  • Extremely Dim Screen; intermittent Issue

I'm hoping people still check this board out despite being 3 generations old.
So I dropped my phone and now the screen is extremely dim. I can see it if I hold it up to a light, but it's dim. Clearly the backlight is messed up.
The problem is only intermittent, sometimes the screen works, sometimes it does not. So, it appears there is something that came loose in the drop.
It's not covered by apple care, and I'm not quite eligible for an upgrade.
I guess my question is does anyone have an idea of what I should look for if I open it up to look for loose connections? Or if they have any idea what it would cost to fix (either at Apple or a 3rd party).
I'm not concerned about voiding warranty as it's not covered anymore, and I'm not concerned about it breaking (as I'm going to get a new one here in a few months), but I was just hoping I could fix it cheap and easily, and looking for advice.
    Thanks.

Have you tried basics from the manual?
    Restart, reset, restore.
Sorry, yes I should have stated that. I've tried resetting the settings, restarting the phone (with power+home key), and erasing and restoring the phone from my backup.
    The issue is still there.
EDIT: Also updated the firmware to the latest firmware for the 3G.

  • T400 screen problems...

Hi guys, I have a t400 that I purchased August of 2009, the LCD screen backlighting gradually messed up (i.e. half of it worked, or some sections would not have any backlighting while others would), so I changed it out.  The panel was 42T0705, a WXGA LED backlit samsung screen.  I bought the exact same FRU off of ebay, hooked it up, and booted my laptop up.  However, I find that the screen's backlight is on completely, but there is nothing displayed on the screen; I know that the computer is fully booted, though, because I can hear the windows startup sound and all that.  I tried hooking it up to an external monitor, but with no results.  Suggestions?
Btw, I have the integrated graphics option, and a P8xxx series processor.

Does putting in the original one work?

  • Will it mess up my iPod if I leave the backlight on all day?

Not 24/7 obviously, but while I'm at work I'd like it to be on so I can glance over and see the song sometimes.

On my nano, once the backlight has switched off, the screensaver kicks in, showing time and battery charge only - no track information. Is there a setting I've missed somewhere?
Aside from the lifespan of the backlight itself, there's also the issue of battery drain. I don't know exactly how much faster a battery will de-charge with the backlight on compared with having the backlight being off (maybe someone here has that info?) but I strongly suspect that it will drain a lot faster, meaning shorter playing times (probably not a big issue for you right now) and ultimately a shorter lifetime for the battery.
You will be able to get the battery replaced under the apple battery replacement program (not user-serviceable. Also, from what I gather, you'll be sent a reconditioned unit, not your own original unit which might work to your favour if your backlight is about to give up the ghost!). It's not super cheap... I guess it's a question of how much that track information is worth to you.

  • Mysterious forces changing backlight brightness

Some mysterious forces are changing my laptop's brightness and I can't seem to figure it out what it is.
For example, if my battery gets below 10% (also, why 10%?), it automatically changes brightness to something very low.
Similarly, if battery gets fully charged, it changes brightness. It also happens when I plug it into the AC or remove the adapter.
I've looked everywhere, tried changing settings (I really don't remember which ones anymore), but nothing seems to work.
Also, I've xfce4-power-manager installed, but closing it doesn't seem to effect this backlight changing.
Laptop-mode-tools is also set up, but backlight control is disabled.
My only idea is that it's changed by the driver, but how can I control it?
    edit:
    [soz@arch ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Also, changing backlight to vendor doesn't fix this. Instead it messes up xfce4-power-manager's backlight control.
Forgot to mention, I'm running a simple Openbox installation.

    Alright, an update.
The same thing happens even without running X at all. Even the brightness control keyboard hotkeys work without an X server running.
So it seems that they interact directly with hardware and it's not related to software at all. I think it's safe to say that the brightness change events happening on charger plug/unplug are related to this as well.
So if there's nothing in BIOS (I checked) I guess it's not fixable. I could set up an dirty hack using acpi handler scripts although it seems like an awful solution.
Or have you guys any other ideas?

