Backing Up With Aperture -- Article in MacZealots

I have an article published today in MacZealots magazine: Backing Up With Aperture. It covers the pros and cons of all the various ways to back up your library and other Aperture data.
http://maczealots.com/articles/aperture-backup/

A second on that Steve....thank you for using your clear, comprehensive writing style to share your Ap experience. BTurf is a daily read for me and I have learned SO MUCH from it. As Apple enhances the product (and they WILL), your "roadmap" for understanding will be even more valuable...
thanks again,

  • Any experience backing up an Aperture Library with Crashplan?

To be sure, I'm not using Crashplan for a primary backup. However, in the case of disaster, I'd like to move from my regional backup model to a backing up using a service. I realize that those of us who use a backup services with large libraries are on the fringe, but we all want to keep our libraries, don't we?
The Crashplan forum has few old articles allude to the fact that backing up an Aperture 2 library using Crashplan is not advisable.
The Aperture 3 library format has changed quite a bit.
What have your experiences been using Crashplan and Aperture 3? Have you attempted a restore after significant modification to your Aperture library, such as adjustments, moving projects, adding/deleting images, faces, places, etc.?

I just conducted a test with Aperture 3 and Crashplan. The results were unexpected. Here's how I performed the test, and what I learned:
I created a project, imported files, made some adjustments, and ran a Crashplan backup. Once the backup completed, I opened Aperture, moved projects, made additional edits, including brushes, changed metadata, altered faces, places, and tags. I emptied the trash, then rejected and deleted more files, and changed ratings.
I did the above three times, running Crashplan along the way, even with Aperture open. I restored my library, then compared the original and restored Aperture libraries.
The number of images, faces, places, metadata, adjustments, ratings, trash, and rejected items all matched. I did find two notable discrepancies. The source library when I began the restore had gone from 4.7 GB to 2.49 GB, primarily because I had deleted several movies. The restored library in CrashPlan and on my disk (once restored), was 4.63 GB. When I opened the restored library, it regenerated thumbnails and/or previews. The file resulted in 4.69 GB when complete.
What was taking up the additional 2GB? The movie files were still under the masters folder. They did NOT appear in the rejected items, trash, or any other project. They were, however, in the masters folder. I tried rebuilding the Aperture database, and importing it into a new project. I could not reduce the size of the library because the deleted files remained.
So . . . Crashplan appears to be holding on to these deleted files. The good news is, the database appears to be just fine otherwise. Any ideas on how to repair an Aperture 3 database to remove the files and shrink the library as necessary, if a restore is required?

  • Questions on first time to backing up or achiving with Aperture

    Hi,
I would really appreciate any tips/advice on how to start archiving my images in Aperture. Currently my whole library sits on my Macbook pro (I do a weekly back up on my Time Capsule). But I want to start reducing my library on my macbook pro and start archiving my images properly so I can find them at a later date when I need them. But I haven't a clue. So please let me have your thoughts.
    Thanks
    Catherine

This is perhaps a partial answer leading into another question. I hope I don't derail your question. Because my MBP was getting overloaded with Aperture images I started REFERENCING my new images to an external portable hard drive (Western Digital 300GB FW800) that works flawlessly and fits in the palm of my hand. This works very nice but left me with the task of backing up the external FW hard drive.
My approach has been to use to use one of the cloning software programs to clone my external FW hard drive. I have tried Superduper and Carbon Copy Cloner. I purchased a 1.5 TB external HD that connects to my MBP via eSATA with a Griffin Card. After much to do and frustration I discovered that I had to find a new driver for the Griffin Card and I finally got the hardware and software to work like it was supposed to.
I partitioned my large Terabyte external backup harddrive and made a clone of my Aperature referenced libraries from the external FW harddrive. No problem in making the clone. All of the images are stored on the clone. The problem is that I can't get Aperature to see the clone of my referenced masters and access the clone as if it were the original referenced masters. If I could accomplish this feat I would feel confident that in the future I could simply use my cloned referenced masters as backup and retain all of my Aperture cataloging and adjustments.
Catherine I hope that my additional question will add to your solution and not derail our initial question. Thanks everybody.

