Backlight on macbook pro stopped working

Hi,
I am new to apple, I purchased a second hand macbook pro 15" recently (1.83Ghz 2GB Ram, 220GB HDD). I'm pretty sure it has the most recent vesion of Leopard (cannot confirm). The only real issue with it was the battery life (about 15mins)
anyway, I recplaced the battery yesterday... when I tried to turn the machine on the screen lights up "as normal" I get the apple startup chime.... but then the screen just goes dark.. You can kind of see the desktop and windows etc if you tilt the screen toward the light but there is zero backlighting. I tried the F1 & F2 keys, nothing :-/
I plugged my PC monitor into the DVI port and it works fine. So, I managed (with great difficulty) to get the system prefs open and onto the secondary monitor. When I click "displays" it just hangs with the spinning rainbow cursor and never actually opens the display preferences.
To make matters worse I thought I'd try starting the computer from the OSX leopard DVD... which worked, but still no backlight whatsoever. So it's in DVD boot mode now... cannot seam to eject the disc either.
Yes, I tried with the old battery... no love
I'm happy to take it in to get fixed if I have to... But I'm wondering if anyone knows what is going on with it, or if there is something I've done to it..
Cheers
Dan

Welcome to Apple Discussions and the world of Mac. Hopefully subsequent experiences will be better than your initial one.
It sounds like the second hand MBP has an inverter problem. The inverter is a high voltage circuit that powers the fluorescent lamp that backlights the LCD display. That kind of failure is a hardware failure so a repair will be required.
Since you have an external monitor, do you also have a USB mouse and keyboard? If you do, you can use the MBP with the lid closed with all those external peripherals attached and it should make controlling the Mac easier without the internal display working. Just attach the external monitor, mouse and keyboard and the MBP's power adapter and hit the start button on the MBP and then immediately close the lid on the MBP. That should cause the internal screen to stay off and only the external screen to be used. Alternately, if the MBP is already running, if you close the lid, it should go to sleep. Then, keep the lid down, and hit the space bar on the external keyboard and that should wake the MBP up with only the external screen active. The power adapter needs to remain attached to the MBP for the above the work. Good luck.

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,

I would do another SMC reset. If nothing changes you should take the computer in to an Apple store for a free diagnostic. You should make an appointment.

  • USB ports in my macbook pro stop working

For a few months now the USB ports in my Macbook Pro stop working. The mouse is unable to move the pointer, therefore, I have to use the trackpad to select things. Then, when i try to shut it down it refuses to shut down, so I have to hold the on/off button to turn it off. When I turn on the laptop, the problem goes away. It's been happening more often for the last few weeks. Is there a problem with the software or is it the fact that I never used a base to raise the laptop, until recently, to let air in below so it doesnt heat up so much?
    Any help is appreciated.

my macbook pro stopped working when i was out of town. i took it to an apple certified repairing store and they told me that as my waranty period was over 1 month back i have to pay 800-900$ to repair it. I would like to know if I buy an apple care now will it still cover the repairing cost?
I also need to know what are the different repairings are supported by apple care.

    Hey AbdullahAbudiak
It would be hard to determine that at this point, but check out the articles below to get you going on isolating if it is hardware or software.

  • Why did my MacBook Pro stopped working

    Hey,
Yesterday my MacBook Pro stopped working (got stuck on the opening screen with the spinning wheel)
I fixed it..but my question is what made it do this?
    Thanks,

Oh - your profile shows 10.8 - which is Mountain Lion.
There's no telling what could cause a one-time event like that - could be any number of things - but if it happens again, call back.

  • The volume keys on my MacBook Pro stop working after using headphones.

The volume keys on my MacBook Pro recently stopped controling the volume after I've used headphones. I still have sound; I just can't make the volume increase or decrease. The mute, however, still works just fine. Because I have sound from the intenral speakers I know the computer doesn't think the headphones are still in the jack. A reboot fixes the problem, but as soon as I use headphones the problem starts up again. I want to fix this permanently.
I don't know if this helps but all the other keys (brightness, play/pause, etc) still work. I recently had to reset the PRAM because my computer refused to sleep when the lid was shut. I've checked system preferences and everything seems to be in order.
    Can someone please help!?

I found this advice on another thread after encountering the same problem - I did the reboot and it worked fine and dandy!
I spoke with Applecare to fix my Macbook volume. Apparently there are pins inside the speaker/headphone jack that can get jammed. We fixed mine by doing some sort of reboot:
    Turn off laptop.
Hold down the Option, Command, P, and R keys (all four at once, it's tricky!) and while holding down the four keys, turn on the computer. When you hear the second chime, release the four keys.
This re-set the sound toggle to internal speakers. Now I'm afraid to insert headphones again, but I assume this reboot will work over and over.

  • Keyboard backlight for MacBook Pro not working after update.

So I had an update for my Mac pop up yesterday, I completed the update and all was fine. I've just turned on my MacBook Pro again today and there's no backlights on the keyboard. I've tried adjusting it using the F5 and F6 keys but nothing happens other than a pop up on the screen (Pic attatched below) any ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks. :-)
    PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED! :-)

It is not my fault, Apple updates problem
They should solve it fir me without make any payment
    Thanks

Try starting your computer holding down the option key as soon as you hear the startup sound, and continue holding it. Hopefully, you will see the icon for your startup disk come up on your screen within a minute. Click on that icon and press return. If your machine starts up normally from there, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reselect your startup volume

  • Macbook Pro stopped working after installing updates

My friend has exactly the same macbook as I do, a few hours ago he did some software updates (more then 10). After his macbook restarted it go stuck in the grey screen with the apple logo. After 15minutes it automatically restarted again, and it keeps doing that...
We've tried safe mode boot, PRAM, and all the other stuff but nothing works. We're on vacation so we don't have the installation DVDs.
    What should we do?
    Thanks.

    Hello faab:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I am afraid to indicate that you probably will need to wait until you are back and have the software install DVD.
There is really no way to tell what happened. To fix it, however, you really need the DVDs.

  • My macbook air stopped working suddenly and started beeping no backlight ...just beeping

my macbook air stopped working...and started beeping...how do I recover...no backlight ....just beeping

three beeps in a row?  That indicates the RAM is bad on the logic board.
verify the scheme of the beeps and report back.
3 beeps = RAM is bad
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
