Backup and archive solutions?

Hi All,
I'm looking to implement a backup system for my servers. The requirements I have are that I have monthly mirrors with daily updates including file versions, this must then be archived to an Quantum SAS external LTO-5 tape. As budget is an obvious conern (I need to build 3 such setups), I would like to use a macmini server. My current thinking is to use a Firewire 800 LaCie Quadra 4TB for the daily / monthly disk backups, and a Magma Expressbox 3T Thunderbolt PCIe expansion chassis to run an ATTO SAS card control the Quantum.
As far as software is concerned I plan to use Carbon Copy Cloner for the backups, and am still uncertain about an archive package, can CCC do this also, I have used CCC extensively for automated backups, but have never used it to archive.
My worry is compatability between devices, the Magma expansion is not yet available on pre-order. I have also been looking at the Sonnet equipment.
Does anyone have experience with such a setup? and can anyone cost effective suggest alternatives considering the machine must be a macmini and the tapes must be to the Quantum LTO-5? also thoughts on software would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for your thoughts,
Nick

What's your thinking behind using a Thunderbolt <-> PCI enclosure and a SAS card?
Why wouldn't you just get a Thunderbolt-based LTO-5 drive?
That would seem to simplify the setup and reduce costs, especially since you're looking at yet-to-be-released products.
It also doesn't seem to make much sense to hang the drives over the FW800 ports. Why not use a Thunderbolt array, too?

  • I want to find any backup and recovery solution for SharePoint server 2013 enterprise

    Dear Expertise,
    Recent set up SharePoint server 2013 Enterprise, and looking for backup and recovery solution, does the built in Windows Backup can handle it, and how?
    KF

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to know some backup and restore solution for SharePoint 2013.
    There are two Technet articles about the backup and restore, you can have a look at them.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee428315(v=office.15).aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662536(v=office.15).aspx
    You can also use some third-part software tools to achieve the same scenario.

  • External hard drive speed for backups and archiving

    I'm planning to buy a pair of external FireWire hard drives to backup and archive my iBook G4. I've read a couple of product reports that compare read and write speed of hard drives which seems to be a function of each drive's rotational speed.
    I then noticed that my iBook's internal hard drive is slower (at 4200 RPM) than either of the external drives I'm now considering (7200 RPM and 5400 RPM). A test report I read showed the 7200 RPM drive duplicating 1GB twice as fast as the 5400 RPM drive when connected via FireWire to a G5.
    Will my slower internal hard drive limit the speed of duplication so that there is little or no advantage to the 7200 RPM drive over the 5400 RPM drive for me?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Probably should have been clearer in my initial question. The 7200 RPM drive I'm looking at is a desktop model, and a bit cheaper than the 5400 RPM drive, which is portable. I like the smaller footprint of the portable drive (and the convenience of it being bus powered) but don't want to pay more for those benefits only to be disappointed with its performance.
    So, I'm actually trying to decide between a higher speed/lower cost/desktop vs. lower speed/higher cost/portable. If I could determine that the actual performance difference between these was not very significant when used solely to backup and archive my iBook, I'd gladly pay a bit more for the convenience and small size of the portable.
    If there indeed is a big performance difference, I'd find space on my desk for the desktop drive and pocket the savings.

  • Backups and Archives

    I have a doubt about backups and archives.
    My database is in archivelog mode. Then I make a whole backup of the database.
    rman> backup tag='bk_level0_200809' incremental level 0 database;
    What happens with the earlier generated archives before database backup, can I delete them? or I only require to have the generated archives after backup?

    You will need only archives after first full backup.

