Backspace in X apps

I ssh in to Solaris 10 boxes with PuTTY 0.60, and backspace works fine at the command line. In an X application, though, backspace and delete do nothing.

Yes. I'm forwarding X back to my PC, which is running Cygwin. The Oracle installer is my problem child. I tried with xcalc, and both backspace and delete clear the value in the window back to 0. Backspace works just fine in an xterm. The delete key is a little off in the xterm... it moves the character the cursor is on to the left, instead of replacing it with the character to the right as I'm used to.

  • Strange problem pasting and backspacing in Mail.app

I've been having a strange problem in Mail.app when composing messages.  Suppose I have a short, three-line message like this:
    Hi John,
    Here's the quote from Einstein:
Simple enough, right?  So then I go to another application -- for example, Firefox -- to copy some text that I want to paste in.  I put the text cursor at the point where I want to paste the text; in this example, after "Einstein:".  I paste.  And then it looks like this:
    Hi John,
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
    Here's the quote from Einstein:
That's right: it pastes the text ABOVE the line where I want it, instead of just on the same line.  It doesn't matter if I choose regular "Paste" or "Paste and Match Style."
Now, I tried to be smart, and put a blank line below where I wanted to the text.  When I paste it in, I get the pasted text below "Einstein:" just as you would expect. But if I click at the beginning of the pasted text, and then press backspace so it goes up to the previous line, then it jumps ABOVE the line I want and the result is identical to the one illustrated above.
Any ideas? This is driving me nuts. When I have copied text that I want to paste into an e-mail, I have to compose my messages elsewhere (usually BBEdit) and then paste them into Mail.app in their entirety.  HELP!
Also, no: I have zero copy/paste problems in any other application.  I have no clipboard add-on software, either.
(note that I'm at OS X 10.5.8 despite the "product" remark below)

I have the same problem. It also happens in notes.
Now I created a note in Mail on my Macbook and had this problem: Backspacing a line moved it above the previous paragraph. Then I opened the same note on my Ipad, and I did not have the problem, I could simply backspace the same line and it was connected to the end of the previous paragraph. What I did see in my Ipad note however was that the two paragraphs had a different font (which was not visible on macbook, until I edited it on my Ipad). Somehow my macbook mail creates unsolicited separate paragraphs, which use different invisble fonts, and these paragraphs may not be merged.
The same problem probably also causes email messages that I compose on my macbook to end up at the recipient in a very different font (i.e., lines/ paragraphs are larger and/or in different font.) than what I see when composing the message. This is really annoying, because it makes you look like a complete moron who is unable to compose a properly edited message.

  • X11 issue:  e key is mapped to backspace in X11 apps

I've had this problem before but can't remember what I did to get it fixed...
I ssh into my office linux machine to launch firefox and have it displayed on my Mac Pro here at home. This works fine. The one problem I have is that when working with firefox (via ssh, displaying on my Macs X11) the "e" key is mapped to backspace.
Office machine is Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop, with firefox 3 beta. I guess I'll try Opera too...
    Any ideas?

This is most likely to an errant "xmodmap" somewhere in the shell init scripts on the Linux box. If you can run "xev" on the Mac you should be able to see which keycode the "e" key is generating. If you then look through the shell init scripts on the Linux side, you'll likely find that this keycode is being remapped to the backspace.
To make matters worse, this remapped key doesn't just apply to the X clients invoked via that particular ssh session, it will affect all X clients running on your Mac.
What I would suggest is modifying your init scripts on the Linux side so that they never invoke xmodmap for remote connections. The syntax depends on the shell you use, but it will be something similar to this (shown for tcsh):
    if (! ${?REMOTEHOST} && ${?DISPLAY} ) then
    # Make sure backspace is correctly mapped
    xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"
    endif
In fact, I'll wager you have an xmodmap line almost exactly like that. I note that on my FreeBSD machine keycode 22 is what my backspace key generates, but on my Mac keycode 22 is what my "e" key generates.
Yep, I've been down this road before on other operating systems. I actually thought my keyboard had gotten fried because the "t" key stopped working altogether. Turns out it was an errant xmodmap on a remote machine.

