Backlight Keyboard not illuminating

Hello all,
Please excuse me if this is a silly question but i think i'm going slightly mad.
I've had my MBP 13" for about 4 months now and i am starting to notice some of the keys are not as bright as some of the others.
For example as i sit here the I O P L keys are quite dull but all the keys to the left are really bright. I have checked the brightness by using the F5 and F6 keys and the light below the I O P L keys goes darker and lighter. It's just that the actual keys seem darker.
I would take it to an apple shop but it would need to get dark for them to confirm any fault if any.
Am i going crazy? Has anyone seen this?
Again sorry if this is a stupid question.
Thanks for your help
Ian

As rkaufmann87 indicated... bring it in to an Apple store and have them take a look at it. The individual key lighting should be consistent. I had a desktop Logitech keyboard where the lighting on one side of the keyboard was significantly lower than the other... so I know it can be annoying. Your machine is still under warranty so have them check it out.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 Backlight Keyboard Not Working?! Software Problem...

So my "MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011" backlight keyboard hasn't been working. I have tried LabTick today, doesn't fix anything. Even in high or low lighting situations (dispite the Adjust keyboard brightness in low light being off) doesn't like to go on. It doesn't give me a circle with a cross like it does with that box checked in day light. It shows on the screen the
16 dots fully light after hitting F6 fully, just it doesn't light up. I one time had to reset my Mac OS at the Apple Store, it fixed the problem, but when I restored with a time machine backup, it went back to this software problem. How can I fix this?! What is wrong with my OS? Mountain Lion? How can I fix this?!

If it does not detect the display automatically, try going to system preferences>displays, click detect displays.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • LED Backlight Keyboard not working

I downloaded OSX Mountain Lion in August of 2013 and immeidately after downloading it, my LED backlight keyboard option completely disappeared off of the Keyboard Preferences. There's a blank spot where the LED backlight keyboard settings should be. The F5 and F6 LED keyboard keys are also unresponsive. Is there anyway to fix this? Or do I need to take it in and get a new keyboard? I am currently operating OS X Mavericks 10.9.

  • 2006 Macbook Pro 17 inch duo 2 core backlight keyboard not working

I have a Macbook Pro 17 inch model MA611 L/A 2.33 duo 2 core.  I recently had to change the hard drive and when I put everything back, the backlit keyboard is not coming on.  I have reseted the SMC, downloaded labtick, and can see F9 and F10 light up and down setting on the keyboard.
It's not coming on.  I double check to make sure that the keyboard ribbon is on securely.  The keyboard is working as I am typing this post on it.
Nothing seems to be a problem other than the backlit keyboard not coming on.  Is it possible that the LED light is broken even though everything on the keyboard works normally?
Am I missing something?  Anyone have experience like this?
Any help or clues would be appreciated.  It is really bothering me and is annoying not having this feature at night.

A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

  • Keyboard not illuminating?

Hello, I was using my macbook pro at night when I noticed that my keyboard wouldn't light up. I tried to manually turn on the keyboard illumination, but it didn't work. I look around and some said it was due to an update in the OS, and suggested to try using Lab Tick. However, this did not solve anything and my keyboard remains unlit. I had sent in my laptop a couple weeks ago due to harddrive problems. Is this a software based problem where it cannot send its command to the keyboard, or is this a hardware problem, possibly something happened when it was sent in for the harddrive repair? Your help would be truly appreciated, as I would not like to make another trip to the apple store, which would make my 6th appointment on problems with my macbook pro. Any kind of suggestion and/or advice would be awesome. Thanks

If LabTick cannot turn the keyboard backlight on, it is quite likely hardware. One way to rule out settings/software would be to create a new user account, log in as that user, and see if the problem persists. If so, looks like it's back to the Apple Store, unfortunately.

If this is a new laptop, I think I would either get ahold of MSI for warranty support or return it to the store you bought it from for repair or replacement.
it is new but it has now no warranty because i have open the under hdd.
And now i have a another problem. .!
the battery was at 6% so I went charging.
it says that the battery is charging but remains at 1%, and if I disconnect the adapter from the laptop, the laptop goes shutdown.
Without the adapter the laptop will not open.

  • MBP keyboard permanently illuminated

    Hi there.
Sorry if this question has already been answered. I've searched the forums but can only find stuff related to keyboards not illuminating.
My problem is that regardless of the ambient light conditions my keyboard is permanently illuminated. The F5 and F6 keys work as they should, but the keyboard does not respond to the ambient light. So if I turn the brightness right down so that the keys aren't lit at all, when it goes dark they don't light up. And if I crank the brightness right up when it's dark, they don't dim again when it gets light. I'd like to be able to set it, say, half way and have the sensor control when it is and isn't lit.
The screen does dim when I cover the iSight camera so I don't think that's the problem. The keyboard is set to respond to the ambient light in the System Prefs.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Scott,
I'm not trying that again! When it restarted I got the flashing folder with question mark. I'd never seen that before so I just held down the power button til it powered down and I restarted as normal. I looked it up on the Apple website, found out what it means (can't find startup disk) and followed their advice to reset the PRAM. Except they said to hold cmd-opt-P-R until the second chime. So I did that only for the flashing folder to appear again.
This time I stuck in the install DVD and ran Disk Utility to repair the disk. I restarted as normal and there are no problems (so far), but the keyboard issue remains!
    Thanks anyway,

  • Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions box is missing under keyboard preferences and my keyboard backlight is not lit. Any help?

