Backup and Sync

I sync my iPhone with two computers:
1. Home computer: all music and apps
2. Work computer: all contacts, appt's, to-dos, (Outlook).
Currently I back up on both computers, is this proper? What if I lose everything on my phone, which computer should I restore from?

The home machine, but you'll need to sync to both to reload your full content in any case. The backup includes, +"...mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, certain network settings, and other preferences including settings and data from third-party applications purchased from the App Store."+ It doesn't include iTunes-managed synced content (music, calendars, etc.).

The reason I'd recommend the home computer is that 3rd party app data is part of the backup, and you'd probably want that restored.

  • ITunes will not let me backup and sync to new phone encrypted password??

iTunes will not let me backup and sync to new phone encrypted password?? I've never set a password for my old iPhone 3gs but tried my old Apple ID sign-in passwords to no avail. I've simply sat here so frustrated....my husband sync'd his new iPhone 4 no problem, somehow the checkbox shows Encrypted password and I'm at a loss on how to change this/find the password and transfer my old backup onto my new phone so I can use it. Can anyone help? Tnx

    John,
buy an iTunes Music Card and redeem it to your account - the "none" option should be available then.

  • What happens at each step of an iPhone Backup and Sync?

Can someone tell me exact what is happening at each step of an iPhone backup and sync?
    I see 5 to 7 steps.
So what has happened after step 1, then after step 2, and so forth?
I would appreciate if only those who knows exactly what happens will list it in their reply.
Please don't tell me to google the question, or point me to a link. I tried all those steps, and I could not find the answer.
If you can't tell me precisely what happens after each step of a sync, please don't reply.

  • Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes

Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes. Have tried to hard reset iPhone (all data lost- sad) and reinstalled iTunes. Still cannot work.

It sounds like you bough the song only, not the song and the ringtone.
Ringtones via itunes are available in the U.S. only.
In the U.S. to make a ringtone you:
Buy the song with a bell - 99 cents
Find the song in your library and click the bell
    This bring up the editor.
You edit the song to the portion you want.
Then click buy to purchase the ringtone - another 99 cents.
Then it shows up in ringtones and you can sync.
As I said, this method of creating ringtones is available in the U.S. only.
There are, however, many ways to make ringtones:

  • When trying to backup and sync my ipad and iphone with itunes the device does not appear int he upper right hand corner anymore

when trying to backup and sync my ipad and iphone to itunes it does not appear in the upper right hand corner under devices for me to click on

In that same window - the one where you see your backups - click on the box at the bottom that say -Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads form syncing automatically. Then click OK and quit iTunes.
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select - Restore from backup. A window will pop up from which you can select any of the backups that you have for the iPad. Select the backup that you want to restore from and then go agreed and restore the iPad. Sync with iTunes when you are done.
Remember that when you restore from a backup - you restore everything in that backup to the iPad. You cannot selectively restore content. It is all or none.

  • Should I do a backup and sync before IOS4 upgrade?

I have yet to do an upgrade to IOS4 on my 3GS. Given the issues with the upgrade process, would it make more sense to do a backup and sync before I proceed with the upgrade process? It's been about 3-4 months since I've done a backup and I'm currently running OS 3.1.2.

Thanks. I tried to do a backup recently during a sync, started around 11pm one night, went to bed at 1am, then woke up at 6am only to find it still backing up. I ended up clicking the little "x" up in the top window just to let it sync up. I'm really not looking forward to having to go through this backup routine, I still am perplexed as to why a backup should take so long to do (I have about 8MB on my 16MB 3GS).

  • Backup and sync iPhone with broken screen

I recently dropped my iPhone 5s and broke the display.  The phone itself is fine; I can still hear it receive text messages and emails but the screen iself is blacked out.  I am assuming that it is a hardware problem.  Anyway, my friend tried to reset by pressing the home and power button.  Now, whenever I plug the phone into a charger or my computer, the phone emits an incessant beeping noise every 5 seconds.  What is this noise?  And also, I can no longer use features on my phone like Siri and such after my friend tried to reset the phone.  Is my phone broken?  I cannot really tell if this is a problem that can be fixed with a new screen or if there is something worse wrong with my phone.
Additionally, I have tried to backup my phone by connecting to my computer but it doesn't allow a backup to take place because it needs a passcode to be entered on the phone itself which, of course, is impossible since my display is broken.  However, I was able to synchronize my phone to my computer.  My question is that, if I get a completely new phone, can I restore to a previous backup and then synchronize to the most recent synchronization?  Also, if you have any knowledge on the other questions, I would greatly appreciate some information.  Thanks!

    Hello,
I apologise if this is a really stupid question.
I last backed up my phone a few weeks ago, carried on taking pictures with it etc, and then dropped it, breaking the screen which turned black with a single white line down the middle.
I can receive calls by guessing where to swipe so it is sort of working.
A new iPhone is in the post, but I can't back this phone up because I get the following message when I try:
"iTunes could not back up the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be backed up."
I have been searching the web, but can't find a way to unlock the phone.
So (unless anyone has a genius idea, in which case I will love them forever), what will I lose if I don't sync?
I don't think I should lose the photos I took since my last sync, since Photostream should take care of that, no?
    Many thanks, C
There is no way for you to backup with a broken screen.
You will lose whatever wasn't backup.