  • Lag when system sounds play on Retina MacBook Pro

I have a problem on my Retina Macbook Pro (Mid 2012, running on 10.9 Mavericks) that has persisted for quite some time.
Essentially the problem is that whenever an application plays a system sound, the application lags for a few seconds. However, this comes and goes.
For an example of what I mean, the lag happens when I make the following actions:
    - Deleting a file in Finder (Trash sound should play)
    - Using a 'find' prompt in an app like Chrome, Xcode, TextEdit, and entering a string that cannot be found. That is, the lag occurs when I type the character that causes no result to be found. (Beep should play)
    - Pressing 'delete' (backspace) in any app's text field with no text present (Beep should play)
    - If I go to System Preferences -> Sound, and select a new 'alert sound' in the Sound Effects tab, the lag occurs and the Console prints "System Preferences[52828]: Error 268435460 setting AlertSound"
While my computer is in 'problem' mode, every single app is guaranteed to lag when these events happen.
But as I said, the problem comes and goes. It first happened after I had to reinstall one day. I think I screwed something up with preferences, permissions and such, because it took a while for me to fix everything up. But I don't think I quite fixed everything, because this problem started to occur ever since then.
The problem will appear for days or weeks at a time and then disappear for weeks. Just now I'm posting this thread because it had actually gone away for months, and just reappeared today. Nothing that I have found can explicitly start or stop this problem from occurring, it's seemingly random.
Does anybody have any idea why this would occur, and what can be done to fix it other than a complete clean reinstall?
    Thanks!

Sorry wrong post to this thread.
    Now the right post.
No OS X can not use all 8GBs of RAM when the Windows Virtual Machine is running. As long as the Win VM is up and running it take all the RAM you allocated to it. So if you allocated 2GBs of RAM to the VM OS X can only use the other 6GBs. As for the CPUs OS X can use all the cores and or Virtual core as all current Intel CPUs show as double the physical number of cores. So if you have a Dual Core i5 it will look like you have 4 cores. It's done with HyperThreading.

  • Text Message incomplete or missing? Also-SMS editing / backspace malfunction...

First issue - sometimes I received text messages that are missing the last few words/characters. I don't think this is an Android or iPhone originated issue as this happens at random from people that I know have different types of phones. Sometimes the 160 character split will break up the message and send the rest in another message, but most of the time I never see the end of the message. I currently use the existing text messaging app in conjunction with the SMS pop-up. The issue was prevalent when I used Handcent and then uninstalled it to see if that was the problem. I have also uninstalled SMS pop-up to see if it was the problem with no luck. I have looked over the settings multiple times and still cannot find anything that would be causing this. Suggestions are welcome.
Second issue - when editing a text message in portrait mode I may erase multiple characters by holding down the backspace key. On occasion, the app flips out, reverts to showing the very first message that was sent or received for the contact, freezes momentarily, and then two buttons appear on the bottom giving me the option to Cancel or Delete. I will hit Cancel or use the back button on the bottom of the phone multiple times before it will return to my message, which at this point has saved as a draft. This is EXTREMELY frustrating. It does it only at random, but it seems to be getting more frequent. The only option most of the time is to go Home and then return to text messages, find my draft, and use the backspace key carefully (and one quick push at a time to erase) so as not to invoke the same issue.
I think both of these are bugs that may be inherent with this phone in particular or possibly Gingerbread...
    Thanks!
    -Wes

I've been having this same issue for the past few months, in my case the problem seems to be more prevalent with text messages originating from other carriers (but not always, occasional partial incoming text issues from Verizon wireless phones as well).  I called technical support, followed all their advice (basic tech advice, power cycle, remove sim, reboot, etc.) and was also transferred to HTC support that recommended a hot fix, which didn't really do anything to resolve the issue, also then did a factory reset and still no resolution.  Not sure what other options I have....besides waiting for a new device when I am able to upgrade.  Off topic, I think its Bee S to not be able to upgrade to a new device within 2 years, when Verizon does not fully support, properly updated/hotfix, existing issues in a timely manner...why is it that we are using and outdated OS, when a new one is out and available.  Another compelling argument to purchase an iPhone (on any carrier), one device, one OS.....everyone gets an update at the same time, and phone issues are rapidly resolved. I can continue my rant, but I'll leave it as is...same issues, different day and I'm sure you've all heard the same rants of frustration.