  • Few 5DmkII RAW files do not open with Aperture, but OK with other software

Hi, I have two RAW files which I cannot import with Apple Aperture. The files open fine with Canon Digital Photo Professional, Raw Photo Processor and dcraw (and with various programs on my Windows 7 laptop) and I'm able to create TIFF files from the RAW files with every other software.
    Detail about the files:
    A. they are two first frames of burst (used auto bracketing, which takes 3 images in burst mode, to create HDR image)
    B. there is nothing strange in the files, they are normal RAW files and file size is normal as well (other 28.4MB and 32.7MB)
    C. both files process OK in above mentioned softwares and there are no blocks missing from created TIFF images, also preview JPG in the RAW file is OK
    D. Mac OS X Quick view (press spacebar in Finder) and Preview do show these two RAW images well (I assume they use the embedded JPG image)
I have installed all the updates available in "Apple icon" -> "Software update..." function. Therefore I have Apple Aperture version 3.0.2. Computer is MacPro:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 12 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
    SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
How I can submit the files for Apple to create fix? I searched for Apple Aperture support but there is only this forum, no email address or anything. Do they read this forum?

Some clarifications and answers to your questions:
    First to Tony Gay:
I try the feedback later today even they claim "Please know that while we do read these submissions, we cannot guarantee a personalized response.", which is original reason why I'm why I wrote this question here. The url you provided did not work but this should:
    http://www.apple.com/support/feedback
This is not relevant to sRAW files, I did not change the between camera taking automated bracketed shots the image format for 2 shots to sRAW and took 3rd with RAW, that is not even possible.
I have copied the images from card to hard drive, not trying to read from the card itself. However now you mention tried also from card = exactly same result. Tried desktop (different HD) and external USB and external eSata, all same result.
Get info doesn't show anything wierd for the images. All other 192 RAWs from same shoot were imported with exact same methodology (as well as 60000 images before that).
    Then to gosuk2:
There is no HDR setting in camera, I took the images FOR HDR, but did not use any specific setting, just used 1 1/3 stop bracketing and 2 second times when camera automatically takes 1 1/3 underexposed, correct exposure and 1 1/3 overexposed image (the order of images can naturally be changed via custom function in camera). All this is unrelevant since I shoot quite often HDR with this method (=more than 500 images each month) this way and they have always been fine before these two images.
I see the files in import panel and I the don't use import dublicates setting so that doesn't affect the situation (why it would, Aperture things files are broken).
Again HDR cannot be combined in 5DmkII, it's just automatically shoot 3 bracketed shots.
No I don't get same result no matter what I do, it's just these two files. My other ~5000 HDR bracketed RAWs are importing fine as well as all burst/shots taken in continous shooting mode.
I'm very aware how stacking of images works, but I do not understand relevance to this issue. I can not import the images at all to Apple Aperture, after importing all images Aperture displays dialog saying that following files could not be imported to Aperture, then displays list with both of these files in the list and gives possibility to locate the files in Finder.
I have used Aperture since version 1 and I have 70000 images imported successfully to Aperture. Earlier I have seen this dialog "Aperture could not import image" only after hard drive/card failure. However then images cannot be used in Canon's DPP (Digital Photo Professional) or any other RAW software - now the problem ONLY EXISTS in Aperture all other RAW converters are able to open and process SUCCESSFULLY these images.
So I'm not whining that Aperture is not good, but if it starts to work only part of the images in future and I have to process rest of the images with Canon DPP (that program is really lousy on usability standpoint) then I'm not so happy with Aperture anymore.
Will report here if I get any comments back from Apple through the Feebback tool.

