Backing up with hardrive and iCloud

So, I'm just learning about iCloud.  It's a very neat concept and even though I'm a little concerned about using it, I'm willing to take a leap of faith with Apple.  Since using it, I've noticed that you can't back up with both your hardrive and iCloud.  I don't feel comfortable just using iCloud as a back up.  What if someone were to hack into my account?  What if the service was down?  Has anyone figured out how to backup using both?

There should be no conflict between the two volumes, BUT you shouldn't consider that you have TWO clones: if that drive fails you lose them both at the same time. You can only say that you have TWO clones if they are on separate DRIVES.

You got it with that same apple id thing. You can use different apple id's, but then they will not sync. Apple does allow as many free apple id's as you want, but they are in the business to make money.

  • My ipod touch will not back up with itunes and allow me to update to newest software

I am having trouble getting my ipod touch to back up with itunes and allowing me to update to newest suftware.  It has been backing up for over 3 days and the status bar has not moved.

Terminate the backup. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod. Reboot the iPod. Reset the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Yes, I am having this problem too (although I was sharing via a "copy link" command, not via email). My workaround fix was to log into iCloud.com via Safari and get the share link there.

    Hi North450,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that the HDD was not working and is replaced in your J105 Desktop, if you have created the recovery discs before the HDD got crashed. I suggest you to install the OS (Operating System) using the Recovery discs to factory reset as it will create the default recommended partitions required for the computer and I’m sorry to inform you that the SATA drivers are not available in our support website for Windows Xp, but can be download from the Intel. Below is the link to download the driver:

  • HT3529 Issue with messaging and icloud after ios7.1 update. Need Help!!!

My husband and I have been having problems with our iphone 5c since the ios7.1 update. We can't seem to send messages to each other now without incurring data charges, because our icloud messaging seems to have both phones synced to my itunes account. I have tried logging into itunes under each of our user id and syncing our respective phones to them, but it is not working. Any Ideas on what to do to fix this?
When we updated last week on Friday, we had other problems with loss of ringtones, no calls coming through do to the do not disturb feature being fully enabled and no alert to incoming calls while phone is locked. Spent a good hour on the phone with support and didn't resolve, tried resetting, rebooting etc. We ended up in an apple store on Saturday, where the guy got the ringtones, etc. working, but disabled our messaging and when tryng to sign back in, we found both phones linked to my itunes account. Since then, having problems with messaging... At a loss as to what to do now.

Thanks. We did do all of that, and still kept having problems. I finally figured it out about 5 minutes after I posted. After signing each phone into respective itunes accounts and setting up all of the messaging features to sign into the same, I had to disable the "send as sms" feature inside messaging. Once I was able to force routing text messages addressed to his phone back through imessage from turning this off, my phone finally recognized his imessage seperate account and let the message go through properly. After a couple of tests, then I enabled the "send as sms" again, and it seems to be working fine.
This update has really been a pain, caused us several issues this go around.

  • Back up from computer and icloud failed...

My ipad 2's home button was not responding properly. I was adviced to restore the device by the retailed seller. I backed up the device to both icloud and computer. I've been using icloud for a long time. Later, I hard reseted the device reloaded it from the computer; however, pages, keynotes and numbers files are not loaded properly. The folders and file names are there but the files are missing. By the way icloud synchronization has stopped due to some unidentified error. Please HELP!!! I can not recover my works.

Thanks, this is what I thought!
I understand that iCloud doesn't back up apps though? Is this correct or does it back up the same content as iTunes?
The other issue I was having with restoring from iCloud (which I initially tried to do before restoring from iTunes) was that the restore would commence and a few minutes from the end it would disconnect from the Wifi and fail. I did this a few times and it kept failing. I don't think this is my wifi as it works perfectly fine for my Mac and iPad during this time...

  • I had duplicated contacts on my old iPhone.  Went with Lion and iCloud, and the duplicates were gone.  New iPhone yesterday and now all my contacts are duplicated again.  How do I resolve?

When I first signed up with iCloud (and still had Mobile Me), my contacts all double or tripled, or more in my contact list.  When I went with Lion and fully integrated iCloud, that issue resolved itself.  I got a new iPhone yesterday, and when it was up and running, everything was fine.  This morning, I notice that my contacts are all duplicated again.  My personal contact is in my phone 10 times.  How do I resolve this?  My iTunes sync setting does not have me syning my contacts, it should just be in iCloud.  Thanks for any help.