  • HT201359 What do I do? Can't delete credit card from iTunes and can't update apps

I'm having problems with deleting my credit card from my iTunes account. Tried everything possible. I tried making a purchase but it didn't go through so now it's not letting me update my apps. What do I do?

"None" should be located right next to where you chose what kind of credit card you are using. You should be able to find it, if you go to your account and click 'Edit Payment Information' Then where it says what kind of card it is it should be right after PayPal. But if you can't find it, can't you just highlight the information and backspace it?

  • IS THERE A WAY TO DELETE A PURCHASE FROM IBOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY AND ICLOUD, OR AT LEAST A WAY TO HIDE WHAT YOU'VE PURCHASED IN THIS NEW APP?

Dear Apple, my name is Jack, and I recently upgraded my computer to the new OSX 10.9, which included among many other apps the iBooks one, in this new iBooks app for Mac I accidentally downloaded by mistake a sort of obscene japanese comic book, since the moment that this happened I've been trying to remove this content from my iBooks library, which is being impossible due to the fact that even if a successfully delete the book with the backspace key it still appears but with an iCloud symbol, and if I go to my iCloud settings theres no options to stop iBooks form sharing this on iCloud for there is no "iBooks" option on iCloud settings, I even followed a Tutorial on the apple web page about hiding your purchases that explains how to, but in this new version of iTunes there is no such option as "connect" under the Store menu of iTunes, or even if I make my way to my iTunes purchases this new iBook purchases does not appear. I just want to be able to open my new iBooks app without having to see this obscene japanese comic book all over the app. My request is for you people to add an option to completely remove books from the library and from iCloud, please, so far these new OSX was amazing and this is the very first time I have something to complain about.

Well as a matter of fact, I already found the solution. The option is a little bit hidden, and this will remove your purchases completely from the library and iCloud. What you have to do is this: 1.- Open iBooks app, and the first thing you will get it's your library, then at the top left corner of the window click on iBooks Store. Once iBooks store is open you will have four options at the top: "Featured", "Top Charts", "Categories" and "Top Authors", you have to click on "Featured" or "Categories" it's the same but you have to be on any of those two.
2.- Once you are in "Featured" or "Categories" at the right side of the window there's going to be your email address that you use as your apple id, and in "Categories"  you will see at the right side the topic "All Categories"  and bellow that you will see your email address again. Doesn't matter if you are on categories or featured the option bellow your apple id is going to be QUICK LINKS, and bellow that there's gonna be four options: Account. Purchased, Redeem and Support. Click on Purchased.
3.-Once you clicked on purchased and the Purchased window is open you will see in the middle of the window two options : "All" and "Not in my Library", click on "All", then you will have all your purchases, there you will only have to put the cursor on the book you want to completely delete, but without clicking on it, just putting the cursor in the book and a black cross will appear at the top left corner of the book, click on the cross, if it ask you are sure you want to hide or delete the content just click the affirmative option.
4.- In the top left corner click library again, once in your library you have to find the options that are at the very top of your screen, the ones that are in the same bar as your computer name, date and time, volume and in the case of macbooks the wifi signal and the battery. Those options are: iBooks, File, Edit, View, Go, Store, Window and Help. Click on "View" , when you get all the options of "View" you'll have to find the one that says "Show Purchases in iCloud" and most likely would have a check mark, if it does not have a check mark close it and skip to step 5, if it does have a check mark just click on this option so the check mark disappears.
5.- Last step. Now you just have to close the app, completely, so go to your dock and give a secondary click on iBooks app and on the secondary click options click Quit. Just open iBooks again and there will be there no more.
Hope this is of some help to any of you, and sorry if this was tricky or if I'm not very good at explaining. I figured this by myself so if any of you does not get this explanation just send me an email, I'll be happy to help you with it.

