Backing up VHS video data 8600 RCA ports

Hi all
has anyone been successful on transferring their lovely VHS home video collection via the 8600 RCA ports on back? I'm in the process of trying this but wanted feedback before attempting this. I heard it's a very long and tedious process.
Thanks

You posted a similar topic in August 2008. What results did you have, from the advice given then? You should seriously consider using a computer with a faster processor/system bus/memory for this project, to reduce the time required for analog-digital conversion. Sony makes a standalone DVD burner (DVDirect), to which a VCR or camcorder can be connected. You wouldn't have the editing options provided by computer software, but if you don't mind WYSIWYG videos, you might want to look into it.

  • VHS tape video backup via RCA ports with 8600 Mac

    Hi all,
Sorry if this is a repeated question but a few years ago my VCR died. I'd like to back up my old VHS videos. My question is, will buying a VCR with S-video ports give me better image quality than RCA ports? Due to the speed on the 8600, will this give me good quality?
Are there other options that will not be costly?
    thanks for your help.

So this device connects via USB onto my G4 and connect the VCR to it correct?
From my reading of it, yes. But your G4 will need USB2 (after-market PCI card), not the built-in USB 1.1 ports. There's probably similar devices that work with Firewire which your computer already has, and usually Firewire is the standard for this kind of thing, but you'd have to shop around.
Does your OS on the G4 support that device?
When I did this on my G3 using the "wings" card I was restricted to a very small frame size for capture. Read the detailed specs. on that device and what it will allow.
Do you have a large, fast drive on your G4? I don't know if that device does on the fly encoding, but if it doesn't and you have to store raw files they can take up a huge amount of room (several tens of GB I seem to recall when I did this on my G3 beige).
Back up a bit. How many tapes do you have to do? Are they truly worth it? If it's movies that you can get cheap DVD equivalents in the $8 bin at a discount store then it's questionable if it's worth your time. As observed, you're not going to get great quality off tape. If you only have a few family tapes consider getting them done at a place that does this commercially. A friend just had a family video done at a place nearby and it it didn't cost too much. I didn't ask how much but it was very affordable and not as much as it would have cost me to get a similar setup going on my G4. Yes, if you're doing 20 years of home videos then it might be cheaper.
Final storage media? If you're burning to DVD then make sure you get good quality (Taiyo Yuden if possible) and make duplicates.

  • S-Video to Digital TVA RCA ports

I have a V5000 3 yr old Compaq Presario notebook and I am trying to connect a 4 pin S video cable (with an audio line) from the notebook s-video jack to the RCA ports on a sony digital TV.  The sound comes through, but no picture.  When I hit function F4 there is a flicker, but no picture on  the TV.
I also tried the dual monitor in Display to no avail.
Any ideas?  Anything that needs to be changed in the setup?

I have an older Analog-to-Digital/Digital-to-Analog converter box I bought many years ago to do just what you describe under Windows.  It has RCA and S-video in as well as firewire in, then it also has the same on the output side.  This allows me to take an alaog video signal in through this boix and send it to my computer to capture using my sodftware of choice.  WHen I first bought the box, I was using a Dell laptop & Vegas Video (version 4 to date it).  Now I am using my MacBook Pro and iMovie (it came free with the OS X 10.7 license).
The devie I bought was from Pinnacle, and I believe they are still in business, but I don't seem to see the firewire devices any more.  They do still have plenty of USB ones, but you will relly want the Firewire if you can get it...

From the iPod's Main Menu choose Videos -> Settings and make sure TV Out is set to Off.
Otherwise, try a hard reset as well.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Transferring VHS Video onto DVD via Macbook

    Hi
I've been given a large project and need some (simple) help.
Its to transfer about 40 VHS tapes onto CD,s.
Help please as How/what do I need/ is there any step by step instructions?
    Thanks

