storage on the first it may be that your best bet is to just fire up file sharing on one machine and do it that way.
Just bear in mind that few applications support multiple accesses to the same file so no matter what approach you take you will have that limitation.

  • Problem of using OCFS2 as shared storage to install RAC 10g on VMware

    Hi, all
I am installing a RAC 10g cluster with two linux nodes on VMware. I created a shared 5G disk for the two nodes as shared storage partition. By using OCFS2 tools, i formatted this shared storage partition and successfully auto mounted it on both nodes.
Before installing, i use the command "runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n node1,node2" to determine the installation prerequisites. Everything is ok except an error "Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.". By searching the web, i found this error could be safely ignored.
The OCFS2 works well on both nodes, i formatted the shared partition as ocfs2 file system and configure o2bc to auto start ocfs service. I mounted the shared disk on both nodes at /ocfs directory. By adding an entry into both nodes' /etc/fstab, this partition can be auto mounted at system boots. I could access files in shared partition on both nodes.
My problem is that, when installing clusterware, at the stage "Specify Oracle Cluster Registry", I enter "/ocfs/OCRFILE" for Specify OCR Location and "/ocfs/OCRFILE_Mirror" for Specify OCR Mirror Location. But got an error as following:
    ----- Error Message ----
The location /ocfs/OCRFILE, entered for the Oracle Cluster Registry(OCR) is not shared across all the nodes in the cluster. Specify a shared raw partition or cluster file system that is visible by the same name on all nodes of the cluster.
    ------ Error Message ---
I don't know why the OUI can't recognize /ocfs as shared partition. On both nodes, using command "mounted.ocfs2 -f", i can get the result:
    Device FS Nodes
    /dev/sdb1 ocfs2 node1, node2
What's the possible wrong? Any help is appreciated!
    Addition information:

    Hello
I am not sure how far this following solution is relevant to your problem (regardless when it was originally posted - may help someone who is reading this thread), here is what I faced and here is how I fixed it:
I was setting up RAC using VMWare. I prepared rac1 [installed OS, configured disks, users, etc] and the made a copy of it as rac2. So far so good. When, as per the guide I was following for RAC configuration, I started OCFS2 configuration, faced the following error on RAC2 when I tried to mount the /dev/adb1:
    ===================================================
    [Root @ *rac2* ~] # mount - t ocfs2 - o datavolume, nointr / dev / sdb1 / ocfs
ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid
mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted" mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted"
    ===================================================
After a lot of "googling around", I finally bumped into a page, the kind person who posted the solution said [in my words below and more detailed ]:
    o shutdown both rac1 and rac2
o in VMWare, "edit virtual machine settings" for rac1
o remove the disk [make sure you drop the correct one]
o recreate it and select *"allocate all disk space now"* [with same name and in the same directory where it was before]
o start rac1 and login as *"root"* and *"fdisk /dev/sdb"* [or whichever is/was your disk where you r installing ocfs2]
Once done, repeat the steps for configuring OCFS2. I was successfully able to mount the disk on both machines.
All this problem was apparently caused by not choosing "allocate all disk space now" option while creating the disk to be used for OCFS2.
If you still have any questions or problem, email me at [email protected] and I'll try to get back to you at my earliest.
    Good luck!

  • WRT610N Shared Storage

I recently purchased a WRT610N and have been having some problems setting up the USB shared storage feature.  I have a 1.5 Terabyte Seagate drive that I have created two partiions on (I had read elsewhere in the forums that the WRT610N only handled partitions/dirves up to 1 TB).  Both partitions are NTFS with the first one being 976,561 GB and the second one being 420,700 GB. Both drives show up in the "Disk" section of the admin console and I can create/define a share for the larger of the two partitions without any problems.
The first of my problems comes when I try to create/define a share for the smaller partition.  I can create a share but the admin console does not save the access privleges that I assign to it.  Despite setting them up in the admin console they don't show up when I go back and look (in both the detail and summary views) the Access rights show as blank.  I do not have this issue with the larger partition where I can add and later view groups in the Access section.
The second problem comes when I try to attach to the larger share from a network client.  I can look at the shares if I use ..........Start - Run - and Type \\192.168.1.1.  If I enter in my admin User ID and password, I can see the new share on the WRT610N.  When I try to double click on it, I am then pompted again for a Username & Password,  When I try to re-enter the admin user ID and password, the logon comes right back to me with "WRT610n\admin" populated in the User ID field.  From there it won't accept the admin password.  There are no error messages.
Help with either problem would be appreciated.

