Backup and DVD Burning Questions

I know Aperture uses "Vault" to store your "master" files. Does Aperture have an easy way of puting a copy of the vault on my computer internal HD and on an External HD?
Also does Aperture have an easy way to back up your vault to DVD?
Thanks Taylor

Hi Talyor,
I know Aperture uses "Vault" to store your "master"
files.
True, but more. It stores your "masters" and the adjustments to recreate the "versions," but without the thumbnails which get recreated when required during recovery.
Does Aperture have an easy way of puting a
copy of the vault on my computer internal HD and on
an External HD?
First, the assumption is that your Aperture Library is on your internal drive for speed. That means Vault is assumed to be on an external drive so that you have a secure backup if you lose your internal HDD or suffer file level corruption.
Next, both the Aperture Library and the Vault can be path'ed to drives/folders at your discretion, so yes, Vault could be on your internal drive and the AP Library on an external drive. Set the Library location via Preferences. Vault path gets set at the point in time when you create it.
Last, there is nothing built in to AP to "copy" a Vault to another drive. You could use Finder or Automator Folder actions to do this, or 3rd party file cloning/sync'ing utilities.
Also does Aperture have an easy way to back up your
vault to DVD?
No. Ugh. Shame. Miss. Arghhh! Needs full, project and incremental with 'fit to DVD' so that multiple DVD's can be used without being a math genius.
To my mind, step 1 in the workflow is backup masters to DVD, which cannot be done within AP. Both are needed.
Thanks Taylor

  • File name punctuation WILL cause MP3 and DVD burn errors – workaround?

OK, I’ve seen TONS of questions about problems burning MP3 format CDs and DVD. I’ve been having this problem for quite a while and today I just got ****** off enough to do some deep research. I seek to share my finding and suggestions for work arounds.
    THE PROBLEM
iTunes can burn regular CDs since the song file name is not actually put on the CD. The CD or DVD burner work for burning audio discs and with other applications. All the burn preferences are set correctly and have been validated. But when you attempt to burn an MP3 CD or DVD (for backup, transfer or for player that play MP3 discs), iTunes may do the following:
Checking media (iTunes will ask: “You have inserted a DVD. Are you sure you want to create a Data DVD? answer yes, it’s a blank DVD disc in a working DVD burner)
    Checking playlist
    Burning disc… initializing
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (xxxx).”
    THE CAUSE
Many times the error is due to song, album or artist names with unacceptable punctuation in them. iTunes does not tell you why and the error message and Google searches and Apple support/discussion forum details are sketchy… but in most cases its “illegal” punctuation in the song name, artist or album. I isolated at lest the apostrophe ‘ there are probably other illegal name punctuations too.
The cause my be explained by Apple following ISO or Joliet file name specifications or file name length specifications for CD or DVD discs. But since this appears to be undocumented (to the iTunes user) there is a need to understand the restrictions to allow error free disc burning.
    THE CHALLENGE
Even if the playlist name does not have punctuation, if ANY playlist song name/artist/album does, the DVD burn will fail. Removing the offending songs from the playlists results in a successful burn but hey, I WANT those other songs too!
    POSSIBLE WORK AROUNDS
Changing actual song file name – even if you change the name in iTunes (Get Info, Info, change name, artist, album) the actual song file names are not updated and continue to have the punctuation error resulting in a burn failure.
It appears that the actual file name needs to be changed. This can be a challenge. If you change only the file name you need to add modified file back into iTunes and the old file link is now broken. This is a bigger problem if that song file is in multiple playlists (the old ones are broken and the new one needs to be substituted). This is a REAL problem if you have 2,800 songs with an ‘ in them (like I do).
LETS WORK TOGETHER AND SHARE RESULTS
I’ve seen many, many unanswered questions about iTunes CD and DVD burning problems that will likely be solved if we can collectively develop and document a workaround. So, here is
    THE QUESTION
What is the best way to rename (or retag) MP3 song files to eliminate punctuation and update iTunes and playlists so these songs can be burned to CD or DVD without violating the undocumented illegal punctuation restriction? The work around may differ for OS X vs Windows users so help on both would be appreciated.
Thank you all in advance for your help!

