BackingUp External iTunes Library?

To allocate more space on the my local drive I migrated my iTunes library to and external firewire drive. My question is HOW can I back-up the external iTunes library using TM to another 3TB drive dedicated for backups? Or is not possible and I have to use 3rd party backup application?

I've tried that and option, but TM does not back it up So I've been using a folder sync option, but I would rather have TM manage the back-up. Let me try posting this on the TM forum.
Thanks
Vijay

  • HT1751 Is it possible to use single external iTunes Library from multiple computers (my mac book, pc, mac mini)

    Hi,
I recently decided to maintain my itunes libraries distrubuted onto different computers. (such as mac mini, mac book, pc)
I am planning to consolidate one of my iTunes library, move it to external source and configure external hard drive to be used by my iTunes library permanently.
For this purpose, I bought 5big NAS pro network storage hardware. I completed all basic setup and now I need help on designing access methodology.
Question is : Does external iTunes library supports to be used by more than one iTunes application? if not what will be the closest solution to save storage and ease of library management?
    Thanks in advance

  • Transferring external iTune library from one computer to another

I am having great difficulty in changing my external iTunes library from my old MBP laptop to my new iMac 5k.
My entire iTunes library is stored on an external drive and can be accessed directly with my MBP. When I started up iTunes on my new iMac, it created a new empty library in the MUSIC folder. What I want to do is connect my new iMac to the external library directly. I can see it when I turn on HOME SHARING but only when iTunes is running on my MBP, which is useless since my MBP will now be seldom used. I have of course on the iMac, changed the library location in the advanced preferences to the external location, to no avail. I do not want to keep any media files on the iMac for capacity reasons.
To compound the problem, I cannot seem to sync my new iPhone 6+ to the original external library, only the new empty one!
Surely this ought to be a simple job, transferring an external iTunes library from one computer to another! Am I missing something obvious here?

Wow, what a quick response! Thanks, Limnos. I guess it was bleeding' obvious, and I should have thought of it before. Such a simple solution!
On a related matter, I also have just realised that the iTunes iOS backups are saved on the internal computer drive in a folder called MOBILESYNC rather than on an external drive, thus chewing up a lot of capacity on my SSD. Others reading this response may be interested to know that it is easy to have iTunes save the iOS backups to any external drive using a symbolic link in this directory. Go to

However, note that iBooks will NOT let you use this work-around, pathetic app that it is.

  • How do I point my new Mac at my external iTunes Library?

Okay it's not really a new Mac, it's a replaced hard drive in my old iMac, but I'm setting it up as new to keep it as trim as possible. Pre-replacement I had my iTunes Media library set up on an external hard drive; the iTunes folder and it's inhabitants (Extras, Genius, Library.itl, etc) all resided on the iMac in the Music folder, but I'd moved the Media over to the external drive.
    So...
What's the method for telling my 'new' copy of iTunes that I already have a media library, and it's 'over there' on the external drive? I know iTunes can be funny about this sort of thing so I don't want to get it wrong! I considered changing the location using the Preferences, but I wasn't sure if that was going to wipe out anything.
Also, given that I do have a complete backup of the original iMac drive (I just don't want to clone it back to the new one, junk and all), is there any way of doing this in such a way that I can preserve the playlists, play counts, etc? Can I copy over old preferences or library files? Not that bothered if I can't, but would be nice.

