Backlight is out on my 3rd gen 32 gig

The ipod works like normal other than this, is this a hard fix?

Planb77..... Thank you for confirming that..... I guess the battery is shot.  I do have a later version of ipod and am very happy with it, however I was trying to ressurect this one for use on my motorcycle.
How do I replace the battery.... is it easy to get the ipod apart w/o destroying it.... I would love to delve inside any way and replace the battery.
Can you or anyone help here and point me in the right direction to replace?
Thanks for the help planb77

Is iOS7 going to come out for iPod 3rd gen

No.  For iPod touch, iOS 7 requires the current iPod touch model, which is 5th gen.

  • What updates does the Ipod touch 3rd gen 8 gig get?

    i was just wondering

Yes, a 3G iPod can go to 5.1.1. However, many users who think thay have a 3G actually have a 2G. A 2G can only go to 4.2.1
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
To update to 5.1.1 if you have a 3G the computer needs iTunes 10.5 or later.

  • HOW I GOT MY IPOD TO WITH WITH ITUNES 7 (3RD GEN)

I had pretty much the exact same problems as alot of people on here. Let me recap:
    1. Installed iTunes7
    2. 3G 15Gig iPod is no longer recognized.
So this is what I did to solve this. I have a mac laptop and a PC desktop. My iPod syncs with the PC. This what I did:
    3. Boot the Mac and open up activity monitor.
    4. Plug in the iPod. iTunes will open and freeze.
    5. Use Activity monitor to kill the itunes process.
    6. Open up finder->applications->utilities->ipod updaters
    7. Run the newest app to restore the ipod.
    8. Eject the iPod from the mac and connect it to the PC.
    9. My PC detected the iPod and told me it was corrupt.
    10. Use the PC to restore the iPod via iTunes 7.
    11. Reboot.
    12. My iPod began to work at this point.
Took me a better part of the day, but my iPod seems to work without a problem at the moment. Again, its a 3rd Gen, 15 Gig unit. This fix should be applicable to all non-functioning units...
If you only have a mac, fixing the ipod will be easier. All you will have to do is perform steps 3 through 7 and it should work out.
    Hope this helps!!
    Andrew

Also, if your iPod does not display the do not disconnect icon on its screen, you will need to reboot to continue.
If the iPod does display the icon, but itunes doesnt recognize the unit, use Windows' "Safely Remove Hardware" application to disconnect it.
    Hope this helps...

  • How to connect old 3rd gen firewire ipod to pc w/o firewire?

Just got out my ancient 3rd gen 20GB windows-formatted ipod and its Firewire Cable (6pins on each side). I charged it, and now can't figure out how to connect it to my pc. I don't have any kind of dock - only the 6pin firewire cable (identical on each end).

OK - just figured out that this is a 2nd generation ipod (20GB). It has a firewire port at the top with a cover over it. I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support and they suggested I try the forums, etc. They didn't know how to connect this ipod to a USB port. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Ipod 3rd Gen (4gb) not turning on.

    Hello!
Okay, so i have had quite a few iPods in my day and ive never had an issue. For christmas this year my niece received a 3rd gen, 4 gig refurbed nano from Apple. I ended up setting it up for her and loading her music, all of it working fine. She had it for a few days then ran into an issue (The screen wasn't turning on) so i had her reset it and it worked fine.
Throughout the January she kept having minor issues (Being 12, i figure she is beating it up more than what i would if it were mine). Anyways, she has had this most recent issue for about a week now and i have the iPod now so i can try to troubleshoot it for her.
The current issue is that the ipod will not turn on, will not charge, and isn't recognized when hooked up to the USB of my laptop.
I have an 8gb 3rd gen ipod that i've been testing before and after testing the 4gb and the 8gb works perfectly fine. Turns on, works with the wall charger, works with my dock, works with the USB. The 4gb doesn't work with anything.
I've tried the 5 Rs and even setting my usb root not to turn off. Its a refurb, and im sure its coming up on 2 months since date of purchase. I doubt it was purchased with a warranty so i'm not sure where else to turn. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had the exact same problem about 10 minutes ago. I was freaking out because I'm going on vacation soon and I was getting all worked up because none of my three power sources were charging it and it wasn't even turning on at all. Mine is also refurbished.
I called Support and the automated phone person gave me these steps:
    1. Plug the iPod into the computer
    2. Set it down on a flat surface
    3. Take index fingers and hold menu and center button for about 5 seconds (it actually took me 20 seconds)
It then connected to the computer and turned on. I don't know why trying to reset it normally didn't work but try this and I hope it helps!!

