Backup, Archive or Export? iPhoto question

I don't have that much space on my hard disk and want to keep my photos on DVDs. I've read here that DVD+R is better than -R but what's the best way of storing them? Should I backup, archive or export?
I am printing contact sheets for each DVD so that once I have them backed up, I will want to remove them from iPhoto and only re-import them when I want to use them.
I've noticed that if I try and export it will only let me export a maximum of 60 photos, so presumably that's not the way to go? And the Share/Burn only lets me view them in iPhoto and not on any other platform (what happens if Apple replaces iPhoto in years to come??)
Any suggestions gladly welcomed. Thanks.

For data disk, it's a tossup between +R and -R as far as I know. If you're burning an video DVD via iDVD then you definitely want -R disks.
What size are your image files? 60 files on a 4.5 GB drive is about 73 MB each. Are your files that big? Do you want the file to be easily used by iPhoto at a later date and keep their titles, keywords and comments intact? If so, the use the Share->Burn menu item and burn either Events or Albums of photos. Then delete those photos from the library when done. The disk will be readable by iPhoto like this and you can copy photos back into the library if needed for printing or some other project.
If you just want to store the basic image files, then export the photos to a folder on the desktop using the File->Export->File Export and select the option to include the Title and keywords. They will be written to the new files and readable by iPhoto if imported back into the library at a later date.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

RE: CS4 Premiere Pro -> what is best to backup/archive video to minimize size?
I use export>media to adobe media encoder. I am using the avi. the avi file generated seems large. i.e. for 27 minutes the file is 6 gb.
what is the best format to use to minimize file size?????
any help will be appreciated and thks in advance.

    >what is best to backup/archive video to minimize size?
That's the wrong question to ask. Ideally you don't change anything about the original media for backup. It's size it it's size, and you get enough of whatever you nee to accommodate that.

  • Archive photos in iPhoto

Easiest way to Archive photos in iPhoto. With tads included.
One idea is to export the photos as the smallest version possible, and save the full size ones on DVD

    Brian:
It's like the old saying, penny wise, pound foolish. When you replace the full sized files is a reduced file size version, and pixel size if that's what you intend, all you're doing is limiting your options to use those photos.
As Terence suggested an external FW hard drive can server two important functions: 1 - house your full sized library (and iTunes library if desired); 2 - serve as a backup for other important files. The cost of external FW hard drives are at a point that they are very cost effective insurance against loss of important files. With your library(s) off the boot drive, the system and applications will function more effectively since they will have plenty of space for virtual memory, cache and swap files.
If you're going to replace your original files with reduced size (and quality) do as Terence suggested and use the Share->Burn menu option. That will produce a disk that iPhoto can mount and view and keep your keywords, titles and comments intact. If you need a photo back as a full sized file for printing then you cancopy photos, rolls or albums back to the working library as needed. (Note: although the screenshot is for V7 it will be the same for V6.)

  • Feature request: Importing/backup/archive of tracks with metadata

    Hi everyone,
I've found that one of the things iTunes does better than any other music player is handling and organising song information. Have you ever seen a PC user's jukebox? Thos things are a real mess, with cryptic track names ("mike mills - air - talkie walkie - 05"), artists in the album column, etc...
All of this information which describes the file itself is called "meta-data", and iTunes handles meta-data in two seperate places: the song file itself (ID3 tags in MP3s, for instance) and the iTunes library file.
You'll notice that when you drag a music file from one iTunes library to another, the meta-data stored in the file itself is preserved (artist, title, track number, etc...), while the meta-data stored in the iTunes library isn't (your rating, the play count, the last date played, etc...).
What I'm suggesting here is a feature that allows one to:
    (a) make a folder / burn a disk with the song files AND a special iTunes meta-data (XML?) file, so that all meta-data is preserved,
    (b) optionally delete the music files from your library after backup (i.e. archiving), and naturally,
    (c) open and read backup/archive folders and disks, and allow one to reintegrate songs, playlists or the entire collection back into one's main music library.
I hope Apple is listening, because I think this feature would be really easy to implement, and would make a lot of people (especially those who keep their music spread across 2 or more computers) very happy!
I've already set up a smart playlist ("Give me 4.5 GiB of disabled (unchecked) tracks from my library, sorted by least recently added") that gives me the candidates for archival. Now, all I'm hoping for is a button that allows me to archive (move) everything to a DVD, clear some space on my PowerBook hard drive and rest assured that if I ever want to go back and retrieve a track, it'll be waiting, with the playcounts, song information and ratings all intact!
...either that or make all hard drives at least 1000 times bigger. I'm not picky.
    Cheers,
    - tonyboy
    PowerBook G4

    Thank you for an idea!
I wrote a simple script to get metadata from files and offset AE clip times respectively. It is quite dirtycoded but does the job for me. Maybe someone will want to use this script, so I put it on a public accessible URL: http://zig-zag.ru/usefulshit/ae/xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    My workflow is as follows:
    - I separate camera footages (.mov, .jpg, etc...), and put them to folders like camera_01, camera_02 etc
    - create new project in AE, new composition - named "camera_01_p1", import files from camera_01 folder to a project panel, drag'n'drop them to a compo, select "camera_01_p1" compo and run xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    - I have 8 hours of footage, so I duplicate "camera_01_p1" composition, name it "camera_01_p2", delete all layers but unshifted ones, rerun time shifter script, repeat with the rest
    - do the same with camera_02 (don't forget to adjust still photo layer duration before time shifting)
    - export to a premiere project (yeah, thank you for this one!)
    - then I open project in premiere, copy everything to a same sequence (different layers where needed)
    - last thing is to sync entire video and photo layers at some known moment - it is done easily by placing marker at some time feature on different video/audio clips, and manually shifting entire layer to sync
    - profit!
Since we are allready offtopic to premiere, I place some of my notes here:
    - XMPFile function does not read files like "/d/path" on my windows 7, so I replaced them with "d:/"
    - don't understand why, but this check - if(fname != null){ is not working. So script will fail on compositions with solid, null, etc. layers.
    - I wrote simple date parser that is currently working with Nikon D3 (.jpg) and Canon 5D mk2 (.mov) but it can fail on some other models/formats.

