Backup and listing of Zen Xtra

If you've spent a lot of time creating your music database on a large-capacity Creative MP3 player (e,g, 30 - 40 Gb Jukebox Zen Xtra) then you want to make sure you have a backup of that database if that MP3 player fails.
Considering the low cost of high-capacity HD backup dri'ves now (~ $20. for 500 Gb), this is a good solution and a compact HD dri've with USB connectivity with all your music files provides instant playability on any other computer.
Here is the approach I used:
- WinXP sp3 52 Mb RAM, 30 Gb spare HD space
- MP3 player: Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 Gb with about 4200 tracks (many MP3, many wav, some wma etc.)
- backup HD: 500 Gb WD Passport Essential
Using Zen Explorer (like Windows Explorer), select groups of tracks you want to copy from the Zen dri've listing (right area).
There will be some Creative "locked" files that can't be copied out from the Zen dri've. So just select large sections of tracks BETWEEN these locked files. You might be able to selecte multiple groups , but I find that it'sis a simpler way to do single groups at a time as it allows you to check the results on the target HD periodically and if there is a failed copy for some reason, it is easier to know where you are in the process.
Drag and drop the selected groups over to some target folder on the backup HD (e.g. H:\Jukebox). With a large database on your Zen, this will take some time. You can of course split the backups into different folders, but I opted to put all 4200 tracks in one folder ... with no problems with that many files in one folder (WinXP sp3).
When finished, do a directory listing of the backup dri've content folder to check the results.
An added bonus now is that you can output a simple-text complete listing of all tracks from this HD folder, e.g.
dir /B>mymusic.txt
which outputs a Barebones directory listing of all files in that folder to an output file mymusic.txt
Listing the files in Windows explorer in "details" mode also shows all the tags and file information.

  • Scrolling problem Zen Xtra...is it magnetiz

I went on vacation last week and put my Zen Xtra in our little hotel safe (which turned out to be an electronic safe). Let me start by saying that it has worked great for the past 8 months since I got it. We went away for the afternoon, and when I came back my player turned on fine, but when I scrolled down on my black scroller, it scrolled continuously. And one week later it still does that. Has anyone had this problem? Do you think it's been "magnetized" by the electronic safe it was in? I had one in an electronic safe on a different trip -year previously and there wasn't any problem.
The thing is that all the buttons work fine...i can press "play" and it'll play the 40-song mix I had on there last, the "volume", "track", "back" and "power" buttons work fine, AND I can press the black scroller "in" without problem, it's just when I move the scroller down or up that it scrolls continuously and can only be stopped by either taking out the battery, or pressing-in the "reset" hole.
I decided to try and just erase the whole thing because I thought I might be able to solve it by re-installing the firmware, but when I open it in safety mode, I have to scroll down to "re-load" and as soon as I scroll down, it again scrolls continuously to a point where I can't do anything else.
If anyone has had this problem and fixed it, i'd love to hear about how. Or if anyone knows someplace I can go to get it fixed, i'd definitely do that. Help!

I'm thinking that it has nothing to do with putting it in the safe. I think it might just be a coincidence and it just happened to go bad just then. I'd be more concerned about magnets near a hard dri've. As those two things don't mix very well. I think you might be able to get it fixed through Creative, but you'll probably have to pay for it since it'll be out of warranty.

  • How much would it cost to get a Zen Xtra repaired after the warranty has expir

Also, does it cost money to get it fixed during the warranty? I wouldnt think so, but just checking.

it would cost very little as think about it, it uses removable batteries so too many charge cycles can be easily remedied by buying a new battery. Also, although i own a flash player and not the zen xtra so cannot verify this, it uses standard 2.5" laptop hardri'ves that are not modifyed to not work outside of the player like in the Muvo2, so that is also easily replaceable. So the two most common casues of HDD mp3 player deaths have already been dealt with. If something else brekas and you are out of warranty ibelieve you have to buy a whole new unit.