    Hi Nigel
First, please be clear about exactly what you need to do. You need to transfer video from VHS, but if you need to burn video to a playable disk, you need to create DVDs, not CDs (which are for audio or data only). If you're unsure about this, check with the person who gave you the project.
Next, you need a VHS video player with video outputs. It's most likely that you'll have RCA-style "composite" video, which is a yellow connector, along with red and white connectors for the audio. You may also have an S-video connector, which is a round multi-pin socket. If it's a newer VCR, you might even have component video, which is a series of three red, blue and green sockets.
The third part of the equation is getting that video into your computer. With a MacBook, you don't have any kind of video-in socket, and even if you had a Mac Pro desktop, you would still need to purchase a video capture card to get the video in.
However, Macs (except for the very newest MacBooks) all have Firewire ports, which is an industry-accepted way to import video. If you have a video generating device plugged into your Firewire port, you will be able very easily to pull it into iMovie, or Final Cut (Express or Studio). So if you can borrow/rent a device to convert the video to a Firewire signal, that's the best solution. You can use a digital camcorder that has composite video in and Firewire out (usually the most readily available solution), and any professional "video deck" will also do this for you. There are conversion boxes available, but they are quite an investment if you have to buy them.

  • Converting VHS videos to DVDs

How do I use my Mac to convert old VHS video tapes to DVDs? Do I need to buy a converter of some kind? What is the process? I'd appreciate any light shone on this topic since I'm trying to preserve some family and travel videos by converting them and hopefully editing them in the process!
    Thanks!

    Hi
Yes You need something that converts from analog to digiatl.
    • A/D-box like Canopus ADVC-55, 110 or 300
    • miniDV Camera with video trough function
    • miniDV Camera without - You need to copy one hour at a time to tape
(Don't use LP-function 90-min on a 60min tape - audio Will go out of Sync)
Many miniDV Cameras Don't have analog-in - in EU omitted due to tax regulations
extra cost to turn it on.
    I do
    • Have a Canopus ADVC-300
This because old VHS tapes often get's drop outs and the ADVC-300 makes it's own timecode
this makes it possibly to import in long sequences without the need of baby-sit.
You also need a SCART-plug WITH AN IN AND OUT Switch plus a RCA-Cable with three
connectors in each end. This to connect A/D-box with VHS-VCR and a 4-pin to 6-pin
FW-Cable for Canopus ADVC-300 to Mac (Others may use 6-pin to 6-pin or even
    FW-800 to 6-pin)
There is no way possibly I know about if You got a Mac without a FW-port 800 or 400.
    eg New Mac-Books. Sorry.

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • Why does itunes say that my iphone has 9GB of video data even though I've deleted every video I've ever made

    Hello,
When I use itunes on my macbook to view the contents of my iphone 5, the bar at the bottom of the window that shows me how much data is taken up for different categories says that I have 9 GB of video data. The thing is, I deleted all of the videos that I've ever recorded on my phone, but itunes still says I have 9.15 GB of video data! I ejected my iphone and plugged it back in multiple times to see if it was a problem with refreshing, but that didn't work. Itunes also says that I only have about 3 GB of free space left and when I go to the settings on my iphone, it says the same thing, so I know that there really are mysterious files on my iphone taking up 9 GB of space. Also, both itunes and my iphone says that I have 83 video files. I've deleted as much apps as I could, just incase there were apps that had video files included in them, but that didnt really work. I also opened the video app in utilitties on my iphone and it said that I do not have ANY videos. I don't really know what else to do.
Is there any way to just see all of the files on my iphone? Itunes does not let me do that. It only lets me view certain files from apps like adobe reader. I need to find out what video files itunes is detecting on my iphone. Again, I've deleted all of the videos that I made on the phone by using the photos app. I never downloaded video files from safari either.
    Thanks in advance

since moving to the mac from windows, this seems to happen less. I also found that having some videos marked as "remember playback position" resulted in a lot of updates to the ipod when i had watched them through itunes.

  • Could someone please tell me the fastest, cheapest, simplest way to back up all my data (photos and music) thanks!

