Backing up when importing images

Hi
New around here and to Bridge, so please be gentle!
I have discovered that I can make a backup of my images in a second location at the same time as importing them from my camera into Bridge. This is really useful, but it doesn't seem to do a very neat job. Am I missing something?
Firstly, I can choose to make a second copy (backup) of my images in a separate location, but I cannot rename the files at the same time as I can with the original import so I end up with one set of files with a new (batch) name in location 1, and the backup set in location 2 still with the camera file names. Is it possible to get Bridge to make the backup with my chosen new batch name?
Secondly, Once I have keyworded my images (which I batch-renamed on import) I want to back these up on my second location, but of course they won't overwrite the backup made at the time of import because those have retained the camera file names...
Can anyone help this confused bunny?

Welcome to the Forum!
I have not used the backup feature of Bridge download, so this is only conjecture.  But I believe it is like any backup, it takes a snapshot in time.  You now have a seperate file.   I believe the intent was you now have an original file of what the camera shot, but is not meant to reflect what is in Bridge.
Just like any backup if you want to keep it up to date with your current working file you will have to do repeated backups every so often, and this is very advisable.  You can use Windows backup or buy a 3 party backup program.  I use Acronis True Image Home.

When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?
This is happening even with photos that were taken on another camera, not just mine.  My daughter told me that the laptop recently fell.  The yellow streak is not anywhere else on the laptop, just on the photos in LR.

I have had this problem on my desktop.  I have been attempting to reproduce it where it can be debugged. Here are some observations/facts in my environment--no conclusions:
    1. I do not import from camera or memory stick directly into LR.  I copy all images (using Explorer) from camera to two different locations (backup location first); and then my working area. In both cases, after files are copied I mark them Read-only.
    2. Poor observation, but in any event: the issue has only occurred when I do a large number of images. Its a poor observation as I have no exact number.  I suspect when I do less than 50 always works well every time.  However, I have also done some very large imports without issue.
    3. Error only occurs with my RAW images--for me that's NEF.  I have multiple cameras--those that only capture jpg images have never had an issue in LR.
    4. Even if the file is marked Read Only issues can still occur.  I then remove the image from the disk using LR -- and then manually (Explorer) copy in my backup image -- re import again and all is well.  I think one time I exited LR and replaced the bad file with a backup and restarted LR and all was well again.
    5. When it occurs I have performed a HASH value on the broken file and on the backed up file to determine if the file contents has changed--and each time the file contents has changed.
    6. I have had this occur immediately after import, but most often it occurs like this... import large number of images; Make changes in Development Module on random image, export jpg of changes--exit LR. Open up LR and file is corrupted.
    7. I have had this issue on multiple USB drives ( okay just 2 different drives have been tested ).
What next--fire up Process Monitor and monitor the system (specifically LR) to see if it reports any file open for write access when this occurs.  So, far I have not had process monitor actually running when it occurs--one of these days.

I got the same problem. I tried to import into Flash cs3, cs4, cs5 - constant error in each application.
But seems I've found the reason why this happened in my case.
I just deleted the installed system video codecs (divx, xvid, third-party codecs).
I do not see a direct connection with the import objects into flash. But fact, immediately after the removal of codecs it has to work.
I suspect that the reason could be a third-party codec that is associated with playing QuickTime. Maybe.
Also if it does not help you this way, I used a temporary solution.
Open the psd in Adobe Ilustrator, copy images to clipboard, paste it into flash.
In my case the images are not displayed on the screen after insert, but put into the library.
Don't touch objects, just save the file, close the Flash.
Launch Flash and open saved file. In my case in the first run was an error.
Close the application and open it with file again.
The second time the error was not followed, the images were within the document 8-)
This option made it possible to work until the issue is not solved completely (adobe, wake up!).
    win7 64, cs5 (cs3, cs4 had the same issue)
Perhaps it can be useful for someone.
    thx
    Sorry for my English.