  • Apostrophes trigger weird backspace behavior in Mail

I upgraded to Mavericks a couple of days ago, and since then I've had the weirdest and most annoying problem in my Mail app (and ONLY in my Mail app):
If I type a contraction ending in "re", (example: we're, they're), the spacebar sends the cursor back one character instead of adding a space after the word. So, it deposits the cursor back beteween the "re".
If I form a contraction with any other letter combination (I'll, he'd, it's), the spacebar does nothing on the first strike. I have to hit it twice to get a space after the word.   At all other times, the spacebar functions normally.
I've tried turning off spelling checks on my global keyboard preferences, and on Mail.app preferences; I've tried restarting the app and my MacBook.  Nothing helps.  And since I'm not a very formal writer, it bites me in the *** approximately seventy thousand times a day.
Is there any way to cure this disease?

Are you sure that the "smart quotes" box really fixed the problem? I have the same problem, but what happens is that when I type an apostrophe, it is at first a straight apostrophe, until I hit the space bar after the word in which I used it, at which time the straight apostrophe turns into a "smart" (i.e., slanted) apostrophe, and the cursor jumps back to the end of the word that was just autocorrected from straight to smart apostrophe.
Turning off smart quotes indeed prevents the backspace, but it does so by *not* turning the straight apostrophe into a slanted apostrophe. So yeah, it prevents the annoying backspace, but at the cost of functionality. How has apple not fixed this after all these months? Does mail just not misbehave this way for most people?

  • I need some assistance on stopping my backspace key from "sticking" on my iPad 2?

I have reset, restored, and rebooted. Nothing is working. My backspace key goes rogue even if I only hit it once. I've had this pad for 3 days and I'm a bit frustrated. I've noticed that the backspace key goes haywire in almost all third party apps but it also happens when I type email, calendar , events, and notes. The only way I can stop this from happening is to hit the spacebar multiple times or any other key on board. I am not new to Apple products as I have had several iPhones, iPod touches, and I had a Mac Book Pro for work. I have searched the communities and saw that this was an issue with earlier iPhones but I have not read anything to iPad 2. Any helpful assistance you can provide is appreciated.

I assume that you know if you hold down on the delete/back space key that it picks up speed and will rapidly delete sections of text as opposed to one letter at a time.
If you have restarted and reset (hold down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears) and have had no success, I can only suggest closing apps. Go to the home screen and double tap the home button to bring up your recent apps at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until they all wiggle. Tap the minus signs on the apps to close them. Close every app in the task bar. Tap the screen above the task bar and then restart the iPad.
I have no idea if this will help, but it can't hurt to try it. If your iPad is only three days old, I would also suggest a call to technical support. You get 90 days of phone support when you buy an iPad.

