Backup Catalog

I cannot backup my catalog in Premier Elements 11.  It stops at 68%  when calculating media size.  What can I do to get past this block?

I am not one for backing up the Elements Organizer. But, when I saw your thread and questions, I thought that I would give it a try in view of your most recent comments. My Premiere Elements 11 and its Elements Organizer 11 are on Windows 7 64 bit.
I imported 65 photos into the Elements Organizer and did the Elements Organizer File Menu/Backup Catalog and the Full Backup. I did the Backup to a USB -  8 GB Flash Drive. Everything went surprisingly well
a. first the Copy Backup Files progress bar
b. then the message that "The backup completed successfully
When you are getting your feature message, does it specifically say that it is calculating the number of media files or does it just say copying backup files?
After I wrote the above, I came across the following articles that may be of interest in solving the issue.

I will see whatelse I can find since that was a December 2012 thread.

  • How to create and maintain a backup catalog, separate from default  location,  on and external HD

    How to create and maintain a backup catalog on a separate hd - separate from default location of the catalog?

    Simply copy the LR catalog backup file to another location. It’s quite small and only contains metadata e.g. your edit develop settings, keywords, captions, titles and camera exif data etc.
    The LR backup does not physically copy your image files. So make sure you have a separate system backup for your photo files and folders.

  • PSE5 - backup catalog fails - need to move my photos

    I'm trying to move my photos to my new laptop with PSE8. I bought a 8 gig flash drive to use since I have lots of photos. When I went to do the File - Backup Catalog it stuck at recovering at 66% for about 20 mins. then the screen went blank and it showed not responding. Did I do something wrong? Also, can I just back up and move only my 2009 photos instead of the entire catalog. I have 12,000 photos in PSE5 although most (90%) are email size. Thanks.

    I don't think I did it correctly. Actually I know didn't! I figured out how to use the flash drive and went in to my old desktop pc and copied the files from windows My Pictures and then put them in to Adobe on my new laptop. They are all transferred (took me over an hour to do the copy) but not "stacked". Each original photo is there in PSE 8 and the edited version next to it but separate - if that makes sense. Should I delete all these photos from the laptop and start again?  And I wonder how this will affect my photobucket files?
    And please dj_paige can you explain a bit more about copying the catalog file in Windows. You are talking to a older person here, not a technical minded on at all! Thank you. (Thought I did well just figuring out my flash drive! )

    Hi,
    You could runt the command %windir%\system32\sdclt.exe /DELETECATALOGANDKICKOFFNEW to delete the catalog. For more detailed information, please see:

  • Backup Error - 0x810000E4 Windows Backup has encountered a problem with the backup catalog

    Dear all,
    I'm trying to backup my files onto a 2TB big external USB disk. My computer is Dell Latitude E4300.
    When I run the backup, it runs normally but ends with this error:
    0x810000E4 Windows Backup has encountered a problem with the backup catalog
    When checking the zip files on the USB drive, it seems that only some of the files have been backed up. The same confirms the restore option when I browse the files in the backup.
    When I start the backup again, it continues - i.e. acknowledges the files already there and backs up a additional files but again fails after some time.
    Any ideas please.
    Thank you,
    Tomas

    Hello Tomas,
    This is not expected.
    Could you please collect the backup failure traces from %windir%\Logs\WindowsBackup and send them to my mail-id -

  • Lost captions when restoring from backup catalog.

    Restoring from my photoshop elements 8 backup catalog to Premiere Elements 12 running under Windows 8.1 was successful but for the captions which are not appearing. How do regain visibility of these captions?

    Where did the pictures come from - where they taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, saved from emails/websites etc, or where they originally synced from your computer ? If they were taken with the iPad/saved from via kit/emails then they should be in the backup so the restore should have copied them back. If they were originally synced from your computer then they aren't included in the backup so you will need to re-sync them via the Photos tab if you want them back on the iPad.

  • Current catalog is a backup catalog, is this a problem??

