Backing up with iOS 4 on a iPod Touch 2G

I had to Restore the iPod Touch to get the iOS 4 onto it. This took forever (nearly 12 hours). I played around with the Folders and rearranged the nearly 300 Apps. Then I tried to Sync it. Well...it tried and tried, but eventually the screen on the iPod Touch would go blank, then I got a wheel in the middle the screen...then I got the APPLE symbol. The Backup seems to stop about 1/4 of the way (from looking on the progress bar on iTunes. The iPod Touch then sits with the APPLE symbol for a long time...in fact the APPLE symbol is on iTunes also. In iTunes, it drops the iPod Touch totally off. I have tried this about 5 times. I have found (http://appletoolbox.com/2010/06/itunes-9-2-the-iphone-cannot-be-synced-a-duplica te-file-name-was-specified/ )that if you have iToner in your Plugins, you have to remove it and they say you have to stop the syncing of Notes. I did not have iToner (not my problem), but I did sync Notes. So, I untoggled the Note syncing, but this did not help. Eventually, the iPod Touch comes back to life, but it will not connect to iTunes. I have been messing with this for nearly 20 hours. HELP.
Now, as I am syncing the iPod Touch...Sync in Progress...it is making beeps and squeeks. This in NOT normal. Then it did the same thing as I explained above. PLEASE help me with this situation.
I have just tried, again, to backup. It got to about 20 % on the iTunes screen, but it had already dumped me out on the iPod Touch. I cannot get this to backup. HELP. It is now Syncing my Contacts, etc., but this is really getting annoying. It is taking forever.
It is now installing the new Applications (which is nice), but I want to have a secure Backup. When will this occur? I cannot keep this up for the rest of the day. I have things to do, important things. This is suppose to be a tool to be more productive...not these last two days, though. I hope someone comes on and tells me how to fix this. Or at least, APPLE coming out with an iTunes fix that will make this all go away. I am praying for either solution...whichever it is...please come soon.
Now it is Syncing "Fr. Ignatius' iPod". It says the iPod sync is complete. OK to disconnect.
I have looked in iTunes, the last Backup I had was at 9:37 AM, yesterday. It has not, as of yet, been able to backup on iOS 4. Please help me.

I have a very old Powerbook, so everything tends to go pretty slow. This is how the update went for me:
Download update, 1.5Mb connection, took about 30 minutes.
iTunes warns I don't have enough disk space to back up my media (songs and vids), so I click the option to go ahead without backing up the media.
There might have been one or two other alerts I clicked through.
It then opened a small white window in the middle of the screen with a blue progress bar that said backing up my iPod.
This took about 4 hours.
Then the iPod screen turned black with a white Apple and a white progress bar, being the typical screen for when you restore or update the OS.
When that finished, it rebooted but it took a very long time, then it rebooted itself again. I got the lock screen and the animation of the Slide to Unlock shimmering was horribly choppy and slow. I tried to move around in Springboard and it was like a slideshow the framerate was so bad. I tried to open a few settings and things and it was so slow and unresponsive it was unusable. A blue error box came up complaining about one of my mail accounts. Suddenly the whole thing froze completely.
Then the screen went back and I got the white spinning "doing something" icon.
It spun for a very long time. At once point it stopped spinning and I thought it had locked up, but after a few minutes it resumed.
Finally it restarted itself and once it booted up iTunes took over again, and installed my apps which took a couple more hours, and then some of the things I had synced, such as podcasts.
Eventually it was all done and the iPod was usable, except for the WiFi being ruined and it no longer having enough memory to run many of my apps.
So, my recommendation to you is to tell it to update and once the Backing Up starts, just leave it alone for how long it takes. It seems to go through a whole series of bizarre things that give you a panic attack thinking your device is ruined. It also had that interim period where I started using it when I really shouldn't have. It sounds like you started doing the same thing I did as far as starting to try to use it before the process is complete and then you get the black screen with white spinner just like when you shut an iPod or iPhone down.
Good luck!

  • Can I still use my iPhone 4S with iOS 8 as an iPod Touch?

hello, I currently bought an iPhone 4S 32gb with iOS 8 on eBay and i realized it had already been reported stolen so I cannot use it as a phone but can use it as an iPod. If I restore it, would I be able to use it as an iPod again or will it leave me on the activation screen ? Please explain.

Because articles saying "Everything is fine; no problems," would be very short, far less sensational and would garner fewer viewers and less interesting comments.

  • Performance and Graphical Issues with iOS 4.3 and IPod Touch 4th Generation

My Ipod touch is only a week old and I just updated it to iOS 4.3 from the original firmware, but after I updated the device it seemed to start generating white lines in the status bar area unexpectedly. Then at the same time my device would stop responding for a couple of seconds or become extremely slow. I also notice that my album art is misplaced and/or obscured and nothing is misplaced on iTunes. I've restored it two to three times. The device can not be downgraded so I'm not sure what to do.

Hmmmm... you know what... some of my album art was misplaced also... mainly for my "Unknown Artists" but still... Oh yeah and everyone knows about the glitch on the top bar, theres a post with about 20,000 views on it so maybe you should check there

  • How to go back to the ios 5 in the ipod touch 4g?

