Backpack Recommendations?

I'd like to get a backpack for my 15" MacBook Pro. I'm looking for something on the slimmer side and lightweight that would hold power cords, a couple of small accessories (Apple Modem, remote, flash drive, AirPort Express, and a small external drive), an iPod Classic, a couple of software back-up discs, a notepad, and a couple of pens. I've been looking at the Brenthaven Metrolite BP-XF. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have a blue Fishpond Barcelona backpack. I had a very nice Oakley laptop bag I was already using, when I won the Fishpond in a drawing at work. I didn't really need another laptop bag, but after using the Fishpond for a while, I totally converted to it and haven't looked back. I love it! This is the best laptop bag I've ever had (and I have gone through a few trying to find the perfect one).
It has a padded laptop compartment and is sized for a 15". It is a pretty big bag when full, but it has compression straps on the sides, so if you aren't carrying a lot you can make it smaller, but I've found that I often need the full size pack and I like that versatility of size. It has a LOT of interior pockets making it easy to keep things organized. The inside is a different contrasting, lighter color which makes it easy to find things. Aside from the laptop, I routinely carry a spare battery, a mouse, a couple of ExpressCards, travel plugs, my iPod shuffle, a wallet, some pens and a writing pad, a power supply and a Kensington lock and that doesn't use up even a fraction of the possible space, but when compressing it to fit these items, it is still a very slim profile.
It also isn't a typical laptop bag in that it has brighter colors and a funky patterned trim (which I love), so it doesn't advertise that you're carrying a Mac like some of the more "reserved" black/gray laptop bags do.

  • Campus backpack recommendations

I need a laptop backpack for college (incoming freshman). It needs to have a lot of organizational pockets for my cables, external drive, pens and pencils even, and my headphones. It also must fit and adequately protect my 15 inch mbp. The mbp has a speck shell and a sleeve on it already, but more protection is better right? So in addition to this, my backpack must fit typical things like textbooks, notebooks, and binders. And I'd prefer this dream backpack to not have the look of a laptop bag, if that makes sense. If any of you have ideas, please let me know because I need to order this bag soon! thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Targus and International Luggage both make very good backpacks, and both can be found in malls and/or office supplies stores. LL Bean is another good place to get bags. Whatever bag you get:
    1. Do not run around with the machine turned on! Yes, sleep in theory is safe, but various programs have been known to wake up the machine unpredictably while traveling. This can create an overheating condition very quickly.
    2. The padding should be soft on all six sides.
    3. The padding should have liner protecting it so no small particulates get inside the padding. These if they get in the latch, keyboard the ports, or the optical drive can cause those areas to malfunction.
    4. Don't put anything inside the padding except the notebook itself. Weight of other items can cause the screen to jam into the keyboard, and that's an expensive repair.
    5. Keep the power brick in its own zip lock bag and do not wrap around the L shaped ends. In spite of the advertising material online, it is very easy to fray the power cable if bumped the wrong way when the cable is wrapped around the L shaped ends.
    6. Test the bag with normal items expected to carry before buying if at all possible, or be aware of the store's return policy to be able to test it if you receive it by mail. You should understand how to operate the straps so that it doesn't hurt your back.

  • How do I create a Persona account for my Open Badges Backpack when I never receive the email link to my account?

I enter the email address and password for a new Persona account for my Backpack. All the information is accepted. The screen tells me to access my account through the link sent to my email. The email is never received.
Yes, my email service provider has gone through all their inbound logs and check all spam blocking areas. They have watched the logs for all incoming email messages while I perform the sign up process and see nothing from Mozilla or Persona.
Please recommend next steps. Thank you.

Hi so persona is no longer supported. Please contact the administrator that has implemented persona in the portion of the site you are using it. For example, if you are on the badges page
Here are all the issuers of badges [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Badges/Issuers] and the infrastructure of the [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Badges/Technology authentication process]
If you open up a web console and go thorough the process you can check on the final stage in the error logger if there are any errors on the ui's end. For example, if there is a 302 redirect or 500 server error, this will be the server responsible for the authentication responsible for the issue.
I hope this puts you in the right direction.

