Backup between two locations

We have 2 offices. Instead of using cloud space to have an offsite backup, I am thinking of putting a Mac Mini in each office and backing up the other offices files every other night. We both have fiber optic internet service at 10mbps up and down. I was planning to VPN in to each server and then use Super Duper or something else. Time Machine would be great if it will work. I could run Lion server or Snow leopard server.
Does anyone see a problem with this setup? Any bottlenecks? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Rich

I'll chime in here because I do the exact same thing now and it works beautifully.
We have an Xserve at one end and a Mac Mini at the other. Every night the Xserve backs up to external storage attached to the Mini at the remote location. The connection is made through a Point2Point circuit (fiber).
I use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://bombich.com). I HIGHLY recommend this app. You can schedule your backup tasks to run at specific times or at a regular interval, and it sends you email notifications so you don't have to comb log files to make sure your backup ran.
There are no bottlenecks or problems that I've encountered. It backs up your data thru an SSH tunnel. Part of the setup process involves the app generating public and private keys, and then you install the public key on your remote machine to falicitate the SSH connection.
This is pretty much a flawless backup strategy. I've never had a problem with it.

  • Is it possible to set up a backup between two external drives

Is it possible to set up a backup between two external drives?
i use time machine to back up my imac onto an external 2T.
i also have two external 3T drives.  i am looking for redundancy of data, tried software RAID and it failed.  i also see some limitations with RAID that a backup would avoid.
    thanks for sharing your expertise.
    be well,
    tony

so thanks to all of you, particularly rkaufmann87 i have decided to stop the plan of setting up a software RAID set.  instead i have downloaded ccc and am in the process of setting up the secone 3t external drive as a clone.  i will use time machine to back up the internal hard drive only and if possible see if i can clone that as well onto one of the 3t's.
this gives me the peace of mind i sounght and avoids the problem of total corruption that exists with the raid solution i was exploring.
thank you all for making this an enjoyable and informative experience.  what a powerful community.

  • HT1379 The USB ports on my 30" Cinema are not working.  The monitor has not been used for a year or so, and the computer is a Mac Book Pro, 1012 model running OS Mavericks.  I need to move the computer between two locations, and the other monitor is a 27"

The USB ports on my 30" Cinema HD display appear to not work.  The monitor has not been used for almost a year, when I upgraded to a new Mac Book Pro and the 27" retina display.  Now I need to move the computer back and forth between two locations using the two displays.  The need for operating USB ports is essential.  Any ideas.  The display appears entirely normal.  Am running OS X 10.9.

    Disregard, problem solved.

  • Splitting backup between two EHDs?

I hope to buy a new iMac this week. The HD is 640GB, if I remember right. My EHD for backups is only 300 GB, which is enough for right now, but I'm not sure what to do when I get more than 300 GB of data on my computer!
Would it be better just to buy a bigger EHD? Or can I use Time Machine to split my backups between two smaller EHDs? (For example, my jpg-containing folders would always back up to one EHD, while my png-containing folders would always back up to the other.)
I'd really rather just buy a second 300 GB EHD, if possible, because then I can start using it right away for selective duplicate backups of my really important stuff. Just not sure how that will work when I get more than 300GB of data on my computer.
    Thanks!

Time Machine can not work with more than one backup drive.
The rule of thumb for a TM drive is to size it to twice the size of the drive you want to back up. TM is not just a simple backup program. One very important reason to use TM is to be able to restore deleted or older versions of files. This requires more storage than just the size of the boot drive.
External hard drives are usually fairly easy to upgrade by purchasing a larger drive and installing it into the external case.
You can also choose to exempt certain large collections of data from the TM backup, like music, video, photos, or folders and then use a program like SuperDuper to run a schedule to back those folders up to a different drive on a regular basis.
You could also use your exising drive as a bootable backup with your OS and most important files copied on a regular basis with a program like SuperDuper! so that you have a bootable backup to test with, or to continue work with in the event your main drive fails.

  • File services sync between two locations

    Hello,
I have a situation where we have two locations - office and datacenter.
At the moment, we have snow leopard server running in the office doing the usual bits and pieces.  We have a lot of users that work from home, so we have put another snow leopard server in to our datacenter.
What I want to achieve is for both servers to sync the data shares - this is fine, can do that by rsync.
The main problem, is that I want home workers, or anyone connected to our VPN outside of the office to use the datacenter server, rather than pulling files from the office.
I have read about ip failover etc, but this doesn't help, as I want both servers to run simultaneously, and they are on different subnets.
I thought about using DNS for this.
Eg if I have two servers - server01 and server02.company.com, I would create a dns record for files.company.com which would resolve to the relevant server, and anyone in the office would pick up the office server ip as we host dns internally, and anyone outside the office would pick up the datacenter ip as they would see the public dns.
I know I could have two lots of shares configured on our employees computers, but it would be slick if I could avoid that and use one mapping.
Is this a viable option, or does anyone have any better ideas?
    Thanks

    Any ideas anyone?