  • Apple TV 1st Gen + iTunes 10 + Photo Sync (with Aperture 3) = No Sync

I recently started to experience the same issues that others have reported regarding not being able to sync their Apple TV classic (1st generation) with iTunes 10.
I grudgingly disconnected my Apple TV from iTunes which wiped out all the content. Then when I started a new sync, the Apple TV (and my iMac) froze when trying to connect.
So, I disconnected them again, and quickly set the sync preferences to a "Custom" sync. After an hour of playing around with the settings, and turning on (one by one) syncing of video content, music and podcasts, I've narrowed it down ... to Photo syncing with Aperture.
All of the other content that iTunes will let me select, syncs fine. I've re-synced my entire music library, but if I even setup iTunes to sync 1 photo from Aperture to my Apple TV ... freeze-o-matic.
Anyone else run into this issue and/or been able to find a workaround to fix it?

Finally found answer, many thanks to:

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your library has become a secondary (streaming only) library only (it is possible to turn syncing off by ctrl-clicking on the Apple TV listing in the device list and choosing 'Turn Off Syncing" from the contextual menu) and you need to reconnect your library as a primary library.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • Imac (10.6.8) and Macbook Pro R (10.8) with Aperture??s

I have an Imac with Aperture 3.2.4 that works fine on the current system (10.6.8).
I just got a new Macbook Pro Retina for travel that has 10.8 on it  that I installed Aperture on, updated it to the current version,  and added a few photos onto it to experiment with. However, now it says I have to rebuild the Library for my old photos which "can't be undone." Glad it did it with just a few photos.
My dilemma...IF I use this laptop on my trip for editing photos and return, am I going to be able to import them back to my Imac with the "old Aperture 3.2.4" or not? Or, am I soon going to be forced to upgrade my Imac to the more current OS system. I hate updating when everything works great!

You will not be able to go backward.
Once the library is updated (or you have a new library made with the new version of Aperture) that library will not open in the old version of Aperture.

  • Printing Success with Aperture 1.5.2 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180

With so many "hit-and-miss" posts regarding printing, I thought I'd post my result with Aperture 1.5.2 and my newly-acquired HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
Firstly, I have my monitor calibrated using ColorVision's Spyder Express. It's a cost-effective solution to monitor calibration and what I see on the screen is what I'm seeing in the print. I calibrate weekly.
Secondly, I'm using HP's Advanced Photo Glossy Paper for prints. HP provides the ICC profiles for their papers (and thus far, they seem to be dead-on accurate).
Thirdly, and I believe this is where issues can occur, is to set, via the Print Driver, color management as Application Managed. This bypasses the default of allowing the printer to manage color for you. This allows Aperture to use the ICC profile of the printer and calculate the proper color "conversion".
Finally, via the Apple's support article on optiziming print (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302821) save the customized printer setup for a specified print size, paper, etc.
I have made 20 prints thus far and all have come out satisfactory. The only "tip" I'd make is that I noticed the gamma setting in the print dialogue is ideally set at 1.15. Otherwise, the print seems to be a bit dark.

I just got a B9180 too so thought I would try printing from Aperture. As you suggested I set Gamma to 1.15 - but I still feel the prints are a bit dark. Tried 1.20 but that looked identical to 1.15!

  • HT201250 Can I back up with time machine AND store additional files on the same external drive?

I just bought an external drive to move and archive some files off my iMac to free up some space. I'm being asked if I want to use the drive to back up files with Time Machine. Can I use this drive to do both? (Back up with TM AND store other files?
    Your input is appreciated.

Technically you can but it is not a very good idea at all. The reason it is a flawed idea is if the HD fails (not really if but when) you will have defeated the whole idea of backup. A failure means you will lose the data files you stored on it and it's backup! A good backup plan has at least 2 forms of backup because backups can fail too. I would strongly recommend getting at least one additional external HD and use it for storing the data files you wanted off the internal HD and use the second for a Time Machine backup drive.
Personally I have 3 external HD's attached to my computer. Disk 1 is my Time Machine backup, Disk 2 is a Bootable Clone of my internal HD and Disk 3 stores my music, photography and movie libraries.
Please read these articles, they will discuss different backup strategies and I think you will see that each suggest redundant backups.

  • Using Places in iPhoto with aperture photos

If we have a picture in aperture with the City and Country Name attribute filleds, this picture in iphoto will not have the info. So, iPhoto no uses the EXIF City and Country Name fields.
are there any solution to use the exif info filled in apeture with Places in iPhoto?
    Thanks.

