Backup advise

I am in need of backup software and general advise.
Here's my situation. I am in an office environment. I have 2 macs (graphic design stations) and we have ZERO backup strategy. I have access to a vast amount of storage capacity via network on a Linux server.
What I want is to be able to do a one time clone type backup for each Mac and then be able to schedule weekly backups. The weekly backups would recoginize what has changed or is new and only overwrite/add this information (if that makes sense).
I have looked into SuperDuper, ibackup, retrospect, etc.
Can anyone point me in a more solid direction?
Thanks,
-Steven

Can anyone point me in a more solid direction?
Check out Deja Vu, it's a lockable System Preference pane that can auto-clone whole drives (like once a week) and auto-backup folders (like every night) even when logged out over a network.
Hard drives do indeed fail, it could happen tommorow morning, backing up files isn't just enough in a buisness setting where time = money.
It would be best to have a external drive on each Mac where Deja Vu will auto-clone once a week. Then auto-backup certain folders to a server and the clone every night. This way in case a boot drive dies, it only take a minute to boot off the clone and go back to work.
Since most utility software requires booting off another drive anyway to fix the primary, even if that fails you can always grab your most recent files and erase and reverse clone back onto the original.
The file backups on the server are just extra gravy, but you don't want to clone to a server, clones (unless to a partition, not really advised) overwrite the target drive. It's a clone after all.

  • I had a one on one with my apple rep yesterday.  They backed up all my photos on my computer.  I was advised to delete photos from Photo stream on my iPhone and iPad and then back it up.  I did backup the iPhone, ipad back not possible not enought space

    Hello,
I had a one on one with my apple rep yesterday.  They backed up my camera roll from my iphone as well as my ipad on my computer as I was not able to backup to icloud due to lack of space.
They advised me to delete photos from my photo stream on my iphone and ipad and then do a back up.
I deleted the photos from photo stream on my iphone and ipad.
I was able to backup my iphone but NOT my ipad as it is saying that there is not enough room on icloud to do this back up.
    Any solution?

If it says Not Enough Storage Space on iCloud then you can get more Storage space for iCloud if you want to backup more Data on iCloud Storage. You will find the Pricing for Additional Storage Space and how to Buy Storage Space for iCloud from your Device in the Link below.

    Hi ldyazch,
You will need to set it up as a new phone, not from a backup, first. Then, after setup is complete, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery power. After then update downloads and installs, you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
This will let you go through the setup again, and this time you can choose your backup.

After installing iOS 8 on my MacBook Pro I've been unable to backup my laptop to Time Machine - any advise?

I would really like to know how you managed to do that seeing as how the MBP is not capable of running iOS
iOS is only for mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads and iPods
The MBP uses OS X instead
Maybe once you get your story straight we can help you

  • HT201270 Hello, I followed the instructions on my iPhone4s by going to Sett Gen About and nothing was new even thou I was advised to update as soon as I plugged into my Mac for a backup. Does this just mean that it tells all iPhone users to check just in

    Hello All,
I followed the instructions when I plugged in my iPhone 4s to do a backup on my Mac. I was then prompted to update carrier settings by going to Settings>General>About. I did as instructed and nothing was new, even though I was advised to update as soon as I plugged into my Mac for a backup. Does this just mean that it tells all iPhone users to check for any available updates just in case ?

Updating carrier settings isn't the same as updating iOS. You don't get any new or different features. It just affects, ostensibly for the better, how your phone connects with your carrier's network.

  • I would like to download / backup my entire iPhoto library, but want to do so in a manner where each event is saved as a distinct folder.  Can someone please advise if / how this is possible?

I would like to download / backup my entire iPhoto library, but want to do so in a manner where each event is saved as a distinct folder.  Can someone please advise if / how this is possible?

See Terence Devlin's User Tip on exporting from iPhoto:
                     Exporting From iPhoto  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
To write events to separate folders, use "File > Export" and select the subfolder format "Event Name". But that will only backup the photos and not your iPhoto library and all the work you invested in organising it.  For backing up, see:                    iPhoto and File Management

There shouldn't be any fee involved.  Call the Apple online store for your country (1-800-MY-APPLE in the U.S. and Canada) and request a refund.
If the download is stuck, you can download in iTunes on your computer, then sync it to your iPad once your free up some space.  This explains how to download your previous purchases to your computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519.

