Backup amd File Storage Question

I've got a bit of a conundrum on my hands and can't decide how to clean it up.
I live in a Mac world and work in a Win world. I made the tranitiin from a dell notebook to a MacBook Air and have a Mac Mini on the desktop at home. I have tons of photos, etc on a NTFS formatted external drive to the tune of maybe 400gb. My wife uses a Win notebook at home.
Recently, I lost a few days because the format on my MBA went south. I didn't lose any data, but got close as I want to get. Shame on me for not doing time machine backups, lesson learned. The MBA is back on its feet now but I've not done a TM backup on it or my Mac Mini ever.
I'm not sure what to do regarding my external drive files. I'd like to have access to them, and dragging around an external is a hassle and to complicate it even more, there are times I need both Mac and Win access to the data. Mac can't write to my NTFS drive so I purchased the application paragon for that. I'm not crazy about having to patch the Mac to make it write to the NTFS but do need the occasional Win machine to see the files.
Considering a Time Capsule, but because I don't understand completely, im stuck. I think I need a Time Capsule for TM backups and a NAS device for static data, but since I'm much more fluent in Win than I am Mac, I thought I'd ask for some education and recommendation here.
Probably time to cut my rambling post and get some feedback.

You can use common format drive.. although unfortunately about the only one available is FAT32 which is not at all a great format.
Using network shares is much better way to go.
You can plug the drive with all the pictures into a computer, a PC in this case of course, and share that drive with the network. The Mac can then access the drive, read and write files to it, over the network. FIle sharing on the network is offered with a few different protocols, but both Mac and PC can talk windows SMB type.
Same btw with a disk formatted on the Mac to native Mac standard HFS+ and plugged into the Mac and shared with the network. A PC and read and write files to it via SMB sharing. Simply because it is shared on the network.
Now a Time Capsule is a wireless router with a hard disk in it. The file sharing side is handled in SMB windows type and AFP which is a Apple Filing Protocol.. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol
The Mac can talk both AFP and SMB to the TC.
The Windows computer can talk SMB to the TC. So they have a common method to access files.
You can then plug a USB drive into the TC.. but it should be Mac formatted, HFS+ (in the mac disk utility this is called
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
The TC can handle FAT32, but that is still to be avoided.. it cannot read or write files to NTFS.
So the other aspect of this might be remote access.
If you need access to the TC away from home this is possible via the Apple Back to My Mac and iCloud system.
Read up about that.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3486
And the whole icloud thing.
http://www.apple.com/au/icloud/
You must use AFP for remote access into the TC.. this is a bit confusing but SMB is not offered to WAN side. It is too risky for one thing. And most ISP block it anyway. AFP is a much more secure protocol.
That means you cannot access the TC from windows machine.. not that I know of at least remotely.
Now none of this is impossible without a standard NAS from QNAP or Synology. Just google for those brands.. they are the most popular brands for this task on the market. They both can do Time Machine and talk to Apple computers without trouble.. they also of course talk to PC and you can share files.
It is going to cost more than a TC.. but it has the following improvements.
TC is designed primarily as a back up target for Time Machine. It has no way to back itself up. If you store files on the TC it can be difficult to back them up. Especially from the Mac side because TM can NOT read network drives.. only write to them.
Every NAS made has some method of continually backing itself up as well as raid system to handle disk failure. TC has none.
NAS will not offer btmm and icloud but will offer FTP SFTP and HTTP and HTTPS access to the WEB for remote connection. None are offered by the TC.
So there is some rambling. In response to yours.
Main point.
In Mac + Win world.. formats of disks are a problem. Neither can speak natively the one the other uses.
But Networks are the answer. Anything you wish to move or copy or share between Mac and Win is easy over a network, because they are then forced to talk the same language.

  • Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?

I have an external drive formatted by my MBP.  I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics.  Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

  • Setting up a 1tb (2-500gb) external drive to do backup and file storage

I bought a WD 1tb (uses 2 500 GB drives). I want to use one of the drives for backup and one for storing and working with large video and photo files. How do I set this up? RAID 0 HFS+ or RAID 1. Am confused about how to partition this so that one of the drives is a backup for reliability. Seems like RAID 0 would not allow me to do this and RAID 1 just mirrors everything on both drives.
    Help?

alright ... here we go ...
every drive has to be formatted ... whether you do or you buy it that way ...
most likely one is formatted NTFS, and the other FAT32, especially since you can write to one and not the other ...
did you use both with windoze ???
Mac OS X uses HFS+ but can write to FAT32 ...
what you are going to have to do is copy all the data over to your local disk and reformat the externals ... both of them ... using disk utility (in Utilities folder in /Applications - the Erase tab) ...