  • Steps to export iPhotos to external HD

steps to export iPhotos to external HD, please ?   thanx

    Very vague question...
There's no such thing as "iPhotos". There's an iPhoto app, there's an iPhoto Library, the Library contains photos.
You can move the Library to an external drive.
You can export individual photos from the Library to an external.
But what you want to do is not clear.
    To move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    To export the Photos:

  • How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?

How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?  I tried to Export the Albums but just transferred the files individually.

If you want to maintain the iPhoto organisation then back up the iPhoto Library.
If you want to export to the Finder, well you need to create a folder for the contents of an Album and expot to that.
If you have an older version of iPhoto: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. This feature is built in to iPhoto 11.

  • Basic iPhoto questions:

I have some Basic iPhoto questions before I start using the program:
    - does iPhoto apply any compression or change images in any way when they
    are imported?
    - after images are imported, can the original source folder of images be deleted off of the mac?
    - can Quicktime files exported from iPhoto be viewed on a Windows computer?
    - can iPhoto handle large resolution images that might be as large as 8-15mb each? does it display them quick? are there any known file size issues?
    Thanks!!!!

    kat.
Is there a way to use iPhoto on a network so other users can read and possibly write to an iPhoto library on a networked mac?
iPhoto is a consumer level photo organiser, not a server. It's possible to share photos but libraries are very difficult and fraught with the danger of database corruption. Some have reported success.
Is it possible to password protect or secure certain images in the library so they can not be seen by anyone?
No. The best I can suggest there is to create a second library and store it in a secure area like a protected dmg. But remember, you can only have one library open at a time.
After photos are deleted from iPhoto, are there any remaining traces or cached files anywhere other than the trash
If you delete photos from iPhoto and empty the iPhoto trash then the pics are removed from the Finder as well. They remain as findable as any other deleted file from that point, which is, very, if the searcher in knowledgeable.

  • Recovery using Full BCV backup & archive logs

    Hello DBA's ,
I have Last Sunday's Full BCV (Buisness Copy Volume) backup (i.e. ..... the tablespaces were taken into Backup mode then Sync the BCV, then split the BCV , take the backup of BCV and take the tabespaces in normal mode in short what we call as HOT BACKUP ........ ) & also I am taking only archive log & control file backup Daily.
Now I want to Run my database on Different Server using the above FULL BCV & daily backed up Archive logs & Control file.
Kindly update me- Can I go for following recovery steps for above scenario.
    1) Install ORACLE software on new server.
    2) Restore the last Sunday's FULL BCV (Hot backup)
    3) Restore the archive log from last Sunday's Full BCV backup.
    4) Restore the latest backed up control file.
    5) Mount the database.
    6) Recover the database using backed up control file & archive logs.
    7) Open the database with RESETLOGS option.
Please Guide me whether I can Fully Recover/Start database on this new server using above steps. ---OR---- " Are there any more files except data files that need to be backed up daily after Full BCV ? " ---OR ---- More suggestions are Welcome.
I want to test this scenario bcz.
    a) I can't afford daily BCV due to lack of storage with current retention given by buisness.
    b) I can't afford long time taken by RMAN for backup & recovery, as it disturbs my other backup shedules, also RTO should be very low as per my buisness requirement.

  • Exporting iPhoto Library files to external HD

I'm running out of HD space on my MBPro. Exported large number of files from Library, which includes a lot of Nikon NEF files (RAW); however, my MBPro 150 GB HD, shows little change. I looked in Pictures/iPhoto Library, right-clicking on iPhoto Library to expose contents, and see the NEF files are still there.
What is best way of transferring all files out of iPhoto Library to an external drive?
    Thanks

If you want a way to maintain the keywords, titles and comments on those photos and be abel to get them back into iPhoto easily put the photos you want to move into an album or a single event, select the album or event and use the Share->Burn menu option.
This will create a mini library on disk that can be mounted in iPhoto to view the photos and, if needed, copy them back into the library.
Or you can create a second library on the external HT and copy the photos (either in an album or event) to it from the working library with iPhoto Library Manager (which will maintain the keywords, titles, comments, etc.) and then delete the photos from the working library.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Sharing Exported Iphoto Slideshow via QT Pro

I'll make this question pretty simple, I'm trying to "share" an exported Iphoto slideshow to my .mac site and send via email, I know it compress's the file when "sharing", but for some reason when I try to share in QT 7 Pro, the "share" menu option is grayed out and this only happens for exported Iphoto slideshows, If I recall you could share slideshow's in QT 6 Pro, why not in QT 7 Pro?

    Hi Neal,
I just exported a small slideshow to quicktime. I see what you mean now, share is grayed out.
I have no problem sharing video clips from my digital camera.
Hmmmmm, there has got to be a reason for this.
I would share/export the slideshow and use the smallest size. This is the correct size for emailing and putting in your Movies folder on your iDisk.

You do need to be more specific in your questions (like what do you mean by iPhoto junk?) and not rant.
Just have your iPhoto 08 application open your iPhoto 06 library and it will be converted to 08. Nothing to export.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