  • Case Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a protective case for the 13inch macbook? The tucano sleeve seems to only protect it from scratches but is there anything out there that would protect it from light bumps and such. I don't want to buy a laptop bag--I want to be able to carry my macbook in a backpack or tote bag, but I wanted to make sure it is protected.

If you're feeling crafty, you could easily sew one yourself using an old T-Shirt. There was an article in the most recent MAKE: magazine with instructions on how to turn an old T-shirt into a very functional laptop case. You're probably looking for a "Sleeve" of sorts.
If you're not up for that, then something like the MacBook sleeve found here http://www.mac-case.com/MacCase%20Sleeves.htm
    Might be helpful.

  • Please recommend a good sleeve for the pismo

    Hi,
Can any of you loving pismo owners please recommend a good sleeve for our beloved pismos. I'm looking for one that would fit the pismo pretty much like a glove, so it won't slide and then I can put the pismo in an another bag.
Thanks so much for your suggestions!

I bought a perfect sleeve for mine from Timbuktu. This was a few years ago and I'm not sure they carry it anymore (look on eBay?). I see that the manufacturer makes other sleeves that look nice, too, now. Mine fits the laptop like a glove. It's open at the top with two cloth-padded handles and a strap that snaps into place over the middle of the opening. The padding is nice and thick -- about 1/2." I lugged it in my backpack all around Europe for a summer and it came through just fine.

  • Recommendations for travel setup please

Thinking of a European trip with lots of indoor usage in museums, churches and such where allowed as well as normal walk-around usage and landscapes. Would love to keep the equipment list to a minimum of course. Concerns are mostly indoor shots where flashes are not allowed. Not adverse to purchasing an additional lens or different camera body if that is what is needed for a once in a lifetime trip.
    Current equipment is an EOS 60D, EF 15 Fisheye, EFS 10-22 F3.5-4.5, EFS 18-135 F3.5-5.6, EF 24-70 F2.8L II, EF 70-300 F4-5.6L IS.
What range would be most useful in large cathedrals and such without a flash? Thinking the 24-70 by itself would not have enough reach for some shots but it is wonderful in low light. My 70-300L is absolutely fantastic but not great in low light. Would you recommend I get the 70-200 F2.8 to pair up with the 24-70 for travel? Would I be better off purchasing a full frame camera like the 5D for it's low light abilities with my current lenses? Just stick with the kit 18-135 lens and put up with high ISO noise indoors? Thinking of taking my monopole instead of a tripod.
Any input from experienced travelers as to what worked best?

If it were me, for travel I'd take the 60D, 10-22mm and 18-135mm. Then I'd probably add one or two or a few reasonably fast prime lenses for low light/shallow depth of field purposes, choosing among 20/2.8, 24/2.8 IS, 28/1.8, 35/2 IS, 50/1.4, and 85/1.8. I'd also take a flash, since it will likely be useable at times. Monopod might be a nice option, too.
I have traveled by air within the past year with 5DII (w/grip), 20/2.8, 24-70, 28/1,8, 50/1.4, 135/2, 70-200/2.8, 300/4, 1.4X and one 580EX II. That and the accessories I use with the kit add up to approx. 25 lb. backpack (that does fit in an airline overhead compartment). That wasn't fun getting through the airport, but doable and I wasn't going to be walking around a whole lot with it otherwise.
It's different when only traveling by car. Then I take a ton of stuff. Lots of lenses, 3 to 6 cameras, two tripods, and more. Sometimes even location lighting gear (five monolights, stands, umbrellas, etc.).
Another option is to ship some stuff ahead. I've shipped my location lighting kit cross country on occasion. Wouldn't want to try to take it with me on an airline! It's in a large roller bag and weighs 85-90 lbs.
If I were going somewhere that support, repair and rentals weren't likely to be available, i might ship a spare camera and other gear ahead, to meet me there. Not likely to be a problem in England. But I prefer to keep at least a primary kit of gear with me and under my control. A monopod can go in a checked bag. But only carry on flashes, lenses, cameras, etc. If necessary, I'll wear a photographers vest to stash small items.