  • Backlight keyboard stopped working after updating to snow leopard

Hi I have a late 2008 macbook pro. When I got the laptop it had 10.5.8 on it and the keyboard backlight was working fine. I dimmed it all the way down to save battery life. Later on I installed 10.6.2 then did an update to 10.6.5. I don't know where it stopped working allong the way but the keyboard backlight no longer works.
I can turn it up using the f keys. It will increase and decrease. There is not a circle with a line through it like I have read that other users have had when their backlight is not working properly.
I can increase it and decrease it. The light never comes on. I have installed that program that lets you control the backlight by putting it in the taskbar, that doesnt fix it. I called apple and reset the SMC by taking the battery out and holding the power button down for 5 seconds then putting the battery back in and turning it back on. That did not fix it. I also asked if there was some preference files that we could throw away to maybe reset it. We tossed about 5 files and that didnt fix it - sorry I cant remember the files. I did a fresh install of snow leopard but i didnt go past the "would you like to bring back your files" part of the install.
Can someone help me? The caps lock button lights up. I dont know if that matters. Please help me fix the backlight on my keyboard. I really dont want to install 10.5.8 again just to see if the light comes back on or not. Is there a bug in snow leopard that messes up my macbook? help!

maybe its fried ? could be just bad luck when you were doing the update ?
    Ridiculous!
    To the OP:
I'd recommend doing a SMC reset, if that doesn't take care of it do a PRAM reset. The instructions are:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Ipod has issues with Sleeping and Backlight

Hello, i'm having some issues with my ipod, (Nano 4th gen, assuming you already knew that because of the forum i posted in :D)
Anyways, a couple of days ago, i was using my Ipod, and i paused it for a bit. When i looked back a minute later i noticed the backlight was on even though i set it to turn off every 2 seconds. I reset it (menu+center) and played a couple songs, paused it and it did the same. The Backlight remained on even though the setting was as mentioned.
I ignored it, and maybe 4 days later, i hit the Sleep option on the menu, the iPod turned off, then started turning itself on and off repeatedly, even while i had the lock switched on. I reset it, and tried to turn it off with the Sleep option and it keeps turning itself on and off. If i try to make it Sleep with the Play/Pause button, it will do the same.
Now earlier i went to the Debug (or w/e it is) menu, (Menu+Center, Select+Left) to mess around and see if i could find anything weird there and went to IO>IOSTATUS, and noticed that USBDETECT was flickering between 1 and 0, but i don't know if that explains whats going on with my ipod
Thanks in advance, and please help me fix my ipod! xD

Honestly, I have no clue what's happening with your iPod. But on mine, I have the same kind, I did the same thing and went to IOSTATUS and under usb detect for me it just says 0 so maybe that has something to do with it. I hope you manage to get it to work again.

  • Ipod update messed up video

i just updated my ipod to 1.1
before the update..my videos were running fine, i could watch a full length video without running into any problems.
after the update..the ipod plays the video for about 30 sec then pauses and then resumes. Not only does it pause but it does not have any audio after..only video.

Hello, the same thing it happened to me when I upgrade my firmware. you can download a software called ipodwizard and follow the tutorial on the link below... it will help you to downgrade firmware. it worked for me...someone in ipodwizard forum told that apple release that update before it was done...so they messed up with us... I've heard of more issues (backlight problems), anyway..try this if you want to:

  • Turning Off Backlight Causes Kernel Panic Lenovo y550p Laptop

Recently my Lenovo y550p has started with an issue that seems to be persistent with others using a similar hardware profile with newer 3.1 kernels.
When using the function keys, or letting the screen backlight turn off after a certain amount of time through power settings, upon turning the screen back on I receive a kernel panic. The issue has been documented here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=748210, by others with the same issue. I haven't seen anything for this with Arch and was wondering if it will be looked into or if a fix is known?
    Thanks

Glad I'm not the only one. My temporary solution was to download the kernel and wl package from December 2012 found http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/ and then mkpkg and install it. It'll work as an alternative for now, without messing up the primary kernel setup.

  • Backlight on keyboard command- help!

hey, i have a mac pro with retina display. i was messing around with the keys to exit a game off full screen and my backlight on the keyboard has been switched off. does anyone know the command to switch it back on again please?

    thanks mate, all sorted now

  • Backlight on but nothing on screen!!

I clicked the menu button and the screen backlight turned on but nothing appears on it, it just stays on forever...! I tried the menu + select for 6 sec and the screen just dims out and then dims in again to stay on forever without anything ever appearing on it. Its draining the battery like nuts cause its hotter than my coffee machine!

Did I mention that it doesn't mount on my desktop? Since I dont have any interface with my Ipod through the computer, I can only mess with it manually by pressing its buttons.
The only commands I know of are the "menu + select for 6 sec" and the "menu + select for 6 sec then keep select pressed and press rewind button and keep pressed for a couple of seconds" and none of them work.
I just got it out of the service shop cause I drained the battery connecting it to my hub which isnt USB 2.0! Pretty stupid,I know...but then again I didnt receive any message saying it didnt have enough power to charge the thing, and since I'd be using it for over a week it seemed pretty strange.
Oh well...seems that something will have to be serviced again.

  • Fan, battery, lighting, all messed up

I have the 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i7. Bought it in April 2010 new.
I was just sitting here having turned on the computer for like 10 minutes. Running Chrome and Skype. Suddenly it shut down. I started it back up and the fan is in overdrive but the machine is cold. The date was messed up. The battery is not being detected, the power adaptor doesn't light up yet the computer is working with or without the power adaptor. The keyboard backlighting is gone. Doesn't hold my internet connection automatically when I have to restart. Must reneter password or select my network.
I did run the software update yesterday for the first time. Have reset the SMC and zapped the PRAM.
    What happened?

    Reset the SMC again:

If that doesn't fix it, take it in for service.

  • Backlight problem on MacBook

    Hi,
I have a 2008 MacBook (A1181) and am having one issue that I can't seem to figure out. A few weeks ago, the backlight started giving me problems. Specifically, it would shut off. Apple wanted $300 to fix it and I'd rather just get a new computer at that point, so I thought I'd try and fix it myself. If I break it, oh well.
Anyway, I ordered a new backlight inverter board and an inverter cable, but the problem persists. If I leave the computer alone completely, the backlight turns on after about a minute of sitting at the login screen. However, as soon as I touch a key/move the mouse, it shuts off. If I wait again, it comes back on a minute or two later, but then the same thing happens.
I've tried an external keyboard and have gotten the same results.
Any ideas at all what could be causing this? Or is the hardware just messed up?

Go to Apple Menu / About This Mac. Click on More Info ... next on System Report. In the left hand column, under Hardware, select USB. The right side will show the USB Device Tree. Look through that and check for "Built-in iSight". That is your camera. If it is not listed the camera is not working.
For backlighting, try this: go to System Preferences / Keyboard. Uncheck "Adjust keyboard lighting in low light".

  • Keyboard backlighting will never turn off

Heya guys and girls. Thanks ahead of time for your help. I was just about to go to sleep tonight as I had just started a large download. I proceeded to turn down my brightness all the way down....but for some reason I couldn't turn down my backlighting on my keyboard at all! I thought for some reason it could have gotten stuck in backlighting mode (makes no sense, but worth a shot) in windows, so I booted into windows and tried to turn it off, which didn't work.
Basically what happens in windows is if I press F8 a few times, the backlighting symbol appears to be greyed out with the little circle with a slash through it. If I spam the button, every once and a while it will not be greyed out and show me that my backlighting is infact full...But when i try to decrease it after it shows up, it goes back to being greyed out and the circle with the slash reappears.
In osx, F8-10 are greyed out with the circle/slash and spamming does nothing...
Let me know of any fixes/ideas you may have please!
    Message was edited by: dentonw

bump. no one else is experiencing this? I fixed it with a shut down. I think when I go from windows to osx something gets messed up in between. Right now I'm in osx and i can't turn my backlit keyboard on (earlier i couldn't turn it off).