  • 3rd gen = 2nd gen?

Okay, So I recently got a new iPod Touch 3rd Generation, replacing my old 1stG one. I was excited for the new iOS 4, mainly because of the home wallpaper feature (I know, childish.). I spent a few hours dl'ing and fixing my iPod up for iOS4, when I turned it on, and i saw to my dismay that I could not set the picture for the home background. This really disappointed me. Then I figured out that the iOS 4 option for backgrounds only works with 32G and 64G iPod Touches. Later I found out that the 3rd gen is the equivilency of a 2nd gen, same specs. So really, what am I paying the extra money for? A false advertised iPod touch that is supposed to be newer and better, but is the same as the old on.
Really what I am getting at is, make support for a home background for the 3rd gen.
    2 questions:
    1. Is apple planning support for this?
    2. Should I return my 3rd gen, tell my friends not to get them, because they are just 2nd gens under false names.

If you bought your ipod new and it's a 8gb, then there is no G3 8gb. 8gb were upgraded to OS 3.0, but it is still the G2 hardware. The 32GB amd 64GB ipods currently in stores are G3 which have more ram and better hardware than the G2. I do not believe Apple claims that the 8gb is a 3rd generation.

  • 3rd gen ipod problem

I am running windows xp with the latest version of itunes. I have a 3rd gen 40 gig ipod, everything works fine and it loads approx 200 songs before an error occurs, this error goes something like this.
"The drive is not ready for use its door may be open...drive G....etc"
i have restored my ipod countless times and this msg still comes up, any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Sounds like some of the music you have in your library could have been loaded from another drive you had plugged into your computer.
You say that it loads about 200songs and then stops. Do you know specifically what song it stops on? If so are you able to play that music file from your music library? Or do you get a similar message or something that says that it can not be found would you like to locate it?

  • I have an iPod 3rd gen, and the audio jack plays distorted music?

If I don't tightly hold the headphones into the iPod it won't play music/sounds clearly. My warranty is up and I'm not sure what to do. If I send it in to Apple, will they give me back a 3rd gen 32 gig iPod touch (the same info as the one I currently have) or will they give me back a nano or something that's worth less money? Help me, please and thank you:)

Apple will exchange it for the same model/capacity for this price:

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • HT1454 Can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

After having spent EUR 130 on cables from apple, i still can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • 3rd Gen Ipod touch 5.1.1 update grays out wifi

After updating my 3rd Gen ipod touch, I can no longer use wifi. The wifi box is grayed out. I have reset the network connection settings, and have reset the ipod back to factory settings and still nothing. I see that this has happened to lots of iphone users but havent heard much about ipod touch. I wont even think about updating my iphone until a bug fix comes out. So far Apple is saying it is a hardware issue, but theres no way. No way thousands of people are having a hardware issue just after a software update. Can anyone help?
Also now only about 20% of my songs will load on the ipod and the screen is frozen. Great

  • My ipod touch 3rd gen will not sync to pc.itunes file menu sync my ipod is greyed out

my ipod touch 3rd gen will not sync to pc.itunes file menu sync my ipod is greyed out.and i cant sync or put any new songs.please help me.

I've gotten the iPod to sync after restoring it and not changing ANY of the music sync settings.  I didn't even click "sync music", I just have it on manual and clicked autofill.
After it synced all of the music successfully, I tried to sync a playlist (my recently added), and it's gone bonkers again, it won't sync the playlist's music, or any new music now.

  • My iPod touch (3rd gen) isn't putting out sound other than static and high pitched noises through the tv hookup, the built in speakers, and headphones. Can anyone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

Everything on my iPod touch (3rd gen) works just fine except the audio out put.

Try #2 and #3 in link below. If neither work, you most likely have a hardware issue. Contact Apple or a third-party service center.