been searching myself to create my own cdg for use in universal karaoke players. Kjams appears to offer the most hope for all I want to do. although there's something new now called Aria which promises to do a bunch of stuff for 79 $. Otherwise, all that I want to do as listed by the original poster, would cost me Kjams lite, plus the burn plug in is extra, plus I'd need the kjams producer as I would be building a cdg by adding the synced lyrics to something I've removed the vocal from, on Audacity program. if I go with Kjams, those 3 softwares, it will cost me 150, while I'm so jealous all those PC karaoke singers have free software for karaoke they can download.
I've been buying my cdg discs at 1.99 a pop, but they don't have special songs I want to perform. Aria for Mac might just do it all but I don't need the "scratch" sound they are pushing. that makes me steer away from the software.
experimenting with the Imac 10.6 idvd movie quicktime might work. I made a few cdg but have not tried them in the club karaoke machine yet. I added the lyrics to tuneprompter which is a free software that lets you add and sync the lyrics to the music with the spacebar. thats fun. but it's all in experimental thing so far. I know Kjams does not let you add lyrics and sync them yourself. you are supposed to import cdg to kjams that are already available and pay for them. in this case I want to find my own special tunes. good luck to you. there's one other thing but it's expensive. buying software which turns your mac into a windows platform by partiioning it and you start up in one or the other. that's also about 100-150 software.

  • Touchsmart IQ775-keyboard, mouse, front USBs, and DVD burner

My power went off and immediately back on while I was using computer. Now, my wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, front USB ports, and DVD burner won't work.  The computer doesn't recognize them.  I have tried reconnecting the mouse and keyboard and replacing batteries.  I tried to burn a recorded TV show onto a DVD--doesn't recognize the recorder.  The printer works--it is plugged into a rear USB port.  The touchscreen feature works.
Any and all help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

This does not sound good - to me, it sounds like the enumeration of your devices is corrupt in the registry - caused during the power failure.
If you can get to Microsoft System Restore, use it to go back to a few days  time before before the outage ocurred.
If that doesn't work, thenHP recovery is my suggestion.

  • Internal Zip Drive and Internal DVD Burner Question:

Where can I find an internal Zip drive for my b&w g3 desktop?
Or should I just get an external USB or 1394 Zip drive?
+(I have a 20gb hard drive that doesn't have its computer anymore and I connected it to a Gateway 2000 and the hard drive has Windows 98 SE with lots of files...jpegs for example...and I am going to get the files off of the hard drive before I erase it and put it on another desktop. The only way I can get it off is with a Zip drive. The USBs wouldn't work).+
Besides that one reason, I was going to get an internal Zip Drive for my Apple desktop anyways.
I have a DVD Rom in the apple desktop. I also want to upgrade it to a DVD Burner / DVD+R/RW or whatever it is called. Is that possible?
    Message was edited by: In-Correct

I have a B&W G3/400 purchased in '96 which I've upgraded with the PowerLogix 1.1 GHz Zif Upgrade. When Apple introduced OSX I also installed and ATA hard drive, and a few years ago I replaced the original Apple CD ROM with a Pioneer DV D-RW DVR-111D (which surprisingly burns DVD's faster than my new iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core2 Duo). The Pioneer DVD burner works like a charm. There were no issues at all when it came to the instyallation: rebooting, reading installation CD's or what have you. It was true, PLUG & PLAY.
    The G3 is currently running:
    1) OSX 10.4.11, on an ATA drive (Maxtor 6L100PO; 93.37GB) &
    2) MAC OS 9.2.2 on the original equipment 9GB SCSI Drive
The G3 cannot take advantage of the ZIF processor upgrade in OSX 10.4.11, and I am in the process of downgrading OSX to 10.4.9 so that I can take advantage of the faster processor. According to PowerLogix the ZIF upgrade is not compatible with a later version of OSX after 10.4.9 as they have been unable to keep up with the changes Apple has been making in the OS.
    I hope this helps.

  • External DVD Burner Questions

I am looking into purchasing an external firewire/USB 2.0 DVD burner with Lightscribe for my PowerMac G5. I have 2 questions: 1) Do Apple stores (at the mall) sell DVD burners? I cannot remember if I seen one there or not. 2) What burner would you recommend? I need one with Lightscribe and would like to have firewire. The USB 2.0 is not necessary. I want an external drive if possible as well. Thank you for your help and advice!

Be aware that lightscribe technology is still quite in its infancy and others have had trouble with it. In addition, any attempt to label disks often yields in unstable shorter-lived disks than leaving the existing label side empty. I use jewelcase inserts to keep track of my disks.
If you must get lightscribe, some Apple Stores do sell LaCie Lightscribe drives occasionally. I've not always seen it there, and it really depends on the stock. You can look up places like http://www.macconnection.com/ http://www.maczone.com/ http://www.cdw.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ for possible compatible drives. In addition, http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has a good drive database to search from compatible drives.

  • "Full-Featured" CD and DVD Burning Capabilities Included?

I'm currently running an old XP machine with Nero 9.  I'm purchasing a new ThinkPad W530 with Windows 7 Professional SP1 and the usual ThinkVantage software overlays.  My question involves the CD/DVD burning capabiliites are included in Windows 7 and/or ThinkVantage.
In burning CDRs I'm used to being able to specify details like the filing system (UDF and/or Juiet and/or ISO 9660), multi-session (start, continue, or finalize) or disk-at-once, keep original file dates, and verify after burn.  I have similar capabilities for DVDRs (single or double-level).
Is some of all of this included in the software bundled with the machine, or do I still need to delete or diaable that an purchase third-party burning software? -- JCW2

    >>I use imgburn, which is free.<<
I understand it is now bundled with "OpenCandy," which is apparently a controversial advertising program.  Is it **appears** possible not to **permanently** install OpenCandy when installing imgburn.  On the other hand, BurnAware Free apparently doesn't include OpenCandy, is probably easier to use, and might be good enough for my purposes... -- JCW2

  • ITunes Folder Size and DVD Burn

Not sure whether this is the right category. I'll put it in "iTunes", too.
    Got Sony DVDs. 4.7GB.
When I click on the iTunes folder and "Get Info", it's shows 4.6GB in it.
Try to drag and drop it in order to burn it onto a DVD for backup and get a message saying it's too large a file for the disk. I should delete some tunes.
Check the amount of GB available on the disk in Disk Utility. Says "0". Tried three of them with the same result. Not sure what this means.
Also: when I put the disks into the drive, the icon that shows up as a folder with a burn symbol on it. Not a disk symbol.
I'm really not sure what this stuff means. I could start deleting songs/albums from iTunes...but not sure whether that's the problem.
The file should be able to fit onto the DVD. (?)
    Thanks for your time.

When you burn a DVD or a CD a directory has to be created on it so that the computer will know what is on the media. This takes a certain amount of the available space. I don't know how much of the space it takes as it depends upon the size of the directory. With the total of your library being so close to the rated capacity of the disk there probably isn't enough room for a directory to be created.
You will need to reduce the size of your library in order to do the burn.

  • Final Cut Pro and dvd burning....

in order to burn a fcp project that is 95 minutes long on dvd (the burner software i have is Toaster) what is the best settings for me to use, on Final Cut and the burner in order to get the best image?
    thanks very much ~
    Kyle

I am deeply unqualified to answer your question except that I too am new to FCP and have had to face this issue -and have been hleped by this forum.
In my first attempts to burn a 90 min movie to disc I was thwarted by the fact that the compressed movie took up too much space - a fact that only seems to be revealed at the very end of the process, frustratingly.
Now I take my sequence with in and out points and chapter markers already in place, and go File Export in Quicktime - make sure you select Video only (and chapter markers if applicable). Convert to a QT movie which is quicker if you don't make the movie self contained.
Then go to compressor which seems to open the appropriate source media. In the setting column click the little pop up and choose DVD Best Quality 90 mins (or whatever) and choose the dolby 2.0.
This will save quite a lot of space on the audio side and may well allow you to get the full movie on - it has worked for me up to now. Once in DVD-SP you import the two files and combine them together on the timeline.
This is massively quicker than compressing the video file in Compressor.
What I don't know is how I will be able to get longer programmes on and what I don't understand is how we can all record at SP quality and get 2 hours onto a stand alone DVD recorder and yet struggle to get 90 mins on using FCP. Also I don't know whether the complexity of the sequence and the number of clips affects the size of the quicktime file - I would like to know.
You have now plumbed the depths of my ignorance but sometimes the blind can lead the blind.

  • Video Card and DVD Burner required

    Hi,
We are in the process of trying to build a preliminary Sun Solaris 10 machine that if we get everything to work, we will start to build more units for our customers. We took a look at the Sun Solaris HCL list for parts and our resellers are having trouble finding some parts because they are out of date. We need to find technology that will be around for a while. For that reason we have decided on a Motherboard with Intel processor and PCI-E support instead of AGP. Trouble with PCI-E is the HCL list has limited options and were unable to find the parts online.
Can anyone recommend some recent PCI-E video cards?
Also can anyone recommend some recent CD/DVD-RW burners?
If this is not the place to ask these questions could you please let me know where to go?
    Thank you.

    Cornelia,
Lennart's links are very good and informative. But one thing you should know is that an external DVD burner will not play a DVD - it only burns them. Since you want to view the DVD and pause at a particular scene and print it, you'll need some way to view your DVD. You also need a way to convert the iMovie project with the imported VHS footage, to a burnable format. iDVD can do that, but I noticed you have OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). If you don't have iDVD you'll need to buy it from the Apple store.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70901/wo/u13Sbz1 DQJRc2kZnHbi1QKZybZA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3 or you can buy Roxio Toast 7, but toast is much more expensive. For Toast go to: http://www.roxio.com/
You also need a media player so you can view your final DVD. I did some quick research and found out that none of the free media players allows you to print - which is what you want to do. There are quite a few free media players available, like Nice player and Xine Player, but you need Panther or higher to use them. Because you're running OS X 10.2, the only free media player that you can use is VLC media player. To download a free VLC player go to: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ You do need QT 6.5.2. or higher. So you may need to update your QT.
You can't print a paused image, but you can take a snap shot of the still image, then print that. Snap Shot=CommandShift4. This will allow you to select the paused picture in the screen, or if you like just a portion of that paused picture. It will save on your desktop as a picture. Double click on the Picture, then print that.
Then it sounds like after you've burned the DVD with your titles, you will need to connect a VHS recorder to a DVD player and record your DVD on to VHS tape.

  • Need Video Capture Card and DVD Burner Quick!

Here's my situation. I've created some movie titles in iMovie and have no way to get them from my Macintosh to my DVD/VCR to incorporate them in a tape I'm making. I need it like NOW as a lot of people are waiting for copies of the tape!
For some time I've wanted a device called a video capture card. It has the ability to play videos on your computer and you can print out images from them. What I want to do is make DVDs of my VHS home movies. I did learn you can't just walk into any local store and buy such a device; it must be ordered.
Desperation is a great motivator and finally (duh) I decided to look at a site specializing in Macintosh products, instead of studying every capture card online. Surprisingly, they offer three models: one cheap ($50-some), one at twice the price of the first, and a third at ten times the price of the second! That's quite a jump! Here's the middle one, which they claim is the best on the planet: http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~197329.asp
So, as I understand this, I somehow connect this device to my computer (Power Mac G4), hook a VCR to it, and then I can play videotapes on my computer. If I'm in a desperate hurry to burn DVDs I suppose my friend's DVD player will also connect to this device, or am I wrong in this?
Even if I am right (that a DVD player/burner will connect to this) I still don't see how that gives ME a DVD burner with which to transfer my videos to DVD! My combo player will make videos from DVDs but not the other way around! So do I have to run out and buy a DVD burner, and should it be any special kind since it will be used with a device connected to a Macintosh? I need this ASAP so thanks for any advice, or clarification to my understanding of how this process works!