  • Backing up with clones and archiving

I am backing up my OSX with a cloning software and a separate archiving software. Not too paranoid, but I want to know if there's any harm in having two separate clones on two separate volumes of a firewire connected hard drive, each being maintained by a different software product. Also, any harm from archiving to volume on hard drive with DataBackUP and also archiving peer-to-peer with CrashPlan.Or is that going to be too much(i.e.will the software programs get in each other's way,if you will).

There should be no conflict between the two volumes, BUT you shouldn't consider that you have TWO clones: if that drive fails you lose them both at the same time. You can only say that you have TWO clones if they are on separate DRIVES.

  • Backing up with SuperDuper and CCC question

I just got started with SD and CCC and have tried to use both of them to back up over the network but haven't had any luck.
    What I'm trying to do:
-- Open SuperDuper or CCC (not at the same time) on Mac1 then log-on to Mac2 and tell SuperDuper or CCC to back up from Mac2 onto Ext.HD1?
Does this technique work, or do I have to open the SD/CCC on the Mac whose drive I want to backup and copy to the external HD from there?
Also, when SuperDuper requires a DiskImage to backup, do I have to create the disk image in DiskUtility first, or does SD do that in preparation to the backup process?
Thanks for helping me get clear on this. First time using backup software.

The instructions on how to make clones are fairly clear; and if you
stick to one or the other, doing so should be fairly easy. I use CCC
most exclusively, and the Bombich web site has helpful instruction
on how to do most things in the header; menus beneath the icons
    are generally adequate.
Over a network, the issue may be in how the drives and computers
are seen; since you can assign an ethernet address to most any
thing networked (especially printers, and computers) so maybe this
could be something to check into; or avoid if that complicates clones.
You can use the native Mac OS X Disk Utility to make back ups and
disk images; and you can restore from a disk image created by D.U.
So, you have three ways to make backups of the system or move it.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner, since it was an early favorite and it works.
You have to make a clone from the one you want to copy/clone; so
you will have the data saved on the other drive. The question is not
one that I'd consider; but I learned how to make clones as a part of
a hardware failure troubleshooting interval, which took me a month
after the authorized Apple tech could not find problems with my iMac
yet I could repeatedly find and reproduce the fault; so I did all I could
and then discussed the matter direct with AppleCare; for a real repair.
    So, now I clone both computers full drive contents to an external FW;
and eventually wipe both computer's drives, after saving a new clone.
And while I have them wiped; I have Disk Utility zero-overwrite them.
That way, there is no fragmentation and I reclone the content back.
Maybe you could explain what steps you are having issue with in the
clone or backup process, and to simplify this, use one of the methods.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Syncing with gmail and iCloud across 3 devices

I cannot get my devices to sync properly (MacBook, iPad mini, iPhone 5c).  I use Gmail and iCloud, and it seems to muddy the waters.  My contacts, for example, are a mess.  As someone who is normally on top of the tech stuff, I feel confused and very frustrated.  Is it time to get rid of Gmail?  Do I need to wipe my data and start fresh?  For some reason there just seem to be too many settings to get everything to work seamlessly.  If anyone has faced similar issues please let me know if you have any solutions--whether it is a step by step process, or visit or the Genius Bar...
    Thanks!

iCloud doesn't sync email; changing your iCloud settings won't effect your ability to sync email.  Just set up the same Gmail account on all your devices.  Unless you set it up as a POP account, it will stay in sync across your devices.  (Only IMAP and Exchange accounts sync across your devices; POP email doesn't.)