  • LR4.4 - blacked out boxes when importing images from upgraded PSE10 catalogue [was: Lightroom 4]

I have been using photoshop elements 10 for over a year and decided it was time to upgrade to Lightroom for my photo workflow as I am doing more paid photography work.  I purchased and received my boxed full version of Lightroom 4 from B & H photovideo on Friday.  I installed it then went on-line and updated it with the download of lightroom 4.4.  Then I opened lightroom 4.4 for the first time and went to files and selected upgrade my photoshope elemnts catalog to lightroom.  Once that was completed I then tried to import images to lightroom 4 to work with them and all I get are blacked out or greyed out boxes in my slide strip at the bottom of the desktop window in import mode. When I point to each box it shows a file name but will not show the image.  I have spent all kinds of time reading and watching tutorials on opening images, importing images and catalogs  and I am FRUSTRATED....  Would really like to talk to someone to get this figured out.  I never thought it would be this difficult to use this program... HELP Please...

I would like to THANK YOU for your assistance in my situation.  I followed your suggestion and went into my monitor settings and did a manual reset to the default profile and went back to Lr and the images started popping up one at a time until all 7000+ were visable.  Just for the record, I am using Canon 1Ds Mark II, on a Quadcor AMD unlocked FX processor running Windows 7. I shoot in RAW and convert to JPG.  It would have been the last thing for me to look at on my monitor settings as all the other programs on my computer run without a glitch.  Thanks again for your help... Cheers!

  • Backup copy filenames when importing images

When making a backup copy while importing images into Lightroom3 the backup copy is keeping its original camera raw file name instead of the new file name I am giving to the images I am importing. This just started happening--up until today the backup copies took the new file names. I suspect Operator Error (as usual) but I honestly do not recall having changed any settings or preferences and can't find a place to do so regarding this problem. What's up?

But this problem just cropped up yesterday--I've been importing raw files as DNG's in LR3 for weeks with no issues. Is it possible this could be an intermittent thing?
I can reproduce it all the time. I don't know whether there are any special circumstances that lead to it, but I cannot import a DNG into LR3.2 with a rename and have the 2nd copy carry the same base name as the renamed DNG.

  • No images shown when importing images from external HD

This only happened recently so I'm not sure if this was due to an update in Aperture or MacOS.
Anyways, when I try to import images from an external HD, I cannot see the images. The images are there when I check thru Finder but I cannot see any from the import window in Aperture.
The problem is also inconsistent. There are folders where I can see images but for most I cannot see anything.
    For local disk it works.
Why does this happen and how can I solve this? thanks

Are you sure they aren't in your library already? Have you tried de-selecting "don't import duplicates" and see if that changes anything?

  • Why am I not able to add keywords when importing images?

When I import images into LR, I am unable to add keywords in the relevant window. When I click in the window, it will not let me access. Very frustrating. Does anyone know why?

    Andrew,
I've never seen this problem come up. Can you provide a screen shot? Is the keyword entry panel greyed out? (What do you mean by "will not let me access?").
With a little more info or an example, we might be able to come up with the solution.

  • Where do RAW image file go when importing images into iPhoto?

I've imported images from my camera card into iPhoto but I want to have access to the RAW files format. I was given the option of erasing the data from the card after import but luckily I opted to not erase because I can't seem to find the RAW images on the computer. Does iPhoto not import RAW image files? I want the RAW file format for obvious reasons.

By default all imported photos are copied into the iPhoto library. To edit them in an external editor check the box in the iPhoto preferences to use RAW with external editors or export the photo with kind = original

  • Iphoto won't recognize my iphone when importing images.

I have had problems with importing images from my iphone 4s to my macbook for a while. For some reason, iphoto won't recognize any of the images on my iphone, meaning that I can't import any of them. I have tried unlocking the phone with iphoto open, with it closed and then opening it and without unlocking the phone at all. I have also updated all programs involved. Has anyone had this problem before, and if so how could I fix it? Thanks in advance! (Text in the picture is obviously Swedish, but you catch my drift.)

I figured out the fix for the Mac users having this problem. I connected my iPhone to my iMac and started iTunes. A dialogue came up in iTunes, I OK'd that and then OK'd the usual "Do you trust this Mac" that comes up on my iPhone.
Suddenly Image Capture launched itself and there were all my photos, ready to be downloaded.

  • "The volume for "IMAGE.JPG" cannot be found" problem when importing images

This first started when I hooked up my card reader to my mac. I'd get the above image when I tried to import files off of it. My options are"
    - Cancel - Find Photo… - OK -
OK = Nothing. It flashes and stays.
Find Photo = Navigating to the image, (all the others are grayed out except the one it says it can't find)
Cancel = This actually loads the image, but then the next image has the same issue. Forcing a quit seems to be the only way out.
I want to like apple but this stinks and is unusable.

