Backup and then reformat and upgrade OS -- will I lose my Applications?

So I am currently running Tiger. My system has been slowing down recently, so I wanted to backup all my data to an external harddrive and reformat my MBP. I also thought I might as well take this opportunity to upgrade my OS to Snow Leopard.
Question: If I backup my computer to an external and reformat and upgrade to Snow Leopard, will I still be able to restore things from my Tiger backup? How would I do this?
SPECIFICALLY: what about my Microsoft Office. How can I get that from the backup (which was a Tiger OS) to the new system that has Snow Leopard installed on it? Is it something as simple as copying the folder over? The issue is that I can't find my original Office installation discs.
Is there software out there that will help me do the backup and make the restore a bit easier? I was thinking of just copying my entire drive to the external, but if there is an easier way I would prefer that.
Thanks SO Much for whatever help anyone can offer!

Hi Lawrence Lee, and a warm welcome to the forums!
The secret is to make a Bootable Clone first off...
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
SuperDuper...
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Have a look at Synchronize! Pro X 6.0.5
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6897/synchronize!-pro-x
Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...
http://www.tri-edre.com/english/tribackup.html
Make sure you can boot from the Clone and that all is well.
Then if you Erase your internal drive & install SL, on first boot it will invoke Migration Assistant and allow you to import/transer all your Apps, Users, Settings, etc.
Best case scenario everything works, worst case scenario you have everything as it was before and you can boot from the External.

Your library should be fine, but you ought to backup routinely anyway.

No, your library will remain - but you should be keeping and maintaining a backup of your downloads/library.

I've never have this problem before, but if you are really worried you can go to finder -> Movies -> iMovie Project.
And then you can copy that project and put it in your desktop first. If you really did lost your project, you can still put it back. It will play perfectly if your events aren't damaged

  • Mail on my iPad 2 is no longer working after latest update. If I delete the account and reinstate it will I lose everything that was there before?

Mail on my iPad 2 has stopped working since the latest update. The symbol is on the screen in its' usual place but it either opens briefly, just showing the blank framework for Mail before suddenly quitting, or all the App symbols disappear completelly from the screen. I'm not confident that i know what to do! If I delete the account and reinstate it will I lose everything that was there before? Looking at an earlier question along the same lines it doesn't appear that that would make a difference. If I reset the whole thing will I lose all my documents, photos etc.?
i'd be extremely grateful for some clear guidance!

    (A) Try reset iPad
Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down together until you see the Apple Logo.
Note: Data will not be affected.
    (B) Close all apps in the multi-task window
    1.Double-click the Home button.
    2. Swipe the app's preview up to close it.
    3. Preview will fly off the screen.

  • If i uninstall and reinstall skype will i lose voi...

    Hi,
If i uninstall and reinstall skype will i lose voicemail messages?
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi, Benluke!
Most uninstallation procedures tend to avoid deleting UGCs (User Generated Content.) That's not to say that I can guarantee they'll stick either.
Have you listened to any of these voicemail messages yet?
If so, it has been transferred to the PC you listened to it on and is located at:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Skype\SkypeUsername\voicemail
No other computer with Skype installed will be able to retrieve it.
If not, it is still on Skype's servers and will remain there for no longer than 60 days from the time and date it has been sent to you.
That being said about Voicemail, you may notice that these are saved in .DAT files. I really don't want to leave you in the dust, but, so far, every resource I've exhausted has literally left me in the dust. You won't be able to play these files outside of Skype and I can't guarantee you that these files will be read by Skype the same way after an uninstall, reinstall and replacement of these files.
You can use some third-party tools to record your voicemails, such as call recorders developed for Skype. Perhaps you can back the voicemails up with one. I do apologise that I can't give you the most direct solution.
Should you choose to uninstall Skype, please keep me posted and let me know how the voicemail messages turn out (and what solution you chose to take.) You'll greatly help those who have wondered about this, present and past! As always, don't hesitate to ask if you've got more questions!

  • If i change my phone version to ios7 will i lose my Application and Moveis or Not?

    Hello
If i change my phone version to ios7 will i lose my Application and Moveis or Not???

restoring the the device to factory settings will completely remove everything, including photos, emails, email settings and EVERYTHING else.
if you are able to login at appleid.apple.com, you can just change your email for your apple ID
if you can't log in at appleid.apple.com, contact AppleCare, they might be able to send you an email to reset your password, depending on a few factors.
    Good luck anyways

  • I just upgraded my OS X 10.6.4 to Mavericks and now my iPhoto '09 needs an upgrade.  Will I lose all my photos if I do the upgrade?

I upgraded my two Macbook Pro's yesterday to Mavericks, from OS X 10.6.4.  I can't seem to open iPhoto on ONE of them.   I believe it's the same on both computers, iPhoto '09.  So I went in the App store and clicked upgrade my iPhoto. Now it says the library needs to be upgraded to work with this newer version of iPhoto.  Help!  Am I going to lose all my photos?

I believe it's the same on both computers, iPhoto '09.
Check the iPhoto versions. The version number should be shown below in the "General" section of the Info panel, when you select iPhoto in the Finder and use "File > Get Info".  With Mavericks you should be using iPhoto 9.5.1.  You can buy the upgrade from the App Store.
Will I lose all my photos if I do the upgrade?
No, but never do an upgrade without making a backup of your computer, just in case something is wrong.
Your photos are in your iPhoto library. After installing the upgraded version,  the iPhoto Library will be upgraded to a new format, when you open it the first time in iPhoto.
If you want to use your iPhoto Library on both your computers, the iPhoto version should be the same.

  • Can I upgrade from Firefox 3 (updated newest version) to Firefox 4 and keep my bookmarks and settings or will I lose them if I upgrade ?

I want to upgrade to the new Firefox 4 from my Firefox 3. But I don't want to lose my settings, tags and bookmarks that I have now. So my question is: Can I upgrade without losing these ?
    Please Help !

Firefox 4 will by default use the same profile folder (location where bookmarks, passwords etc are stored) as previously installed versions. You will not lose your user data by upgrading.

  • If I uninstall iTunes and reinstall it, will I lose my music files?

    Hi
My Ipod touch (2nd Gen) is not being recognised in itunes. I have gone through the ipod touch assistant, and this has made no difference.
Next try is to uninstall itunes and re-install it. However...will I lose my music library when I do this?
I am also having problems with my external back-up drive which has now stopped me opening it up (I have had it for a year), as it says "I don't have permission to see it's contents" and "files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read-only" - so I am loathe to uninstall itunes if I lose all my music etc....
    Thanks for your help
    Simon

You will not lose any music..
However, you do have a current backup of the iTunes folder and all other important info on your hard drive, correct?

  • If I uninstall iPhoto and reinstall it, will I lose all my pictures?

I bought my macbook (2011 model) used awhile ago. I have uploaded a couple of years worth of photos and never had a problem with iPhoto. Recently, I noticed iPhoto won't open with mac OS X. I tried updating it, but can't because instead of my apple ID, the previous owner's apple ID shows up. I read a few forums and it seems like the best advice is to uninstall, then reinstall iPhoto. If I do that, will I lose all my photos? I would really hate that because I don't have a lot of those photos already backed up because I'm stupid and don't think anything through. Please help me!

No, you won't. Back them up anyway.

  • If I restore to 2.1, will I lose my application data for Rolando

i'm tired of my iPhone's caller ID not working long enough. i always have to reset my network settings to get it to work, and i shouldn't have to. if i restore to 2.1, will i lose my game save data? like if i click set up as new iphone? my second oldest setting is still 2.2, i think, i thought it was 2.1 , but when i restored yesterday, it was still 2.2, and i'm still having the same problem, although, admittedly, i'm not having the same 2.2 problems most people are complaining about.

No, only the data and settings will be erased. Follow this article and don't use the backup afterwards and you should be ok.