  • Camera Bag Recommendation

What would you recommend for a camera bag for this type of digital slr camera & lens ? :

    Hey TechGirl,
There are many choices when it comes to camera bags, and deciding on what one meets your needs really depends on a few different things. I first suggest thinking about what type of environment you will be using the camera in. If you are going to be trekking all over the world, and exposing the camera to harsh conditions, I would suggest getting at least a durable water resistant bag. If you're going to use the camera primarily in your home and occasionally take it out of the house you could probably get by with a less durable bag that isn't water resistant. The next thing you should consider is do you anticipate carrying a lot of lenses, and accessories with you, or will it primarily be just the camera with a lens on it.
The four types of camera bags are a hard case, backpack, shoulder bag, and what's called a holster style bag. Hard cases are more for checking the camera when you travel, while a backpack would be used if you would be traveling on foot with a large amount of equipment. The shoulder bag is the most common, because it allows you to carry a good amount of equipment without being cumbersome. The holster style bag holds just the camera body with a lens attached, but they usually are limited to what size lens will fit in it.
There are a few bags I found that I feel would work well for this camera package, but by no means are these your only options. There is a shoulder bag that is made by Canon for their EOS series of cameras, and they also make a good holster style bag. If you are in need of a lot of room, and would like a backpack style bag Lowepro makes a good backpack. I hope this is helpful!

  • Brenthaven - a recommendation

Several threads ask about the best backpack or bag or whatever for your Mac portable device.
I want to give a glowing recommendation for anything from Brenthaven.
I got my first Brenthaven backpack at the same time I got my (then) brand new 15" G4 Titanium PowerBook !
I am still using that backpack.
About a week ago, I noticed that a seam had begun to let go at the top of the bag.
Checking Brenthaven's web site, it says that products carry a LIFETIME WARRANTY and that they will repair or replace any product..
So I contact them, sending pictures of the blown seam in my 10 year old backpack.
I am told, in response, that the blown seam cannot be repaired, and that to honor the warranty, they offer me my choice of a replacement backpack of similar size/shape for only a $15 shipping/handling cost, or a one-time 80% discount on my choice of any Brenthaven product.
    Wow.
Let me repreat that: Wow !
Spread the word: "Brenthaven quality" is right up there with "Apple quality"

What backpack do you have now? And is it waterproof? I'm looking to get a new one but the weather is so unpredictable so need it to stop my MBP from getting soaked

  • Backpack for High School

I am entering high school this september, and I was hoping that someone could recommend a good backpack. I am looking for one that looks good,  has a compartment for my Macbook Pro I recently purchased as I plan on using it in school, has plenty of room for carrying textbooks and notebooks.
    Thanks for any help!

What type of school are you going for; what are the requirements you are going to be allowed to run. How long are you keeping the iPad?
If it's light use and only for research purposes, a low GB would be fine
If you plan to use it to store content and school related infomation a 32 may be needed
If you need to create videos; or store larger files 64GB
128? That's heavy use....Need more details on WHAT YOU need.

  • Recommend a good bag for a 15" Mac Book Pro

I wasn't quite sure where to post this question...
I will be getting the 15" MacBook Pro very soon, and would like to get a bag for it. Can anyone recommend a REALLY good laptop bag? I am not looking for a backpack. I would like to get a messenger type bag, but nothing too huge, just something larger enough for the computer and a notebook or two. Or maybe a sling type bag.
    Thanks

I'm enjoying very much my 15" laptop bag/portable desk from Higher Ground.
I find this bag useful since you need not remove your laptop to use it. Your MBP sits up on rubber feet to allow air to pass underneath it and the bottom of the bag is reinforced and stiff so you could situate it on your lap or on any desk. Simply, unzip the case and open it as if you were opening the lid on your MBP. It has sufficient padding and velcro straps to firmly anchor your MBP.
There is one large external pocket and a series of internal pockets for CD's. It's not overly roomy for extra gear, but you can get your adapter stowed and several file folders. It can be carried by shoulder strap or simply like a briefcase.

