Backup and Delete Images

Hi, I have MacBook Pro with 5 years of family photos and videos on it. I've backed up to a WD My Book Studio external drive. I can acces the external drive and see my photos, videos and files.
Since my MacBook is getting old and slowing down I'm thinking I should remove all the old images and that would help it's performance.  Feeling a little nervous about deleting such a large file of important stuff.
Is my thinking correct?

Consider using a regular backup program, or plugin like TreeSyncPublisher which will assure backups are deleted along with sources.
If you really want no junk in Lr's 2nd copy storage, then delete everything there (or maybe just the older stuff), after making such "true" (synchronizing) backups.

If you have multiple devices backing up to the Cloud, you will see all of them listed. You would click on each device to change what is backed up from that device. You can then delete your individual back-ups.
Once you have all your settings to your liking, you can then go back to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, and click on Back Up Now (bottom of the screen) to create a fresh backup with your new settings.

    Thanks

No, but anything else is way more work. Without using RMAN you would have to find another way to keep track of applied logs.
RMAN make this very simple :
RMAN> CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;Using another method would be like using the handle of your screwdriver as a hammer.

I want to reinstall an app fresh install from iTunes not from my iCloud, I go to manage storage I stop backup and delete app by turning green button off, but when I ask to download it again from iTunes it is only downloading it from my iCloud.
    Please assist
    Thx

You don't really delete app that way, that way to stop backup for that app in icloud.
You need to delete it from your home screen and then while it still will look like download from icloud - app will start fresh.
However if app uses any account sign in the stuff that is attached to sign in will come back, so if you do not want to you need to use
    fresh account as well.

  • Irritating UI "bugs" when renaming and deleting images

I have been using iPhoto for a couple of years now, and there are some minor glitches in the UI that simply frustrates the **** out of me in the new '08 version. Perhaps it's due to "wrong" usage, so please tell me if I can avoid them:
Firstly, I'm often viewing and comparing my images in fullscreen when cleaning up a large batch of vacation photos, but when I apple+backspc. to delete an image, it jumps to the start of the Event instead of showing me the image before/after the one I deleted - WHY!? This is only in fullscreen view - if I space-view it goes to the next picture as expected?
Secondly, there is apparently no shortcut for renaming an image, when viewing the thumbnails in an event or album. Numeric enter doesn't work (as ie. in iTunes), neither does (Windows) F2 or anything I could think of at least. Is there a shortcut that I just missed - please tell me!
This could seem rather minor, but my library counts 5800+ images, and I spend literally days in this program when I'm sorting new Events, so if these issues could be addressed either by an update or if I just need to know some little trick, I would be a much happier customer.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
when I apple+backspc. to delete an image, it jumps to the start of the Event
Yes, that's a bug that's been reported before. Report it at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html as the more reports the more likely it will come to the attention of the developers.
As far as renaming or titling in the thumbnail mode, you have to first click on the title so the title field is activated. Then you can enter any title you'd like.
You can also batch title files by using the Photos->Batch Change->Title menu option. This will rename them all the same or add a sequential number to the end of the title.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Controlfile backups and deletions

10gr2 RAC, ASM on Oracle Enterprise Linux.
Currently, we have the autobackup of our controlfile set to ON. Retention policy is set to 10 days (7 days to secondary storage and 3 most current in FRA). We backup every night to the FRA and backup the backupsets after 3 days to secondary storage. The idea being that if we lose the FRA in some disaster scenario, we can restore from our secondary storage. The problem we're finding is that the autobackups of the controlfile on the secondary storage get deleted and reused. If we ever have to restore from secondary storage, there is no controlfile to restore from anymore. Is there a way to remedy this? If I do an "include controfile" with the backup backupset command, does this "LOCK" the controlfile in place? Please let me know if further explanation is needed. Your help is greatly appreciated...thanks!

jjmdb, how about just copying the older backup set to tape outside of rman? You could then restore the tape backup to disk and from the disk restore the control file and using it perform recovery. You would also need to include the necessary archived redo logs as part of the backup set if the desire is to have point in time recovery points available for restoration to a new location for key periods like year-end, quarter-end.
Personally I see very little reason to maintain more than a couple of backups for the purpose of recovery of the production database. We would always use the most recent backup to restore and forward recover from unless it tuned out one of the files was damaged in which case we would go back to the prior backup and try to forward recover from there. If that is not successfull we would be in the situation where we be in the situation where we would be looking at one of the utilities that can read and salvage data directly from Oracle data files.

  • Photo Backup and Deletion

My daughter has a 16MB iPhone 5 and needs to free up storage space.  Clearly her photos are what is taking up significant space.  What is the easiest and safest way to backup and then delete photos off of her iPhone......and NOT lose any of them!

