Backup, backup, backup

As the regulars in this discussion knows, I often tell people to backup their data. Well, now this has paid off for me. Our iBook was stolen from our home a few days ago. Fortunately, our backup was just 5 days older and most of the changes made between the backup and the theft was saved to a Firewire drive that was not stolen.
So please:
Backup your files on a regular basis.
Store at least one VERIFIED backup off site.
You never know what's going to happen:
Fire, theft, flooding, hurricanes, hardware error and/or software bugs. Or just a simple user mistake...
So, how do I backup?
A) The free (but cumbersome) method: Burn your files to DVDs using Toast or even Apple's Disk Utility.
B) If you have .Mac use Apple's Backup application.
C) The best method I know is Retrospect from http://www.dantz.com/
Retrospect can restore a working System to an otherwise completely empty hard drive. (Well, you need a bootable disk with Retrospect installed. If not, you need to install OS X and Retrospect first and then do the restore.)
Once Retrospect has a full backup, it backs up only the changes you make, making subsequent backups fast. It even keeps track of files you delete, so they won't reappear after a restore.
I use four separate sets of DVDs on a rotating basis, assuring that a failure in restoring one disc won't be a complete disaster. (Since I always let Retrospect verify the discs, this has never happened to me.)
Note that I have no affiliation with Dantz, other than being a happy customer.

And now he's saying it's 4.19, Sunday August 17. I kid you not.

  • Windows Backup - The backup application coud not start due to an internal error: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform this task. (0x8100000010).

Windows 7 users in my domain are unable to configure or change backup settings.  Users are able to open Control Panel > Backup and Restore, but when they click
Change settings, they receive the error: Windows Backup - The backup application coud not start due to an internal error: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform this task. (0x8100000010).
The same error is received when executing sdclt.exe /configure at the command prompt, regardless of whether the command prompt is launched using "run as administrator".
I've done significant testing, and have been able to determine that the local administrator account is able to configure backups before the computer is joined to the domain.  Once the computer is joined to the domain, the local administrator account
and domain users who are in the local administrators group are no longer able to configure backup and restore.  Domain administrators are able to configure backups.
This is a new issue, which began occuring sometime in the last 2 months.  3 months ago, users were able to configure backups without issue, and those computers with backups configured are still able to run their backups and do restores; however the
settings can no longer be changed.
Clearly something in the domain is doing this, but Group Policy has not been altered, and I can find no setting that would be doing this in any case.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
So you mean you have tried different accounts in the local Administrator group and all of them failed?
If so, please check what group the local Administrator group belongs to? Does it belong to a group with limited privileges, such as the Guests group?

  • Lost Windows Server Backup, historical backups. Backup seems to have restarted from a fresh full backup. How can I get to those old backups?

    Scenario with very bad outlook:
Friday-16th, early AM.  Win2008 SBS Server crashes due to RAID5 issues, bad disk.  Found that server was NOT configured with hot spare and for some reason the controller had marked a 2nd disk bad..which turned out not to be the case.
Had a single external USB backup drive being fed by Windows Server Backup.  Obtained support from vendor and was able to regain the RAID and start the server.
Soon became apparent that Exchange was having serious issues - edb was corrupt and not mountable.  Restore edb from backup, repaired and was eventually able to mount.  Then found it had Hub Transport issues.  Researching that when it was noticed
NTFS events being logged at a high rate.  Restarted system to repair the filesystem, which was successful.
After the FS repair, found the Exchange edb, new edb I had created to migrate mailboxes to, and public edb all 0k in size.
Restored the edb again and commenced repair, which eventually read Clean Shutdown again...but could not get it to mount.  Exchange was having various issues seemingly with AD.
Changed backup time to avoid a backup that day, as did not want to back up while RAID was rebuilding - had inserted a replacement for the failed drive.
Monday/19th, was advised that much of the data was corrupt.  This is an accounting firm and relies heavily on their data, especially since the last time their ext USB was rotated was Nov6 2013.  They now have no year end backup, nor a backup from
    post tax season 2014.
Is it possible to recover any of the historical backups prior to the full backup/restart?
Oh, and all Shadow Copies for the impacted volume/drive are gone.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Please use the “Wbadmin get versions” command to check the backup versions on the server. If there is only latest shadow copy, you may not recover any of the historical backups prior to the full backup.