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • 5 stars not showing up on other computers when importing images that have been worked on. Catalogues settings include write metadata to xmp keywords do show up though

our working group usually one team member imports and completes job in lightroom 5 . All settings on team computers include write metadata to xmp.  Key words show up if another team member adds the images to their catalogue but the 5 stars don't show up.
We use the 5 stars to show images that were worked on and complete.
Would love to sort this issue out as we rely on being able to see the star rating not just keywords.

[Sorry for the delay in getting back.] Of the three files you included in the Dropbox .zip, 2 had no rating, and 1 had a 5-star rating (*research*.dng).  So indeed, the rating didn't get written to those two files and wouldn't show up when they were imported into another catalog.
    A couple of suggestions:
    1. Triple-check that the option Automatically Write Changes Into XMP is set in Catalog Settings > File Handling in everyone's Lightroom.
    2.  After someone sets the rating, check the thumbnail in Library grid mode -- does it have a badge in the upper-right corner indicating the metadata needs to be updated?  If it does, then that means the metadata isn't getting written immediately back to the file:

  • Backing up all imported images?

I watched some LR tutorials at Kelby Training by Matt Kloskowsky. He  suggests you go ahead and let LR create the backup of the files as you  import them, then cull the bad ones and keep the good ones in the LR  catalog. He mentions not worrying about deleting too many in the catalog  because you still have all of them in the backup directories. I guess  that seems okay if people only shoot a few images, but it seems to me  the backup drive would be monsterous in size if you kept every photo you  took in it and again if that drive gets backed up.
Normally, I only  keep 10% to 20% of the shots I take, and keep them backed up (twice).  That's bad enough!
    Any thoughts on Matt's advice?
    M. Jackson

it probably comes down to a workflow issue.
For example, I have a stand-alone backup device for my "complete raws", I supose you would call it.  A colorspace udma.  I just plug my card into it, and load them all.  Then push it asside and load the photos onto my desktop, and load the images into LR normally.  Then cull out and delete images that are mechanically bad.  Then, backup onto my fileserver(s).
So my complete set of images is kept on one device that is strictly a raw backup device.  My sorted images are kept on my desktop, and my network devices.  So I'm only backing up my "keepers" (or, at least, ones that are minimally keepers).  I found out that a photo I don't like today, might be what I need tomorrow, so tend not to go into massive deletions.   I  use filters and collections so I don't have to look at them, and have enough diskspace that I don't mind.  When I run out of disk space, I'll push them off (projects I don't work on anymore) and backthem up elsewhere.
I also have a small portable USB drive that I backup my working images on for transport with my laptop..  Whicn constitutes yet another backup, I suppose.
All in all, it's just a matter of preference.  How much do you _really_ want to preserve your images?
This is something that's going to absolutely destroy future historians!  Film is a passive medium, easy to store and still have something useful in a hundred years.  Digital is not, it's an active medium.  Meaning that in 100 years, there will hardly be any photos from today still around. Only prints, and "official" photos (read: paid for) will be around. There are lots of people finding old film that can be scanned in and referenced. Last year, someone found two suitcases of glass plate negatives (from world war one, I think) in a barn!  But from the digital age, only those who make the effort to keep them preserved will be avalable. And that will be quite a waste...  All those family photos, gone.
    Cheers!

  • Flash CS5 / CS5.5 crashes when importing images, and all of the time

    Hi.
I started working on an animation file in Flash recently.  It was ok at first, but now it crashes all of the time.  It crashes almost 100% of the time when I try to import a sequence of jpegs, but it also seems to crash for no reason at all - when I click on a frame in the timeline, or when I move forward/back through frames on the timeline.
This happened when I was using CS5, so I installed my upgrade copy of 5.5, and that didn't help.  I upgraded my computer from 32bit XP to 64bit Window7.  I'm now running a fresh install of CS5.5 on a fresh install of Windows 7.  It still crashes exactly the same.
I got an error log when I installed the programs.  I don't know if it is related.  It looks like this:

    Hi Tobymare,
5.1.1 is the highest iOS that an iPad 1 can run. If the iPad is crashing, try a reset (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if the crashing issue is resolved.