  • Crosscheck backup and delete obsolete;

    Hi,
on 10g R2 on a Win 2003. Connected to catalog and Target database I issue :
    RMAN>crosscheck backup
    RMAN>delete obsolete;
    FILE 1
    FILE 2
Do you want to delet the above file ? Y/N :YES
    Then again :
    RMAN>crosscheck backup
    RMAN>delete obsolete;
    FILE 1
    FILE 2
Do you want to delet the above file ? Y/N
I can not understand. If the first time I answered YES and the obsolete files where deleted why they appear again and again ?
Can any one be kind to explain me ?
    Thank you.

'crosscheck' has nothing to do with obsolete backups, this command checks for backups, which are still recorded in the controlfile/recovery catalog, but don't exist physically on disk/tape. The correct command after a 'crosscheck' is 'delete expired', 'obsolete' are backups no longer needed due to the defined retention policy.
I guess your backups are both , obsolete and expired, but 'delete obsolete' does not work, because these backups were removed outside RMAN. It could also be a permission problem, RMAN is not allowed to remove the backups on OS level. That happens on Windows, when shared drives are used.

  • Firmware Management and Deleting Images/Packages

I was trying to delete some older firmware packages and was wondering if anyone had an easier way to remove the associated images. If you simply remove a package and the image is still there you get all sorts of Major warnings (image-deleted).
It would be much easier if you delete an old package ie. ucs-k9-bundle-b-series.2.0.4b.B.bin that is automatically deletes it's related Image so these errors don't appear, especially if you have upgraded a few times.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/servers-unified-computing/ucs-manager/110475-ucs-firmware-management-00.html
    Thanks

Removing packages will reclaim space, and can only be done, if there are no more any references to images !
Exactly, I want to first remove the references so I can then delete the older packages. If not, I am left with annoying error messages referring to the deleted package...

  • Time Machine backups and deleted photos

I backed up my Mac to Time Machine using an external hard drive. This then began to run out of space and i received the subsequent warning messages.
Now comes the stupidity (I think), I decided to delete all the photos from my Mac in the thought that they would remain on the Time Machine. I'm now thinking that this is a horrendous error and I have lost all the images from 2009 (when I first purchased the Mac) to 2011 (When i did the above).
I apologise if this is so stupid that it doesn't warrent an answer, but I hope someone takes pity on me.
    Thanks

Sorry.. I keep thinking in the Time Capsule discussion area we are talking about TC..
If you copied the pictures to the WD drive then none of this would have happened.. it is the fact you deleted them from the Mac and assumed you would then have a backup inside the TM.
I know it is well after the event but Pondini in that same FAQ states with extreme clarity
    20. Once my Mac is backed-up, can I delete some stuff to save space?
NO,  NO,  NO!    That's a terrible idea !
See Q20. for the rest of why not.. the disk is slowly filled with current changes to file.. If you manipulate a large file it is backed up every hour.. it takes very little time to fill up the disk.. especially if it is so small.
Once full TM simply deletes from the backup what is deleted on the Mac.. since you obviously no longer think it important.
Actually you should read the whole thing about how TM works.. as it thins backups on a daily and then weekly basis, and there is no telling when it will delete your files, once they are gone from the Mac.
You don't have to copy the existing backup.. just buy another USB drive.. a decent size one this time.. and USB3 for future use.. 2TB or greater. And start a new backup to that.. Include the iphoto library in it.. but also copy the files manually so you have a backup unrelated to Time Machine.
Actually I would spend the money and buy Carbon Copy Cloner (or like backup software) as it does a better job of creating a backup of your files. You can also make a bootable clone of your existing hard disk.. that is hugely superior to the way TM works to get a dead drive computer running again.
Learn the lesson.. we all have to lose something before the knowledge we should backup is hammered home.. it is just sad it is digital photos which are so valuable and irreplaceable.. No amount of backup is too much for digital photos.. you are a few seconds from disaster and losing everything once you move away from films and negatives that can be reprinted for years and years.

  • How does TC/TM prioritize backups and deletions?

I've recently installed a 500 GB TC and have used it to set up a backup schedule for two Macs using TM. I also want to add some archival files (old and unchanging, currently stored on several external HDs) and at a point in the near future I will want to back up a third Mac which isn't available at this point. My questions:
    * Does TM delete old files on its own when it gets full to make room for new ones? If so, how would you run out of disk space as this support article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15137.html suggests?
    * Can I override TM's logic by directly backing up my archival files onto my TC hard drive? (In other words, I assume if I connect my archival files to my Mac and backup through Time Machine it will see these as part of my Mac at a point in time and will eventually delete these files, but if I simply use the TM as a hard drive would they be protected?)
    * Suppose I do run out of space and decide to delete some backups manually? Can I simply delete the oldest ones first? As a new user this looks like a risky practice because my first backup consumed much more space than any of the subsequent ones, which makes sense because those were just backing up changes.

So I guess I would have to manually delete the oldest backups from the sparseimage for the first Mac, to gain space for backing up the second Mac?
Some kind of preference setting for this would be welcome. If I start backing up two Macs, and continue to do so, then will they just compete about the space until full, will they occupy space 50/50 or dependent on how often backups are done?
Very strange that Apple does not explain how backing up several Macs actually works. I have posted feedback to Apple on this.
