Backlight Bleed on W540 (3K IPS)

Hi all,
So far, I have been very pleased with my W540 in all aspects once I got everything the way I wanted it. However, there is some backlight bleed on the screen, and I'm not sure if this is normal or I should pursue a screen replacement through the warranty. I've also never had an IPS display, so maybe the bleed is more common with IPS than the TN panels I'm used to? I have attached a picture of the screen (it's a poor quality smartphone picture).
The place that bothers me is on the bottom bezel. There are also a few up toward the top right corner that don't really show through in the picture.

  • All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen.
I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default".
Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed?
I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault.
Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

  • X220 still suffers "Backlight Bleed" ?? How about the X230 ??

I have sent mine in for repair. It was leaking light from atleast 6 places on the bottom. It also recently had a white dot (not pixels, more like bleed) appear on the right side of the screen.
Any chance they will actually do something ? I am hearing that they just ship them back without even fixing anything.
Also, what is with all the "this is normal, its just you"....
The ipad 2 had the same backlight bleed issue and it was LG's fault.
Anyone who had the issue was able to get as many exchanges from an apple store until the problem was fixed.
Now I pad $1000 for this laptop, MUCH MORE than an iPad 2. Not to mention it has a LOWER RESOLUTION.
This light bleeding issue is unacceptable. Excuses are also unacceptable.
So someone please answer. Has Lenovo fixed this light bleed issue ???

White dots / blotchly spots have become a normal feature of modern laptop screens. I don't know anyone with a screen over a year old that doesn't have one or more of these, regardless of vendor. However, Lenovo has a decent track record of fixing them as long as you have the accidental damage protection. Without the adp, its possible it'll be classified as "user damage" or some such thing, and then you have to deal with that hassle to have it replaced.

  • X220 Many problems: backlight bleeding, fingerprint throttling, hot 65 watt adapter.

I am having 4 issues right now:
    -Backlight bleeding (lots of it)
-Fingerprint reader wont turn off when laptop is off. (im using UEFI, option in settings is missing)
    but mainly
-CPU THROTTLING even when in high performance mode
    -65W adapter gets VERY HOT
I called lenovo tech support. They make it sound like it's just me. They are also NOT willing to replace it with a 90W adapter.
I am very dissapointed and will likely be returning this unless someone from lenovo helps fix my issues...

Excessive backlight bleeding is a defect. Call Support and open a Case. Give them a chance to fix it. If they fail, then you can return it without a restocking fee. I don't experience this with my X220 or I would have returned it.
Fingerprint reader staying on is a feature, not a bug, a nice alternative to the two step process of power button and then swiping.
CPU throttling occurs because the 65W Adapter is unable to deliver enough power for full performance and the BIOS throttles the system to stay within the power available from the Adapter.
65W Adapter getting hot is normal -- it's being pushed to its limit. What the X220 needs is something with a bit more capacity, like 72W.
My solution to (3) and (4) was to buy a slim 90W combo adapter on eBay at a real bargain price.
I consider it a small price to pay for what is otherwise a very good price for a very good machine
(albeit not as good a machine as we've come to expect from the ThinkPad brand).
    Hope that helps,

  • X220 backlight bleed. Gaps in lid.

The x220's lid has a 2 piece design. Mine has uneven gaps where the 2 pieces meet. Well not gaps, just that the 2 pieces are not flush at certain points. Is this normal ??? Also, the backlight bleed is pissing me off. If the screen was bigger I wouldn't mind but its leaking from like 7 different places on the bottom and it's very noticable considering its a 12" display. I feel like I got ripped off. The flimsy lid and backlight bleeding doesn't make it feel like a "premium HD" display as its advertized. Should I get the screen replaced ?

THS - can you provide photos of the gaps you're describing?   the X220 will have slight gaps between the display surface and bezel but shouldn't have any around the perimeter of the bezel where it meets the lid.
the "bleed" you're seeing is a function of the LEDs being of high intensity.   these need to be brighter on IPS panels to account for the additional polarization layer.   the effect you see is in no way linked to the construction of the lid or bezel, or any pressure put on the actual display.   having torn apart X220 displays over a dozen times already, i can say this with 100% certainty.   this can be confirmed by disassembly.
the LCD panel has an air gap all around it specifically to mitigate any unnecessary or artificial pressure put on the edges or rear of the display panel.   if something is pushing on the display then it's simply not assembled correctly.

  • Backlight Bleeding als Feature beim T440p

    Hallo,

So.
Soweit so schlecht.
"Beweis-Fotos" sehr freuen.

  • Do Replacement LCDs Now for the Late 2009 iMac i7 Backlight Bleeding Free?

Hi. My iMac i7 late 2009 I believe has too much backlight bleeding on the sides. It's got an international warranty until March of 2011. The authorized Apple repair shop says if the find out it the LED LCD needs replacement and that they will get it from Apple's center in Singapore which will arrive in 7 days.
Should I have the LCD replaced and will the LCD from Singapore be backlight bleed free, guaranteed? Or this is really unavoidable? What's your experience on this, was having it replaced better or the same or worse? It is hard to enjoy movies that are letterboxed coz' the sides are bleeding. Thank you in advance. Advanced happy All soul's day and halloween. Gbu.