When you select your Storage partition and open it, and if it ask you for the Username and Password, thats the username and password is of your storage drive, Might be you must have set some password for your storage drivers.
Login to your Routers GUI. and click on the Storage Tab and Below you will find the Sub tab "Administration" click on it, if you wish you can Modify the "admin" rights, Like change the password or else you can Create your Own User and password. So whenever you login to your Storage Partition, and it ask for the username and password then you can input that username and password and click OK. This way you will be able to access your Storage Driver.

  • Shared Storage to handle multiple seats for UHD-4k,8k and larger res-am I dreaming?

    Is this possible?
In our shop we work in very large canvases in AE and PPro for Live Event Production. Lots of compositing in 4k up to and sometimes beyond 8k. AE for the heavy compositing with mediocre RAM previews. PPro for PreViz playback with realtime performance a must in HD and most times in 4k.
We have been working thru setting up appropriate workstations to handle the performance and are making progress. We have historically been on all Macs but branching out to PC for the better performance capabilities. And testing render farms for big renders.
Storage is the next project. We have 10-15 AE artists and 5-8 PPro editors that would benefit form a shared storage solution. Is this possible with current storage technoloigy? Or would it be more efficient to look into local storage like SAS...or?
    Would appreciate any input.
Oh...and this Adobe Anywhere sounds very interesting in our workflow....any opinions? Again....not talking about hd or lower res....4k and above.
    Thanks,

All that I know is from past discussions (see below) which indicate that you may not edit over a network connection (except Anywhere, which is a different product) so you will be limited to using any kind of shared storage only for "master" files that are copied to local drives for editing and then back when the edit is done
But, since I don't do that kind of editing anyway, all I have are some saved links... and there may be newer products that will work for shared editing, not just store files
Any version of Premiere doesn't work properly, if at all, over a network... so if it works at all, expect inconsistent behavior and problems

  • Shared Storage ?!

    Hi all,
We will have a SOA environment in a cluster with two machines in active-active configuration.
Must I have a Shared Storage for this configuration ? I undestood that it is needed when I have Active-Passive configuration but I think I migth be wrong.
Could you gurus, clarify me about shared storage ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Luiz Philip

    Luiz,
You might have got the answers till now but in case you haven't then -
So for these weblogic's features there's no other way to accomplish it without using a shared storage ?yes, shared storage is required for these features.
Getting back with redundant binary installation, having just one single binary installation to create multiple SOA servers wouldn't lead me to addtional network traffic ? When these SOA Servers are created, will they have runtime files local too? Or Will they always use the files at shared storage while running ?Not really. All the servers will deploy the applications during start-up and at runtime those deployments will be used for processing. So it is one time class loading and after that loaded classes are used for processing.

  • WRT600N - Network Sharing / Storage Issues

I recently bought a WRT600N v1.0 from Dell.com and configured the router (I'm a CCNP, so I've been using routers, etc.. for years). I had a WRT54GS v1.0 before this and that worked great for years.
The WiFi (both 5GHz and 2.4GHz) has been rock solid on the WRT600N, but my issue is with the network sharing/storage (NAS) part of the router.
I plugged in a Seagate USB 2.0 750GB HDD (already formatted to NTFS using Windows Vista). I was able to create folders and share them out. However, I cannot map a drive to about half of the folders. All folders are set up the exact same way, and even those I can map a drive to.. the network performance copying files to those shares is horrible (even over Gigabit Ethernet). I'm talking like 1MB/s, when I was getting 20MB/s using my old solution.
When I formatted the disk using the WRT600N, it only allowed me to format it to FAT, not even FAT32 or NTFS. Then it would still only work half the time.
    Any ideas?
This seems like a FW issue, like many brand new Linksys products. I've already contacted Linksys support and they don't have a beta FW available to resolve this either.