I am not familiar with Aperture so I don't know what it can do or if any helper programs/plug ins will do with Aperture.
However there are other Geotagging programs out there. One that is very easy to use in conjunction with Google Earth is Graphics Connverter. With GC, you can open Google Earth, find the location of you want to tag your photo with, then switch over to GC and use the menu item to geotag the selected photos (you can do many photos at once) with the currently displayed Google Earth location. In addition there is a menu command to simply type in coordinates if you do not want to use Google Earth. GC can also tag using GPS data logger files.
GC will write the coordinates to the EXIF data and I have done it myself on both normal JPGs as well as Olympus RAW format. I know when I geotag with GC and then add the photos to iPhoto, iPhoto sees the tags just fine and show their locations. I assume Aperture would do the same.
iPhoto can tag photos as well, but it only writes the data to the database and doesn't actually add the info to the EXIF of the photos themselves until you export the photos out of iPhoto. Do to do it with iPhoto is a multi step process that would require adding them to iPhoto, tagging them, then exporting them back out of iPhoto. I think CG would be an easier solution.

  • Help with Aperture 3 printing to Epson R1800 please

No I haven't got the wrong forum, I think I will get the best answer here. I am a fully paid up member of the Lightroom 2 club and like to use both as I am sure others here do.
I cannot get a good print from Aperture 3, there is always a slight magenta colour cast. Prints from Lightroom and CS4 are perfect! And yes all settings are correct, I am not a beginer at this. This is with custom Permajet paper profiles and with Colormunki profiles. And as I have said prints from Lightroom and CS4 using a digital dog test print are spot on.
I remember back in earlier versions of Lightroom printing to the R1800 was problematic and the only way to get round this was to go into the ColorSync Utility and and under Devices and then the default Epson Media type, change the Current Profile to the paper profile that you wished to use. It now seems that this is also the only solution for A3. Doing this will give me an identical print to LR and CS4.
Now was this a problem with Lightroom or the R1800 driver? I am using the latest driver V6.23.  Also I am using Aperture 3.0.2 and OSX 10.6.3.
I would be grateful for any help.

    Hi Ian,
I am glad to hear you're getting good prints from LR and CS4. I am not aware of any outstanding issues with print color management in Lightroom (the print path is pretty solid and conforms to the OS requirements, and will perform correctly as long as the driver also conforms to the OS requirements; many recent drivers do, some older ones do not).
FYI, I understand you feel that there are forum participants here who may be able to help answer your question with Aperture. Though that may indeed be the case, that does not make it an appropriate use of this forum. (As an analogy, many forum participants here are also well-qualified to answer Photoshop questions, but Photoshop questions should be directed to the Photoshop forum, instead of here.)

  • Still problems with uploading articles in folio builder

    Hello,
Read much information on this forum but i still don't have a solution for my problem. And here is my problem.
I had a course how to create a digital publication. So went back to work and try to do the same as what i did at the course.
Installed InDesign CS5.5 and the last folio producer tools en folio panel. Than I create a folio via the folio panel en voila it was created. So far so good.
Than I try to add an article to this newly created folio but for some reason I can't get it in the folio and I got this message
An error has occured while updating article layouts. The InDesign file for the layout cannot be found. (Than in Dutch because I have a Dutch version)
So what I already tried is the following:
    - use another Adobe-ID to log in the folio panel (no succes)
    - uninstalled the publishing parts en reinstalled again the newest parts (no succes)
    - create article via import (also no succes)
    - create a local folio and than add a article (no succes)
    - Also locate the InDesign file on another location (no succes)
When i create the article the spinner keeps on turning. When I than login to the digitalpublishing.adobe.com with the same adobe-id I see the article with a red frame around it. Which says "Corrupt layout"
Than I send the InDesign file of an article to someone else and he can upload this file without any problems. And I am sure I have all rights/permissions which I should have.
Is it possible that you can have problems with uploading articles because of network settings or combinations with other software?
Has somebody a solution for this really frustrating problem?

    Hi pbremmer!
Are you using Mac och PC?
    /Henrik
