Backup battery - what wattage?

I have a G4 450 Dual model7892.
I want to buy a backup plug in power source from APC.
They said the minimum needed for this computer is a backup battery of 540 watts. I cannot get them to tell me how they came upon this number.
Can anyone help or make recommendations for backup equipment?
Thanks,
Mrs H

There may be a power tag on the back of your Mac that lists the Volts & Amps.
In picking the size and features of a UPS, there are several important considerations.
1. What devices are connected to the backup power & what are their wattages. I use a Belkin model F6B750-AVR uninterruptable power supply (UPS) that's rated at 400 watts. I have my G4 AGP Mac, a 17" LCD monitor, my DSL modem & wireless router connected (everything needed to continue operation during a power failure). During use, the UPS is only loaded at 25% of it's output capacity.
2. How long do you want the system to operate after a power failure. I have the Belkin software shutdown the system after 10 minutes of operation (like if I'm not home), unless I shut it down manually. If I recall correctly, I calculated that I could run on battery power for possibly as long as 25-30 minutes.
3. Surge protection - In addition to the battery backup electrical outlets (4 each), the Belkin UPS has 2 additional outlets that are surge protected. I use these for my other devices, like a printer, etc. The surge protection keeps high voltage spikes from damaging your equipment.
4. Automatic Voltage Regulation - The Belkin UPS regulates the output voltage at 120VAC, regardless of a low line voltage like durning a brownout.
5. Broadband/Phone Line Surge Protection - The Belkin UPS has a plug for a standard telephone line connection (like for dial-up), an ethernet plug for DSL line connection & a coax connector for cable connection. All of these are surge protected.
Your G4 450 Dual could probably use a UPS with the 400W rating, except it would have a shorter battery run time. There's not a whole lot of difference in price when you get a higher rated UPS, so get one larger that 400W. I would recommend that has the features on the Belkin UPS.
Hope this info helps in your purchase decision. A UPS protects your computer hardware like a backup hard drive protects your software. You need both.
 Cheers, Tom

  • What are the best external backup battery choices for the iPod Touch 4G?

    Hello,
I am so disappointed with the battery life on my iPod Touch 4G, even when I turn off location services and notifications and put it in airplane mode.
As such, I realize that I am going to have to get an external backup battery, even though I don't like the idea of carrying around yet another item.
What are the best choices out there, especially any ultra-portable (aka small and non-bulky) ones?  I came across this Juice Pack Air - iPod Touch 4G Case, which seems like the perfect solution, but it is on back order and seems to have been so for a good amount of time.  Who knows when it will be in stock again.
TIA for any and all help!

  • Replace Backup Battery

My installer put the backup battery in the attic.  I'm disabled so I don't stand a prayer of getting up there to replace the battery.  What do I do when it's time to replace the battery?  How do I know the battery needs changing?  What's the average before a battery needs to be change?

Mine began beeping about a week ago.  I could find nowhere on the general website that addressed this problem--even in the automated help (i always got remote control battery replacement...not helpful).  Nor was i initially able to get real, live tech support.  This morning i got through and was advised consistent with this string: ie verizon warantees the back-up battery for one year only; after that it is your problem.  the website is:
                                                             fios.asurion.com
please note: there is no www. before the address.
there are only three tabs on the website: home; order; log-in.
the battery at this time costs just under $50.00 (not sure what shipping is).
I am pleased with Fios (though the Verizon customer support website could use some help), but charging you 50 bucks to replace the battery is something not even the cable company would do.
note also: the back-up battery powers only your phone service in the event of a power outage (according to tech support; no internet, no tv).  So...i thought (and was advised by tech support) i could just take out the battery to get rid of the beeping...didn't work.
hope this helps you avoid what it took me to figure out.

  • Backup battery replacement specifications

I have scanned MULTIPLE pdf manuals on replacing the FLAT backup battery in the 17" iMac G5 with the ambient light sensor AND NOWHERE DOES IT TELL YOU WHAT KIND, TYPE, SPECS, ETC. It just says replace it with the new one.. well duh!
There was no battery under the little clip for me to compare it to otherwise I wouldn't have a problem. In fact, I don't understand how the machine was working before since it had been working perfectly fine a couple days ago. I cracked open the case to replace/upgrade the hard drive and when I put back together unit will not boot. Cracked open the back and that was when I noticed the little flat battery compartment was empty???????????
I have replaced those little 3.6v purple backup batteries for 20 years. Why didn't they just stick with SAME BATTERY they have used for over 20 years

The battery is a CR2032 3 volt lithium button battery that you can find for about five dollars in any Radio Shack.

  • Ibook g4 133 backup battery???