    DTSkyCop wrote:
Have you fixed your issues with the storage feature of this router...?  I recently bought the WRT600N router and the SAME exact Seagate HD for the storage link feature.  I have spent over 15 hours numerous phone calls to Linksys Techs and My Computer Works Techs and NOTHING doing, it still does not work right.
I have set up my drive and I to had to FORMAT using the FAT system of the router per one of the Linksys Supervisor Techs.  I did this and set up everything related to my drive and MAPPED all my drives...  I have access to all the drives at first and can move files around and delete from the network.
I wait for a few minutes and open a NEW program and try to SAVE to the network drive location and  get "You Need Permission to Preform This Action.  Try Again or Cancel" are the only options I get and NO REQUEST for a paswsword is given.  I am administrator and cannot now access my drive / network...
The TECH's for MCW are puzzled as well as they initially set the drive and Share folders up.  They cannot figure out why there continues to be a problem accessing the folders on the drive.
I spent 2 1/2 hours tonight on the phone with LinkSys and got really no healp only try this and try that.  While experiencing the problems with the tech on the phone, I preformed a REFRESH on the Storage / Disk page and ALL Share Files I created Disappeared.  I looked physically at my router and discovered the USB was now out...Why?  The TECH thought is was a loose connection.  NEW Router and NEW HD.  Both are in a secure location and no one around to touch them.  I could not get the router to discover the HD plugged into the USB location so I finally unplugged it and plugged it back in.
All setting remained and the router came back up without what seemed to be any hitches.  At this point, I played with the configuration settings while on what seemed like eternal hold and FINALLY got access to the NETWORK drives and was able to save to all the partitions that were created.
The Tech decided that all was OK and we disconnected and guess what...  I again tried to SAVE to the a partition and "You Need Permission to Preform This Action.  Try Again or Cancel" came up again.
I am TRULY frustrated with this NEW SETUP and don't know what to do now.  Can anyone help me fix this thing to make it work right?????
One thing you will learn about LinkSys, is that they have the best prodcuts out there..but if you buy a first generation product (such as the WRT600N), it will have issues that will take firmware updates to resolve the problems. The best thing is to report the issues and wait a few months until several firmware updates come out to resolve the problems.
I recently installed the latest FW update and my WRT600N has been acting "better", but still needs a few more FW updates to fix the other stability issues. I'm fully prepared to wait it out, but it is unfortunate that we have to wait anything out...as LinkSys Q/A should have caught these bugs prior to product release and had them fixed then.
I've tried products from NetGear, Belkin, etc.. and all of them are horrible. At least LinkSys products work once the FW updates come out. I just hope you never need to contact LinkSys support as they are horrible.
    Here's my configuration:
    - WRT600N v1.0
    - Latest FW
    - Seagate 750GB USB 2.0 External HDD formatted to NTFS using Windows Vista
    - Shared folders created using WRT600N
    - Media Server Enabled (still does not work with my Playstation 3)
    - File write performance, still horrible..even over Gigabit Ethernet (around 200KB/s, should be around 4-5MB/s at least)
    - File share mapping, still intermittent.. usually works.. but I noticed it seems to be case senstitive in mapping the drive names (odd)
    - Should have an option to format the HDD as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS (only FAT is used currently)

I just ran into this myself while building an enterprise system on Win Server 2003. The answers here did not sit well with me and I needed to be sure of the shared storage prior to proceeding further. Researching Metalink did not uncover any relevant information either. I then opened an SR with Oracle and I did get back a satisfactory response which allowed me to verify my shared storage. The entire text of their solution can be found at http://www.webofwood.com/rac/oracle-response-to-shared-storage-check-failed-on-nodes/. Basically, it is a method of using another utility to identify the storage device names used by Windows and then writing and reading to them from each node to verify each node 'sees' what is written by the other node(s). If this check is successful, you can then proceed.