  • RMAN backup to two locations

How can I write backupsets to two different locations at the same time . So, I have FRA area and /backup UFS mounted mount point . I want to write on both of them . Can anyone tell how can I do that at the same time ? Help will be appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,
I have to configure RMAN in such a manner that it has two backup destination
    1) FRA
    2) ANY OTHER DESTINATION
but according to our retention policy (15days) the obselete backup file should be deleted only from one location(FRA) but the other location's backup should persist until i manualy remove them.
did retention policy of RMAN and FRA is done seperatly?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Sharing a Time Machine backup between two Macs

    Hi
So I was running my music production software on a first gen Mac Mini.  I would store all of my project files on an external drive and backup that external drive to a second external drive using Time Machine.  I had Time Machine set so that it excluded everything on the Mac Mini except my original external drive.
Now I've stepped up to the latest and the greatest Macbook Pro 15 inch.  I'm running the same music production software on it and loading up all my files from the same external drive.  When I go to back it up with Time Machine, it wants to start a separate backup for the Macbook Pro, even though it is only backing up the same stuff from the Mac Mini.  The thing is that there aren't any system specific files being backed up, just my project files.  For the life of me I can't get it to continue the original backup.  I plan on using both Macs for music production and plan on using the same drive for both.  I would like to back up every time I finish a session on either computer.
Is there anyway I can get Time Machine on each computer just continue one backup??
I know I can access the backup from each computer by "Browsing Other Time Machine Disks", but I want to backup, not restore.
If not, is there any other software you can recommend?  Although I would hate to lose the backups that I already do have...
    Thanks!
    jg

That's probably a good option for you. It's not easy to keep a 3 way sync.
If you really want to keep certain files synced on your Mac Mini, you might want to look at ChronoSync. It appears it's a good backup-sync program. Don't know if will keep synced between the 2 computers and external drive without a little manuel effort, but would be easy to sync at least 2 devices, such as MacBook to Mac Mini, or MacBook to external.
If you don't need to keep synced files, then best option is to do a full TM backup of both computers. Since you have 2 externals, use one for each. You can still use TM to access files if you need, and if you have a hard drive failure, it's an easy replace drive and restore the whole computer from TM.
And don't overlook the option of File Sharing between the 2 computers to access each others files or a shared folder. That's a real easy way just to copy a few files when you need them.
Anyway, Good Luck and Happy Holidays

  • Time Machine backup in two locations

I would like to use Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro at home and also at work. Is there any way to do this successfully?

yes, but you'll have to manually switch the TM drive in TM system preferences.

Apple map is not showing the paths between two locations as shown in the previous version.

The current Maps app in iOS 6 is from Apple. It is beta software with known issues. The previous Maps app in iOS was from Apple, but used Google as the map resource. There is now a new Maps app from Google available in the iTunes App Store.

  • What makes my default project location to bounce between two places in FCP X?

I wonder what makes my default project location to bounce between two places in FCP X?The project I am working on is on my local disks which are backed up (daily) to external eSATA enclosure. If I run FCP X just by clicking its icon (not a project file) in most cases it opens FCP X with a project but in event library there is not files linked.Sometimes it expands the project’s library located on backup station.
To make active the the local version (get it expanded and access all the files related to the project, I have to: close FCP X, launch FCP X by click on a project or a library file, close FCP X again and then I can get the project and its content displayed correctly just by clicking on a FCP X icon.
After backup is made (I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup this volume) if I relaunch my FCP X, I have to start the procedure mentioned above all over again. What I am doing wrong?

Munas, what you describes sounds a lot like the problem I've been experiencing.
I have two matching external drives mounted. Drive 1 is the primary, Drive 2 is an identical back-up. Both identically formatted.
FCPX randomly opens drive 2 when I start the program, even when I click on a sidebar link to a project on Drive 1. The clips are often, nonsensically, shown as off-line.
I really don’t care if FCPX recognizes drive 2, in fact I wish it wouldn’t. I don’t, obviously, want to unmount Drive 2 just to use FCPX.
My workaround for this was to rename the Final Cut Events and Final Cut Project folders “FCE” and “FCP” respectively on Drive 2, and configure my back up utility accordingly.
Now, although Drive 2 is listed in the Events and Project Libraries on start up, FCPX doesn’t recognize any events or projects on it, and it sits there as an icon that can’t be expanded.  I can live with this until a fix comes, in fact I rather like it.
    Cheers

  • How do I set Time Machine to alternate between two attached external drives (so that if one fails I will have a separate backup to use)?