  • Feasbile to use TC as backup and sync platform?

    Hi,
I got a Macbook (1,5 year old) and an iMac (less than 1 year old), a time capsule (500gb) (which I also use for Time Machine backups) and some other stuff.
The big deal is that I use the two Mac's as "one" computer, which means that I would like especially iTunes and iPhoto to be the same on the two Mac's.
Should I use the Time Capsule to host the libraries and then have the two Macs sync with that? Can I place the files there for both Mac's to access? (If I do - where do I back up to?)
Or should I use iDisc or a combination or?
    Thanks for any pointers.

you can use TC for a common file holder for multiple Macs. I would not base my only copy of anything on the TC. Some other backup means is in order.

  • Backup and Sync: iTunes

If I did a backup at 1:00PM, then changed some settings and backedup again at 5:00PM, can I restore back to the 1:00 backup?
    Thanks-

You probably need more free space on your phone, not in your iCloud account.  (Additional iCloud storage doesn't increase the space on your phone.)
Check Settings>General>Usage to see how much available space you have.  If you need more and your music is in your iTunes library, delete your music by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipe across All Music, tap Delete.  Then back up and sync with iTunes, and sync back the music you still want on your phone.

I just bought more icloud memory for my iphone 5...because it said i needed 1.4 gb of space to backup... It would not let me sync my iphone on itunes.  I still can not back up..What should I do?  I guess no reason to buy that 10 GB from itunes.

  • Difference between backup and sync ?

What is the difference between a backup and doing a sync ?

backup is part of the sync procedure. If you uncheck the "Sync contacts to.." box under the phone info, special field names used in the contacts list won't get lost as they will if iTunes tries to stuff your contact fields into some address book on your host computer. Create a contact with a few phone numbers like "Main" and "Support" and "Shipping" as additional phone numbers. Do a SYNC, and check your address book on the host computer. You'll find that data is simply gone for these additional phone number fields.
Apparently if you don't SYNC to an address book, the sync/backup procedure saves the special fields in the backup directory. Maybe it even saves these fields if you backup using the SYNC approach, but this isn't the impression left by 2nd level tech support. Their solution is to get mobile me to keep your contacts list from getting corrupted or losing data.

  • Online storage/backup and Sync to several systems  - Elements 10

I have paid my money and eagerly await arrival of Elements 10 with the postman
I was enthused to buy it for some of the editing features which are better than v7 i had.
I was even more excited to know all my woes and hates of Google Picasa online storage and syncing were going away!!!!!
    Or so I thought
I had not realised that as I work for an American company I was reading the American website and for some unfair reason they get options to buy more than 2gb storage and they get syncing of online to various PCs and backups and goodness knows what else; while we non-US poor souls in the wastelands get what seems like almost nothing
I know I can't use my 80gbs of Google Space. I have 50Gb on Box.Net that was free because I bought a HP Touchpad (long live WebOS as its awesome compared to the rubbish that is Android my new company phone runs).... sorry I'm digressing...... the Box.Net doesn't have any syncing and i know nothing of its security, but maybe its an option.
    So, I can't be the only working father in the world who wants;
to use his company laptop as the onboarding for all the cameras
then to seemlessly have a secure backup made somewhere in the cloud  and possibly to my 2TB NAS as well?
or  a copy of everything uploaded to online web album but as full size photos (one good thing about Google) which would replace the Backup need maybe?
now the tricky bit, I then want my wifes PC and 2 others used by my children to be able to view (not edit or delete) all our photos, probably the online set synced to their PCs
then i want to be able to see them also from the touchpad
finally I want to be able to 'share' some albums/photos to the rellies and Facebook
As my wife would say "surely it's not to much to ask that this stuff just does what we want?"
How does everyone else cope if we are hoest that I am hopeless as manual backups etc.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
ps. i had thought to try registering my new software with a new email address and giving US address etc.......... would that get me the extras/

Ah... as per my 1st post, I am a new user to Elements.    Apologies,  I have been approaching this from the wrong direction!   I have checked back on my original XP disk and Elements catalog, and it appears that when I set up the original catalog against my existing pics it did not include any duplicate files, therefore the Backup\Restore is correct, it is the original cataloging of my pictures that did not work as expected.     Do I have to do anything specific to get the catalog to include duplicate file names?
    Sorry for the misdirection
    Steve
    Steve,
The basic rule of database management is to forbid duplicates.
In the case of the Organizer, that would mean changing one of the two above criteria (date daken or file size in kB). That would be possible outside of the Organizer by using external tools, but the problem is that you don't know which files are concerned...
Now that you have restored your catalog in your new catalog, a theoretical solution would be to get back to the old catalog, and use the organizer to delete all the files in the catalog. The remaining ones would be the duplicates. Creating a new empy catalog and importing the remaining files would recover all duplicates. You could then restore on the new PC.
    There are still two problems:
    - You can't delete a big number of files at the same time? You'd have to delete by small batches
    - You'll have all your duplicates in your new PC, but you still won't be able to include them in the main catalog even you have now a special catalog with only the duplicates.
So, the final question may be : why do you want to keep duplicates? You can examine the duplicates catalog and see if they are really necessary. Maybe you can live with two different catalogs.
