Backing up your Mac advice

I've had my Mac for awhile and I have an external hdd.  I'm currently backing up everything by hand.  Everything being a documents folder with not too much in it, my photos from iPhoto which are really important to me, and some videos.  The reason I have been doing it by hand is because I never formatted my ext-hdd in the format Time Machine wants.  Is Time Machine the best option for just a few folders?  If my computer broke and I had to start a new computer, I probably would do a clean install anyway, but just want a few folders worth of stuff.  Is Time Machine what I want to use here?  Thanks.

If you decide to use a cloning program, here are some options:
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner
Clone – Data Backup
Clone – Deja Vu
Clone  - SuperDuper
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

  • How do you add previous mac events on your iPhone back onto your mac?

I added all my videos and photos to my iphone from my mac awhile ago as i needed to reset my mac and i wasn't confident using any other method. I reset my mac etc and everything is perfect. but now i want to put my photos and videos back onto iphoto from my iphone but when i plug my phone in to the mac it doesn't recognize any of the older events and only lets me import photos from my camera roll. i can view all my mac events/photos/videos/faces on my iphone so i know they are there. i just want them back in iphoto on the mac so i can free up space on my iphone any help would be awesome thank you.

You can use iPhoto lo import photos and video to your iPhone to your Mac.
iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
If you have problems importing to iPhone, try using Image Capture mentioned in the link above. Image Capture is located in your Applications folder.

  • How to disable iCloud for iCal and move events back to your Mac?

How can I disable iCloud and move my iCal events back to my Mac? I no longer want to store my private calendars in iCloud and want them back on my Mac but I don't know how to do it! Does anyone know what to do? Thanks

To move your calendars, follow the second set of numbered instructions here:

Then you can sign out of iCloud in System Preferences>iCloud.

  • How to back up your mac with dvd-sharing?

i have a mac mini fall 2012 so i havent got any dvd drive, but my mac has it, i can dvd share, at least it says it can, but i cant see the empty disc that i want to make my backup on, i do not know how to back up my mac when i dont have a external dvd drive for my mac mini, and dont have a external harddisc.
pleas help me explain how to do it.
    mikkel

    Hello Mikel,
As far as I know CD/DVD Sharing is Read Only, you can't write to it remotely.
Also, DVDs for backup is not very good for most things, a cheap USB Hard Drive would be far better/faster.
You could, if need be, make Disk Images of what you want to backup on the Mini, then move the files to the other Mac for burning.

  • Backing up your mac to external drive and how to access individual files

I have managed to back up the information on my computer to a external drive as a whole but need to access different files, projects so that i can then delete them from my computer to save space. how do I access the different files on my external drive???

You CAN access the backed up file from a time machine backup. Just attach the external drive you used for time machine backups to your notebook and then Start Time machine (First under preference - slide the switch to "off" so it does not start an automatic backup right then) Once you open the backup files in Time Machine on your Notebook you can navigate back to older backups to get to that file. (Even if you've deleted it on your notebook after having backed up that file)
NOW - I would recommend having another back up, like the other poster, before you delete the file from your notebook. Redundancy is a good thing. The way time machine works is that over time as your external drive begins to fill it will delete the oldest backup(s) and you could potentially loose that file forever.
I have two other back ups - I have a Super Duper (exact) cloned version of my MBP on a second ext. hard drive. Now, this would not work for you since you want to delete that file from your MBP. Since it is an exact copy if you delete that file from your notebook and then go back to do a back up with Super Duper it would delete that file on the cloned version on your ext. hard drive (too keep them exactly the same). There may be other settings to avoid this, but I generally just use it as a clone. I also have a 3rd mobile hard drive where I set up folders for files I want to keep forever and just drag and drop those onto this drive.
You can cut down on having too many ext. drives if they have a big enough capacity by partitioning them in Disk Utility. (i.e one big drive with a partition for Super Duper and another for standard backups)
    Hope that helps a bit.
    Thanks.

  • How do I get contacts from iCloud back on my mac?

How I got to this place is too long a story, but I ended up with a system iCloud dialogue box on my macbook pro, and the gist of the questions were Do you want to make it so if I quit iCloud my contacts (Notes, Reminders, etc) will no longer remain on your mac? I didn't want to do this, but it seemed it wasn't letting me proceed without hitting the highlighted agree button, so I did.
I definitely want my contacts back on my Mac. How can I go about getting them from iCloud back onto my mac? I don't intend to quit iCloud, but I have years worth of contacts that I don't want to ever lose.
Notes would be the next most important one to get back onto my mac. Reminders after that. Thanks much in advance for your help.
    Michael

    Hi Michael Gorsline1,
I understand that you turned off iCloud on your Mac and subsequently lost all of your contacts, notes, and reminders. If your information, remains on iCloud.com, you can merge that information back onto your Mac by signing back into iCloud and selecting the services you would like to sync.

  • Is there any way i can back up my mac with itunes?

im not really a big fanof icloud so i was wondering if theres any way of backing my mac up using itunes.

iTunes is not a backup application, it only backs up iOS devices as a part of it's sync features.
Time Machine is the tool Apple make for backing up to a local hard disk or Time Capsule.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
You can also make your own copies onto other hard disks via apps like Carbon Copy Cloner
    http://bombich.com/
Your options basically depend on what hard disks you have available & how much data you have to backup.

  • Can I use iphoto on ipad app and synch changes back to my mac?

can I use iphoto on ipad app and synch changes back to my mac?

No, changes done on the iPad will not sync back to iPhoto on your mac.
But you can transfer the edited photos back to your mac - share them to the camera role or send them by mail. Any edited image you add to the camera roll can be imported into your iPhoto Library, when you connect your iPad to yourmac via USB.
But there is no real syncing of iPhoto libraries on your mac and IOS devices.

  • Transferring your ipod to your mac

I just got a new mac, and now I have songs on my ipod that are not on my computer. Is there a way I can transfer songs from my ipod to my mac?

Search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your Mac.

  • Boot Camp "back up your disk before partitioning"

what does it mean when it says "Back up your disk before partitioning it or instaling windows."?  what does it have to back up?

Everything you did on your Mac is what it means, email you received, pictures you took, letters you wrote, OSX itself.
Back Up your Mac (if you don't back up you are on the way to losing your stuff anyway)
But if your stuff does not matter to you, don't back up.

  • I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to My Mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services.   Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again." How do I fix this?

Not sure if I am doing this right. This is my first time in the support community.
I imagine what I put in my heading was supposed to go in here.
I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to my mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services. Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again. See the documentation that came with your device for information about turning off network services"
Does anyone know how I do this? I contacted my ISP (Telus in Canada) and they did not know anything (not that they usually do).

Why do ISPs insist upon making things so difficult for their customers?
If you cannot get them to understand that you would prefer to use your own router over their piece of cheap junk, perhaps the information in the following will be useful:
    http://keithbalomben.wordpress.com/2012/03/29/telus-actiontec-v1000h-hacks-and-i nformation/
    Scroll down to DHCP Settings
You will need to log in with proper "technician" credentials. They are provided in the above link as
    Username: tech
    Password: t3lu5tv
... but these may or may not work. Try it, and if you cannot get anywhere at least now you know what to ask Telus to do in return for your business.

  • "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".

Hi, i am trying to setup back to my mac at home but I get the error "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".
There is no documentation on how to solve this anywhere.
I have an Arris router set to bridged mode which is connected to a 5th generation airport extreme. I have tried using the google dns servers instead of the one assigned by the cable company in the AE but I still get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated

New to BTMM, I got stung today with the silly DNS problem message. Solution:
    1) Flush DNS cache with:
    dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
2)System preferences > iCloud > untick BTMM then tick it again. The warning should have disappeared.
    Edit #1
Apologies for the noise. The warning has come back
    Edit #2
Just found out that BTMM is not compatible with double NAT. That's not helpful.