  • File storage question.

    Hey all,
I have a 250 Gig HD in my IntelliMAC. I also have a LaCie 500 Gig Firewaire drive hooked up. I can't figure out how to tell GB to use the firewire drive as my primary storage drive.... can this be done? it is automatically saving to my desktop....
    Thanks,

Wherever you save the project when you first start it, that's where it will be. Start each project on an external drive.

If you see  "Backups" category on the internal drive, it means that Time Machine is creating local snapshots. Read > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
Local snapshots are deleted when the internal drive is getting full, so you don't have to worry about local snapshots

  • Can I use one 2tb external hard drive for time capsule and file storage?

I would like to use time capsule, but also keep the hard drive on my desktop for file storage. Can I do this?

    Apple advises against doing that.
Any data stored on the disk that Time Machine is backing up to can not be backed up.
Plus the data outside of the Time Machine backup database cause problems when Time Machine starts cleaned up old backups to recover space for new backups.
For these reason it is advised that the Time Capsule disk be used for one or the other but not both.

  • I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup and external storage as well?

I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina
That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.

  • Time Machine and File Vault question

I just completed a clean install of OS x mavericks and then used my time machine back up to restore the mac.
The whole process was confusing for many reasons and I just want to get some clarification/verification on my next actions.
When I enter time machine preferences and click select disk. It gives me two choices. One in the group Back Up Disks and One in available disks. The confusing I have is that it is the same external hd. So which should I pick if I want to keep my original time machine backups?
The other question I have is, this whole journey started with me wanting to turn on file vault. I am using a late 2012 Mac Mini updated to Mavericks came with Mountain Lion.
Should I be able to use both an encrypted time machine (external hd) and file vault?
    Thanks for the help.

The difference is that do yo want to combine the backus you made before with the previous backups (group Back Up Disks) or start a whole new backup (available disks). Either option will retain the previous backups unless you overtly delete them. I would select that later to start a new set of backups.

  • Time Machine Fails When Trying to Backup Certain Files

Time Machine is having problems with some files I have copied from a Windows computer. I am a web developer and I moved my client files from a Windows PC to my iMac. Most of the files backup properly but some don't. When Time Machine tries to backup those files, it fails.
I downloaded Time Machine Buddy and it has helped me identify files that can't be backed up. However, the only solution that works is to delete the files. *Since these are client files, that is not an acceptable solution.*
When I look at "Get Info", there are several listings for admin, system, staff, owner, and everyone. Each list shows the permissions to be "Custom." I have changed some to "Read and Write" and I have changed all of them to "Read and Write." Neither of these have fixed the problem. Time Machine still fails on the same files.
I really need some smart Mac person to tell me what I can do to fix this problem. Thanks.

    Csound1 wrote:
Correct, at no time did I say that this was for everyone, it is in fact for anyone who wishes to spend his time working rather than restoring.
For most folks, a hard drive failure is not exactly common. If they are to you, something is seriously wrong.
Replacing a drive in a unibody MBP is a 5 minute operation! & they are cheap!
Yes, for those who are mechanically inclined and not afraid to open up a Mac. What percentage of users do you suppose that is?
As to your second point, I suggested specifically using a TM type backup in addition to the clone, I stated that my choice is a realtime service that stores my files (a) as files that I can access from anywhere (b) with versions (including deletions) going back as far as my storage limits allow.
And how would you use that to roll back to a previous version of your entire system?
I don't want to have to deal with TM permissions/user/network/extreme/forgetting to delete till it gets full blahblahblah
Huh? Now you're adding all sorts of other things.
Permissions? A user account is a user account, and Time Machine maintains the permissions.
Network? Your clone is on a network? How do you boot up from that?
Extreme? You use an Airport Extreme for your network clone?
Forgetting to delete until it's full? Yes, that's exactly what you mentioned above: "versions (including deletions) going back as far as my storage limits allow."
PleasePondini, do it your way and I'll do it mine
    Obviously.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • DB2 / Red Hat 5 : Backup to External Storage Failed

    Dear gurus,
    I've SAP ECC 6 running on DB2 9.7 FP2, RHEL 5.0
We can backup to internal disk, but when configuring backup to external storage (Maxtor Shared Storage II), there's this error.
I mount the external storage using cifs, with correct owner and permission (db2<sid> :  db<sid>adm with 777 permission.)
The shared storage is: //192.168.1.8/mhp with mount point /mnt/mhp
When I backup using DB13 to /mnt/mhp, the file is created and the size continually grows constantly.
But when the backup is about to finish, the file then disappears, and DB13 returns "Database backup failed"
I see the db2diag.log, and here's the entry:
    [db2diag.log|http://snipt.org/pYx/]
The message is not too clear for me.
Does anyone happen to come across the same problem as me?
    Thanks for your help.
    Best Regards,

