Backing up Zenworks

We use zenworks desktop managment 7.x, and backup exec 10d on a windows media server. I cannot issue start/stop commands in job properties for netware servers on a windows media server. So I have to come up with another way to shut down the database outside of the backup exec software.
Just wondering what the best way is? I'd like something that is tied to the backup job so that it always fires of when the job runs and if the I run the job later (or someone else has to run it manually) they don't have to fumble through some other things or have to gain access to the server to shut down the database. I realize this probably isn't a possiblity. I have open file option but that isn't a substitue for shutting down the database - right?. A cron job would work, but then again, its not tied to the job.
Would the backup process in c1 be a solution - use cron at a given time each day, and then exclude the actual databases from the backup exec selection list, but include the backup directory made by the backup process?
We also have stuffkey running on the server - not sure how this weighs against cron jobs. I guess neither are can be tied directly to a backup job.

  • ZENworks 11.2.4 no icons after explorer.exe crash

We are on Windows 7 SP1, ZENworks 11.2.4.32791 After an explorer.exe crash, icons go away.
ZENworks Windows Service running, Adaptive agent still logged in and part of the zone as normal.
zac ref and zac ref bypasscache run and still no icons. I also could logoff the zenworks agent and log back in, do a zac ref, do a zac ref bypasscache--still no icons.
Also, able to confirm that the bundles do show up when looking at Properties in the Zenworks Adaptive Agent. I can look at their properties and looks normal. Just no desktop icons.
We don't run NalWin but I was able to launch it and icons show up in the Nal Zenworks Window, so it is a Windows Redirection issue possibly?
We are using Folder Redirection in Win 7. As expected, no nal icons showing in the redirected folder when the desktop icons disappear. So everything appears normal. I am able to replicate the issue by stopping explorer.exe and restarting it. Other Windows shortcuts come back, but Zenworks icons do not.

    Same........
Lots of stuff but never only after an explorer.exe crash/restart.

It's probably far too late, but here's the solution. There's a bug in the
6.5 installer that looks AS in the Red Hat Release file
(/etc/redhat-release). Change the file to read AS temporarily and run the
installer again. It will work. Honest! Just don't forget to change it back
    once ZENWorks is installed.

  • DR Test / Prep for Upgrade

Before going to ZCM11.1 I figured I would take the time to test DR our ZCM10.3a environment, then test an upgrade to 11.1. However I have expereinced an issue with bundles not being delivered from the server.
    Our LIVE environment
    External OEM sybase database
2 Primaries for content and roles All content uploaded to the content-repo
    1 Primary for Reporting
For DR testing, I figured I could get away with
    External Database and 1 primary.
Built a test lab with same IP addressing DNS resolution.
Backed up database and 1st ZCM primary server. Certificate backup, zenserver-backup
    Built the database
    Built the primary server
    Ran zenserver-restore
    Ran CAE import
    Copied the database live
    Copied content-repo live
Reset all services on database and ZCM primary
Verified rules that the only server with conent, auhentication role is this ZCM server.
Registered a new client content that requires a registry key or launch command works. All content that requires downloading fails, saying unable to contact the zenworks server, when I look in the logs I see it mentioning the zc file it want to download. I get a bad entry, If I review the location on the server its there. But the URL doesn't work.
Anyone expereinced similar issues, maybe a step I've missed. I'm reluctant to patch the server to ZCM11.1 until this issue is resolved.
    Steve

I forgot the most basic thing, when restoring the content remember to reset the file ownership back to zenworks:zenworks.
chown -R zenworks:zenworks path to content.

  • Empty ZENworks Window(NAL) upon login-April 2013 follow-up

I know this is from an older post back on April 9, 2013, but I am still experiencing the same issue. I have troubleshooted this to no end since then, but have not come up with a solution yet. Since the original post, I have upgraded my ZENworks servers to 11.2.3a and have done the same on my clients. Sometimes the only solution I can find is to uninstall and re-install the ZENworks agent. I can't seem to find what is causing this as the issue is sporadic and not occurring everywhere.
Any ideas? I have copied the original post below.
    Thanks.
    Scott
There is a cache corruption issue that I am also experiencing that I believe
MU2 and now 3a resolves. I have had to do exactly what you are doing.
waiting for the early adapters to shake out the current SP before I install.