  • Problem with Storage and iCloud

Hello! I have a problem, and I've read some other threads here and tried what was suggested, but it's still not working for me.
I am using an iPhone 4s. I have purchased 15.0 GB total iCloud storage and I have 10.5 GB available.
This is my problem. I get an error message constantly saying that my storage is full, even though there's barely anything on my phone---and when I say barely anything, I mean it: I have about 3 pages of apps, no games, no large apps, and the most photos I can take before I run out of space is about 30 (!!!) which *****. As I mentioned, there is plenty of space on the cloud (10.5 GB free).
I read on another thread that this is a bug and that I should restart my phone and then do a new backup to the cloud. Only when I try to do that, it says it will take 80+ hours to complete. I suppose to could just leave my phone at home where there's a wi-fi signal and not use my phone for 3+ days, but realistically, that is just not an option; also my wi-fi *****, is slow, and goes out from time to time. If I leave of course I lose my wi-fi signal and the backup stops, and then I have to start it over when I get back.
What should I do? This has become a problem and is getting worse; I used to be able to take 100 photos or more before it filled up and cut me off, but the number has been steadily decreased over the past 2 months, to now filling up at 30 or sometimes less with short videos. Halp!

Sound like there may be something corrupt on your phone if you only have a few apps.  2.46 GB for Other is also quite large, unless you have a massive amout of app data from one of your apps.  I would suggest you back up your phone on your computer, then restore it.  To do this, do the following:
Connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes, go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTune sync settings and click Back Up Now.
After the backup finishes, go to the Summary tab and click Restore.
Your phone will be restored, then it will restart and reappear in iTunes and give you the option to either set it up as a new phone or restore from backup.  Choose to restore from backup, selecting the backup you made at the beginning to restore from.
When finished, check to capacity bar again to see if the values look more reasonable.  If so, try your iCloud backup again.

  • Problems with Mail and iCloud.

I have upgraded to Mavericks on my iMac. I have a Gmail email address that I have used for years: [email protected] I recently also decided to have an iCloud email address as a backup/alternative:  [email protected]
Since getting this iCloud email address I now find that whilst I can receive emails which are sent to me with either address, I can only send emails using the .icloud.com address. If I try to send one from my .gmail address it simply dumps itself into "Outbox" and just sits there. I've tried most things, including disabling the .icloud.com address in Mail Preferences, but when I do this I can't send any emails at all! Anybody else had this problem and, if so, did you manage to fix the it? If there is no easy fix, how do I get rid of the .icloud.com email address entirely so that I can go back to using just my Gmail address?
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

I decided to disable iCloud - hated that thing anyway - and I modified my user name in the preferences in Mail by adding @gmail.com to the end of my user name. Guess what??? I can now both send and receive emails using my original @gmail.com address!!!  Forget what the "science" (or Apple) tells you - use good old fashioned common sense and put in the settings that you should have in the first place.
iCloud has its' place but, quite frankly, it causes me more headaches than solutions so I've turned it off on all my bits of kit. I really don't want to share all my photos, emails, videos blah de blah de blah with every bit of Apple kit I have - I like to use each one individually. Yes, I know all you Apple purists will be calling me a Philistine but you know what?? I really don't give a tinkers cuss!! Each to his own I and just love the way I have it now - my Wife's iPad and iPhone don't interefere with my laptop or iMac and I can delete what I want from whatever bit of kit I want without it deleting the same from every other bit of kit!! iCloud has certain advantages but it can also be very dangerous for the unwary!!

  • Problem with AppleID and iCloud account

    Hi guys,
I hope that you can help me with my problem.
I gave my Apple account to a friend with new iPhone 4s (mine is iPhone5) because he was waiting for his new credit card to make his own. After he got his credit card he made his own Apple ID, but unfortunately mine is a mess now including iCloud account. So basicly the problem is this:
    1) when i try to update or download an App on the store i have to enter my password for my apple ID but it's changed
    2) somehow the verifying email on my iCloud account is not mine e-mail but his and in the verification e-mail it's his name written on top ( Dear Mr. Peter...)
I tried to remake my account and it worked with the exact same email adress and password as the existing, which tells me that the old one was "simply" erased
But now when i try to download app that i previosly had on my device it tries to download it from iCloud which i can't verify. So now i don't have iCloud, if i delete the old one it deletes my contacts (i restore it from an earlier backup but it restores the iCloud account again).
So can i make new iCloud account and somehow keep my contacts and erase the old iCloud account so i can download the apps again.
Thak you in advance and i hope you can understand what my problem is

Your first mistake was letting someone else use your Apple ID. That's like giving out a credit card number and not very smart. I think your best bet is to call Apple and ask for Account Security in order to straighten this out.