My entire ipod 4g is acting nuts.
    1) I open any kind of apps and it crashes.
    2) I try to use my camera and it lags.
    3) Keyboard lags.
    3) My photos are appearing out of focus.

    5) I can hear youtube but CAN NOT SEE the videos when I try to MIRROR it to APPLE TV from
        my touch 4g.
    6) I use VEVO to mirror videos from my ipod 4g it works i can hear it and see the videos.
I WANT TO GO BACK TO IOS 5 Can anyone tell me step by step how.
Do I need to take it to a apple tech?

I'd really like to think the whole iOS 6 fiasco is just a big practical joke... Any minute now Apple are going to say "just kidding - here's the REAL update, with decent maps, street view, a working App Store and none of the stability issues everyone is experiencing... Unfortunately I fear this is a nightmare from which we will not awaken. One YouTube ranted says he fells like "he has installed Windows Vista all over again"...

  • HT4436 I am using IOS 4.1 in Ipod touch. I would like to take my data back using icloud. I am not able to enable icloud in to my ipod touch. please help me for the same.

I am using IOS 4.1 in Ipod touch. I would like to take my data back using icloud. I am not able to enable icloud in to my ipod touch. please help me for the same. Basically I am trying to take back to upgrade my ios to 5 or 6 version.

You can't back up to iCloud until you update to iOS 5 or higher.  You will have to back up your iPod on your computer using iTunes.  Update iTunes on your computer to the latest version, then connect your iPod to your computer, open iTunes, if iTunes give you a pop-up asking if you want to update your iPod, decline.  Then click on the name of your iPod in iTunes, go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer any purchased media to your iTunes library.  Next, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click on Back Up Now to back up your iPod on your computer.
When it's done backing up, click on Check for Update (or Update) on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings.  Allow your iPod to update, and leave it connected to your computer.  At the end, it will restart and give you the option to restore to the iTunes backup you made earlier.  Choose this option to restore your backup and sync your apps and other iTuens media to your phone.
This process is outlined in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972, under "If you are attempting to update using a Mac or PC with which you normally sync".

ive got a new pc with windows 7 and my ipod touch 4th gen is synced with my old pc ,how can i back up the photos and music on the ipod to my new pc ?

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    iOS: How to back up
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content such as music, videos, and photos synced to the device, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software available to assist you with this task.

Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

  • I downloaded the new iOS software on my iPod touch 4th gen. Now it's saying connect to computer with iTunes, I only have a iPad I don't have a laptop is there any way to bypass this

I Downloaded the new iOS software on my iPod touch now when I turn it on it has a USB cord and says connect to computer and iTunes, well the only other

No. You have to connect the iPod to a computer and restore via iTunes.
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Find a friend or go to an Apple store.

    No.
Also, do you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

    You can't
. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.

  • Hi. Please help me with this information on the iPod Touch

I am doing my AS level graphic products coursework on iPod Touchs.
I need help with a few questions I need to answer that I can not find info on.
Please can anyone help me with the following:
How the iPod Touch is produced? (Batch Production, Mass Production etc.)
What material the back of the iPod Touch is made from?
How the iPod is manufactured? (The stages used to make it)
Please can anyone answer these questions.
    Thanks

    Hi Matty,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This Discussion board is not officially monitored by Apple so your question is unlikely to be answered by them, probably just the odd pedantic poster.
In an effort to actually help may I direct you to this link - [Apple and the Environment|http://www.apple.com/environment] other than this you may be able to contact Apple through official links - [HERE|http://www.apple.com/contact>
This might be some help in your project.

  • Using Apple IOS Numbers on my iPod Touch 4th gen, where would I find... ummm... let's say b200?

Using Apple IOS Numbers on my iPod Touch 4th gen,
where would I find... ummm... let's say b200??
I use the row numbers and column alphabet all the time, and yet they don't appear on the IOS5 version of Numbers.
This is kinda short-sighted, isn't it? On the desktop version they show up just by clicking on a cell.

Yeah, we in the real world call it stupid design.
I discovered a real stupid, stupid, stupid way of seeing the header columns and the row numbers. You need to select a cell, and double tap it and the keypad pops up, at the top of the keypad window is a black wide tool button-bar with "42", "a clock symbol ", a "T" and an "="  The "42" stands for numbers, stars dollar signs, ±, etc. The "Clock symbol" is to put in days, hours, minutes... that sort of thing. The "T" is for words. AND the "=" is for formulas and stuff. HOWever, when you selct the "=" the column header (ABC...etc) and the Row numerators appear! Done so you CAN select certain column and rows to include those certain cells for calculations.
What a crappy design, right? Must be an engineer without any human interface design skills whatsoever who designed THIS Numbers for ios GUI... you have to hunt through crap to find the simplest of spreadsheet information. A real human interface designer would have made it easy option (for aesthetic reasons or "save space" Hah. Save space on a spreadsheet... why do you think they call them SPREADsheets anyway?).
And while we are on the Stupid, Engineer-Minded GUI, whose idea was to make you shake your ios device to "UNDO"?  There is plenty of space where the title "Spreedsheets"  and 3 toolbar buttons are located at the top of the spreadsheet workspace for a simple ø <--(circle with a line symbol)
This Numbers for IOS needs a big retooling.