Well I am heading in to the
apple services store to collect my computer which went dead in my power cut 10 days ago (discussed in my last post), and has since been fixed with new power supply.  My question is - what's the cheapest and easiest way for me to back-up all my data (several thousand photos, and similar number of songs on iTunes, and a few quicktime video files)  Is there a product I can buy to save it on - I have no idea how many gigs etc, that will be? and what I need to buy to do so, and finally, how easy/fast will it be to save everything.... this is indeed a very simple thing, I am sure, but I have never done it before, just saved odd bits on pen drives, etc.....  The repair is costing over $400 - and as it's an old imac, aside from the fact it has all of Final Cut Pro Studio on it - it's hardly worth the repair price.... what I want though is to save everything as cheaply and simply as possible - what do I need to buy and how (in simple language please) do I save it... Many many thanks if anyone can put this in simple language for me... Cheers

I agree with BGreg about OWC, great people and service, quality products and competitive prices. Not bigbox sell cheap stuff prices but fair prices. Like him I also like cloning with SuperDuper! or CCC. For most users CCC is perfect - SuperDuper! adds some extras that techs like.
But I'll also add a vote for Apple's own TimeMachine. It is an automatic backup system that runs every hour; the first backup takes a while and the rest not very long because they are backing up only the chances made in the last hour. Due to its schema, TimeMachine is most effective with a backup drive that is 2-3 times larger than your backup set. If you are using 200GB of your 500GB drive, then your TimeMachine backup drive should be at least 400GB and preferably closer to 600GB.
The two backup schemes are different and having two different backups is a very good idea - backup drives have been known to die . The clone's advantage is that it is a bootable system disk - if your computer's drive dies you can boot with it and keep working until you get the computer repaired. If your computer's drive gets messed up you can boot with the clone and try to repair it or at least recover some of the most recent files that aren't on the clone. (Which happens to be one of the disadvantages of a clone - people tend to reclone somewhat infrequently.) Having TimeMachine means you have very recent backups.
So if you intend to keep using this computer - TimeMachine might be the better choice - or at least another consideration. If you are just grabbing data - CCC will do the trick best.

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • Backed-up purchased videos unrecognized on iTunes

I had my Toshiba 80G hard drive start to die on me last week, so I burned everything of importance on DVD's before sending my Powerbook G4 into the shop. When I went to re-import all the music, podcasts, and videos that I'd downloaded and purchased, the videos didn't appear.
I even tried created a folder called 'videos' in my itunes folder, but it doesn't show up. The m4v files are there, but iTunes won't recognize them, import them, or play them when I double-click on them. I paid good money for these music videos, and I took the time to back them up. Why can't I play them?
    PowerBook G4 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm sure it's tacky to reply to your own post of your own question, but since I resolved the issue by myself (and by accident), I thought it might be worthwhile to put the solution down in words in case anyone else actually ends up with the same problem.
The problem was solved by one or both of the following things I did:
I downloaded iTunes 7, and I downloaded the latest Quicktime (which apparently is still not good enough to look at the mac commercials on their web site <grr>). One or both of these things allowed my computer to recognize and import the videos I'd previously purchased on iTunes and backed up on a data DVD.
So if this happens to you, try what I did. It might work for you too.

  • Lossless storage & editing of video data.

A while back, there was a discussion about iMovie and how it used/preserved data, the statement made at the time was:
iMovie 08 (and 09) uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
So, as someone who's life has been too busy to maintain a vigilant watch on the developments of the various flavors of iMovie that have come and gone so I apologize for asking what might have been discussed at length in other threads but I was hoping for pointers to summaries about this.
Has the  integrity of the video data been fixed or has an alternative to iMovie arisen as a better choice of video editing software?
Currently using "Snow Leopard" and unable/unwilling to change version of OS.
    Opinions?

Has this been fixed - NO not at all !
Thank you very much for confirming this for me!
iMovie HD6 - still works (for those lucky one to own it - as I )
Mee too! I'm very happy to have it here on my machine. It makes SUCH a difference.
Because of my previous problems (search on my name) I'm redoing all of my videos.
FinalCut Express and Pro - can deliver 100% interlaced SD-Video to iDVD (or alike) making the DVD as good as it can be.
Well, with the demise of Express, (unless I don't know where the download link is) I'm out of luck with that one. The pro, is awfully pricey for the home user. I am still poking around to see what my choices are. Y'know, I'd purchase iMovie for real money (<$150) if I could rely on it to be supported properly (i.e., not just dropped on a whim ala iDVD) but US$300 is awfully steep for half of the iMovie/iDVD solution.
I started to revist software because I'm having an issue where installing a transition in a movie caused a chunk of unknown audio to be stuck in too. I'm going over my source material now.
Thank you very much for your time and info.
If you ever find an editing suite to replace the pair, please post it for all of us to know about!
