Backing up with rsync - colons in file names

I'm trying to back up to my Time Capsule from a 10.4.10 system using rsync. However, the TC doesn't seem to like files with ":" in the path name, which many of my files seem to have - if I try to touch a file on the TC, say
touch "a:b"
I get a "file name to long" error.
Does anyone know a workaround for this?
I'm also getting errno 7 on some of the file rsync is trying to copy. Haven't figured out what is triggering this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Idris33,
It really depends on what you are backing up. For almost every file, it won't matter whether the resource fork is being copied. If I use rsync, however, I must use the -E option, because I make heavy use of "text clippings" for some things, and text clippings are useless without the resource fork.
If you are making a backup of a given HOME folder with the intention that it be a completely restorable and portable "environment," as I do, resource forks will be mandatory. If, on the other hand, you simply want to back up the majority of your files (with the exception of those entirely dependent on resource forks, such as the aforementioned text clippings), rsync can be used without the -E option.
One thing that puzzles me, though, is why this is an issue with your configuration. I don't use the Airport Extreme to share a network drive, but it would seem to me that an HFS+ volume, being shared over the network, would accept data without "splitting" the resource fork. Does the AE only share a drive over the network using SMB (which would explain this phenomenon), or is it possible that you are mounting it via SMB by choice? If possible, can you mount the drive via AFP?

  • OneDrive stopped returning files with a "+" in its file name.

    Hi,
    My app creates a folder in OneDrive in the name of the app and saves a data file with the same name in it.  My app name contains a "+" in the name.  For example "Menu+ Inventory.dat"
    All was working well for last couple of years and suddenly OneDrive is not returning files with a "+" in its name for the last few days.  Many of my app users will loose data if the file couldn't be retrieved from OneDrive.
    // Runs a search query on SkyDrive to find a matching file.
    function searchForFile(path) {
    var whenFolderFound = _searchForFolder();
    var skyDriveSearchPath = "/me/skydrive/search?q=" + path;
    // Runs async search for the user-specified file.
    var whenFilesFound = WL.api({
    path: skyDriveSearchPath,
    method: "GET"
    }).then(function (response) {
    if (response != null) {
    return WinJS.Promise.wrap(response);
    } else {
    inMemoryFile = null;
    return WinJS.Promise.wrap(false);
    In the SkyDrive Roaming Data sample, in the above function, if the skyDriveSearchPath has the above mentioned filename, the response doesn't have the file.  The sample app will create the file, save data with that name, but does not read the file. It
    can read other files with no "+" in the file name.
    Is there a change in OneDrive naming specs recently?

    Sorted. Well sort of. I still have the problem but I know why. Apparently O2 will not allow anyone to send an attachment which has a space in the name. They claim that this reduces spam - no idea why they think that will stop spam but there you go...

  • Rsync recopies files with diacritics in the file names.

    I am using the following command to copy files from an ext3 linux computer to my Mac:
    rsync -rptuv --delete --progress [email protected]:/home/myusername/Music/English/ /Users/myusername/Music/Music/
    The problem is that if the file name contains a diacritic (such as "Sinéad O'Connor" or "Déjà Vu", the file gets deleted and recopied, even if the file hasn't changed. (If I run the rsync command twice in a row, the file gets deleted and copied twice ina row.)
    Note that the rest of my library gets ignored, appropriately, since it hasn't changed.
    What is my mistake in the rsync command?

    Not sure if this is a bug with Leopard or I'm being stupid (possibly the later) but... Has anyone else experienced this issue and do you know what is causing it? I am currently unable to send a file that has a space in the file name. The only change on my system that has occurred since I last sent and email in a similar way is I've updated my OS from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2. Any ideas how to fix it?

  • How to auto save output with date added to file name, and email the results?

    Hi,
    We found a script to capture disk space usage, that automatically places the results into an Excel file. We would like the script to autosave this file to a specific directroy with the date ran as part of teh file name. We would then like these results to

  • Save As Script with predefined path and file name

    Hello,
    Livecycle version: 8.2.1.4029.1.523496
    The aim of the script I have is to save the livecycle form to a predefined directory and using the values of a text field in the file name.
    The script is placed in an exit event on a field using javascript as follows:
    this.saveAs("/c/forms/Template/Leave Application "  + Applicants_Name.rawValue".pdf");
    The script does not work.
    Can any one please provide some assistance with correcting my script?
    Any help will be most appreciated.