    Hi Everyone.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Right off the bat let me say I am using Mavericks 10.9.1 on a 2011 Macbook Pro and using all Lacie external hard drives.
I am trying to get Time Machine to alternate between two attached external hard drives, trying to be safe in case one of the backup drives itself fails.
I have both drives set in Time Machine.
From what I gather Time Machine should by default alternate between drives when backing up (I would assume it does one big initial backup on each then subsequent backups are just changes).
But this is not how it seems to be working and I cannot find a straight answer despite much Googling and Foruming
Unfortunately it seems to only be backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
There have been 4 backups since I set it up, all on "External Hard Drive 1", even though "External Hard Drive 2" is also attached and set in Time Machine.
I manually clicked "Back Up Now" and it started to work on "External Hard Drive 2" (like I want it to) for a minute but it appears to have stopped and gone back to backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
Am I missing something? Does Time Machine only move on to another disk when the first one runs out of space? Do I have to turn one off in order to force it to back up to the other drive (that would be less convenient of course)?
I am hoping that I am missing something and that it will just alternate between the two. Otherwise it is not the most comforting and thorough backup system as I had hoped when I purchased the additional external hard drive.
I have a 1TB drive and a 500gig partition on another drive, both dedicated to backups (my Macbook HD is 475gig). It will take awhile for each to fill up and who knows what could happen during that time. Having Time Machine alternate between hard drives would be a nice small bit of security if the worst happened.
I realize that there are tons of other options for backing up but I just want to use Time Machine if I can.
Again thank you for your help!

You cannot use Time Machine in that way. I'm not sure where you heard that Time Machine alternates between drives automatically. What you can do is create a mirrored RAID array for the backup. This automatically duplicates whatever is on one drive onto the other drive.
Both drives must be the same size, and prefereably, exactly the same make and model. RAIDs can be configured using OS X's Disk Utility.
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs.  Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

  • Automatic creation of transportation lane between two Plants or location

    Hi,
I am aware that when we cif Inforecords from R/3 to APO new transportation lanes automatically gets created between the Plant and Vendor.
The isssue which i am facing is that i want transportation lanes to be created between two plants . The TL should be created automatically. I could find the below details from sap help.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_scm41/helpdata/EN/3e/dfaf376ed96c21e10000009b38f8cf/frameset.htm
Transportation Lanes with Reference to R/3 Material Master Record
Storing a special procurement type with procurement type F: External Procurement and special procurement U: Stock Transfer (in the MRP 2 view of the R/3 material master record), means that the material has to be procured externally from another plant (supplying plant) or transferred from another plant.
To also be able to perform stock transfers for this material in the SAP APO system, there has to be a transportation lane from the supplying plant to the receiving plant. If you have transferred a material with this special procurement type from the SAP R/3 system, the SAP APO system automatically creates a corresponding transportation lane from the supplying plant to the receiving plant for the supplying plant (from the special procurement type) and material/plant combination. The transportation lane is given the creation indicator u201CSu201D for special procurement.
I am not able to make sense of special procurement U: Stock Transfer (in the MRP 2 view of the R/3 material master record),
Is this Special procurement some sort of customization as i could not find U: Stock Transfer  in my implementation.
Please help me understand this. What exactly should i do to create TL between Plants automaticcaly through Cif.

You need to define setting in IMG for this from source to Target location.
    Follow this path :
    Production->Material Requirements ->Master Data->Define Special Procurement Type
    example :
    Plant      1004
    SP type    40   Stock transfer (proc.from alter.plant)
    Procurement type     F    External procurement
    Special procurement  U    Stock transfer
    Plant                1039

  • Transfer of stock between two storage locations within a plant in two steps

    Hi,
We have a plant 6400 & we have two storage locations 6401 & 6402. Each storage location belongs to a department which are located at some distance from one another.
The material to be moved from one storage location to another using a truck.
For the above mentioned process can we have the following process
    (1) In first posting the material is issue from the storage location to a transit
    (2) In second posting the material from the transit is received into the storage location
I am looking for a feature that is possible between two plants, can we have a similar feature available within a plant.
    Warm regards,
    Umesh

    Hi Umesh,
It would be a business decision i suppose. If those 5 nos. are lost / damaged in transit & needs to be scrapped, then the ownership needs to be decided first. If it lies with the sender, then reverse the 5 nos. (MB1B mvt is 314) & then proceed with your scrapping or if it lies with the receiver then receive the 5 nos & then proceed with the scrapping.
Posting in system is one aspect, but a clear business rule is the key factor. So discuss with your materials mgmt personnel to define the process flow.
    Hope the above helps.
    Regards,
    Vivek

  • Inspection lot for Mvt type 311 between two storage location only

    Hello all,
I want to create an inspection lot only whenever my material transfer between two particulars storage locations. e.g if i have multiple storage locations, then i need an inspection lot to be created whenever my material transferred from say X S.Loc to Y S.loc only. For other transfers i don't need to create an inspection lot even from Y to X.
For more clarity, suppose i have ten storage locations. i have also created one storage location for my Lab. So I want an inspection lot to be created only when my material transfer to my Lab storage location from any other storage location, not when i transfer from my LAB to any other S.Loc or between two S.Loc other than LAB.
I have activated inspection type 08 but it does not have a restricition on S.Loc.
So please suggest some solution for the same.

    Dear Amit
In this case what you can do is make a copy of 311 movement type, say Z11. Deactivate QM for 311 and activate QM for Z11
So whenever you want inspection lot to be created use Z11.
You can activate and deactivate QM in QCCO > Quality inspection > Inspection lot creation > inspection for goods movement