  • 11" MacBook Air backpack?

I know how difficult it is to find a good case for the 11" MBA because I've scoured the web, gone to several stores in two cities.  I finally found what I was looking for in the (almost) perfect Tom Bihn Ristretto (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0221).  I tried the SF Bags WaterField bag but it's too thin.  The Ristretto is perfect for my Air (in an Incase perforated hard shell case), my glasses, blue tooth logitech mouse and the AC adapter.  The only problem is this:  I'd like it to be able to wear it on my back.  Tom Bihn doesn't offer a backpack version.  And everything else that's a "backpack" is too big.  Any suggestions?

Being female, you're in luck Why? Well, because backpack purses work well for the 11". There might now be some backpacks for the 11", but when I searched for one some months back, all I could find were bulky backpacks for 13" laptops. There really weren't even backpacks for netbooks. There were over-the-shoulder bags as you've found, but not backpacks.
As I bought my 11" to slim down on what I carry, the last thing I wanted was a bulky backpack. So I started checking out backpack purses and that's what I recommend you look into as well. Though it might not be what you're after, I found my perfect backpack purse at The Quilted Monkey. Quilted and padded, exactly big enough but no bigger for my 11", it has a front pocket for the cord, pockets within for wallet and phone, and side/back storage for a little extra, but again, not much more. It has strong straps that keep it close to my back. The store had several patterns to choose from; I went for purple paisley.
The Quilted Monkey doesn't have a website, alas, but you can call them up and ask them about colors and patterns. It is the only backpack they have, so all you need to is ask about that one.
    Here's my purple paisley:

    Hi,
Before go out to buy a converter/transformer  (you need over 2KW for all 3 of them), please check the switches at the back, they may have switches to switch from 110V to 220V. I don't know your market, my suggestion: talk with an electrician who knows the real world much better.

  • How are Game Center "Friend Recommendations" people I know in real life? (Meetup/Facebook data?)

