Backup approach prior to system go-live

hi,
my project team will be performing conversion and uploading to production client prior to go-live. in case half way hit by error, and to avoid from redoing the whole conversion again, we will perform client copy at stages.
other than client copy approach, what are the other options we have ?
comment and advice will be highly appreciated.
regards,
kent

hi Juan,
a.) correct me if i'm wrong, full db backup and restore takes longer time as compare to client copy
b.) when restoring from full db backup, we can't select just one particular client to restore.
currently in the PRD system there are 5 productive clients
PRD100
PRD200
PRD300
PRD400
PRD500
PRD100 - 400 already gone live and operating ... PRD500 still in conversion stage ...if we restore from full db backup, other productive clients will be impacted.

kent

  • Is this db backup approach adequate?

A question on a db backup approach to see if it is adequate.
I have a 11g database that has FRA on file system (/data/fra), not on ASM. The file system /data is backed up to tape nightly through the OS backup job. The archivelog destination is the FRA (which is the default when the db uses FRA).
Is it correct to say that since the archived logs are written to the FRA, and the FRA is backed up to tape daily, there is no need to explicitly backup the archivelogs through RMAN?
That is, I just need to create a job to backup the database files and control file to FRA? (And the db backup copies and the archived logs in the FRA are backed up to tape by the OS job).
Just wonder if there are drawbacks of this approach? Would it cause any potential problem with db restore/recovery?
Since the archivedlogs are not explicitly backed up by RMAN here, would the backup retention policy and the archivelog deletion policy set in RMAN be applied to the archivelogs? (If not I would need to have a job to regularly delete old archivelogs).
    Many thanks.

if you do not use RMAN to BACKUP ARCHIVELOG, the RETENTION POLICY is not applied. When you manually purge archivelogs, it would still be good to add CROSSCHECK ARCHIVELOG ALL and DELETE EXPIRED ARCHIVELOG ALL to your RMAN commands.
When you use the OS to backup the FRA, it might backup the last [few] archivelog[s] as incomplete files if ARCH is writing to the FRA when it is backed up. On RECOVERy, these ArchiveLogs would appear as corrupt.
In the old days, when using OS scripts to backup archivelogs, I would add "intelligence" into the scripts to ensure that the last archivelog or archivelog still being actively written is not backed up.
RMAN makes backups of only completed archivelogs.

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • SAP Backups ; R/3 & file system

    Hello,
What is the different between SAP R/3 backup and SAP File System backup?
what are the files that backing up in each cases
To which back up does the oracle DB fit in. (Data Files,Control files, Redo Logs, SPFILE)
To which back up does the O/S files fit in. (here Suse O/S)
    thankx

There is not any concept of SAP file system backup.....it means OS level file system backup.
SAP R/3 backup can backed up all the sapdata(database) files, controlfiles as well as redologs.
OS filesystem level backup can backed up all the files based on your requirement and rotation.
Both backups you can use for restorations.....SAP R/3 backup will take all the responsibilities in backup as well as in restoration.
but in OS level backup first you must know which files need to be backed up and what exactly the all directoruies contains.

  • Backup of application file system is also required ?

    Hi,
    Basic question.
Suppose database is creashed and we have restored it with cold backup taken 2 days back.
How do Oracle Application file system will be in sync with database?
We need to backup the application file system also ?
    Thanks,
    Kishore

    Hi,
It's also worth mentioning that your concurrent logs in the application file system will be out of sync with the records in the database.
If you restore the database from a backup taken a couple of days ago then the records in FND_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS will be a couple of days old, but the users will have been running requests since the backup was made and creating files in $APPLCSF/log/<context>. The danger is that when you restart the environment the users start to run concurrent requests and the output of the request will be appended to the end of the existing logfile.
So best to find the maximum request number in the table and remove any output files newer than that to avoid confusion.

When doing catalog backup get message " your system is low on disk space, and elements organizer cannot perform the operation.  If create a catalog with 20 pictures backup works OK.  backing up to a 1TB external drive.  Have 16705 pictures in catalog.  Total disk space for pictures is 192 MB.  Why am I getting message?

Total disk space for pictures is 192 MB.
Do you really mean MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) ?
Even if its GB, the free space may be enough, depending on your files size, especially with videos or raw files.
When you start the backup process, it first shows you the total size of the catalog.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.
Is there antivirus software running in the background
Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
    A locally mounted volume
    Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.

Paste the contents of the latest .afd file generated which you can find in /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup.
Also check the permission of the folder where you are taking the backup, it should have full permission to the user ora<SID>.

  • Backup everything except the system tablespace

Is there a way to backup everything except the system tablespace without having to specify every individual tablespace?
version is 10.1.0.5 on HP-UX itanium.
The reason for this is the database was upgraded from 7.3.4->8i->10.1.0.5 and we are now migrating to using RMAN instead of user managed backups however we have encountered a bug when backing up index blocks in the system tablesapce this only impacts compressed backupsets so If I can exlude the system tablespace I can run two backups one uncompressed that captures the system tablespace then another that captures everything else. I'd really like to avoid specifying the tablespaces in a script as it then introduces the possibility that a new tablespace is added and isn't included in the backups.

Unfortunatly this database is used by a third party application and the aplpication vendor only supports 10.1.0.5 at the moment, plans are to upgrade next year and tidy up the number of tablespaces at the same time.
looks like I'll have to backup the system tablespace uncompressed and then all the other tablespaces as a compressed backupset and setup an alert on files not backed up.

Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but if you've reached the 5 computer limit then you can log into your account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can do once every 12 months) and you can then authorise/reauthorise the computers that you still have and need : authorising and deauthorising.

The Adobe Community Publishing System is live. You can use this new system to write and post articles directly on the Adobe website.
I think that this system may be an especially good fit for people like Rick Gerard, David Wigforss, Mylenium, and the other folks around here who tend to write lengthy responses to forum questions.

I'm most familiar with the Apple implementation of jive.
There are a series of login bugs / features.
You should login before surfing the forums.  This avoids a bug were the software doesn't notice that you have logged in.
If your login status get confused. you need to clear your web browser caches.
You should pick a forum base like the list of your posts and consider this  your home base.  You should put this in a separate window.  You should find an auto reload add-on to your browser that reloads the page every 15 to 20 minutes.  Thus, you avoid the forced logout problem.
It's probably best to use the Chrome or firefox web browser.  Chrome seems to work the best on the most platforms  ( works on the ipad whereas Safari has problems ).