Hi, I have never had this problem and i always let my computer die on battery power but lately my ibook runs out of juice and when it starts up via powercord it has changed the date..... never did that in the 2 years i have owned this one or the one before it.... i read that they don't have back up batteries but i never experienced this until this week.... what is up? it also wont go intohybrnation when it it runs out of juice and is still on it jst all of a subben dies.... no little white light onin the front......
so is it true that there are no backup batteries...??? and going into hybernation was what saved the timmeand date...
    thanks.....

    Hi Richard,
It's true. There is no backup battery. There's a small capacitor that maintains PRAM for about a minute while batteries are swapped.
Your battery is probably near dead. Lithium ion batteries have a life of two years on average. You can try resetting the PMU but you probably need a new battery.

  • Backup Battery Lesson

OK, not a problem, at least one that I haven't solved, but recently my seven-year-old TiBook started misbehaving on the infrequent reboots for SW updates (about the only time it gets rebooted). Simply, the display would come up in minimum brightness, regardless of where it was set during shutdown.
This, of course, is suggestive of a backup battery problem. Clock held up during restarts, I believe, though quite frankly I didn't peek at the system log to see for sure. In any event, not wanting to change the battery out (a real pain in the behind and not a trivial expense to purchase a new one) I did the backup recharge routine of closing the lid, taking the main battery out and leaving on AC overnight, perhaps 10-12 hours.
Well, as I suspected (hoped?) that did the trick. I did the reboot this morning and it came up with normal brightness level such that I could view the verbose boot from the git-go.
Simply posted as a reminder of what to do first when suspecting backup battery problems.

I've had the same problem with the phone battery alarm/constant beeping that has been going on for over two years now -- EVERY 15 MINUTES. Fortunately it is in my basement so not as noticable, however I cannot get it to turn off for more than a day at a time by unplugging it and replugging it in.
I've been told I need to purchase a new battery - for a sevice I don't have. I am not a residential phone subscriber so there is no need for a battery backup. I confess, I'm stubborn so I REFUSE to buy something I don't need or want. $12 -- $50 -- or $500 dollars -- it is the same to me.
Is there ANYTHING that can be done or do I just need to cancel my service?
It's reached the point that I will use the money Verizon wants me to spend for a useless battery towards a less expensive service provider as I thankfully have multiple otpions in my area for internet and tv?

    Hey people

ok sounds good, but i cant figure out how to properly charge it,
do i need to put the normal battery pack out and then attach it to the AC adapter, or not?
Does the laptop need to be running or will it be charged also turned off?
i would really appreciate if u could help me out and tell me the proper way to recharge!!
    thanks already,
    cheers,

    Hello and welcome,
I didn't know that the backup battery was rechargeable.  I don't think it is.  You might be better off to just replace it.
The  Hardware Maintenance Manual page 80 shows how to access it.  According to the System Service Parts T410, the FRU number is 02K7078.  They should be easy to find and inexpensive.

  • Change backup battery or not?

I am in the process to replace the thermal module of my W510 machine. I have opened the cover and saw the backup battery. I am curious that  is it a good time to change the backup battery? Do I need to change it or not? It is not that easy to open the cover like this. What's your advice?

Depends on the battery type.  There are actually rechargeable types, so these will appear to last the life of the machine, or at least the time the original owner has possession of the unit.
If the battery is not the rechargeable kind, look for 2-3+ years. In any event, it's a good idea to change when the system is open if it is in a normally inaccessible area. as this will avoid any corrosion that may occur as the battery ages.  Otherwise wait until the system looses it's memory <g>.
Interstingly, my Nikon has a CR1616 button battery, and it's been over 4 years now, and still working.

How do I get a new iTunes account to create a backup of what's on my wifes iPhone without deleting all the photos and stuff?

Well, I believe I found it.....
When I connect the IPhone the device name pops up under devices in the selection column. Right click on the device name and select "Back-up".....
If this is incorrect please let others know as I won't be able to because my wife will have destroyed all computers in the house for losing her data.

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Backup Battery

I have an iMac G3 CRT, indigo. It won't hold date & time anymore. The help menu tells me I may need to replace the backup battery but I can't find any info on where it is or how to accesss it. Anybody got info??

    Welcome Dale!
This is the battery as sold online:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
Radio Shack stores cary the correct battery as part number 23-026, but will charge you three times the online price (the example I posted is typical).
If you open the RAM installation door on the bottom of the case, you can see the PRAM battery. A non-metallic grasping tool like plastic forceps makes replacing the battery easier. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and duplicate it when installing the new one.
Most PRAM batteries last a long time, but start to die quickly when the computer is off wall power. Best practice is to leave Macs plugged into the wall socket even if they are not getting much use. If you must unplug one for an extended period of time, remove the battery and tape it to the case.