"illuminate keyboard in low light conditions " box is missing under keyboard preferences and my keyboard backlight is not lit.
    Any help?

Did you used to have the option?  I did, and when my keyboard backlight stopped working, I followed instructions on 'Resetting the System Management Controller' http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.  After I did that, the menu option completely disappeared, and I can't get it back.
I have the 2010 MacBook Pro (Intel), it used to work, but since moving to Lion, it hasn't, and now the option is gone altogether.

  • I updated, but now my keyboard backlight will not work. Any suggestions?

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to OSX 10.8.4, but now my keyboard backlight does not work and there is nothing I can find in the Keyboard section of preferences to turn it back on. Anyone else had this problem?

One of these steps should help.
    1. Restart.
    2. Press F6 key couple of times.
    3. System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard
Uncheck the box next to "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light"

  • Backlight keyboard at my classic does not work

    Dear all,
i have purchased before 2 months the BB Classic..last week a small red light appears at the top left of the device, what is this? at the same time the backlight keyboard does not turn on while i am at dark enviroment.
please advise me if there is any way to fix it...
    thanks
    constantinos

The small red light sounds like the proximity sensor. You would normally see this when the phone app is open.
If you haven't done so yet, try just rebooting the device. If you are using a screen protector, remove it and test. If problem persists, use BBVE to test the proximity and light sensors. For more information see http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB35531

  • GS60 Ghost Pro - Some parts of Steel Keyboard are not illuminated

    Hi,
I bought myself a GS60 2PE Ghost Pro a couple of days ago. The Keyboard illumination was working fine at first, but today I noticed that some parts of my Steel Keyboard are not illuminated anymore. My laptop was updated by Windows Update Manager, so I thought it had something to do with newly installed updates. But I did a full system recovery with F3 and the keyboard is still not illuminated properly.
Any ideas what can fix this issue?

I have checked out the GS60 2PC (same generation as yours) and I saw what you mean.
I didn't notice this before when I tested the GS60 models.
When looking at the keyboard on smaller angle (<70°) you can see there is less light coming from the F1, F7, F8, F9, F11, TAB, CAPS, SHIFT, ENTER and Numpad keys.
The amount of light that is visible below the keys isn't consistent everywhere and that seems to suggest that the keyboard back-lighting isn't working properly at those keys.
Looking below the F7, F8, F9 keys, I see that only the top left part of the key is illuminated, while other keys (i.e. F2..F6) are also illuminated on the right part of the key.
I have checked with our R&D department and this is a design choice.
The F2..F6 keys have a symbol in the top-left and the bottom-right part of the key and the F1, F7..F9, F11 only have a symbol in the top-left, which doesn't require lighting in the lower right part of the key.
This also applies to the bigger keys (TAB, CAPS, SHIFT, ENTER and Numpad keys), only the center of the key where the symbol resides is illuminated.
When looking at the keyboard in dim/dark rooms the keyboard back-lighting works as expected and keys can easily be identified because the symbol on the key lights up.
I hope the attached pictures clarify the situation (It isn't easy to capture the real effect with a simple digital camera. The situation in the pictures actually look worse than viewing it in real life).
    P.S.,
More pictures and a video in the attached Zip file.
The video might show the situation the best.

  • Backlight keyboard stopped working after updating to snow leopard

Hi I have a late 2008 macbook pro. When I got the laptop it had 10.5.8 on it and the keyboard backlight was working fine. I dimmed it all the way down to save battery life. Later on I installed 10.6.2 then did an update to 10.6.5. I don't know where it stopped working allong the way but the keyboard backlight no longer works.
I can turn it up using the f keys. It will increase and decrease. There is not a circle with a line through it like I have read that other users have had when their backlight is not working properly.
I can increase it and decrease it. The light never comes on. I have installed that program that lets you control the backlight by putting it in the taskbar, that doesnt fix it. I called apple and reset the SMC by taking the battery out and holding the power button down for 5 seconds then putting the battery back in and turning it back on. That did not fix it. I also asked if there was some preference files that we could throw away to maybe reset it. We tossed about 5 files and that didnt fix it - sorry I cant remember the files. I did a fresh install of snow leopard but i didnt go past the "would you like to bring back your files" part of the install.
Can someone help me? The caps lock button lights up. I dont know if that matters. Please help me fix the backlight on my keyboard. I really dont want to install 10.5.8 again just to see if the light comes back on or not. Is there a bug in snow leopard that messes up my macbook? help!

maybe its fried ? could be just bad luck when you were doing the update ?
    Ridiculous!
    To the OP:
I'd recommend doing a SMC reset, if that doesn't take care of it do a PRAM reset. The instructions are:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