I am having periodic issues in which users report that the ZENworks
Application Window is empty upon login. The bundles are shortcuts to run
..exe files that are installed on the workstations, web url shortcuts,
shortcuts to run .exe files on a network server. These bundles will not
show up when there are or are not requirements for the bundle and does
not depend on the user that logs in. I have the shortcut for the
ZENworks Application Window in the "Startup" folder for all user in
    WinXP and in the c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\start
    menu\programs\startup .
What I have found that works to get the applications to re-appear for
the users is to re-register the computer with - zac reg -g
    https://servername .
    The particulars:
    ZENworks version-11 sp2
    ZENworks servers - four(4) primary servers; Windows 2008R2 sp1
    ZENworks database - Windows 2008R2 sp1; SQL 2008R2 sp2
workstation OS - Windows 7 or WindowsXP
    Windows 2008R2 AD domain
Any thoughts on why this happens?
    Thank you.

This sounds like it could be the problem we had with earlier ZCM
versions that the local db cache would get corrupt in the ZEN agent,
causing the machine to appear as if it's unmanaged. To help identify
if you might still be experiencing this, the next time this happens
would you do a zac cc followed by a zac ref on the machine and see if
    the bundles come back?

  • Upgraded ZENworks Primary Server Will Not Refresh

    Good Afternoon,
I recently upgraded our primary server from ZENworks 11.2-11.3a.
The upgrade procedure completed with no errors. However, the server will not refresh it's status in the ZENworks Control Center. Control Center continues to report the server as 11.2.0.0. The UI of the Control Center is upgraded. The agent continues to push back the next contact with server time without updating the last contact with server time
    Things I have tried:
-doing a manual refresh through control center gives a "Connection Failed" error
-doing a manual refresh with zac ref completes successfully but does not update anything
-cleared the agent cache using zac cc
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Getting back to NW.

    Hello to all,
For the past few years I have been away from administering NW.. The
last time I was responsible for NW, it was NW 5.1 with no Zen.. So I am
now just getting back to administering a NW 6.5, which has zen included..
Here is what I would like to accomplish in the next little while..
Place of work is public education.
    Current infrastructure:
    Server = NW 6.5
    PC = Windowsw XP SP2
    Network = 100M switched
Security on student PC's = Bought product (Deep freeze).
How can Zenworks help me to accomplish the following?
#Imaging (this is setup, but I would like to know more)
#Security - so that we are not buying (Deep Freeze) - Can Zenworks
secure the XP PC's from the students, Deep Freeze does cost a lot of $$
#Ease of use - DLU so Windows XP does not prompt for 2nd passwrod etc.
Can someone point me in the right direction for these actions, it would
be great if there are any real life examples of similar situations and
    accomplishments.
    Thanks for you help

  • ZENworks Imaging & Image Safe Data Problems

    Hi All,
I'm in the preparation stage of a Windows 7 rollout to 4000 desktops. So far we've packaged up 200 applications/bundles and tested them against our image, everything on that front is fine.
Our new ZENworks 11.3.2 server is being now being used to deploy our old Windows XP images (created in ZfD7), I'm using hardware rules to do this and it's working perfectly.
When I use the hardware rules to deploy our new Windows 7 Image it will image once as expected. The PC then boots, a powershell script will build the hostname from the model and serial number, join the domain, install the ZCM agent and all looks good.
The problem comes later when I try to image the machines again, we get "no work to do". After some reading I assume this is because of the Image Safe Data.
I've tried a things so far but seem to be getting inconsistent results, basically each time I PXE the machine I want the machine to use the hardware rule to pull down the image.
The only way I have found that seems to work,is to clear the Image Safe Data and delete the "Novell ZENworks Image-Safe Data Service" after the agent has been installed (as part of my build script). This seems like overkill to me and I'm sure I'm missing something. Help!
Any help/guidance would be much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Carl

Often the just use the ZCC to tell the device to Apply the Assigned Image and then upon reboot it will just apply the image.
Some often script this with WOL so that every morning at 3am all of their lab devices will re-image.
Also you don't want to "Delete" the ZISD Service, it is better to configure the Default ZCM Agent Settings to install that service if you do not want it.
    Otherwise, it will come back.
You may also be able to make configure the ZCM Imaging Menu to Always show when PXE Booting.
Then you could manually select an image to restore, regardless of the state of the ZENworks Image Safe Data.

It seems to be working the way we want now, although I'm still not entirely happy with the changes we've had to make...
Added C:\Program Files\Novell\ZENworks\bin\preboot\ZISWIN.EXE -WIPE to the HKLM\..\Run registry key.
Deleted the "Novell ZENworks Image-Safe Data Service" service.
I'm not sure how this will effect client machines in the future when we update the Agent.
When other customers reimage a machine which is already registered in ZENworks, do they push out images from the console?

