Backup a pc to time capsule

Can a Windows XP PC be backed up to an Airport Time Capsule?  If so, what is the process?

Yes. You will need to get a backup application that runs under Windows and is capable of sending the backup data over the network.

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again
Check to make sure that you are running firmware 7.6.4 on the Time Capsule

Often, this error can be corrected by pulling the power on the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and powering the Time Capsule back up.

  • Time machine backups wont move to time capsule

i have two mac minis, one is the mid 2010 model and the the other one is a 2006 model. i have successfuly used superduper to finally move my 500 gigs
of time machine backups to the new time capsule. but the older 2006 model has me lost. i am tempted to go to the applestore to make them copy it
if i follow the directions including resetting time machine the best i can get is a pop up box every hour that says the identity of the time capsule cannot
be verified. this does not show up on the 2010 mini
when i tell it to pick the drive theres 2 other drives that i dont even have! those are "HOME" and "NET" on "localhost" i have no idea where its getting
those drive paths. maybe its my readynas , when i go to /Volumes, there is no home or net folders
another problem i have with time machine is for some strange reason there is a range of backups in an old sparse bundle file and i would like to move all the backups for this computer into one main directory, instead of having to browse old time machines. but when i try to copy from one sprarse bundle to another i get an error saying that the backup files cannot be modified

Is that the message in #C15 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting?  If so, are you selecting Use This Disk?  If not, exactly what does it say (or post a screenshot).

That's correct; you cannot merge one set of backups into another.  A set of TM backups has a complex structure, with things all linked together; you cannot alter it.  See How Time Machine works its Magic for an explanation.

  • I keep getting this error message: Time Capsule could not complete the backup.  The backup disk image "/Volumes/Time Capsule/Karla Laura Smith's MacBook Pro. sparse bundle" could not be assessed (error -1).  Tried restarting etc.  Please help.

    I keep receiving this message.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Time Capsule/Karla Laura Smith's MacBookPro.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
Can anyone help me clear this annoying message up?  Thanks for advance....

The unplugging was of power, if you were unplugging ethernet .. that will not do anything.
    The issue is explained here.
    C17 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If a restart of the TC is not adequate you maybe in the 2% that has other issues.. please try a full network restart in correct order.. with everything off.. modem.. then TC.. then clients.. with 2min gap to allow modem and TC to finish boot process.

Ich hatte das selbe problem, als ich ein laufendes Backup durch einen ungewollten Neustart unterbrochen hatte. • I am unable to delete a backup file from my Time Capsule.  What to do?

Separately I asked for and got help here in relation to what to do with my Time Capsule when I changed computers.  I erased the contents of my Time Capsule that had been put there using my old Mac Mini and using Time Machine created a new backup of the same data that are now on my new Mac Mini.
In the process, however, I mistakenly created a backup of a large folder that I do not need.  I researched how to delete it using Time Machine and following the simple steps set forth tried a number of times, all without success, to delete the folder on my Time Capsule using Time Machine.  I go into Time Machine, I find the folder, I highlight it, I open the little widget and choose 'Delete all backups' of it, I choose 'OK' when asked if I am sure I want to do it . . . each time, though, nothing happens after that.  The folder remains there as it was, undeleted.
Can anyone suggest what I might do?
    Thank you.

Thank you for your further help, Bob.
My Mac Mini is a desktop.  I am using Mountain Lion with it, updated to the latest version.
I went back into Time Machine (and now understand what you mean about 'Star Wars' screen), and found the timeline on the extreme right edge of my computer screen, as you explained.
Despite the passage of time, I have only three 'times' expressed on the scale.  Two are purple, and represent the two times yesterday that I did backups, the original full backup and one subsequent one (I do not have Time Machine set up, now, to do automatic backups, only manual ones as I direct).  One is white and is marked 'Now'.
When I click on the white time, 'Now', for my external HD, I get a long list of items, all but one of which I do not want and tried to delete yesterday.  Interestingly, however, when I click on either of the two purple times, for yesterday, the only item that appears is the one that I want to backup.  None of the other items is there.
If the purple items are the only ones that represent actual backups, then it would seem that the deletions I did yesterday in fact worked.
If that is the case, again, there remains a bit of a puzzle as to why the 'now' position shows other items too, but if in fact that is just a glitch and does not represent anything actually saved on my Time Capsule, then there is no reason for me to be fussed, only puzzled.
Your thoughts on what I have found and tentatively concluded?