This seems like a major privacy concern, but mainly I'm just very curious how this can possibly happen:
The Game Center app suggests primarily people I have met in real life... but have had NO online interaction with!
I life in a high-population US city, yet at least 2/3 of my Friend Recommendations (maybe more if they had photos or knew these peoples' last names) are people I have actually MET in person and know vaguely... but who I do now know well and who are NOT friends/contacts in any online service.
I have never emailed them (with two exceptions); we don't even know each others' email addresses, and even if we did, my Apple ID email is not one I use for actual emailing purposes. Nor do we know each others' phone numbers, nor gaming nicknames; often not even last names. I didn't even know that they owned iOS devices or played games at all!
We have certainly never played games with one another before; in fact, I have never used Game Center's friend feature and I don't have any GC friends. I only play random matches, and almost always on non-GC game services, for that matter.
None of them has ever made a friend request to me. I've only ever gotten one GC request, long ago, and I denied it; it was not someone I knew.
Some of them list "zero games in common" so it's not even that (and anyway, millions of people have games in common with me).
Only one of them is in my Contacts (iOS/Mac address book), and knowing how serious they are about privacy, I doubt the email address I have is their AppleID. I know your address book can (for now) be accessed without permission, but these people just aren't listed.
But I DO run into these recommendations in person every so often!
These cannot be randomly selected by geography because a) they're not super close to me in miles, and b) there are millions of iOS users near me. No way that most of the suggestions would be people I've met, if this were chance alone. SOME source of data is being used by GC, and I'm baffled as to what it could be.
The closest three theories I can come up with are all pretty implausible:
    1. Indirect Facebook connection. These people are NOT my Facebook friends (with a couple exceptions; I never actually use Facebook but I do have an account, and if someone requests, I generally accept). I double-checked that. But they MAY be "friends of friends" possibly. But how would Apple obtain my FB friend list? And if they did have it, wouldn't they just suggest my actual FB friends, not friends-of-friends? My Facebook login email address is an alumni address that I have never used for any other purpuse; it is not my Apple ID. And I have diligently set nearly every option to "hidden" on Facebook: even friends see a mostly blank profile!
    2. Meetup.com. This is a 100% correlation! I'm in several local groups that use Meetup.com to schedule meetings, and ALL of these Game Center recommendations are memebers of Meetup groups that I too am a member of. That's how I've met most of them. But Meetup has no "friends" feature, and most of these people have had no online connection with me (Meetup messages etc.) through Meetup. We've just attended the same events--which do have online RSVP lists--or else we are merely listed as members of the same group(s). (But we're talking large groups, so I haven't actually met most of the members, and I have met most of these GC recommendations.) But how would Apple obtain my Meetup info? Again my Meetup account's email address is not my Apple ID, and I have never used that email address with any Apple service (although it is on my Contacts card).
    3. Maybe Apple harvested my address book/contacts list (which does NOT contain these people), and also harvested the contacts lists of these people, AND also harvested the contacts lists of people we know in common who happen to have both of us listed. Then they put it all together. (That's a stretch: the people I know the best on Meetup--whose info I do have in Contacts--are Android users!) But again, why not recommend my actual contacts, instead of contacts-of-contacts? My actual contacts--which contain numerous iOS users and games--are notably absent from the recommendations (with one exception).
Obivously Apple cannot, and does not, literally know who I have met. (No foil hat for me!) But they DO seem to have some data source that correlates closely with people I have met (and Meetup activity especially). I'm dying to know how that's possible.
This is a privacy concern, for at least three reasons I can think of:
    1. GC lists these people's real names AND GC nicknames together--BEFORE I have accepted them as friends! And vice versa, I'm sure my nickname is being shown with my real name to total strangers. That means strangers, employers, stalkers, whoever, can now tie a person to their nickname (often the same one they use all over the Interner, not just GC). But we're not talking random suggestions: this is being show to people I DO know. Maybe I don't want them Googling my online nicknames! Maybe I complain about my work with that nickname Maybe I want my online friends and real-life acquaintainces kept separate. I definitely want EVERYTHING kept separate from these people I barely know but run into from time to time! One of these people is, in fact, on the sex offenders registry, and has stalked a friend of mine both online and offline. Maybe he'll learn my GC nickname--the same way it has shown me his--and can now Google that!
    2. If I have a lot of "games in common" listed, then they can peg me as a "gamer," which is sometimes a negative. Maybe I want my boss (or whoever) to think I'm more serious, even if he games too, and now he knows I have 30 games and wonders why I'm not staying late to work Maybe I just don't want to be roped into being "friends" online with my boss, or having to let him win games! Again, although this is a small issue at first glance, it's less small when things are being shared with people you really DO know in real life. What if my hypothetical stalker sees I have games in common? Sure, I can deny their friend request and cancel their 500 game attempts, but I'd rather be 100% hidden from them in the first place. I have no prior online contact, I want it to stay that way, and I've never given Apple permission, that I know of, to share my real name with people I never friended. (And even if I did, it should be with random strangers--not actual acquaintances.)
    3. The big mystery--how is Apple getting data that correlates with who I've met in the first place? I'm guessing that some people see the same pattern I do, and some don't; which might lead to an answer, but so far I'm stumped. (If this does tie to Meetup some bizarre way, that would be unnerving because Meetup ties me to real places and specific times.)
Theories are welcome! And a basic question: what data sources DOES Game Center have available to use in making friend suggestions? I would have guessed maybe Location Services (nearby people) and people who have played a game with me (or made a friend request) in the past. But those sources are not what I'm seeing.
(Even weirder is that nobody else seems to have posted about this happening; it may not happen to everyone, but surely some people have had this same question? I feel like I'm in a Kafka novel...)