  • RMAN BACKUPS AND ARCHIVED LOG ISSUES

    제품 : RMAN
    작성날짜 : 2004-02-17
    RMAN BACKUPS AND ARCHIVED LOG ISSUES
    =====================================
    Scenario #1:
    1)RMAN이 모든 archived log들을 삭제할 때 실패하는 경우.
    database는 두 개의 archive destination에 archive file을 생성한다.
    다음과 같은 스크립트를 수행하여 백업후에 archived redo logfile을 삭제한다.
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup database;
    backup archivelog all delete input;
    Archived redo logfile 삭제 유무를 확인하기 위해 CROSSCHECK 수행시 다음과
    같은 메시지가 발생함.
    RMAN> change archivelog all crosscheck;
    RMAN-03022: compiling command: change
    RMAN-06158: validation succeeded for archived log
    RMAN-08514: archivelog filename=
    /oracle/arch/dest2/arcr_1_964.arc recid=19 stamp=368726072
    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 에러가 아니다. RMAN은 여러 개의 arhive directory중 하나의
    directoy안에 있는 archived file들만 삭제한다. 그래서 나머지 directory안의
    archived log file들은 삭제되지 않고 남게 되는 것이다.
    3) 해결책
    RMAN이 강제로 모든 directory안의 archived log file들을 삭제하게 하기 위해서는
    여러 개의 채널을 할당하여 각 채널이 각 archive destination안의 archived file을
    백업하고 삭제하도록 해야 한다.
    이것은 아래와 같이 구현될 수 있다.
    run {
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape';
    allocate channel t2 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup
    archivelog like '/oracle/arch/dest1/%' channel t1 delete input
    archivelog like '/oracle/arch/dest2/%' channel t2 delete input;
    Scenario #2:
    1)RMAN이 archived log를 찾을 수 없어 백업이 실패하는 경우.
    이 시나리오에서 database를 incremental backup한다고 가정한다.
    이 경우 RMAN은 recover시 archived redo log대신에 incremental backup을 사용할
    수 있기 때문에 백업 후 모든 archived redo log를 삭제하기 위해 OS utility를 사용한다.
    그러나 다음 번 backup시 다음과 같은 Error를 만나게 된다.
    RMAN-6089: archive log NAME not found or out of sync with catalog
    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 OS 명령을 사용하여 archived log를 삭제하였을 경우 발생한다. 이때 RMAN은
    archived log가 삭제되었다는 것을 알지 못한다. RMAN-6089는 RMAN이 OS 명령에 의해
    삭제된 archived log가 여전히 존재하다고 생각하고 백업하려고 시도하였을 때 발생하게 된다.
    3) 해결책
    가장 쉬운 해결책은 archived log를 백업할 때 DELETE INPUT option을 사용하는 것이다.
    예를 들면
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup archivelog all delete input;
    두 번째로 가장 쉬운 해결책은 OS utility를 사용하여 archived log를 삭제한 후에
    다음과 같은 명령어를 RMAN prompt상에서 수행하는 것이다.
    RMAN>allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
    RMAN>change archivelog all crosscheck;
    Oracle 8.0:
         RMAN> change archivelog '/disk/path/archivelog_name' validate;
    Oracle 8i:
    RMAN> change archivelog all crosscheck ;
    Oracle 9i:
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all ;
    catalog의 COMPATIBLE 파라미터가 8.1.5이하로 설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 찾을 수 없는
    모든 archived log의 status를 "DELETED" 로 셋팅한다. 만약에 COMPATIBLE이 8.1.6이상으로
    설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 Repository에서 record를 삭제한다.

    Very strange, I issue following command in RMAN on both primary and standby machine, but it they don't delete the 1_55_758646076.dbf, I find in v$archived_log, this "/home/oracle/app/oracle/dataguard/1_55_758646076.dbf" had already been applied.
    RMAN> connect target /
    RMAN> CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    old RMAN configuration parameters:
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    new RMAN configuration parameters:
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;
    new RMAN configuration parameters are successfully stored

  • Strategies and alternatives to backup and archiving

    Please i will gladly welcome suggestions on where to find(documentation) and/or what are the alternative technologies or techniques i have in j2EE, for backing up and archiving files.
    Thank you in advance.

    Doing system-level tasks in J2EE is not a good idea. Use a system level tool to do it (like cron and tar on Unix).

