Backlight keyboard damage

So, Me, as well as many others, spilled my coffee on my mac keyboard. Now, I got all the liquid out from the keyboard, and everything seemed to be fine. But 2 days later,  where I spilled the coffee, the brightness, were reduced. Only 1/3 of the keyboard is damaged, but when I talked to apple support online, they estimated the price for me, which ended on 300-330 US dollars. Now isn't that a little to much for a minor damage like this? Anyone else having the same experiences?

yes i've tried everything. It shows this sign right under the brightness bars (which are empty) http://images-cdn01.associatedcontent.com/image/A1386/138625/300_138625.jpg
Something must be wrong with the setting or w/e but see, I've tried everything with the setting, i've looked into everything and i've tried resetting SMC and then PRAM but it just won't work!!
not that i use backlight much, but it's obvious that there's something wrong with this machine so im a little worried...
could it be caused by any software i've installed? although i don't see how that's possible since none of them have anything to do with my keyboard...
someone please save my backlight!!!

  • W520 - No backlight, keyboard disabled.

I have been having an issue with my W520 where the backlight is completely dead and the keyboard isn't responding to any input. Both of these issues popped up at the same time - I can confirm the screen is working by holding a bright flashlight directly against the it, and the computer will respond to input if I hook up a USB keyboard and use that instead. I can even boot all the way in to windows using this method. I have tried resetting the bios to defaults, and that didn't help at all. Has anybody seen this or anything like it before? I'm imagining one of three issues -
The switch that detects whether the lid is open is broken, causing it to think the lid is always closed
Both the keyboard and backlight were damaged in something like a power surge.
A fuse has blown that controls power supplied to both the keyboard and the backlight.
Any ideas or input are greatly appreciated.

I believe they are on different fuses, although I don't have a circuit diagram. I have replaced fuses on many models and I never had the keyboard affected. Was the machine dropped or involved in a liquid spill? The fuse for the backlight is very easy to blow, and hard to fix, without specialized equipment. The keyboard is connected as a USB device. When you boot with an external monitor, do the trackpoint buttons work (the 2 that are part of the keyboard, as opposed to the touchpad buttons.) They are on the same cable.
The lid switch is attached to the left side of the screen, about halfway up. It is tripped by a little magnet in the keyboard bezel. There are two LCD cables on that model.  One is a cable that plugs into the motherboard, near the fan. The other one has a flat connector held down by a little metal cap. The one that plugs by the fan runs through the left hinge. If you unplug it, the screen will still work, but the camera, microphone, thinklight and lid switch will stop working. You can unplug it to test. My guess is a blown fuse for the LCD, but I don't know about the keyboard.  The fuses are all very-fast-burning ones, so it is hard to imagine 2 circuits being affected by a surge.  My experience has been that backlight fuses are usually blown by someone plugging or unplugging a cable (usually behind the panel) without pulling the main battery, or by not discharging capacitors by pressing the power button a couple of times.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 Backlight Keyboard Not Working?! Software Problem...

So my "MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011" backlight keyboard hasn't been working. I have tried LabTick today, doesn't fix anything. Even in high or low lighting situations (dispite the Adjust keyboard brightness in low light being off) doesn't like to go on. It doesn't give me a circle with a cross like it does with that box checked in day light. It shows on the screen the
16 dots fully light after hitting F6 fully, just it doesn't light up. I one time had to reset my Mac OS at the Apple Store, it fixed the problem, but when I restored with a time machine backup, it went back to this software problem. How can I fix this?! What is wrong with my OS? Mountain Lion? How can I fix this?!

If it does not detect the display automatically, try going to system preferences>displays, click detect displays.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Can't turn off backlight keyboard in XP How long this problem will live?

    I'm using MBP 15" 2.66Ghz (late 2008 model)
My Windows XP SP3 with Bootcamp 3.0 most of the things work well except backlight keyboard, I tried to press F5 to reduce backlight to minimun but backlight still there so annoying me even more every times I boot into Windows XP backlight will reset itself to maximum amount of light. ==" Anyone got an ideal how to solve or just waiting for Apple engineer to fix it but when I've seen this problem long long time ago.... Srry for my bad english.
    br,
    Tum

Finally figured it out. In case anyone else has the same problem of your computer ignoring changes in the Face Tracking Utility screen, try this:
Go to Webcam Center. Click on "Capture" then the "Source" tab, one of two discrete grey tabs just above the video screen.
Under "Extended Settings" you have the options for face tracking: off, continuous or smart. Click it and your computer should actually hold onto this setting until you change it again!
    Good luck.

  • Backlight Keyboard - force use of brightness control on keys..

I have a 15" PB, 1.67Ghz. I love the backlight keyboard, but sometimes the light sensor will not trigger the backlight to come on the keys. Even if I press the F10/F9 keys, it briefly will light up the keys, and then stop. How can I force the use of the F10/F9 keys to adjust the brightness of the keys, even though the light conditions are not totally dark?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Unfortunately you can't. The ability to turn on the backlight is tied to the light sensor readings. I've not heard of a work around for this apart from physically covering the light sensors (which are under the grilles on either side of your keyboard).

  • Satellite A500-1E4 - Does it have backlight keyboard?

Does the Satellite A500-1E4 with nordic keyboard, have a backlit keyboard?

    Hi PEJ,
1.) Read exactly!! *Only some* A500 have backlight keyboard. Not all models have this feature.
2.) It would be interesting to know, why LED lightning for touchpad, Satellite-logo, etc. has something to do with the keyboard.
All A500 and newer Toshiba notebooks have LED lightning for touchpad, etc. but backlight is an additional feature. ;)

  • LED Backlight Keyboard not working

I downloaded OSX Mountain Lion in August of 2013 and immeidately after downloading it, my LED backlight keyboard option completely disappeared off of the Keyboard Preferences. There's a blank spot where the LED backlight keyboard settings should be. The F5 and F6 LED keyboard keys are also unresponsive. Is there anyway to fix this? Or do I need to take it in and get a new keyboard? I am currently operating OS X Mavericks 10.9.

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple.

  • T440P Backlight Keyboard...

Hi,I got T440P model: 20AN0069USWithout backlight keyboard, can it be replacled to backlight keyboard?where to order?need with hebrew letters also...Thanks, Gil.

    Hello and welcome,
The keyboard is listed as an optional service part so you should be able to replace it if you're handy.  The Hardware Maintenance Manual includes instructions.
The keyboard FRU numbers are included in the FRU list.  I beleive the one you're looking for is the 04X0115 but please double-check that.
It looks like it can be ordered here https://www-304.ibm.com/shop/europe/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=-376&storeId=376&langId=375&categoryId=3063814 .  The Google may have other sources.
All that said, I've never done an unlit to lit keyboard swap.  I believe that it is only necessary to do the swap without other mods, but haven't actually tried it.

  • Backlight keyboard for G580 laptop

    Hi
Is there any way to get the backlight keyboard on the Lenovo G580 laptop. I need it very badly.
    Thanks,
    Ravi

    Hi raviameer,
I believe not. But here are the two ideas for you to consider. Buy external keyboard and plug it into your laptop. And the second thing is keyboard light. Check it out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Keyboard-Light-1PCS-Hot-LED-Pocket-Lamp-For-PC-Notebook-Laptop-Tablets-B...