    Hello,
I met the last days a lot of problems related with logical volumes.
    1) image disk which refuse to disapear when unmount
    2) CD which are duplicate once burnt (the both icons disaperar when one is ejected)
    3) Servers (anonymous ftp) who stays on desktop after disconnection
    4) DVD burning which begin with the message of the end : « completion of engraving » (in french : « finalisation de la gravure ») and the process abort.
    5) Asking information about the DVDs: they contains 1,3Go of data (they are new Verbatim DVD-RW!).
    If somebody have an idea…

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    1) If you are using a file or application that resides on the Disk Image then it will not unmount.
    2) If you burn 2 "sessions" with software like Toast you can end up with two CD icons that both eject when you take the single disk out. This is normal.
    3) ?
    4) and 5) Try burning disks at a lower speed and use media that is suitable for the older drives the iMac G4 has. You shouldn't be using 16x media.

  • DVD BURNING QUESTION PLEASE

I have an Intel IMac with the super drive. I'm not all that familiar with burning technique but have read up a bit on it.
What I'd like to do is burn a DVDRW with data and add to that same disk as new data becomes available; in other words multiple burn sessions on the same disk.
In checking I see I can use either +DVDRW or -DVDRW. First of all is one superior to the other for my system?
Secondly, will the burn software in OSX 5 support my multiple burns on the same disk or do I need third party software for multiple burn sessions? I'd prefer not to use third party software if possible.
    Suggestions and comments are appreciated.
    Thank you
    Dudley Henriques

Toast is a fine program, it is pretty much the standard every other OS X DVD program is judged by.
I don't do enough CD/DVD burning to Justify owning it myself, especially since I already own Nero
(The Windows CD/DVD burning program). I can burn CD/DVD's in Windows running under Parallels
    Desktop with Nero.
The only real problem with using Disk Utility is that there is only partial support (in the GUI Version)
for iso joliet (PC) based CD/DVD disks. The command line version (hdiutil) has good iso support, but
burning disks from the command line is a pain, even for me, and I do a lot of stuff from the
    command line.
I do see a copy of Toast in my future, whenever Blu Ray Disks become more affordable.

  • Upgraded memory but still running slow and DVD burner ?

    Hi guys.
I just got the new iBook g4 12' laptop in August with 512 MB. I just added another 512 MB today and system profiler recognizes it. However, I don't see any improvements in my speed. In fact, start up is slower since I added the memory and I have seen the beach ball numerous times.
Is there something I need to do?
Also, I just got an external DVD burner (a Pioneer R-110 Dual Layer burner and is recognized by my system. I have Toast (6.1.1.) however, I cannot seem to burn Dual Layer DVDs on it. Do I need to upgrade to the 7.0 version or is there a better software I should get for burning Dual Layer DVDs?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
Although the profiler recognizes the memory, it may not still agree with the system. Have you tried removing the ram and see if there is a speed increase?
If not, memory is a user serviceable repair and you may do it without voiding your applecare coverage. Now, here are instructions from Apple on how to do it. Please be sure you touch some metal surface before touching the memory. Do not touch any of the metal in the computer unless instructed to do so. Touching the metal will omit any static electricity in your body. Here is the link:
That should tell you weather or not your problem is the memory.
    Good Luck,