  • Zenwork 7 app to backup file normal.dot to network drive

I'm attempting to build a simple zenwork app that backs up the file normal.dot from C:\Documents and Settings\NWUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

I have succussfully copied other files to the same network drive but for some reason the normal.dot will not copy

    A) the file is not zero bits and

  • Zenworks 7 Agent Upgrade Breaks Windows XP User Profiles

We have been having an intermittent problem since upgrading from the
Zenworks 4 agent to Zenworks 7 on our XP desktops. Users have been
reporting that their profiles are not loading on login and the error
    message appears:
"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator."
Examination of the event log yields the following errors in this order:
    Event ID 1508:
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by
insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.
    Event ID 1502:
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
    Event ID 1515:
Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try
to use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.
    Event ID: 1511:
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a
temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you
    log off.
    Event ID 1517:
Windows saved user <user name> registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it
is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user
account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService
    or NetworkService account.
Our systems are running Windows XP SP2 with the latest patches and Novell
Client 4.90 SP2. We did not encounter this problem when we were using
the Zenworks 4 agent. The only recent change we have made to the
environment is the upgrade to Zenworks 7. Therefore it appears that in
our case, the Zenworks 7 agent is the cause. The issue has not occurred
on every PC yet, however every day it seems that we get more and more
calls regarding this issue. Some users report that a reboot will fix the
problem while other users have seen a more persistent occurrence. For
the time being, we are installing UPHClean on the affected machines per
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;837115 However,
we need more testing to see if this will actually resolve the problem.
Furthermore, our objective is to determine why this issue has presented
itself after the Zenworks upgrade and what we can do from the Novell
perspective to fix it. Is there a possibility that Zenworks 7 agent is
not allowing these profiles to open? Could the upgrade to Zenworks 7
negatively impacted user profiles on these systems?
We performed the upgrade on a number of test systems without issue. We
pushed the Zenworks 7 MSI via a NAL object. The MSI essentially removed
Zenworks 4 and installed version 7.
Any help with this issue is appreciated.
    Thanks.

There is a good chance that UPHClean will resolve your issue.
The main issue is that most likely the profiles are not fully unloading
correctly and causing the reload to not work correctly.
The cause for the profiles sticking open are many and sort of why MS has
    created the tool.
If the tool does not help, we can try and troubleshoot more.

  • Beginner's Zenworks - disable status

here's a very rudimentary question for someone just starting out with
    Zenworks.
What does the "disable" status do for policy parameters?
I understand the concept of "ignore." I am not sure how "disable" differs
    from "ignore."
    thanks in advance

    Thanks, very clear.
Just one more question though - does this mean that "disable" status rolls
back the setting in the registry to some local setting prior to the ZEN
    policy taking effect?

  • Back to NW.

    Hello to all,
I am getting back to administering NW, been away from the technical
side for a while, so really getting back to technical in general.
When I left about 4 years ago, I was administering NW 5.1 with no Zen
capabilities.. I have taken a job with the public school sector, they are
running NW 6.5 with ZEN active (I guess it comes with NW 6.5)..
Here is the current setup, and questions that I have.
#Currently using Zen imaging. Works but flakey
    #Switched LAN 100MB CAT 5E ethernet.
#Windows XP Pro - Using security software on students PC's (Deep
    Freeze.;
    Questions:
I would like to learn how to use ZEN works to my advantage, so here
are some of the items that I would like to do:
#Being in a school environment, I would like to see what it can do for
    us:
Security - Can we get rid of (eep freeze) Can Zenworks secure the PC's
    from the students?
What other ZEN tools would benifit us in a school environment? If I
can reduce administration, reduce costs for purchasing software etc, how
can this be accomplished.. If there are any real life examples out there,
can you please share with me?
    Thanks for your help
    Toby

Wow. That's amazing pricing. We are not-for-profit and still pay much more for our GW, eDir, Zen licenses. In fact I have tasked our account rep to tell me why I should be paying double for Zen licenses what SMS costs. My management wants to know as well. Sorry, off topic I know.

They are separate products, but NetWare (OES), GroupWIse, and ZENworks
for Desktops are a normal SLA package priced at $2 per student. You
can add other options for various pricing usually around $.50/student.
    > #Currently using Zen imaging. Works but flakey
    k, what is flakey?