  • Full Backups, Level 0 Backups, and Archived Logs

    We have an active Oracle server and a standby Oracle server. We keep the standby database up to date with a cron script. The script tells the active database to do 'alter system switch logfile;'. We then rsync the archived logs to our standby server and have rman apply them.
    This works everyday except Monday (of course!) and it only recently started failing on Mondays. The only change was that our Sunday backups used to be 'Full' backups but are now 'level 0' backups. Ever since that change, the first attempt to apply the archived logs to the standby server after the level 0 is taken on the active server gives us something like this:
    ORA-00308: cannot open archived log
    '/opt/oracle/flash_recovery_area/ORCL/archivelog/2012_04_16/o1_mf_1_60519_%u_.arc'
    ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
    Of course, the file is not there and doesn't exist on the active server either. And of course, the nightly level1 backups fo not give us problems applying archived logs to the standby database the rest of the week.
    The only way I know to recover from this is to apply the level 0 backup or take a new level 0 and apply it. After that, all subsequent archive logs just work. Any idea why changing from Full to Level 0 would break this? The Oracle docs insist that a Level 0 is identical to a Full except that level 1s can reference them as parents. This simply cannot be true based on what I'm seeing! I really want to keep the level 0 backups in play if possible. Level 1 cumulatives wont be useful without them.

    Here are the RMAN settings:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/opt/oracle/102/dbs/snapcf_ORCL.f'; # default
    I'm not sure how changing ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES would help. Can you give me a little more information about how that setting comes into play in this situation?
    I actually don't want an archive deletion policy here. We have this done in script three days after the needed archive logs have been applied. Is it possible that the we're deleting archivelogs too soon? Would we ever need to reach back in time to previously applied archive logs to apply new ones?
    The %u does resolve, but this message isn't showing it. Here is that same log entry plus a few previous entries that show it does resolve.

  • My Backups and Archive Logs

    Hi All,
    I have an Oracle 10G installation on a solaris host and at the moment, there are a lot of archive log files on the server, full level 0 backups are executed every week, and level 1 differentials are done on a daily basis, now the problem is that I have a lot of archive log which has not been deleted, I am not sure if I can delete it now.
    At the moment, the last backkup which was done today also backed up the archive log as well and the latest sequence ID is 2367, the backup done this morning covered the archive logs up till sequence ID 2351 - 2360. The oldest backup goes as far back as sequence ID 2070. I was wondering whether I can delete all archive logs prior to this sequence ID.
    Also, is there a functionality in Enterprise Manager that automatically deletes.
    I look forward to your replies.
    thanks

    If it's a simple "no change to existing scripts" sort of thing you are after, then just add another job to run after the existing ones, as follows (you'll want to follow whatever approach your existing scripts use - this is just a demo.):
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman <<EOF
    connect target
    backup archivelog all delete input;
    exit;
    EOFAnd add whatever error checking the existing script has (if any).
    Or, if changing the existing script/s is OK, add PLUS ARCHIVELOG DELETE INPUT to the script/s.
    And TEST it first, before putting it into production.

  • Backup and Recovery Plan

    I know very little backup and recovery plan in oracle using RMAN or any agent.
    Is this right way to summarize the backup and recovery plan for 24 X 7 system required to have 99.99% up time.
    The backup and recovery strategy recommended below is based on the premise that database is set ‘ARCHIVE LOG’ mode.
    The database files must be backed up using an RMAN backup (or tape agent i.e. Oracle Agent for Veritas) to allow for recovery of corrupted files or files on failed volumes. These archive logs and RMAN backups should be written to a directory on a separate volume from any other database files. It is not recommended to store RMAN backups in the Oracle Control files. The RMAN backups and archive logs and document images are then written to tape in accordance with the GFS backup strategy.
    Any suggestions and inputs would be helpful
    Thanks

    It was a generic note for the productions databases, i.e. have db in archivelog mode, take backups through RMAN to TAPE or on disk which will be used in case of disaster or media recovery.
    You need to decide what kind backup and recovery policy you need to have and where you are going to copy/place the backup.
    Just keeping in mind the following:
    1. How quickly the database can be recovered in case of disaster/media recovery.
    2.Make sure no transaction are lot, in another way, recovery until point of time.
    3. What kind of policy you need, incremental, cummulative or full backup.

