Backlighting stays on

I tried different power management options in Windows and also tried disabling the keyboard manager startup item in msconfig, but no effect.

I had the same issue with the screen brightness/backlighting.  The first thing I did was to make sure that the automatic brightness control that uses an ambient light sensor to adjust the brightness was turned off.  I did this by going into the control panel on the desktop and selecting Power Options.  It will display the different power modes and on the right is an option to "change plan settings."  Click on that for the power mode that you are in and then click "change advanced power settings" at the bottom of the window.  Scroll down and click "Display" and then "Enable adaptive brightness" and turn it off.
Doing that kept the display from changing due to the ambient light but the backlighting would still change by itself, especially when switching between light and dark images, which sounds like what might be happening to you.  I found a fix for the Yoga 13 that seems to fix this problem.  Right click on the desktop and select "intel graphics properties."  Select the "on battery" tab and turn off "Display Power Saving Technology."  It seems like this attempts to reduce power consumption by adjusting the backlighting depending on what's being displayed but I found it extremely irritating.
Hope this helps you out!

  • Request for feature. Backlight stays on as long as thumb is on clickwheel

Just a small request from me, please reply if you feel this is a feature that you would like.
The ipod classic has the ability to detect whether you're thumb is currently on or off the clickwheel. (ie. placing your thumb on the clickwheel causes the backlight to turn on)
I request that the backlight stay on as long as the thumb is detected as being on the clickwheel.
I hate it when I'm browsing through my music and the backlight switches off because I haven't scrolled through a list in a while.
It should be a pretty quick fix for the next firmware.
    Thanks for listening
    -Cuppo

Like I said, it's a very small feature request that has an easy workaround, but also a very easy code fix.
But to me, this seems like the most intuitive backlighting scheme.
-Turn on backlight when thumb is on.
-Turn off backlight when thumb is off for 2 seconds.
(The 2 seconds accounts for the user lifting up the thumb to reposition it on the clickwheel)

  • Backlight stays on whilst connected to computer - iPod Classic 120GB

    Hey all,
Just curious about this, when the iPod is connected to my Mac, the backlight comes on but does not dim. On my 2nd Generation iPod Nano, once you connect it the backlight only stays on for a few seconds. Is this normal with the new iPod classics? The iPod screen simply reads 'Connected - Eject before disconnecting'.
    Cheers!

have the same unit and the previous version, 80GB, and both behave the same.
I would think of this as a "feature" just reminding you that the unit is plugged or synchronizing and you should eject it before disconnection.

  • M72e Monitor backlight stays on

I have 40 M72e computers that are about 1 year old. All but 1 are fine. This one machine refuses to turn off the monitor backlight. When the display goes to sleep, I see the backlight go off, then come back on within 1 second and stay on for 15-30 seconds This cycle then repeats indefinitely. Even if the computer is off this cycle continues. I have swapped monitors to ensure that the fault lies with the computer. At this point I'm leaning towards putting in a call to have the motherboard replaced. Is this a known issue? If so where can I find information about it?

    fortunately, you're correct......
I bit the bullet and spent about 20 minutes in queue for apple support. and low and behold as it's only 4 months since I have had it, they'll replace it. They're sending me a box to ship it back, so wish me luck that everything goes seemless from here....phone customer service is VERY good so far, matthew in charlottetown was very informative. BUT some observations for the website:
    (1) The "limited" warranty as quoted when I typed in the serial #, should be far more clear as to what the limited warranty is. It implies that I shouldn't expect much, and more so when you push the applecare warranty in your face. It should be easier to get specifics then for me to call them. details shoild be given at that point.
    (2) The support # I found on the website for support is also vague. No times for call are given for one, the blurb above the # implies that this is ONLY for people looking for free tech support, and I was resistant to call because my 1 free tech support call within 90 days expired. I called thinking that what the ****, the worst they can do is nothing, and was pleasantly surprised. More clarification on the website as to why you can call in the first place (similar to the phone prompts when you call) is certainly needed.
working around professional audio gear, some of which is 50 years old, I forget that most of that stuff is built to be repaired, while the major of consumer electronics today is very disposable. It is cheaper buying a new DVD player, ipod, etc then having it worked on. for computers, you just replace a card, motherboard, etc. indeed, what I have seen of ipods apart on websites, they're just a board with a screen...nothing to them, they're built to have the components replaced. ipods certainly fall into that catagory.

  • Can i fix my ipod classic if the backlight stays on but there's no display?