    This solution is misleading....
    Of course this works only if you plan to load Trusted script on each machine you plan to use that form. In other words you can not rollout form to entire organization with out loading trusted function in each targeted machine.
    Also there are other limitations... like if for some reason user reinstalls Acrobat x or Reader x or upgrade to latest version they need to remember to redeploy the trusted function to the required location.

  • Podcasts broken in 9.2 with error "A duplicate file name was specified"

    Ever since the 9.2 upgrade my podcasts have not been able to update. The following error message is displayed when I click the icon next to the podcast:
    +There was a problem downloading "... podcast name ...". A duplicate file name was specified.+
    Digging in the iTunes download directory I see that a directory entry is created for each podcast (with a .tmp suffix). Inside there is a download.mp3 that is zero bytes in size.
    I've tried reorganizing the library, restarting, reinstalling, etc.
    Not sure if this matters, but I've been mounting my itunes library via nfs for the past five years or so without any issue.
    I tried to see what iTunes was up to via dtrace/iosnoop but it appears that they've gone and restricted that at the OS level -- so no luck there. Any luck here?

    Close iTunes, delete the download directory, and restart.

  • Rename files and move them into new folders with part of original file name

    I have tried using automator and other programs such as name Name Mangler with no luck.
    I am trying to have an AppleScript run when files are added to a folder, using a service through Automator.
    File names come in 9 different suffixes, all with the same prefix.
    Example:
    nonspecificprefixSUFFIX
    nonspecificprefixOTHERSUFFIX
    nonspecificprefixALSOSUFFIX
    I am trying to get the program to create a folder named after the prefix, then to remove the prefix from the files after moving them into this folder.
    There are 9 different suffixes that should remained unchanged.
    End goal would be to have child folders named nonspecificprefix, nonspecificprefix2 etc each with 9 files only containing the suffix portion of original name.
    If anyone has any tips to get me on the right path that would be much appreciated! I have thousands of files to rename and move so this would save me loads of time!

    Erwin,
    I was not able to systematically examine this issue, because it occurred on a production system and, of course, I uninstalled the Adobe iFilters as soon as I read that they may delete pdf files. Before the uninstallation I noticed the AR9 folders appearing on c:\ and moved them from time to time to another folder. Using the search function inside this folder, I found that all files were present in duplicate at least. I concluded, that after moving the AR9 folders they were recreated containing the same files. Consequently, these files cannot have been deleted. Searching for the origin of these files I found that they were part of pdf portfolios, therefore my conclusion that they are part of the indexing mechanism of the portfolios. What I have not done (and what I am not going to do since it is a production system) is to fill a folder with pdfs and track what is happening to the files.
    In case of my server, I think that the iFilters did not delete any files. Of course I cannot say what happens on other systems. I am definitely not going to reinstall the iFilters before knowing what they a really doing to the files.
    Not sure if this is of much help

  • Problem loading Image data with French accent in file name

    We have a very complex commercial application that has been working perfectly in English for over a year. We have now localized it to French and Spanish, and discovered a serious show-stopping problem. We need help fast, with the scheduled release being less than 2 weeks away...!
    We iterate over a folder to find all the images in it, then display those in a user window.  The code for loading the images is:
                for each (var name:String in filenames){
                    var image:SmoothImageTransformable = new SmoothImageTransformable();
                    var imagePath:String = dir + "/" + name;
                    image.source = imagePath;
                    trace("Adding Item to picture carousel with url " + image.source);
                    image.data = {directory:dir, filename:name};
                    image.isDragEnabled = true;
                    image.setStyle("horizontalCenter", 0);
                    image.setStyle("verticalCenter", 0);
                    _images.push(image);
    Our SmoothImageTransformable class is an internal class that inherits from Image.  This all works fine for image names like 'myFavoritePhoto', 'test', 'photo346', etc.  However, it fails to load the data if the file name is something like 'caméra'  Any name with a UTF-8 character causes the data load to fail.
    To be sure we weren't doing a load somewhere else in the code that I had overlooked, I added a "image.autoLoad = false' line in there.  That did exactly as expected -- all image squares then show a grey blank, with no image shown.  Removing that line (reverting to the original code, as shown above) causes all the images to work perfectly, except for those with French accent characters like the é.
    HELP!  Is this a known bug?  Is there some additional setting I need to make it understand the extended character set?  I can't find any mention about this at all in the documentation.