Not necessarily. I have multiple school districts that use both these
products. ZEN can help with the local user account, reimaging a PC
that is messed up, push out applications and more. Deep Freeze and
other similar products allow the user full access to the PC including
formatting C: and all it takes is a reboot and all is back.

With the districts I cover they separate the PCs into 2 groups. 1 the
students access, 1 for the staff.
Normally the students machines are locked with Deep Freeze so
    management is less necessary.
For the staff machines the districts I have like ZPM, Zen Patch
Management. This allows you to control the Windows and application
patches by having a single server download them and you push them out
from there. It is prices at $.50/student
I have other districts that are using Zen Inventory Manager (free with
ZDM). It is a very nice inventory management server. One school has
the full ZEN Asset Management package. This adds quite a few license
management features. IIRC price runs $1.75/student or close.
You also might want to take a look at the Zen Configuration Management
product. There are 3 flavors one might be just what you want.

  • Zenworks 6.x imaging - Dell Laptop D630

We are trying to setup a new image for the new Dell Latitude D630 laptops.
Problem is when we try to run the imaging program to get it started we get
kicked out immediately back to the prompt.
The last time we saw a similar issue to this was when we were imaging the
Dell Optiplex GX745's. We had to change the SATA drive type to Legacy and
Novell had to do some re-coding of our Zenworks software to make it work.
I am wondering if this is a known issue with Zen 6.5 and if an upgrade to
Zen 7.0 can fix it or if it can be taken care off without upgrading. Thanks

    Hi Everybody,
we have got the same situation here. I managed to add the newsid option to my PXE environment and it works fine now.
My problem now is, that the harddisk is not recognized by Zenworks 6.5SP2 IR1. I guess its because of the new Intel chipset (Santa Rosa platform).
Do you have an idea how to get this working ?
    Best regards

  • ZENworks Imaging Loop

Sorry for posting again, but here is some more information, as well as some extra things we have tried.
    Hi,
The screen results with this exit code after the workstation has been imaged, prior to booting back into PXE and then re-imaging, along with completion and the same message.
    ================================================== ==================
    Novell ZENworks Imaging Engine v10.2.0.0

Novell ZENworks SID changer for linux
    Version 10.2.0.0 Copyright 2007 - 2009
Exiting: Computer has not been recently imaged
    ================================================== ==================
The above message occurs (and this happens to other Laptops & PCs) after the machine has been imaged, but we are still having the computer re-imaging itself, it is in a constant loop.
We were running Zenworks 7SP1 IR4. Last week we loaded Zenworks 7SP1 SR4.
My manager has rolled back to IR4, but no change, as we have computers constantly re-imaging over and over in a loop.
I have tried deleting the workstation object (name) from within ConsoleOne, and still the problem occurs. I have also made sure there are no add-on images attached to the imaging.
    Notes:
Now, whenever we image a PC, the imaging process appears to finish, but we get an error: "Zenworks Imaging failed with Error:52"
The system then reboots and starts the process again. If you look at the workstation properties, the Zenworks Image tickbox has not cleared, and hence the restart of the imaging.
I found that Zenworks error 52 is: "52 - No partition type given when asked to create a part". I don't know why it would be saying that. (It is also possible that this message has always been there, but we have never noticed it, as the process has always worked).
I came across an article that suggests the "ZENworks agent on the workstation has to be the same version as the ZENworks snap-ins in ConsoleOne".
    We are using:
    ConsoleOne Version 1.3.6h
ZENworks Desktop Management 7.0.1 = snap-ins for configuring policy settings
ZENworks Desktop Management 7.0.1 = snap-ins for administering and managing software distributions
If you have any ideas could you please let us know?

  • ZENworks Database and Primary Servers / Scheduled Reboot

    Hi all,
I hope I got the correct forum for my questions. If not could an admin be so good to move me to the correct one?
We've got a ZENworks 11.3.1 Zone with 4 Primary Severs (SLES 11SP3) and up to 25 Satellites (mixed OS). The Databases are on MS SQL.
Some times we get very strange behaviour of bundles, policies and ZCC is slow. After taking the Databases down and reboot the four primaries the zone is working fine again for a time.
My question is: Do you reboot your Zone daily/weekly? I did'nt find any recommendations in the documentation.
Thanks in advance for letting me know how you handle this.
    Kind regards
    Sebastian

    Hey
Zpm in place? Thats a large DB, I see 9GB with 2700 devices on sql.
    This from the docs:
    Check database integrity
    Shrink database
    Reorganize index
    Rebuild index
    Update statistics
    Back up database
Do you do any of the above? You could give it a try?
    Nops