I think I just solved my own problem. I simply copied over the Library.itl file from my backup and replaced the same file that my fresh iTunes library had created. Opened iTunes, everything popped up

  • HT1751 Getting 2 logins on the same iMac to use an external iTunes library

The initial state is that we have two users on one iMac, each of which has (I think) it's own iTunes library.  The desired end state is to have one iTunes library on the external drive that both uses can access because all purchases are made using my Apple id regardless of which user we have displayed.  To gain hard drive space, I just transferred my iTunes library to an external Thunderbolt drive, and iTunes for my user login appears to be correctly configured and accessing everything. The library folder created during the transfer process is called "iTunes Media." However, when I tried to point my 15 year olds user id on the same iMac to this same external library, all of the library content in her iTunes disappeared. The iTunes folder is there, but there are no subfolders or content inside it. When I try to change libraries on my daughter's id, iTunes won't let me select the iTunes media folder on the external drive because neither it nor any subordinate folders have the .itl or .xml extensions. I am a novice with Apple products and don't know what happened to the missing iTunes folders associated with my daughter's user id. The ideal situation is if I could find the library and merge the content with the new one on the external drive.  If there is no other way, we may have try to recreate her content and add it again. I need help getting both logins using the same external iTunes media/library folder and, if possible, recovering the missing content. Please put your advice in layman's terms for those who are somewhat technically impaired.  Thanks!!

Also, you will no longer be able to sync contacts and calendar via USB with Mavericks. You can only do that now with iCloud.

  • External itunes library setup format-usb vs firewire

I was wondering what would be the best external setup for my itunes library.  I have a 1.5TB usb 2.0 drive and a 2.0TB firewire 800 drive setup in a raid 0 format.  Would it be better to set it up with the firewire drive by itself?  I am trying to find the fastest setup possible.

raid0 don't make any sense at all
if just 1 of the harddisks die all data is lost
and both usb2 and firewire800 will be slower then the harddisks so
the speed inc the raid0 gives will not be noticed by you because
the Interface is slowing you down

  • External iTunes Library

i have my itunes library on an external drive when i disconnect the drive, iTunes sets the library back to my internal hard drive, and then it says that it can't find any of my songs (which it shouldn't be able to) but then when i plug the drive back in, it still doesn't locate the songs, because iTunes set its library back to my internal drive
How can i make that not happen anymore?

    Samantha
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iTunes. Select 'Choose Library' and point it at the library on the external disk.

  • How do I point iTunes on a New Mac Mini to an External iTunes Library

I have a 90 Gb (7000 tracks) iTunes Library sitting on a network drive that I want to "relocate" from my Powerbook to my new Intel Mac Mini. Or rather I want to point iTunes on the new Mac Mini to the existing Library.
How can I achive this and still retain all my ratings and other track info (ie count)?
    Graham J

To move your songs from the network drive to the Mac Mini, add them to the iTunes on the Mac Mini, make sure that in Edit > Preferences > Advanced the default location is on the Mac Mini. Finally click Advanced > Consolidate Library. This will move the files to your Mac Mini.
On the other hand, if you want to point iTunes on the Mac Mini to the network drive, change the setting in the above preference location.

  • Send file to external itunes library

    Hi,
I am running compressor 4 on my local iMac. After compressor generates the file in AppleTV format, I want to send the result to my main itunes library, which is NOT on my iMac but on a Mac mini in my local network.
How can I tell compressor not to use the local iMac itunes library but the one one my Mac mini?
    Thanks for your help
    Taz

Russ, I think the OP wants to add these videos to a playlist or to a playlist folder instead of the (Home) Video folder.  (Below is what is in the iTunes (media) folder.)
I would think you would need a script to write to the iTunes Music Library.xml. And you may need a script to write to those other files too.
As Russ mention you can navigate to the iTunes Home Video folder for the final destination for the video. I don't think you can put those videos into a playlist or playlist folder without a script. I sure if the script isn't written correctly you can mess up your iTunes library. (Personally I don't think a script can be written to do this...)

  • Can't access external itunes library after 10.4.1 update

I just updated to iTunes 10.4.1 and now when I open iTunes with "option" in order to choose the library stored on my external hard disk I am not able to choose it. It appears in the list but is greyed out. I have a HUGE library (83GB). HELP. How do I now access this library?

problem solved. Now when choosing the library you need to choose the folder it's in - not the file itself.
Hey Apple, you really should document these changes!

  • I have my iTunes library on external drive and can access from any PC. However I cannot access from new MacBokk Air.

My iTunes library is on an external drive and been using it on two PCs with no problem.
Now that I got a new MacBook Air I want to access the same iTunes library from the external drive and keep all the library and media on that external drive.
When I try to change to another iTunes library by hitting "option" with iTunes and select the library on the external hard drive I get the following message:
"The iTunes library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do noy have write permission for this file."
I have read many posts in which many suggest to go to the library or media file on the PC and right click to make sure the read only tab is not checked.
I uncheked the read only tab and gave full permission to all the iTunes files and folders.
The unusual part is that I can use this external drive on many PCs that I have tried with no problem at all.
I just select a different library, which is on my external hard drive and everything works, play lists and everything.
However, when I try it on a MAC i get the message stated above:
What can I do to be able to access my External iTunes library from new MacBook Air while keeping everything on the external drive like I can on PCs?
I am running latest version of iTunes and Mavericks.
    Please advise.

  • How do I add  movies or books to an external second itunes library?

I want to create an external itunes library.  I know I have to use opt. and restart itunes in the correct library.
After I create a new second library, how do I add content to that library?  Do I just have it on the same disc, or must it be in a
particular folder?  Don't know.  In my main itunes library, I just drag the movie into the open itunes window, and it puts my movie, or book
where it belongs.  Please Help.  I have moved all my movies and books off my main computer iMac, onto an external drive.
Thanks if you could give me detailed how to's.  I have the current itunes software on my iMac.
    Bev

Are you trying to start a second library just for the books and movies on the external drive?  If that's the case, create your library on the drive, then drag the books and movies to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder you will find in the iTunes folder that was just created for the new library on the external drive.  This will move the files to the correct locations within the new iTunes folder and add them to the new library.

  • Issues With iTunes Library On An External Drive

I'm attempting to use my external iTunes library across both Mac and Windows. My music library has been living on my Mac for awhile, and that's where I'm trying to move everything from. I started off by redirecting my music folder to the external drive (which is in Fat32 format) and then running the consolidation process to copy everything over. After that, I manually copied over the iTunes library files and then tested it out with an Option-button start to choose the library on the external. Everything seemed fine, until I plugged the drive into Windows, where the following things occurred:
    1) When running a Shift-button start to choose a library, I couldn't originally find the library file on the external because Windows was looking for a file with the extension itl, which the Mac had not included. I manually renamed the file, though, and it loaded up just fine.
    2) Things looked okay at first, until I started browsing through my library and discovered that a number of songs had exclamation points stating they could not be found. At first it seemed very random and when I checked the actual folders in Windows Explorer, the files were there. It took a few moments, but I finally noticed a common trend: They were all long song names, and thus long file names. As it turns out, at some point in the process, long file names were truncated, but the iTunes Library file is still pointing at the full filename. I haven't had a chance to go back and try the process again to see if I can figure out which step led to the truncation, but I suspect I'm not the only one this has happened to.
    Any ideas? Anyone? Bueller?

    Ok
I just upgraded to OS 10.5.5, and now it works ... however, I still don't know what the root cause was.

  • Help understanding shared iTunes library on external drive

Here is what I tried to accomplish:
merge two iTunes libraries (currently on two MacBooks) and store all music files on external drive, but keep each MacBook's custom playlists intact - the idea is to make space on each laptop.
I started comparing libraries on each laptop with the external iTunes library and copied missing media files/folders over to the external drive.
Question: is it save now to delete media folders from each laptop and just keep the library files in each laptops Music > iTunes folder?
Question 2: which folder do I select when changing to new iTunes Media folder in Preferences?
There is no iTunes Media folder on the external drive.
The folders Music, Movies, Podcast etc just reside in a folder called iTunes (which also holds some library files)

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, click on Choose Library, and navigate to that instance of the library.