  • Screen backspace broken, delete ok, backspace and del ok in plain bash

Hi, all, im having a little trouble getting backspace to work in screen session, i have looked up previous messages and everything works fine in normal bash session to server (debian), utf-8 ok, delete ok, backspace ok, but when i launch screen on server side, the backspace is not working, i get visual bell.
On screen session at mac server this is working properly, and on local machine everything is ok.
I tried to set .screenrc file on server containing:
    bindkey -d kb stuff \177
    bindkey -d kb stuff "\177"
    bindkey -d kb stuff ^?
    bindkey -d kb stuff `H
(single line every try offcourse), but no solution so far.
I do realise most likely its not os x issue but im have not found working fix on linux sites either, and asking & telling im a mac user closes some doors.
Oh and i should point out, im using mbp and delete combo is fn-backspace, wich is working ok in screen, but plain backspace is the problem.
Any idea's or directions other than google appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Freemem,
What you didn't say is how you got backspace to work in the Debian shell. I don't know anything about screen but most command line utilities work correctly if you fix the problem at the terminal level rather than the shell level. You can use bindkey in the shell but that isn't always communicated to utilities launched from that shell. (like screen) I don't know if screen will benefit from the following but the preferred way to get the terminal to grok the '^?' control character being sent by the backspace or delete key is to use stty. (this issue is hardly limited to Macs; every machine I use, including RedHat, sends the '^?' control character when the backspace key is pressed) I use the following in my remote shells.
    if [ "$-" = "himBH" ]; then
       stty erase ^?
    fi
Note that the "^?" should actually be the control character produced by the key sequence, <Control>-v, <Delete>. Also, I've included the test for shell interactivity that I use; you may have to adjust that for Debian. If you copy-and-paste the above, make sure you replace the non-breaking spaces I used for indention at the beginning of the second line with real spaces. Note that I don't use screen so I don't know whether this will help in a screen session but I think it has a good chance; it helps with every app I use.

  • Isight causing app crash's

almost anytime i use the iSight, the program im running crashs, and its not like I can restart the app, the arow in the dock stays there, and i cant restart it. The only way to fix has been to log out or reboot, this seems to only have been happening since the 10.4.8 update. and ideas on what this might be?

For us the problem can be reproduced as follows:
    1. Have a flash.text.TextField with maxChars set to some value
    2. Have Google keyboard installed Google Keyboard - Android Apps on Google Play
    3. Enter text that in length reaches maxChars. Continue typing using the predicted typing. No visible letters will appear, but that's ok.
    4. Then press and hold backspace on the keyboard
    5. See that app crashes.
Happens both, when IME is in full screen or in non full screen mode.
Tested on Adobe AIR 15, Sansubg Galaxty S3, Samsung Galaxy S5.

  • Keystroke delay in Mail.app when autosaving

This is a very obnoxious problem I'm having in Mail.app.  Apologies if it's been addressed elsewhere; kindly point me in the right direction if so.
    First, off:  the specs.
2011 unibody Macbook Pro, 2.3 Ghz Core i5, 8GB RAM.
    Running Mountain Lion, 10.8.1
Since installing Mountain Lion, Mail.app has had an intolerable keystroke delay whenever it tries to autosave a message.  Which seems to happen about every 15 seconds or so.  What will happen is I'll type for a while and then Mail will freeze up for a few seconds while it autosaves the message.  When it resumes, I've usually lost everything I've typed during the time when it's frozen.
It's beyond obnoxious.  It's intolerable.  I've searched around to see if others have had a similar problem, and haven't found much.  I've dug around in the preferences to see if there's an autosave setting with no luck.  No idea what's causing it.
I'm about at the point where I'm considering abandoning Mail.app entirely for a third-party e-mail solution, but I'd rather not spend the money.  Anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I have the same problem, although the characters I type do end up on the screen after a while. Just the screen updates are frozen, so you don't see what you're typing (or erasing using backspace, even more annoying if you keep it pressed and end up erasing half your message). Very, very annoying, almost unbelievable in 2012. This type of lag would have been unacceptable 20 years ago. Processing speeds have increased how much exactly in the mean time? This does indeed appear to be related to autosave, but it's beyond me why this can't simply happen in a separate thread so you can keep typing.

  • Bug in Notes app?

Does anybody know if there is a bug in the Notes app that comes on the iPhone?
I opened a new note and typed "Shopping", hit return and typed "Hy". The little helper box shows "By", but I want "Hy-vee", so I hit the numbers keypad and type the "-". It then changes my word to say "By-" in the note. So I hit the backspace key three times. Once it deletes the "B", it freaks out and keeps deleting the rest of the characters in the note.

Thats true.. Its not just By- Type any Uppercase letter followed by any lowercase letter and a "-", delete these three and there u go.. it deletes the entire note... STRANGE are the ways of Apple NOTES !!
