Backup and import of video

I am having a lot of trouble with backup videos purchased on iTunes. I have downloaded TV series and music videos and backed them up on DVD last winter. However, I purchased a new computer in the spring and now want to watch some of the backed up TV Shows. They can be imported, howevers some lose their indexing and all show up as movies (I got around this by copying them to the hard drive and re importing).
The problem I am still having is that iTunes and the iPod read them, I guess as if they are not mine, so they go into the iTunes but then when transfered to the iPod, they disappear from iTunes. I think it is reading it as if it is "not mine". However, they are my own purchased backups.
I don't have the same problem with backed up music, just the videos. Anyone else run into this?

I agree that the wrong file system date is being used. But I scanned all my Lightroom files (manually) tagged with 'video'. When the file contains suitable metadata with a capture time that is used. When that's missing, the (wrong) file system date is used.
Interestingly I even found one camera where the dates were originally right (in 2009), then disappeared for a while (probably due to a firmware upgrade!) and then came back again. Summary of what I found:
Very old (Philips) webcam / format AVI / no metadata visible / wrong date
Canon Powershot A80 / format AVI / metadata visible / right date
Nokia N73 cellphone / format MP4 / no metadata / wrong date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2009 / format MOV / metadata visible / right date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2010 / format MOV / no metadata / wrong date
Canon EOS 5D Mark II around 2011 / format MOV / metadata visible / right date
So my conclusion is that the camera makers are making a bit of a mess when they introduced video. Nikon introduced its video a year or so later than Canon. I don't know if "no metadata" means that there is none, or that Adobe just doesn't like the format. But given the pattern of the firmware updates with Canon, it looks like Canon and Adobe ultimately agreed on the format. But in any case Lightroom (I am using 3.4.1) has a bug w.r.t. its fallback scenario of reading file system dates.
In my case, the dates changed when I copied all my data from one disk (old NAS) to a new one (new NAS). It is disconcerting that you get the copying date despite comparison tools declaring the files to be identical (Beyond Compare 3 also keeps an eye on date differences).
Hope this helps, Peter

Download and import YouTube videos to iMovie for editing
YouTube always provides people with raw video materials on all sorts of things happened worldwide in real time. Video lovers are fond of downloading these files as private collection, even using video editors like iMovie to do further editing of their favorite ones, so as to import them to portable devices like iPod, iPhone, PSP, Blackberry, etc. for playback, or upload to their own websites to share with others, or do something else as they like.
However, not all the people have found a proper way to download YouTube videos, not to mention how to add these files to iMovie for editing. YouTube videos are in the format of FLV, which is not a workable format in iMovie, so if you want to import YouTube videos to it without trouble, you should convert FLV files to iMovie compatible formats such as MPEG-4 and MOV in advance. With the special intention of solving these two problems, this guide will show you how to download YouTube videos and import them to iMovie for editing step by step. If you are in need, just feel free to go along with it.
Step 1: Download, install and run Pavtube YouTube Converter for Mac
This converter can process downloading and conversion simultaneously. Once you launch it, the interface below well pop up.
Step 2: Add URL, select output format and set save path
Press tag “Add URL” in the above interface, and then the following window will appear. Just copy and paste the URL of the YouTube video file which you want to download and convert to the text box after “URL”. Then select a supportable format for iMovie by clicking the drop-down list of “Convert To”. Here I choose MOV for example.
Afterwards, you can insert the storage file name in the text box of “Save As”, if not, the program will generate one automatically. Here I save my file as “mycollection”. Meanwhile, you are allowed to hit “Browse” in the opposite side of “Save To” to specify the destination folder. By the way, if you want to save the original FLV files, you are allowed to tick the checkbox “Save FLV File” to achieve this goal.
    Step 3: Custom
This program enables you to adjust video and audio parameters like codec, bit rate, aspect ratio, frame rate, sample rate, and channels, so that you can change them randomly according to your own demands. Generally speaking, the options which refer to values are always in condition of the larger values, the larger file size, but better quality. Do remember click “OK” to save your custom settings.
    Step 4: Download and convert
Once all the settings are done, you can click “OK” button to start. The following window will show you the progress of downloading and conversion.
Step 5: Import the output MOV files to iMovie
As soon as the YouTube video files have been downloaded and converted to MOV or other iMovie workable format, you can click “Open” at lower right corner of the above interface to find out the output files. Afterwards, launch iMovie, and click File > Import to add the output files to iMovie for editing.
    Tips:
    1. This program supports batch tasks so that you can download multiple YouTube video files in batches at a time.
    2. Pavtube YouTube Converter for Mac adopts multi-threading technology, which makes its download speed is faster than any other similar YouTube downloader.
    3. Besides YouTube.com, it can also automatically detect and download online videos in the format of .flv, and f4v from many other video-sharing websites, like Yahoo Video, Myspace, Google Video, Fox and more.
    4. It also provides users with conversion function, with which you can convert any YouTube FLV/F4V files to other formats like MP4, MKA, WAV, AC3, MKV, FLV, MP3, M4A, 3GP, AVI, MOV, MPG, etc. at will.
    5. If you only use it as a YouTube downloader without format conversion, you can take it as a piece of freeware.
All right, this guide is ending up now; hope it will do you a favor while downloading video files from YouTube as well as importing them to iMovie for further editing.

It's a clip from CNN (with all credits etc. added). When one refers to it as a clip posted on "YouTube", then people understand the quality will be poor.

  • Is there a note app that features encryption, folders, backup, and import/export?

    Hi friends,
I have been searching for a month for a Notetaking app for the iphone which has these attributes:
able to import/export notes from some form of text file suchas csv. I need to bring over a large number of notes from my android phone. I can perl-script and should be able to massage my data into any format requiredby any text-based importer. I would expect this feature to be based either on itunes or a proprietary sync program on a Mac.
encryption (not just a password), preferably AES-256 bit orhigher
features categories, tags, or folders (any one of these isfine)
able to backup and restore notes in encrypted form, in caseof loss of device
You would think this is a very basic set of features, but I have notbeen able to find anything on the App store that includes all of thesefeatures. If you know of any such app, please let me know.
    Thanks a lot!

There should be some utilities that might do that on macupdate.com if you search around in there. It could be done as a macro action in Photoshop, but that's an expensive solution for this. VueScan could also potentially do it, but is also not cheap.
Also, some of the utilities that come bundled with scanners may be able to do this, but only when running the scanner they came with.
Definitely the features exist on the Mac like auto-recognition of multiple images on a page, auto-rotation, auto-levels, PDF export etc. You just need to find them in the right combination in the right app.

  • The latest iTunes and importing home videos?

The earlier itunes had an import option under file, but the one I just recently downloaded does not. I want to import a video file (and it is in a format itunes would recognize), but I cannot.

drag&drop only works if the video is already compatible (like MP4, M4V, MOV). If not, you need a third party tool.

  • Grainy pics and importing other video

    Hello all. Couple questions...
I've tried to copy and save photos from the net, to use in between video clips on my project...but once I import the photo, and try to use it in iMovie as a photo, it's all grainy and pixilated. Any advice on smoothing it out?
Also, is there an ability to import existing video clips (from other saved or downloaded movies) and drop them into the middle of your iMovie project?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Faye,
as J told you, pics from the iNet are highly compressed AND often don't have the right resolution... a video (NTSC) is around 640x480 in size, so any smaller pics need a "blow-up" =>pixilated.
in case, you want to compare to best-practise, have a read here on Dan's excellent website:
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/video/2003.shtml
second, in the prefs of iM you can set the preview-quality of iM; and, you can judge the final pic quality ONLY on TV, because a computer has a different concept of displaying pics/stills/vids..... sounds silly, but if you give the pics in some pic processor as Photoshop a lightly blurr they look better on video!
concerning "usage of commcercial dvds" at first the disclaimer: respect local laws! esp. copyright, copyprotection etc..... the workflow is:
get for 20$ the Apple mpeg2 plugin
and for free the tool Streamclip
(with that combo you can NOT override copyprotetion mechanisms! ... but you do know how...)
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6018.shtml
Streamclip allows you to select parts of the dvd, and offers the right format for iMovie (dv stream)
hope you find this answer helpful...

  • UCS Backup and Import Specifics

We are opening up a new data center that will mirror our current one for DR purposes. We have three UCS domains in our current DC and will have three in the new one. If I take an ALL Config backup of my current UCS domains and import that backup to the corresponding domain in the new DC, what actually comes across to the new FI's? The Cisco docs I have been looking at could use some more clarification when they describe what comes across in the system and logical portions of the all config import to a different FI. I don't want to impact my current UCS domains, so I am looking to clarify that so it does not happen.

    Hi
I hope I understand your Problem: you would like to clone the UCS Domains from the existing DC to the DR site.
However, taking a full backup (with preserve identities selected), doing a Initial Setup on the DR site, and then Import the backup, will create duplicate pools (mac, uuid,....) and policies. This will give you overlapping mac's, uuid's,..... !
    Q. in your existing UCS Domains: did you make sure, that e.g. your mac pools are not overlapping ?
    Q. did you consider to use UCS Central ?
    Q. do plan to use global Service profiles and therefore global pools, and allow Failover to DC site ?
    Have a look at https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12259771/wwnn-and-wwpn-pools

  • Album backup and importing after formatting

I am planning on reformatting my computer in the near future, but I want to backup my photos first. If I burn photo albums to a DVD using iPhoto, will I be able to import those same albums (and the photos in these albums) after reinstalling? Or will I lose all of my albums but merely retain my photos in some random order? I am using OS 10.3.9 and iPhoto 4, by the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, since you said you were wanting to move your photo collection off of your startup partition, the instructions suggest by OT will only get you part way there. Moving your collection to a different drive partition will copy your iPhoto Library folder rather than move it. Before restarting iPhoto, you'll have to include the additional step of renaming your original iPhoto Library folder (or drag it to the desktop) so iPhoto doesn't find it when it starts. After you've checked with iPhoto to make sure the move occurred without incident, you can delete your original iPhoto Library folder from your startup disk/partition.

  • How can I connect a Sony DCR-PC110 video camera with iMovie and import my videos?

How can I connect my Sony video camera DCR-PC110 with iMovie in order to import my old videos?

    Hi
This Camera has three types of ports.
    - Analog-out
    - USB
    - I.Link = FireWire = IEEE1394 = Digital in/out = DV-terminal
And Your Camera only can send Photos via the USB-connection - NO VIDEO.
So You Must get a FireWire Cable and eventually a ThunderBolt/FireWire converter Cable to get Import to work.
There are no real way around this.

  • SCM 3.0 - Why does Exporting to GPO Backup and Importing back the same LocalGPO alter the settings so drastically ?

    What I did:
Specialize a Win 7 computer Baseline (Baseline A)
Export the duplicated baseline to the GPO Backup Folder.
Use this the exported GPO Backup within a MDT task Sequence
Create a new computer with this task Sequence. It completes successfully.
Export with LOCALGPO Tool the Baseline (BaseLine B
Compare to the Windows 7 SP1 Baseline copy - (Baseline B).
    Result (see pictures):
        Total unique settings compared: 317
        Total settings in common: 205
Total settings not in common: 112
Settings that differ (15): Just one exemple:
I ask for "Audit System events" Success and Failure (Baseline A) and the result is NoAuditing. Strange isn't it?
    Settings that match (190): Cool.
Settings only in  Baseline A (57) Just a comment:
There are a lot of settings with the value: No one. Are these values correctly exported and correctly positioned on the new computer?
Settings only in baseline B (55) Just a comment:
There are a lot of characters badly recognized. I think there is a problem with French Language.
How can I trust SCM with so many errors? What can I do to correct these errors?
I use Security Compliance Manager 3.0.60.0 with settingLibrary Version 2.0.82001

settings not being backed up in the GPO Backup.  I can live with that.
The other issues are attributed to flaws within SCM 3 regarding GPO Imports...hopefully they'll be sorted out by the team soon.

  • Oracle VM for SPARC (p.k.a. LDOM) export as backup and import procedures

    Hi all,
We have a new T3-2 and we upgraded the Oracle VM to 2.1. We use other VM technologies and with some of them you can export an image and store it so you can use the disk resources for more images. We have a situation were we need to use this server for mulitiple purposes at different times and we can't fit all the images on the server concurrently. Is there a good method for backing up the image so we can remove it from the server's disks and later move it back in. This is for non-production development purposes. I only see things about migration between multilple VM servers and not offdisk storage and recovery.
    Thanks,

  • Importing and organizing raw video footage - options

    greetings-
Looking for a better solution, if available, for importing & organizing raw video. I am using imovie for now. Soon to switch to FC express. After much exploring & learning on my new machine (recent convert), I’m a bit frustrated on how it video is handled.
Please correct any of these that I’ve got wrong, but it appears that:
Importing video (from DV camera) with programs provided on my machine can only be done through imovie and idvd.
Importing video through these programs requires creating a project, and importing the video to that project.
Then that imported video is associated with that project.
So I want to take the imported clips (say from imovie), and organize them archiving, use on other projects, backup, etc. I know that I can find the actually video files by control clicking on the project in finder, hit show package, and get to "clip 1, clip 2...clip 55". This represents the raw footage, but now I’ve got say 55 separate clips, for just one import.
I’d like to effectively organize my various raw videos by year/event etc. So that when working a project, a can pull in the different footage that I want to use. For instance, I previously imported and organzied video footage with my PC editing software, and now, thankfully, I can just bring that various footage from the external drive into Imovie and edit. If I want to do a project and grab some footage from 04, 05, 06, it's all right there.
Is there a better solution for import & organizing my raw video clips more efficiently with imovie or idvd?? Or perhaps another program. Such that I’ve got the 1/2 hr of video "Christmas 05", one file (not 40 seperate clips), saved, and can pull it into projects as needed in the future... Ideally maintaining the clip breaks. Am I asking to much from apple? How do you all import/manage/save your imported video?
    Much thanks for any feedback!
    20" G5 core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ciao Rubbersoul,
unfortunately iMovie doesn't allow you to rename the clips (other than within the project), so if you want to label them for future reference, you'll have to do that outside iMovie.
I personally save the best shots from each project to an external hard drive using the following method:
    • simply drag the desired clips from the iMovie project to the desktop
    • organize the clips by creating the appropriate folders (e.g. by subject, time, etc.), so you'll find your footage faster
    • rename the clips within the folders. If you don't need to give each clip a separate name, you can use tools like Renamer4Mac (http://www.power4mac.com) to batch-rename the clips.
    • transfer and organize your folders/clips on the external (Firewire) hard disk. You can do that manually or by using media browsers like iDive to organize and view your clips. iDive is a digital hub that can help you to keep not only your video but also music and pic collections under control, and it integrates with iMovie and FCE/FCP. Check it out here:
    http://www.aquafadas.com/idive-digital-video/index.php
Always remember that DV eats up a lot of disk space and don't forget to back up your footage to tape.
    spero che ti sia d'aiuto

  • Capture and import video from DVD

Just switched from PC to MAC. I have my travel videos on DVD's. In iMovie 08 how do I capture and import the video that's on the DVD into iMovie. I couldn't find any help on this topic.
    Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at Cinematize 2, I've used it with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
For the job you're doing you may prefer to use iMovie 06 instead of iMovie 08 (I would).
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Your workflow would go something like this.
Use Cinematize 2 to create a Quicktime file from the DVD.
Important that file into iMovie 06.
From iMovie 06, share to iDVD 08 (assuming you want a DVD).

  • Encore Cs4 importing Fullhd Videos

I'm using Encore CS4 with all updates of adobe, and import a video (1920x1080) in the DVD project, it just hangs. Have any explanation for this?
    My computer:
    Intel C2Q Q9550 2,8
    8GB ram ddr2 800
    Video: 9800 GTX
    Asus P5k premium

I assume you are referring to Adobe Media Encoder, and you should get the same results using that or starting from Premiere. It is important that you use the MPEG2-DVD preset, not the plain MPEG2 preset.
You didn't answer the audio part of my question. Make sure that you set the export for "not multiplexed" so you get separate video and audio files.

  • How to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 Mac version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video

My question: Is it possible to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 MacBook Pro/ Mac Os X version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video?
My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

    Hi
With the reservation of that I us:
    • iMovie 9.0.4

    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.