    @markerline:
    We have a fix!  Almost...   I don't understand one aspect of what I am seeing though.
    We have one test file named "camèra.jpg" that is an example of what I am unable to load into an Image.  I decided to examine the character codes at each letter, and this is what Flex has as the string:
    name = cam?ra.jpg
       [0] = c; 0x99
       [1] = a; 0x97
       [2] = m; 0x109
       [3] = ?; 0x232
       [4] = r; 0x114
       [5] = a; 0x97
       [6] = .; 0x46
       [7] = j; 0x106
       [8] = p; 0x112
       [9] = g; 0x103
    Note that the è prints as gibberish in the trace statement, and shows a numeric encoding of 0x232.  According to
         http://docstore.mik.ua/orelly/web2/action/appb_01.htm
    The unicode equivalent of Latin1 for è is 0xE8, which is equivalent to 0x232. That implies that the string is already Latin1, which I would think would mean that Windoze would recognize the file name and open it properly -- but it does not.
    I then tried taking the "camèra.jpg" string, pasting it into NotePad++ in a UTF8 document, then telling NotePad++ to display as ASCII.  The result is "camèra".  I then tried just forcing the file name within Flex to this new mangled string.  The result then is:
    MAGIC name = camèra
       [0] = c; 0x99
       [1] = a; 0x97
       [2] = m; 0x109
       [3] = ?; 0x195
       [4] = ?; 0x168
       [5] = r; 0x114
       [6] = a; 0x97
       [7] = .; 0x46
       [8] = j; 0x106
       [9] = p; 0x112
      [10] = g; 0x103
    Note this time the trace statement looks proper.  More important, the IMAGE DOES LOAD!  (Our display of the name to the user now looks like crap, but that just means I need to modify our class to have a separate 'name' property, rather than extracting it from the 'image.source')
    So... my remaining question -- what encoding did I just do through that NotePad++ incantation?  That site I quoted above said that it was already Latin1, which is what I thought I was trying to get to.  I clearly need to write a method to map from incoming (UTF8 I thought, but maybe Latin1?) to Windows file system (Latin1 I thought, but maybe ASCII).
    In other words, I am not sure what charcter set to come from or go to...  It turns out the code was already in the character set I had been trying to go to (which is why it wasn't working) and the set I seem to need to go to is not the one I thought...

    When starting up iTunes (version 10.6.1) I get an error message:
    Duplicate file name was specified.
    Needless to say, no clue as to what file name it is referring to. Furthermore, there are 5 songs which I can not play, bought from the iTiunes store. Contacted the iTunes store - they "enabled" the download for those 5 songs. When I connect to the iTunes store, login and check for downloads etc. I get the error message:

    The way to fix this is
    1. Go to Computer
    2. Click Operating System Hard-Drive (C:)
    3. Scroll to Program Files (or) Program Files (x86)
    4. Scroll to iTunes, open it
    5. Find iTunes.exe
    6. Right Click and go to Properties
    7. Click Compatibility you will see something that stats

    Run this program as an administrator.
    8. Click this and Click Apply and then Ok NOW Open iTunes

  • Using Mac OS, Firefox 3.6 will not save nor open html files with spaces in the file name. Will version 4.0 do this?

    I have hundreds of saved files with names that have spaces in them (like movie 10 41.html). I could not use Firefox 3.6 because it would not open these files for viewing and had to reinstall Firefox 3.5.8 which I have now. If I install Firefox 4.o, will I have the same problem? I use Mac OS 10.5

    I have Firefox 3.6.6, and now that Firefox 4.0 is available, it crashes constantly. Sometimes less than 5 minutes after I open it. I have a Mac 10.4.11, so Firefox 4.0 isn't an option for me. When I asked Ff to check my plug-ins it said there was an error and to check back later. Twice.
    Because I didn't have any (any) problems with my Ff before the upgrade became available, I am forced to question if Ff has done something to make the earlier version crash so you'll upgrade, but I can't afford to upgrade my Mac right now.
    In the meantime, I do need a browser that works! I dislike Safari, Chrome is also not available on Mac 10.4.11, and Explorer is just plain not available on Mac.
    Do you have any suggestions on how to fix my Firefox 3.6.6?