  • How do I restore phone contacts from Backup Assistant backups?

Something caused my contacts to revert to an older version.  I not able to find how to restore them from an earlier Backup Assistant backup.

I'm super sorry to hear about your contacts, dave658! I'm commited to doing all I can to ensure that you're able to restore your contacts. The best option would be to view your contacts online at vzw.com and follow the instructions below:
    1. Sign in to My Verizon.
    2. Locate the I Want To... section.
    3. Click More Actions.
    4. In the MESSAGING column, select Manage My Contacts. The Backup Assistant Plus: Contacts page displays.
    5. Click Sync to Phone. A confirmation message displays.
    6. Click OK.
Let me know if this helps. Have a great day! ^CM

  • When i want to update my ipad and i want to make backup does backup including apps

when i want to update my ipad and i want to make backup does backup including app

If you backup with iCloud only - yes your apps are included in the backup. If you backup and sync with iTunes - only your app data and documents, device settings and things like that are included in the backup.
So if you use iTunes only, you have to restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes. If you are going to update to iOS 5 now you should backup your iPad ... Or even iOS 6 when available on the 19th -  backup your iPad.

PERFORMING A TEST BACKUP (VALIDATE BACKUP) USING RMAN
    =====================================================
    PURPOSE
RMAN을 이용하여 Test Backup을 수행하기 위한 정보를 제공한다.
    EXPLANATION
8.1.7 부터 RMAN에서 BACKUP command에 VALIDATE keyword를 사용할 수 있게 되었다
이 명령의 수행은 다음과 같은 작업을 수행한다.
    - Datafile의 physical and logical corruption을 check한다.
    RESTORE VALIDATE와 거의 비슷하다.
    EXAMPLE
아래와 같은 command들을 수행하여 backup하고자 하는 database file과 archived redo
log들이 실제로 backup될 수 있는지를 검증할 수 있다.
    RUN {
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch1 TYPE 'sbt_tape';
    BACKUP VALIDATE
    DATABASE
    ARCHIVELOG ALL;
Note: MAXCORRUPT or PROXY parameter는 VALIDATE option과 함께 사용할 수 없다.

  • ISDN configuration for backup of backup

    Hello Guys..

  • Recover a specific backup from backup history with dbmcli

    hello friends,
how can i recover a specific backup from backup history with dbmcli with inizialization. in dbmcli i can only find methods for medium recovery. with dbmgui i try "instance" in menu, then "Recovery with Initialization", then i try i choose  admin_state, then i choose the radiobutton recover from backup history. I get my choice with specific date.
How can I build a script in dbmcli for this scenario. when i am try the command backup_history_open and backup_history_list i cant see the specific backup, what i see in dbmgui.
the backup history item, that i need has a specific system key "492FB68F0002". with which dbmcli  command i get this system key for recover.
which command i take for this scenarion db_activate RECOVER?
    many thanks for suggestions,
    christoph

    > how can i record the staments for my script?
Do you know the "show console" feature in DBMGUI/DB Studio?
With that you can display all commands used by DBMGUI and the Recovery Wizard.
    > I am looking for an automatism to recover an instance from a specific item from backup history, because we test ower deliverys with import in stms - see return codes.
Ok, but why do you need a recovery for that?
Use SNAPSHOTS instead (read the docu [here|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/44/c4afa67ca22e17e10000000a114a6b/content.htm]!).
    Create your base instance.
    Create a SNAPSHOT.
    Now run your tests.
When you finished your tests, simply restore the SNAPSHOT.
    This takes seconds.
Bring the database online again and run some new tests.
When you want your initial instance again - just restore the SNAPSHOT once again.
Really, SNAPSHOTs are made for such a scenario.
    > content for script:
    >
    > 1. stopsap r3 in sidadm context
    > 2. db_admin of instance in dbmcli context
    > 3. recover a specific item from backup history from nfs mount in dbmcli context
    > 4. restartable check in dbcmcli context
    > 5. restart instance in dbmcli context
    > 6. logmode to overwrite in dbmcli context
    > 7. db_offline in dbmcli context
    > 8. startsap all in sidadm context
Ok. if you still would like to do it  this way... how about this:
    dbmcli -U c -i refresh_db.txt
    refresh_db.txt:
    ==============
    db_admin
    db_activate RECOVER <medium_name> DATA AUTOIGNORE
    db_online
db_execute SET LOG AUTO OVERWRITE ON
    db_offline
I leave the stopsap/startsap and the rest of the script to you, but I guess you got the idea.
BTW: there's no need to check for restart ability of the database after the recovery since by definition all full data restores are restartable with MaxDB!
So have fun (and go for the SNAPSHOTS instead!).
    regards,
    Lars