That's a good thought that could explain some cases, but not mine: these people definitely don't know my email address, and I'm not in their Address Book. (Some of these are people I might meet on a hike, say, and nod to in passing on other hikes once a or twice a year, and that's the extent of the "relationship"--no contact info ever exchanged. We don't even know what cities each other are from.)
we don't even know each others' email addresses, and even if we did, my Apple ID email is not one I use for actual emailing purposes. Nor do we know each others' phone numbers, nor gaming nicknames; often not even last names.
I should correct my first post: I said I "do now know well"... that should be "do NOT know well".

  • Can no longer recommend Fascinate due to non-support of issues -  class action time?

I loved my Fascinate when I got it, but the failure of Verizon to promptly resolve KNOWN software issues with known-to-Verizon solutions constitutes something dangerously close to fraud.  Like others, I was promised a prompt upgrade to Froyo by a Verizon rep when I bought the phone.  Like others. my GPS performance is terrible, with frequent delays of 10 minutes to infinity to achieve a location lock.  Like others, I let my 30 day return expire because I was promised a software fix was coming out Real Soon Now, so now I am screwed.
The issue is NOT the delayed Froyo update, the issue is that the phone does not function as promised by Verizon when sold.  Knowing sale of a defective product that does not meet its advertised features is fraudulent under the commercial code in any state of the union.
Therefore I am doing some of the few things I can do under the circumstances:
First of all, new buyers are warned that the phone DOES NOT WORK as advertised in many cases due to software issues with GPS, email push, and other features.  If you buy it, don't expect it to work.  If you are promised otherwise by a Verizon store or rep, be warned that the promises are empty.  Be warned that the Verizon implementation of Bing en lieu of Google search and other disruptions of the base Google services makes the phone almost unusable compared to a true Android environment such as that on certain other Android phones and providers.  Bing is terrible. VZNavigator is a rip off (and terrible).  If you are a lawyer interested in a class action against Verizon related to thi sphone be aware that you should have plenty of interested parties.  Personally I would like my service fees waved for the period from September when I bought the phone through whenever-they-actually-make-it-work with debugged software.  It is clear that engineering KNOWS how to make the GPS work even without a full Froyo update - they just haven't released a patch.
I wish I could love this phone - but I can't recommend it any more to any one for any reason until Samsung/Verizon fix the software and de-Bing and de-bloat an otherwise excellent piece of hardware.  This is EXACTLY what Apple got right, and that Verizon has wrong.  A pox on them and their bloatware and BIng and broken search functions.  It's like a bad dream.  Swapping the hardware out for another Fasicinate won't fix it.  I'm stuck.

Do I actually expect to see a suit?  No, not really.  But, message reads on the first page of the Fascinate forum suggest that as of now at least 4000 potential Fascinate owners may have received enough reasons to consider either a different phone or a different carrier.  Verizon execs might have a look over the fence at IPhone land, where there is a mob wielding torches and pitch forks that loves their iPhones (but hates ATT for the poor service experience).  Provide even average service and you build brand loyalty that overcomes almost any foul up.  Give your customers good reasons to hate you, and they surely will.
Today I drove a 30 mile round trip with a fresh A-GPS almanac and never got GPS located closer than 1100 yards.  If it ever DOES synch, it will be good to 10 ft.  and stay locked until I go indoors.  If.  The Bluetooth refused to connect (again).  Works great WHEN it actually occasionally works though.  The hardware can do it.  The software is a bad joke.  Is is Samsung's fault?  Maybe.  Could Verizon provide a timely fix by internal or Samsung resources? Definitely. Samsung has fixed these issues for other markets long ago.   The shame is that it takes what could be a great experience and sours it all.  It's not about Froyo, it's about having basic features that work.  While some of thse phones work perfectly, some combination of hardware and software issues means that too many customers did not receive what the paid for, and they have good reason to be angry with Verizon for the poor experience and callous treatment.