  • Best Backup / Archive Solution?

    I'm new to the forum discussions and was hoping someone could offer some advice as to the best and easiest back-up solution in my situation.
    I work for a company that does not have a back-up solution for the 1 G5 mac connected to their windows SBS network. Yes, this is insane because this mac contains thousands and thousands of graphic files that go back 10+ years or so and probably occupies 80GB+ of space too.
    The company has a graphic artist that uses this G5 daily creating more graphic files. I am looking for the best Automated back-up solution that doesn't require the user to manually start a back-up and have to wait for it to complete - especially since there is 80GB worth of files. I'm not really concerned with backing up applications or program files, but more concerned with archiving the graphic files. I've looked online at solutions such as rsync, disk image files, raid with 2nd hard drive, and back-up apps with external drives such as Carbon Copy or Super Duper but wanted to get some advice from experienced mac users that may have dealt with my same issue.
    Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Basic Backup
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
    Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
    All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

    Hi,
    Solution Manager is dual stack system (ABAP+JAVA). Please refer this useful system Copy guide [How to System Copy ABAP and JAVA|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/f055cbd0-97f1-2a10-c09a-907b811de000?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true] to get more detailed information.
    You can use Database Independent or Database Specific method to perform such System Copy.
    You can refer this useful document [Homogeneous-System-Copy-using-OnlineandOffline-ORACLE Backup|http://www.basisconsultant.com/component/remository/Sytem-Copy-Guides/Homogeneous-System-Copy-using-OnlineandOffline-Backup/] to get step by step details. In Database specific method you will have to create JAVA export also in ABAP+JAVA stacks system.

  • Is RMAN only way to take backup and delete Archive Logs?

    Data Guard just configured. Archive Logs are properly being shipped to standby db. Is RMAN only way to take backup and delete Archive Logs from both primary and standby db? What other command can be used?
    Thanks

    No, but anything else is way more work. Without using RMAN you would have to find another way to keep track of applied logs.
    RMAN make this very simple :
    RMAN> CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;Using another method would be like using the handle of your screwdriver as a hammer.

  • Backup and Recovery from Archive Log

    Dear all,
    I implemented hot backup with oracle9i and
    Can anybody suggest me how to backup and recovery archive log ?
    Thanks for advance.
    Chara

    assuming you are using RMAN for backup -
    backup ( archivelog all );
    backup ( archivelog all delete input ); - to delete from file system.
    If you are not using RMAN but backup using a script which puts the tablespaces in hot backup mode then you just need to backup archive log directory.
    The archive logs are required when you need to do a database recovery. You don't recover archive log files.

  • DTA Purge and Archive (BizTalkDTADb) - is the backup part redundant?

    BTS_BizTalkDTADb_Full_BTS_2014_08_11_00_00_00_700.bak comes from Backup BizTalk Server (BizTalkMgmtDb)
    BTS_BizTalkDTADb_Aug_11_2014_11_35PM.bak comes from DTA Purge and Archive (BizTalkDTADb)
    Are these two functionally the same if I need to restore?
    Also, is there a way to set DTA Purge and Archive to use local time because it is creating the backups during business hours.

    As la Cour states, they serve different purposes and you can schedule the DTA Purge and Archive any way you want, once a day at 0300 for example.
    You could also do the same for Backup BizTalk Server so long as you would still meet any SLA.
    You also have the option to purge only on the DTA database, meaning no archive files are produced:

    Heat up the bottom rubber mat with a hairdryer for 5-10 minutes to loosen the adhesive, then pull the rubber mat away from the bottom metal plate carefully.
    Then use a screwdriver to remove the 10-12 screws to open up the case.