Excellent apple networking on Lion or ML is usually the issue.
Reboot the TC.. if that don't fix it.. reboot the whole network.. modem.. router.. TC.. clients.. restart in that order.
There are tools.. download the real tool if you have lion..
For ML you are stuck with toyland.. AU 6.1 .. good luck with the plastic hammer.

  • ACS Scheduled Backups + Secondary backup

    Hi,
I've got a pair of ACS 5.3's - primary and secondary and am trying to configure scheduled backups to an SFTP server.
I've configured scheduled backups to backup ACS every night at 00:00
    System Administration >  ... >  Operations >  Scheduled BackupsSystem Administration >  ... >  Operations >  Scheduled Backups
    System Administration >  ... >  Operations >  Scheduled Backups
...which is working fine - although for some reason - the backup size was around 25MB when I was running 5.2 - but is now only 2.5MB since I upgraded to ACS 5.3...?
    My question is:
    - What does the scheduled backup include? Does it contain the ACS configuration (network device and user database, and policy etc) AND the ADE device config (the 'sh run' when you ssh to the ACS/ADE platform) - or is it just the ACS config? ie. is it the equivalent of the CLI command 'backup backupname repository myrepository' (ACS+ADE) or 'acs backup backupname repository myrepository' (just ACS)?
Also - with the scheduled backup - it only seems to create a backup from the primary ACS - but never creates a backup from the secondary ACS If the scheduled backup contains both the ACS databse and the ADE config - then that covers the whole primary ACS - but that means that the secondary's ADE config is never backed up? If you do a manual CLI backup from the secondary - you get a backup file created and transferred - although it's only small as it only contains the ADE config - but I'm confused why this isn't done as part of the scheduled backup?
    Thanks,
    Rob...

TAC have just answered this question for me:
The Scheduled Backups feature backs up ACS configuration data only (all the GUI config, NDs,policies, user credentials etc).
It’s NOT equivalent to the CLI command 'backup backupname repository ’
It’s actually equivalent to the CLI command “'acs backup backupname repository” (This is ACS config data only).
The scheduled backup on the Primary will create an ACS configuration backup only. And since the Primary ACS and Secondary ACS should be in sync and the Primary controls any change in the database that’s fine (because it’s only config, no logs and no ADE OS data)
So you need to backup your ADE config separately - either a one off manual backup from the GUI (System Administration >  ... >  Operations >  Distributed System Management) - from the primary - and select 'ADE-OS and ACS Configuration Backup ' - AND then do the same for the secondary (still via the primary GUI). Or do a 'backup backupname repository ' from both primary and secondaries.
Or - backup the 'sh run' type config from both primary and secondary.
Hope that helps anyone else looking for the same answers. The documentation isn't that clear for this in ACS.

  • Backup the backup

I'm not sure if this is the correct group, but apologize in advance.
I have a 2TB external firewire disk unit for timemachine. It works great.
But if this disk unit wil stop working for some reason I have no backup anymore.
So I was thinking of creating a backup on a second location once every week. But just copying a near 1TB of files every week is not a very smart solution in my opinion.
There must be some easy way to make a backup every week with only the files that are added or changed.
I can't find such an option in time machine. Does it exist?
If not, what options are there for making smart backups on a second remote location.
    Thanks
    Andre

Most descent backup programs (and this includes CCC and Super Duper) have "smart backup" options, i.e., once the original stuff is on the backup, future backups will only update what has been changed and thus are relatively fast.

  • How to backup a backup disk?

My old backup disk has started to become a bit unstable and I have bought a new disk in order to replace it.
1.) Can I just drag and drop the old backup folder "Backups.backupdb" to my new drive or do I need a more advanced tool like a "clone tool" in order to do a complete backup of the backup folder?
2.) Is it safe / ok to have one old "Backups.backupdb" folder and one current (new) "Backups.backupdb" folder on the same backup disk?