    Dear gurus,
If it is plain file like copy / move command to the storage, it can be done successfully.
I can also 'touch filename1' there. But for DB13 or DB2 backup command, it failed.
Markus, there's no particular technical things. We just choose cifs.
I've tried NFS but it said things like "Connection Refused" when I tried to mount -a.
I've tried also in different server, and it actually give the same result. So I think it's not SAMBA.
May I know what you mean by mapping the user?
I can make shared folder in the maxtore webgui management, and create user to own that folder.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Error code 1007F after file with question mark?!

I have a 13 inch MacBook pro which is just over a year old. For the past week or so it hasnt been connecting to my university wifi network, eduroam. Then this morning, when it started up, I received a blank screen with a question mark flashing, which I know is an error with startup. I followed advice on here and got to the Internet recovery stage. I got past that and had to wipe my hard drive, and was in the process of reinstalling OS X Mavericks when I lost connection (it was tethered to my phone as eduroam wasn't working). I have since rebooted but when I get to the internet recovery stage I am receiving error code -1007F. None of the advice so far on here has worked. Please help?! (And please note that I am a 19 year old who has very little technical knowledge)

First, you need to get a reliable Internet connection, preferably Ethernet.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • What's the FASTEST file storage option ?

    Hi all,
Im building an application in Java where indexing and storing of data is a major area of the app. It should be able to store the data as well as retrieve them rapidly as well as the files should be small in size.
Knowing Java's popularity with XML, I've chosen that as one candidate, but the problem is Im not too sure how the above 2 criteria will match with XML.
    1) Is XML fast enuf considering retrieval of data ?
    2) And how about the[b] storage sizes ?
Or should I scrap XML and build my own version file structure such as a B-tree ?
How difficult would that be considering limited development time ?
    thanx in advance ....

Anyway to deal with this post piece by piece.
I agree with you that database infact rules out other
options when it comes to speed and storage. Im not in
anyway trying to abuse XML as a storage mechanism. If
I had the freedom to use a database, I know I wudnt
even hav posted this question, cos database wins
hands down in ease of programmin, maintain, store and
    rapid response.
Okay first of all my post was not a personal attack against you. There are plenty of people who abuse or ty to abuse XML as a storage mechanism with extremely unhappy results. I want to make that point clear not just to you but to any future readers of this thread so that if they are considering such a course of action they should come back to reality.
It wud be insane to ask the client to
to install a DBMS jus to make sure the P2P app wud
run. As for the details about the solution, it is a
P2P app, but not to share content as such traditional
ones. Its supposed to help ppl arrive at better
seacrh results on a Web Search Engine.Well this was dealt with previously. In short using JDBC does NOT imply a full blown database server. It could be a standalone database like Access or you could write your own driver that accesses a proprietary file directly or you could use a plain text driver.
The point is that if you use JDBC you decouple your application from the storage. This is the important point. Because it means you can switch the storage mechanism as best fits you later without having to rewrite gobs of code.
    >
As for the requiremtns, I need a storage mechanism
sm to store the rankings a user might have given
indivuidually per page or website. I need to store
them as well as access them anytime I want and share
them with the peers. Not only rankings I need to
store other deatils like the search string, the
datetime of the query etc.All the more reason to look at a database of some sort... an embedded database would be fine.
    >
I will let you know more of the requiremtns as soon
on as I advance onto it. Right now Im not
concentratin on the storage part of it. ( Jus
thinking of goin ahead with XML ) and rather
implementing the P2P communication area. I was jus
doing some research on what would be the best storage
option for dealing with the app's "data". I read
on a book that B-Tress and such data structures can
actually be implemented on file storage thus giving
better performance. And also I was looking for
material ( white papers and such ) discussing the
various issues of each storage option available
currently which will stand as proof for the final
    solution I am gonna take.
Okay here is the problem with all this. How do you think databases implement indexes?
Hint: while it is all in the end vednor specific the answer is some sort of tree structure.
So again back to the point if you want to write your own tree structure go right ahead... I think it's pointless but go right ahead. What you should do though is write it so that your application accesses this structure through JDBC so that later when you decide that re-inventing the wheel was not such a hot idea you can change the storage implementation without destroying your application.