  • Backlight Bleeding on iphone 4S

My iPhone 4s has a little bit like backlight bleeding. It can see when you tilt the screen. but in normal case, its not noticable. you can see it by tilting the phone. Is this normal for the apple's LCD Backlight? thanks

in my country (philippines), no apple shops have a warranty purposes. We can only use the warranty to the telcos (Globe Telecom and Smart Communications). They said that it will be off to Singapore in 3-5 months of warranty. Its a very long period to take. :/

  • Backlight bleed on Edge 15 (not ThinkPad Edge 15)

    Hello,
I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially.
Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?
Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that?
EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome.
    Thanks!

For those with Lenovo Edge 15 (not ThinkPad Edge 15 !), please try to install BIOS.

  • Backlight bleed on iMac 27"

    I don't understand this.
Why is it that every iMac 27" has this stupid light bloom from the bottom right hand corner? It is incredibly distracting.
Having had several replacements for flickering and other problems, I can tell you that backlight bleed on these machines is very variable. But every time, there's this distracting white light off to the right and it is ******* me off.
After nearly three months of ******** with these machines, I'm asking for my money back.

Thanks for informing us on your decision.

  • 27" iMac backlight bleed

I bought the 27" iMac i7 and had bad backlight bleed in the bottom right corner.  This issue isn't new, but now I'm wondering if any imacs work properly.  I returned it for another and opened it up to find the same issue and a nasty dead pixel dead center of the monitor.  Where is Apples quality control?  This is unacceptable.  Every imac in the apple store had the issue as well.  Though it was tough to tell in the bright light.
I want to switch from mac pro to imac, but I need a quality screen to edit my photos.  And, this aint it.  I have a crappy 30" $400 Hanns-G monitor that does not have back light bleed.  Whats wrong with this picture???

    Mine does.
Call AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine..

  • Frequency of iPAD Backlight Bleeding

    Dears,
Just i like to know the frequency of iPAD backlight bleeding, is this a common problem in all iPADs where can i find bleeding around the screen corners (to look bright than the other areas)
and is there any solution to fix this problem ?
    Thanks

I've never seen it on my iPad or the iPads I played with at BestBuy and Apple. It also doesn't come up that often on these forums.
If the standard troubleshooting in the manual doesn't correct your issue, the next step is a trip to the Genius Bar.

  • Macbook Pro Retina backlight bleed

I've been experiencing minor backlight bleed issues with my new 13 inch pro retina and not sure if this is a recurring issue with this generation because the majority of the posts about this problem are a couple of years old. I already exchanged one and BestBuy was hesitant to do the exchange, so I want to make sure this isn't an issue with all retina displays before I go return it to the store.

What you have is a hardware issue with no solution via software.  If you are looking for others who may have had the same problem and posted on this forum, use the SEARCH feature in the upper right hand corner.
The Apple store genius bar technicians would be in a better position in this situation since they work on 'sick' Macs all the time.
    Ciao.

  • IPad 2 'backlight bleed'?

We have three iPad's in the family, two iPad 2's and one iPad.  My iPad 2, which I have had since last August, has a fairly bright and noticeable light shining in from the left hand edge of the display.  This is what I would call 'backlight bleed'.
Is this a known issue and, if so, given the amount of money I paid for it, I don't want it repaired so I entitled to have it replaced under warranty?

    Hi
    Thank you for your response.
I'll have a look at the thread you included and see how my iPad 2 compares but, what I would like is a black or reasonably dark wallpaper to check out if there are any other parts of the display which also have this issue.
Any suggestions on where I could find such a wallpaper?
It's too early to say about what I'd like to do but I would certainly not accept any repair and I'm sure Apple Support would be very understanding, especially as the iPad 2 is only just 4 months old?

  • Planning to Buy iPad-3 concerned about Backlight Bleeding issue !

    Hi Guys,
I am planning to buy the iPad-3, BUt with so many issues of Backlight Bleeding issues popping up. It looks a Rampant issue. Do you guys think I should wait some days before the First Batch of Munfacturing is sold out. Maybe once the Second Batch of production hits the stores this problem would not be there. But at the moment looks like Early Production and the Hasty process to get the Products out on Launch day and ready for delivery could have been the reason these issues slipped out of Quality Control. Do I wait like a month or so? I can do that, will waiting a month help ? I hope I dont get it in my iPad. I dont wanna go through the hassles of exchanging and stuff I would rather wait and buy a little late than go through these issues.
    Cheers !
    Augustya

Augustya, you are always free to wait until another round of hardware becomes available if you are concerned about problems people are having.
I would point out, though, that the discussion group is often looked at as an emergency room in a hostpital...you see only problems because no one healthy goes there.  You can get a false sense of the magnitude of problems if you only look at the number of complaints showing up here.
On the news last night they said Apple sold over 3 million iPads last weekend...the couple dozen problems brought up on here is insignificant out of 3 million items.  Another way of looking at the magnitude of the problem.
So if you have the ability to buy now, you can always go to the store, Apple if that is what you have available, open the iPad there, check it out (they come charged) and see if there is a light bleed problem.  If so complain on the spot and ask for a different unit.
Or wait for another round to be manufactured...just do what you are most comfortable doing.