  • Windows XP driver problem - Nomad Zen Xtra and Zen To

I have both a Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB and a Zen Touch 20GB, both of which were working fine with my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer until a couple of days ago. I had recently put firmware 2.0.03 onto the Zen Xtra, and was using the drag-and-drop method in Windows Explorer to copy loads of albums across to it from my music folder. It seems I might have tried to copy too much over at one go, because eventually the file copying just stopped, and I had to unplug the Zen Xtra from the PC to abandon the copy process. Since then, neither Zen device has been properly recognised by any of my PCs. When I plug the Zen Xtra into?a USB port, Windows brings up the messages: "Found new hardware: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" and "Found new hardware: MTP device", then brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard, even though firmware 2.0.03 is supposed to provide "seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" (I have WMP0.00.00.4036 installed). The Zen Xtra's display does not show the "docked" icon except when plugged into my laptop (running XP Home Edition)... but even on the laptop Windows still asks for a driver, which it then fails to install properly. When I plug my Zen Touch into my PC, it detects that an MTP device has been connected, but Windows Media Player doesn't list it under the Sync tab, and when I try to install the "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative Zen Touch Players", the installer complains that "Setup could not detect any portable device on your system... please ensure that Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed". The device's firmware version is 2..0, and as I have already said, both this and the Zen Xtra were working fine with my PC up until a couple of days ago. Additionally, the "docked" icon?no longer appears?on the Zen Touch's display when plugged into the PC. I have made the registry change suggested in Creative Knowledge Base Solution ID #9287, and my PC is up-to-date with Windows Hotfixes. I've also tried uninstalling all Creative programs and reinstalling them one at a time, but I can not get my PC to correctly work with the Zen devices anymore. Any suggestions? Also, is there some kind of Factory Reset that I can do to get my Zen Xtra back to an earlier firmware?

I had the same issue. My battery ran down during a sync, then I was unable to sync again.
The Zen is showing up fine in the device manager, but none of the software (Media Player, MediaSource) sees it.
Finally, after a day of trying new drivers, running cleanup, etc. I decided to go into the Zen's recovery menu. To get there, press and hold the Play button and press and hold the reset (use a paperclip) button while powering up.
Once there, select the first option in the menu to Clean up the system. I forgot what it's called and I'm in the middle of a sync now, so can't look.
    Worked fine after that. Phew!
If your device is being detected fine, but cannot sync, try that and post here if it fixes it.

  • Problems downloading between Nomad Zen Xtra 40GB and PC (XP S

    Help please
I've a new Zen Xtra and have installed all the software that came with it and then reinstalled as per the instructions given in another post.
I can see no sign of the drivers under the device driver although, not always, the PC pops up a message saying 'do i want to organise'. I can see my Nomad files in Nomad Explorer and Windows Explorer. i can even, sometimes, after each software reinstallation, even transfer a few, about 0 to 20, files before i get an error message telling me thw player is busy or disconnected. I have left the connection in place overnight but still no celarance.
Any ideas as I really feel like throwing the bloody thing out the window!

    Guys
Thanks for your responses. Sorry I haven't got back - been away a few days.
    Situation is this.
new Nomad Zen Extra and Dell 3000 running XP SP2 52mb ram 40gb dri've.
Loaded software with Nomad and unable to sync or transfer. PC could 'see' nomad and read preloaded files but when any form of transfer tried I either got 'device not connected' or, occasionally, a few files would transfer before 'hanging'. Erroe message stated'device busy or not connected'.
Since then I have followed these instructions given in another reply on this forum to the letter.
<SPAN>Here is a step by step of what I would do to try to get back to square one and get MediaSource and the Driver installed.
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>) Disable any antivirus and background programs on your system and disconnect the Jukebox from USB

    <SPAN>6) Reboot
    <SPAN>7) Repeat step 5
<SPAN>8) Go to www.nomadworld.com and go to downloads/drivers and applications. Select the Jukebox Zen USB 2.0 and your version of Windows. Click get files. Download four files:

<SPAN>9) While these are downloading, go into rescue mode on the player and run a cleanup. A reload OS will hopefully not be needed.
<SPAN>0) Install the files in the above order. You will plug the Jukebox Zen in at the end of the driver install to complete the install. Leave it connected all the way through the remaining ste

<SPAN>So I think of all the up-to-date firmware etc...
<SPAN>I've also loaded and installed WMP 0 - which can also see the Nomad and has transferred a few files before hanging as above...
<SPAN>I can also see the driver in my device drivers under usb controllers. the driver listed is Creative Labs .26.2.0
<SPAN>I have managed to transfer my tracks (3500+) to the Nomad by burning as MP3 cd's and loading through my works laptop (Win2000). I used the Creative Media Source on the original software which came with the Nomad to do this. This is not a great solution as my company aren't thrilled about such use of their lappies and it only has a 0gb hd and, therefore, doesn't / can't hold my music library.
<SPAN>I really want to get it working properly on my main PC so I can get the max from the Nomad.

  • My Zen Xtra sucks. Really hard to transfer files to and from

It's kinda old (big clunky Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra, 30 gig). When I got this laptop in August, I downloaded some software to allow me to transfer files from it (I had broken the CD that came with it).
The media source thing won't recognize my mp3 player at all. The Nomad Explorer works, but files transfer EXTREMELY slow, it takes like 0 minutes just to open a folder, and usually a file transfer or simple opening of a folder will fail (It basically takes me half an hour to get into my DATA folder, and even then, I can't transfer stuff out of it, because it freezes up and fails half the time).
I tried just accessing it as a USB device through windows XP, and that also won't work. Windows XP can't see my DATA folder, and it also can't get files out of my mp3 player.
So, any help? Do I need new firmware? New software? I'd like to backup all my music onto my laptop (I don't even use the MP3 player that much anymore anyway, mostly because of the issues I've been having.) and reorganize it, etc.
Direct links if you help please.

Unfortunately it's unavoidable if you're going from a .x (PDE) firmware to a 2.x (MTP) firmware, the change is quite big and it has to format the player during that process. Did you try just reloading the .20.08 firmware? Have you updated to the MTP firmware now (and formatted the player)?
It's always best to keep a back-up of your music so you can easily transfer them back again.

  • Zen Xtra 40 GB buttons and jogwheel suddenly unresponsive

My Zen Xtra 40 GB worked for almost exactly a year, then broke. The jogwheel and buttons do nothing. The hard dri've is still intact -- I managed to copy all my tracks to my PC as a backup. The reset/paperclip button works, and the power button will turn the player on but not off. It really is bizarre -- everything seems to be in order, but the player just won't take input.
I've loaded the latest firmware onto the player, changed batteries... really I've done everything short of take the machine apart.
I've been in contact with Creative support, but they stopped responding after a while. Anyone know what needs to be done?

I had this exact same problem with the scroll wheel recently. Luckily I have solved the problem thanks to users here and on Nomadness.net. In fact my only posts on this board are because of this annoyance.
I was also having the scroll wheel pausing tracks and playing tracks when it shouldn't have been doing that.
For me it came down to hardware. I actually got my Xtra aroudn the same time you did and only a few weeks ago did I finally fix it. It was going on for about 2 months, and it just got to the point where I didnt want to use the player because it became such a hassle.
What I did was go to Radio Shack and get a can of Switch Electronics Cleaner. It was like 0 bucks or so. I also got a pack of .4mm phillips head screwdrivers as I was going to open the unit and fix it that way but to my dismay and maybe for the better the screws wouldnt budge on the unit. I then took the little straw thing that can attach onto the end of the spray nozzle and sprayed a small amount (one split second spray) right onto the side of the unit by the scroll wheel. The cleaner is safe on the plastic. I then worked the scroll wheel back and forth so the stuff would get into it and lube it nicely.
I fired up my player and at first it still had the problem, but literally after about a minute the problem was gone. I use my player all the time and since doing this not once have I had the scroll wheel acting as the play/pause button. Its back to what it was like when I first bought it.

  • Anyone selling a Zen Xtra case/pouch? ....And thoughts on which case to buy.

Wondering if anyone has an extra Zen Xtra pouch or case they want to sell... perhaps someone's got an extra after using an older nomad for parts or something?
I've heard a case is key in protecting the case from dents
I have some hope that maybe it will limit the cover popping off as well
Also, wondering if there are any cases/pouches people would recommend staying away from.
It looks like some don't have a window for the display - that's something I think would be helpful
Ideally I'm looking for one that can be used, plugged in etc without having to come out of the case period
    Any feedback would be appreciated

Can anyone please recommend what else I would need to get with it? Memory card, but how much? The maximum gigabytes?
As much as you can afford! According to the Sonystyle site I linked to in your other thread, these are the recording times for that camera at the _highest quality HD setting_
Remember also that this camera has a 16GB internal flash memory, giving you an extra 1 hour 50 minutes. If you can afford it, go for the 16GB memory stick. I don't think the camera comes with one. If you get the 16GB stick, you'll have a total of 3 hours 40 mins. You can always get extra sticks later, as required - plus they can be erased and re-used of course (after archiving!).
    QUESTION:
Looking at the kinds of memory sold on Amazon.com, and even remembering the array of them at stores like Best Buy, I know that there are many KINDS of memory to choose from, and I do not mean gig power or brands. SD, SDHC, ETC ETC. I remember not knowing what to choose from.
*What do you recommend? When I go to Best Buy or to Amazon.com and I see all of those different classifications of memory WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY?*

  • Zen Xtra-Failure to uninstall and what to reinsta

My Zen Xtra (USB on XP) worked perfectly until the sudden failure of CMS to load a new playlist. The Zen itself still works fine. So I thought a quick uninstall reinstall would be reasonable but a 23. MB "Creative" file in "Program Files" would not uninstall.
Should I ignore this or how can I uninstall it's
There are now more files on the Creative Download site: 2 driver files, 2 firmware files and 2 other download files, many more than before.
    Should I install them all?
    Thank you.

Lost my contacts list and try to restore from backup and it ask for my password to unlock my iphone backup. I don't remember creating a password for it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If you encrypted the backup, there is no way around it. You will need to configure your iPhone as a new device.
    From iTunes: About iOS backups:
In the iTunes Summary screen, select "Encrypt iPhone backup" if you want to encrypt the information stored on your computer when iTunes makes a backup. Encrypted backups are indicated by a padlock icon, and a password is required to restore the information to iPhone. You may want to write down the password for your backup and store it in a safe place. If you use a Mac, when you set a password you can select to store the password in the keychain. With iOS 4 and later, you can transfer the iOS keychain backup to a new device if you encrypt the backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

  • Cases for the Zen Xtra and which online servi

I just bought a Zen Xtra 30 GB and would like to get some safe way of carrying it when I jog. Either a fanny pack or arm band. Has anyone seen these. If so where? Also what online services work with this device. I saw Napster works directly with the micro.

I've not seen either specifically for the Zen, but I'm sure you can get a generic belt based case from something like a camera shop. Or use a case e.g. Vaja, that has a belt connector.
Currently the Xtra will support any service that uses normal WMA DRM (or of course the very few that use MP3). It won't support PlayForSure (and Janus DRM) yet, but a new firmware is supposed to bring this. See the FAQ.

This concerns problems with Vista and the Zen Sleek Photo mp3 player. The Zen software is not compatible and won?t install.
After receiving some information from ?Creative, and after some further experimenting on my own, I have put together a procedure that will, in fact, do a full install of the Zen Sleek Photo on a machine running Vista.
I have also discovered that this installation procedure also works for my Nomad Zen Xtra ? an unexpected bonus!
It worked for me, and I have received feedback from several dozen people already who have used this procedure with 00% success, so I know that it works!? I am currently getting three or four requests daily for this, and most have been kind enough to follow up and let me know that it solved their problem.

When I went to update the firmware everyone was going good and then it rebooted and stayed at the recovery menu and just stopped. I tried reconnecting it and it registers that it is connected to the USB for a second then it says device not connected. How do I get it connected again, or what am I doing wrong. I just want to update it so I can use it on my Xbox. How do I get it to update right? Thanks.

    Manning888,
Which firmware are you referring to Assuming you are referring to the PlayForSure firmware, make sure you have Windows XP with at least SP and WMP0 installed. Also, you can try looking into this Knowledgebase article SID0053.