  • How does one transfer only 1 of 4 backups from an old TIme Capsule to a new one, such that the 1 on the old TC can be deleted to save space?

I have a 2-TB TC that currently backs up 4 Macs, which is full - no more space to backup, down to less than a year's worth of backup for one Mac, so I don't want any more old backups deleted.
I bought a new 3-TB Time Capsule, and wish to move only one of the the 4 backups to it, which is currently over 1 TB. The idea is to free space on the old TC for the other 3 Mac backups. Also the two TCs may end up in 2 different locations soon.
I read about how to do this at Apple and at pondini.
Upshot was that I copied over the one sparsebundle using Finder drag/drop from the old to the new TC.
When I go to Time Machine preferences to Select Disk, then click the new TC, and Use Disk, I get this dialog:
I don't want to Use Both.
I assume that if I click Replace "Data" that the 1+ TB file that took 12 hours to copy will be lost.
How do I get Time Machine to just resume backing up to this sparsebundle, and not create a whole new backup, deleting the file that has the past year of backups?

I assume you selected the new Time Capsule?  If in doubt, and for future clarification, you might want to rename the Data folder on one or both TCs via Airport Utility.  Click it on the Disks panel to change the name; then that name will appear on the selection window, etc., so you'll always know which is which:
In any event, the prompt means "Replace (the old) "Data" as the destination for this Mac's backups."  It will not touch either the new or old sparsebundle -- future backups will just be directed to the selected location(s).  Do note, however, that when you change destinations, the TM Prefs window will show "None" for oldest and latest backups.  Don't be alarmed -- that's just TM being lazy and not checking the actual backups yet. See #B3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #34 for details on backing-up to multiple destinations.
By the way, just for future reference, another option would have been to connect a USB drive to the existing TC (that's what "S.TM.Backups" is in the sample}.
How do I get Time Machine to just resume backing up to this sparsebundle, and not create a whole new backup, deleting the file that has the past year of backups?
    Click Replace "Data".

  • How can I import all the backups from an old Time Capsule to a new one?

    Hi,
My 2008 Time Capsule just crashed a week ago. Obviously it was out of warranty, and Apple just offered me a new 1TB TC for a reduced priced, and gave me the old internal disk in a plastic bag.
I want to import the information from the old TC to my new TC. Is this possible? How can I do this?
    Thanks

Your Apple service centre is very good.. they mostly refuse to help in any way.
You need a USB to sata converter cable and power supply or a USB disk holder.. SATA type.. although that is pretty universal now.. they are only a few dollars from most large computer stores or ebay. Plug the usb drive into the computer and copy the contents over to the TC. using ethernet will help btw.. if you only have the air buy a USB to ethernet or Thunderbolt to ethernet (if you have the latest one).. they are available from apple at reasonable prices.
Then  you can copy the sparsebundle across..
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
BUT I have to say I don't recommend it.. I think you are better starting with a new backup and keep the old disk as an archive..

  • How can I backup NAS drive to Time Capsule using Time Machine?

My itunes library is on a USB HD that's connected to my time capsule, essentially turning the drive into a NAS drive. Is there anyway I can include this drive in time machine backups? So basically, time machine would be backing up the hard drive connected to the time capsule... to the time capsule.
    Thanks. Steve

Sorry, but not possible. The Time Capsule can only backup an internal drive on a computer and an external drive that is attached directly to a computer.