I just bought a used 6th generation ipod classic and it turns on but the screen stays white. Is there any way to repair this?

If it shows up in iTunes, select it in the sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  Do a Restore from there.  This will erase the iPod's hard drive, install the latest software, and set it to default settings.  When it restarts, see if there is any improvement.
If it's the same, there is probably a way to repair it, by replacing whatever component is broken.  Depending on who does the work (you or a "pro"), and what needs to be done, it may or may not be an economical fix.

  • How do I get the backlight to stay on, when connected to charger / external power ?

    Hi,
Is there a way of setting the backlight on my 8900 Curve so that when it is connected to the USB or Mains charger,
( and therefore not draining the battery ) the backlight stays on ?
I can only find settings in Options / Screen/Keyboard, which I have set to leave the backlight on for 90 seconds, and dim automatically ?
Obviously I don't want to leave the backlight on for longer than necessary when it is NOT connected to external power,.
I was hoping that there are either some separate settings that I haven't discovered,
which only apply when connected to external power, or failing that maybe an App that will do the job ???
    Thanks,
If you found my answer ( or anyone else's ) to be helpful, don't forget to click the Kudos button !

When you first plug your phone in, it should go to the clock and that does stay lit. Other than that, there is no way to set the phone so that balcklight stays on.

  • Firmware causes backlight to stay lit?

Just updated to the 1.2.1 firmware from 1.0 and my backlight does not shut off when plugged into my laptop. Is anyone else having this problem or should I just go back to 1.0 haha?
The reason I've been running 1.0 up till now is because 1.1 was a joke and f'ed up my iPod, so i downgraded and it's worked fine since(until now).

This question is not answered as far as I'm concerned. Having the backlight stay on while plugged into my Macs is unacceptable. I do not want the life of the display shortened because it stays lit for the hours I take charging it.
The iPod only stays lit when connected to my iMac and Powerbook. I bought a wall charger and when I plug it in there, it goes out.
And no, the answer is not "just use the wall charger" because I would rather have it connected to my computer so I can work with my library any time I wish.
I love Apple but this feature is a mistake. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

  • No backlight on MacBook. Please help?

    Hello, friends.
I just got home and tried to wake my (white 2008) MacBook from sleep, as i left it before i was gone. Problem is, after i open the lid, there is no backlight whatsoever. I can still see what's on the display if i bring a light source directly to it, but i still can't get any backlight. I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC and after that i got about 2 or 3 seconds of full backlight when i booted, but after that, the screen goes dark again, although it boots and i can see my desktop with the wallpaper and everything with the help of a light source.
What do you think it can be? Could it be a matter of software? Or, more likely, as i presume, a hardware problem? I don't think the display is the problem, because clearly the backlight works, i can see full brightness for a couple of seconds almost every time i boot up and everything else that i have on my desktop. Could it be a loose cable inside or a battery problem? I'm gonna take it to an Apple store and see what's with it tomorrow, but maybe you can help me before i do that.
The MB wasn't even touched while i was gone, so i find it hard to believe that a cable or connection simply broke free inside there, by itself, or just by opening the lid.
Thank you kindly, for any help.
    Vincent

    Hello, Marcio.
I went to a local Apple service and they told me it was a problem with the wires. The display has some wires connecting it to the rest of the computer and, apparently, they melted in some places.
The guys there told me that Apple service is not authorized to repair it, but only to change the entire screen. And that costs me about $400. I refused to pay such amount and went home.
It's where i noticed that if you put the display to no brightness/light at all and then back to brightness, the display will stay on for a long time. A short time at first, but now i've come to do that once and the backlight stays on even for days without turning off.
Try it, play with the brightness - minimum level to a few lines and see how it goes

  • Acer D255E backlight issues during boot

Having an issue with the backlight during the boot process of my netbook. Screen will go blank for 10-15 seconds before returning. This wouldn't be an issue, but it's sitting on the login screen for a good 5-10 seconds so I'd rather fix it.
This is not a KMS issue, it's the backlight. I can append "nomodeset" to the kernel line and it will still occur. If I shine a flashlight at the screen, I can still see the boot text scrolling.
Checking dmesg, the most interesting line is:
[ 6.387788] acer_wmi: Brightness must be controlled by acpi video driver
I've tried blacklisting that module with no noticeable change. I've also tried several different acpi options such as "acpi_backlight=video", "acpi_backlight=vendor", and the same with "acpi_display_output". "acpi=ht" doesn't work, however with "acpi=off" this no longer occurs (not a solution though).