My Time Machine backup keeps failing.  I get a message the "Volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup".  Please advise.
    Thanks, Howard

You can change the case sensitivity of the sparsebundle.. but I really doubt the error is real.
    See A8 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
The sparsebundle should have case sensitivity turned on.
I cannot even fathom how it could have changed.
Let me recommend before you start fooling around with the sparsebundle.
    Do a full network start.
Power everything off.. start up modem.. wait 2min.. power up the TC.. wait 2min.. power up any other network gear like switches.. wait..
Now power up the computer and try it.
If the error is the same.. I would do a factory reset of the TC.. give it all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Then reset TM .. see A4 in the same reference as above.. and do a verify of the backups.. A5 above and try the backup again..
    No luck..
Then erase the TC and start over.. it is sometimes necessary as TM does get itself in a knot.

  • Advise on storage and backup of family videos

Can anyone help with advising me on storing large iMovieHD files long-term?
I have old analog video (greater than 20 h of tape) that I am converting to digital (using a convertor) and importing into iMovieHD. Then sharing with iDVD to burn these onto DVDs. I would like to save the iMovie files long-term since the tapes will age/degrade over time and the cameras needed to view them will be long-gone 20 years from now. I also have even more digital video that I want to capture in iMovie and store.
My problem is that each hour of iMovieHD ***** up over 12 GBs of space. Do I need to shell out big bucks for a massive external hard drive. What if that crashes? Do I need 2 seperate terabyte external hard drives (1 to store and 1 to backup)? Are there other possibilities? Will technological changes make these files stored on a hard drive obsolete in the next 20 or so years? I haven't even begun a separate project of trying to get my Mother and Father's 8 mm films into a digital format.
Any advise would be much appreciated.

Hi Paul and welcome to the forums!
Yes, that's an important question. I have been through all that with three times the volume you have (took a year!) as well as old 8mm films.
I imported them, one at a time, into iMovie (via a Canopus converter), re-edited them etc, and burned them to a DVD in iDVD. My general attitude is: once you have them on a digital media, they can invent what they like, you should always be able to transfer them to whatever newfangled digital media they come up with!
But the important thing, as you rightly say, is that the storage media should last. Firstly, pick a reliable brand of DVDs. Most of us here prefer Verbatim, Fuji or Maxell. Secondly, use the slightly more expensive 'Archive Grade' DVD blanks, which are said to last up to 100 years. Yes, yes, how do you check that, but ordinary DVD-R media may not even last 10 years. If you haven't used Archive Grade, it might be an idea to make copies every five years or so.
As for backup storage: make two copies of each. Or keep the Disk Image on an external hard disk. Or burn them to digital DV tape via your camera. Also, keep the original material.
Yes, the iMovie project takes up 13GB per hour, but the Disk Image (Standard DVD mpeg2 format) only takes up 4.5GB for two hours of video.
The 8mm films will have to be converted professionally. I never had that, but last year my dear (older) brother dug out all his all ancient 8mm cinefilms, and had them put on DVDs which he sent to me for editing and conversion to proper DVDs. 5 hours' worth, which boiled down to 3 DVDs! You will need some additional software to convert them from the format the 8mm have been converted to in order to import them into iMovie as a DV stream, but we can advise on that later.
As for a hard disk to back up the hard disk, yes in a perfect world, but better to have them on DVDs which are not subject to the same deterioration as magnetic media.
Feel free to post back with additional questions!

  • Advise on using Branch office server as backup

    Hello and thanks for assistance,
The site in question has four physical servers and two virtual servers. They have the following major functions. Server A is a DC/DNS server as well as hosting DFS files. Server B holds exchange server 2012A and the replica partner for DFS, Server C
has two virtual servers installed. First one is exchange 2012B and second one is the antivirus server. Server D is a DC and a witness server. It also holds WSUS. Backup is taking as long as 12 hours. I had an idea of moving Server C and D offsite and configuring
them as branch office servers using VPN. Then all data including mail will be offsite and eliminate the need for backups. All servers of course have RAID1 so my concern really is not hardware related but disaster recovery in the event of fire, flood, ect.
I know this idea may be full of holes but that is why I am posting this for your opinions. There are about 50 workstations in the network. The client is very dependent on the network.
    Thanks
    Ronald C. Pope

    Hi Ronald,
Of course you can create offsite Exchange server and DC. The connection performance may be an issue as you must use site-to-site VPN incase you need a failover.
Both topics are discussed a lot in Exchange and DC forum:
