Backlight Keyboard - force use of brightness control on keys..

I have a 15" PB, 1.67Ghz. I love the backlight keyboard, but sometimes the light sensor will not trigger the backlight to come on the keys. Even if I press the F10/F9 keys, it briefly will light up the keys, and then stop. How can I force the use of the F10/F9 keys to adjust the brightness of the keys, even though the light conditions are not totally dark?

Unfortunately you can't. The ability to turn on the backlight is tied to the light sensor readings. I've not heard of a work around for this apart from physically covering the light sensors (which are under the grilles on either side of your keyboard).

    Whenever I click the little mic button when typing in text (no matter in what application it is), my iPhone keeps switching it over to a foreign keyboard and I can only switch back by reopening the app or quitting the text frield and clicking it again.     I found the same problem. My (Australian) keyboard has { and [ on the same key. The shortcut for "History, Back" is cmd+[ . This conflicts with the shortcut cmd+{ , and going back takes priority it seems.
    What does work for me to shift between tabs (even though it doesn't show in the menu shortcuts) is:
    cmd + shift + { (to move tab to the left)
    cmd + shift + } (to move tab to the right)

    What im trying to do is create 8 button in flash using as2 to control certain keys on the keyboard.
    When i click a button ive created in flash i want it to trigger a key eg. "a"
    Is this possible, if so how would i go about this?

    In what way do you expect Flash/actionscript to control a key of a keyboard?  Are you expecting the key to be pressed, like a player piano?  If you need a button to produce an "a", then just program it to produce an "a".

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

         I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

    Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    I`ve made my 3rd update of Arch since installation, and... where previous two succeeded, the third one failed. It messed up my system
    The problem is, i cannot change brightness any more through my function keys (and since i`m using Openbox as my DE, i cannot change it at all ). The brightness now is so low that i can barely see what i am typing. And it is not only in my Arch, it also messed up Windows and everything else: grub, bootup screen where i can select bios properties - everything.  I ran xev and now i see that FN+Right/Left are not detected anymore as brightness keys. It says:

    P.S. My notebook is Acer Aspire 7720g with Nvidia 8600M GT. I tried solutions from this topic: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73889 but none worked for me... The problem is that the system is completely unusable at this point, since i barely see anything on the monitor, and that sucks

    I can't see what you did in Arch affecting your windows installation at all.  If you try to boot into windows and increase the brightness (since most laptops store the brightness level of the laptop as it was set, on battery, at least my 2 laptops do), does the new brightness level "stick" for all things?  If so, the only issue you have is to re-map the function keys properly, and to configure a script or something to increase/decrease lcd brightness.  You can make a simple script that echoes a value into your /proc/acpi/video/LCD/brightness file (the file path will vary, so it may be under UVGA or so).  If, however, it doesn't increase again, it may very well be a hardware issue, and not a software (since, as I said above, it's highly unlikely that an Arch update has affected Windows in any way).

  • Brightness control problem after returning from Stand By - T500

    Hi,
    I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 under Windows XP SP2.
    In Power Manager, I have created a custom power management scheme and set the brightness to 80%. This works fine when I boot up the machine, but when I return from Stand By mode (sleep) the machine automatically sets the brightness to 100%. I will then have to use to brightness control buttons to set it back to 80%. This is very annoying and obviously a bug.
    I have the latest BIOS and Power Manager version installed.
    Can someone offer a solution please?

    I found your post after searching as I hae the exact problem you describe - I turn off the screen using Fn F3 and later when I wake the display the brightness jumps to 100% and I cannot get it to turn down to any level. It's stuck at 100%. Yup, just tried closing-n-opening the lid the screen goes to my previously set brightness level.
    my drivers are current as at 2010-03-26 (today)

  • No TrackPoint Scroll and Brightness Control After Resume

    Hello All,
    I'm having an issue with my new x120e where after a couple suspend/resume cycles both the Trackpoint scroll function and the ability to adjust screen brightness no longer work. Using the Trackpoint only yields results as a pointing device, and trying to use the brightness controls does nothing--no on-screen brightness level display. I've searched the forums but couldn't find these exact issues, and I'm using the latest versions of the UltraNav driver and Utility.

    check via http://support.lenovo.com and see that your Power Management software is at its latest version. If not, download and install.
    if it is the latest, uninstall all UltraNav drivers+Utilities and the Power Management.
    let window install its generic drivers. Test and see if it happens again

  • Just had my logic board replaced, dim screen with no brightness control

    My MacBook Pro 17 inch was just in for repair due to the nvidia 8600 issue (no video, Mac won't boot, etc.). I have it back as of this afternoon but when I turned it on the screen is unbelievably dim -- almost as if I have the brightness at the second-to-lowest level.
    Here's the catch: when I attempt to use the brightness control, either via F1/F2 keys or in System Preferences the brightness will not change. The icon overlay shows up on the screen as if it is working but the screen brightness just doesn't work.
    When I bring the brightness indicator all the way down, to the point where the screen would normally shut off, the screen stays on...but it's just the same dim screen.
    Any ideas?

    Test while started in Recovery : if the problem persists, then it likely is a hardware issue.
    Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) probably won't change anything, but you can readily do it before contacting the repairers.

    Brightness control keys were not working in GNOME, even with the kernel boot parameter acpi_backlight=vendor.

  • Volume & Brightness Controls do not work on Keyboard

    I have a five and a half year old Mac (purchased January 2009) running OS X 10.5.8.  My keyboard recently became faulty, so I went to the Apple store and bought the exact same thing as a replacement.  The keys all appeared to work fine and I was very happy.  However, today I tried to play a song from my iTunes library and noticed the volume up and down keys did not work!  I then tried all of the keys across the top and discovered that the brightness keys that are identifiable do not work... that in fact the brightness up is the F15 key (when it should be the F2 key) and the brightness down is the F14 key (when it should be the F1 key).
    I have read through the forums on these boards and tried all the suggested solutions.  I have:
    1) Tried checking and unchecking the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."  Restarted the computer.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    2) Reset the PRAM.  Did it three times.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    3) Rebooted in Safe Mode to delete system caches.  Restarted from the Apple menu.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    4) Someone suggested going to the Apple downloads page, but they didn't follow that suggestion up with anything else.  I see updates for keyboard software, however they are all for wireless keyboards.  My keyboard is wired, and it has the number pad on the right.
    5) Run the command "sudo killall coreaudiod" in Terminal.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    6) Deleted the com.apple.soundpref.plist file in the Preferences folder in the User Library folder.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    7) Checked the Audio Midi Setup in Applications to ensure that the settings for output are set to 2ch- 24 bit and 44100.0 Hz for format.  Which they are.
    I will say that something did work!  I downloaded and successfully set the function keys for volume and brightness using Spark (thanks to user turtlenecknz!).  I will use this method as I think it is the only thing that will fix my problem (for now, at least).  I'm just curious if there is a way to avoid using a software program as I'm not sure if it will need to be re-opened on system restart... for me, it boils down to reliability.
    After reading this thread - Re: Mac Aluminum keyboard VOLUME KEYS not remapping - I've determined that the original keyboard I had for this computer was the MB110LL/A model.  The Apple store gave me the MB110LL/B model.  That is why I'm having this issue.  Does Apple even carry the A Model any more?  I found the A Model on Amazon, but it's $81 + $6 shipping- yikes!  Does anyone know another site that sells it for less?
    Any other troubleshooting suggestions are greatly appreciated!  And, if anyone knows whether Apple carries the A Model any more (or know someplace I can get one cheaper than $87!), that is appreciated as well!  Thank you to anyone that read this rather lengthy message, and then takes the time to respond.

  • Is it possible to use *only* voice control - no keyboard or mouse at all?

    Short story, hope you can bear with me.
    I have a client who was using Windows for years. He has some disability that means he really can't use a mouse or keyboard. He has been using Dragon Naturall Speaking for about 5-7 years *on Windows*. He also has a Wacom tablet, but uses it sparingly.
    About 6 months ago, he was having problems and was fed up with the problems he was having on his Windows machine. He called me and said "That's it. I'm going to Mac." He bought an iMac the next day, about two weeks before Lion was released. He had also purchased Dragon Dictate for Mac.
    I set it all up, installed it and he was ready to start training Dragon.
    A few months later, he calls and says, "I need to install Windows on my Mac because the Dragon Dictate for Mac is useless. I've spoken to them and they admit that there are several things you just can't do. Like moving the mouse." I think he means things like dragging an item into another folder, or drawing a box around several items on the desktop in order to trash them or copy them or drag them into an email as an attachment, etc. I keep asking him to be more specific, but all I can really get is that It. Can't. Be. Done. On. A. Mac.
    And that, of course, really makes my skin crawl. I mean, come on, it's a Mac. They have *great* features for Accessibility. Surely, this must be a solved problem.
    But, I have looked. I looked at the additions in Lion. I looked at the literature for Dragon. I have tried to do it myself on my computer. So far, I'm stumped.
    I understand that there might be a learning curve, such as learning to say *where* you want something to be dragged to, instead of actually dragging it there visually. "Move selected document to Documents" and so on. But, I'm still hard pressed to find a way to do *every*thing (or a 99+%) using only voice control.
    Does *any*one have any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, solutions?
    His solution? He bought a used Windows computer today. I've copied (again) all his data from his iMac back to the Windows PC and installed Dragon Naturally Speaking, etc.
    Surely, this can't be the only solution. There *must* be a way to do this on the Mac. Right?

    I checked the Bios of my neighbors A100, so he has no option for Wake-on-Keyboard, too. I think its not implemented in that bios.
    If this helps you: try the latest bios for that machine, maybe the implemented that option in a newer version.

  • Using F1, F2 as brightness control

    I need to enable the "Use all F1, F2 as standard function Keys" option in system preference because I run an Application that requires F6 for a function.
    However I miss using F1 and F2 as brightness controls so I set those as shortcuts in the shortcuts page.
    Whever I push those buttons, they just give me a screen flash as if they are not assinged, please help!
    I know I can always use Cmd+F1/F2 to enable the special function but it would be useful to be able to assign the shortcut myself.

    Update: I went to the Apple Store to find out the current gen rMBP does not have this option in it's System Preference pane. Not sure if thats the reason the shortcut is not available. I'm using late 2012 iMac on the current 10.9.2 release. The quck fix is to install the 3rd party "FunctionFlip" pref addon.

    So you have two computers sitting together,  you don't have a kvm switch, and using two keyboards and mice is just plan annoying!
    X2X is the solution. This program allows you to use your mouse and keyboard from Computer A on Computer B.
    From the man page
    x2x  allows the keyboard and mouse on one ("from") X display to be used to control another ("to") X display.
    How to make it work?
    Allow TCP from xorg on both systems
    Edit /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc and change
    exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp
    to
    exec /usr/bin/X
    Computer A = computer that has the keyboard and mouse you want to use
    Computer B = computer that does not have the keyboard and mouse you want to use hooked up to it
    On Computer B run the command
    xhost +ComputerA
    Where ComputerA is the hostname/ip address of ComputerA
    This allows ComputerA to connect to ComputerB's xorg server
    On Computer A run the command
    x2x -to ComputerB:0.0 -west
    Where ComputerB is the hostname/ip address of ComputerB
    Now on ComputerA you should be able to move the mouse left, off the screen, and be able to control ComputerB!
    I use this to control my laptop using my desktop's mouse and keyboard. It's a lot easier than switching between my desktop keyboard/mouse and laptop keyboard/mouse!

    Today I was looking into this and got working very fast using this thread. Are you sure you restarted your X server after changing xserverrc? Are you sure your display is at :0?
    Use
    echo $DISPLAY
    on the terminal to find out. Also you need x2x installed on both machines.

  • T61 brightness controls don't work on keyboard

    I'm having a small issue when suddenly the brightness controls (Fn + Home/End) don't work.  The other hotkey's work, like the on screen magnifier, sleep, hibernate, etc.  but the brightness for some reason suddenly doesn't work.  If it helps, i'm running a dual boot XP pro/Vista Ultimatex64.  Any Ideas?

    You mean the control/microphone on your Apple headphones? The most likely cause is that you have fluff or something similar in the socket. See this thread for suggestion on how to clean it out using a paperclip or canned air (less good) discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10589736