Really puzzled by this one. I've tried playing around with a ton of different acpi options. Only acpi=off prevents this from happening. Also tried upgrading my BIOS to the latest version. Tried several different distros and they all had the same issue, so it's not specific to Arch.
I've noticed the backlight stays off for exactly 10 seconds as if there is a 10 second timeout. If I could figure out where that is, might be possible to just lower the timeout.

  • Screen not blanking properly (Backlight doesn't turn off)

I've been facing a weird problem lately. Whenever I leave my laptop on for a while when I'm logged on in X (I use KDE), the screen turns off after 10 minutes. All well and good. But whenever the laptop idle when logged on to a virtual console, after 15 minuites of idling, the display blanks, but the backlight stays on. The display becomes a wall of white. Is there any way to make the backlight switch off as well along with the screen blanking? I'm not using pm-utils or acpid to manage power on the virtual console right now. I'm using the logind.conf defaults.

For future reference, don't assume that people will see your signature.  Not only do most people disregard signatures, but there is the ability to turn off the signatures in your user settings.

  • LCD stay lit while docked?

    Hi all,
I've noticed that when my 160GB is docked and I'm either syncing or have the iPod set to manual, the LCD stays lit. Is this happening to everyone else? When the iPod is set to manuyal is when we need the clock screensaver.
BTW, when playing music, it would be nice if there was an option to have the LCD go to minimum brightness instead of turning off. This wasn't a problem with my iPod Photo but what that LCD turns off it is almost impossible to see any text. I hope the backlight of my classic doesn't stop working like my iPod Photo's backlight did.
    Thanks,
    Steven

I believe that "feature" was added in the second go around of the 5th generation iPods where when plugged in and syncing or mounted as a drive, the backlight stays on all the time but at minimum brightness.
As to your second comment, you can set the LCD backlight to the minimum yourself then set the backlight timer to always on.

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

    Louie -
I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.
Is there a time setting for sleep mode on close?

  • Nokia 808 / running slow, backlight doesn't come o...

    Hi folks
    Have a 808, updated.
Problem is, that sporadically, the backlight doesnt come off. Phone locks itself correctly, but stays lit.
I have to remove the battery for prolongued time, till it resets itself. I know it resets, when i need to put the time and date in on startup.
Also sometimes it starts to respond really slow, without too many programs being in the background.
Just recently it first became slow, then the backlight stayed lit.
First, I thought that CAR MODE got somehow stuck, because this mode doesn't let the phone to lock or turn illumination off.
I stopped using car mode, but just recently, the phone stood lit again, just after taking a photo.
Also, sometimes, with Sports Tracker, it doesn't find satellites, and I have to restart the phone, which solves the problem.
On occasion, nokia drive doesn't engage, restarting helps.
Biggest problem is, that these issues are becoming more and more often.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi denisWR,
For date and time, turn on automatic time update in time and date settings.
For backlight issue, restart the phone and immediately try locking the phone with side lock key one or more times.
For improved performance, I recommend you to uninstall autostarting and unwanted applications.
When the phone the starts, it will be slow in the beginning and after a minute or two, it should work normal speed.
For gps issue, make sure that position method are properly set, there should be at least 4 out of 5 should be marked except blutooth gps which is optional.
You should be able to find postioning methods in settings-application settings-Positioning-find my location-positioning methods.
Also see, settings -application settings-map apps-maps and walk-backlight, here you might wanto set it to System default.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backlight continuously on, PLEASE help

This might seem like a simple question, but where does one switch off the back light? My 9300's backlight stays on all the time, which results in the battery power running down VERY QUICKLY. Can someone please assist? Your help will be appreciated. Thanx.

    1. Turn off your phone, leave your battery and SIM out for 5-10minutes and put everything back in and turn it on .
    2. Restore factory settings: type *#7780# at the standby screen. Enter 12345 for the security code or the one you've changed it to.
Before you try the next two steps, backup your phone memory using PC Suite.
    3. Soft reset: This will clean up your phone memory. All user data, applications etc stored in the phone memory will be destroyed. Type *#7370#. Enter the security code when prompted; default is 12345.
    4. Hard reset: This is the last resort. The effect will be the same as that of a soft reset. Turn off your phone, press and hold down these keys: the call (Green) button, '*', '3'. Turn on your phone without releasing them. Leave the keys only after you see the region selection screen.
    Cheers,
    DeepestBlue