    Not sure how this happened but the catalog that I am currently downloading pictures to is a backup catalog.
    I think that I opened a back up catalog and then the next time I opened lightroom it opened the backup and did
    not realize I was in a backup catalog and continued to download pictures. By the way, I have lightroom 3.4.1.
    I have transfered lightroom catalog and all pictures to external hard drive with backup to a second hard drive and
    everything is there, but my catalog location is users/butler/pictures/lightroom/backup/2011-05-21 1935.
    If I open my main lightroom catalog it is missing tons of pictures but the backup file has everything.
    Is this a problem and if so how do I fix it?? PLEASE HELP, frustrated and confused!!
    Thanks, debbutler

    Yes, you have a potential problem when your working catalog is also the backup catalog. The problem is that now you don't have a backup.
    You have to make sure that the locations for the working catalog and the backup catalog are NOT identical.
    The location of your working catalog is displayed in > Edit >Catalog Settings >General Tab.
    The location of your backup catalog is displayed in the backup dialog that comes up when you close LR ; to make sure that the backup dialog appears select <Every Time LR Exits> in >Catalog Settings >General Tab.
    I've had this problem and solved it as follows:
    In your backup catalog select the location where your working catalog should be and make the backup. After this you have 2 identical catalogs in 2 different locations. In your OS (with LR still closed) navigate to the just created working catalog and double-click it. LR opens then with this catalog.
    Don't forget that next time LR closes and the backup dialog comes up you have to change the backup location to where the backup should be.
    Alternate procedure: In the Library Module (Grid Mode) >Catalog Panel select <All Photographs> or whatever the name of your main catalog is.
    Select >File >Export as Catalog and select the location where your main catalog should be.
    To prevent the problem from happening it is worthwile to ckeck occasionally in >Catalog Settings >General Tab that the working catalog is where it should be; and also to ckeck the location of the backup in the backup catalog.

  • Azure Backup CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 on Windows 8.1 Pro

    I recently installed the new Azure Backup client on a Windows 8.1 Pro computer to test the service. Every backup that is run is resulting in hundreds of skipped files showing the same error:
    CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500
    A random check of some of the files with this error revealed that some are backed up and available for restore whereas others do not appear to be available for restore. Further testing showed that the files that are available for restore can be restored.

    Hi,
    The error "CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500" was mentioned a lot in these several days.
    Personally I tested to perform a backup on a Windows 2012 R2 system with Agent version 2.0.8692.0 and it finished successfully. But we still reported this issue to product team and they are working on it now. If there is any update I will post back quickly.

  • PS Elements 5. Trouble restoring backup catalog - Organiser freezes

    Old computer died and i re-installed PS Elements 5.0 on a Win8.1 machine. The first time instal indicated i was working on "My catalog". I ran a restore catalog function to restore my backup, original "John" catalog. The restore appeared to work ok i.e. the backup file *.tly was processed but my photos didn't show in Organiser. Have since uninstalled Elements 5.0 and reinstalled. On the new instal Organiser is looking for catalog "john" and just freezes. An explorer search cannot find "john" on the computer. How can I either reset my computer for a new clean instal so I end up with "my catalog" and can try a restore again OR how can i restore my "john" catalog without using Organiser.  I have circa 6000 images which were/are catalogued.  Any help appreciated as I don't want to have to tag/collection all of them again.

    Hi,
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    The pictures I have stored independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
    about 7300.  Why would that be
    Some of the extra files should most probably be the breeze.xml files. These are created due to preprocessing of face data. I didn't quite get "duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup" ?? . Do you mean they have numbers like -1 , -2 etc attached. If yes, then they exist mostly when you had ediited files present in Organizer. Since these are part of version sets in Organizer so theie count is not shown in Organizer but you see it in your backup.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
    To restore the catlog, you will need to go to File>Restore catalog from ... , browse for the .tly file and hit restore.
    Incremental backup comes into picture when you had taken the backup of catalog before. So next time, you make changes to catalog and wish to take a backup , you have the option for an incremental backup which backs up only the changes done in Organizer since the original backup was taken. Incremental backup builds on the original backup and hence its not allowed to overwrite the original.
    Hope this helps. Thanks

  • Error ocurring when trying to Backup catalog in PSE 7

    I am about to upgrade my OS and want to start fresh.  Obviously, I want to backup my PSE 7 catalog beforehand so I can restore it and not lose the thousands of tags, etc I have applied.  I have carefully followed the steps and even ran some utilities (Repair & Optimize) that didn't return any problems.  However, I keep getting and error that says "an error ocurred while writing to file.".  I am attempting to backup to an external HD that has plenty of room.
    Any suggestions on what to try next or what could be causing this?  I reconnected all the images that I wanted to and removed any disconnected files that I didn't want from the catalog.  I have no idea what the problem could be.  I have plenty of memory and a fast processor.
    Anyone out there that can help?

    A number of people have reported this error message and have had trouble troubleshooting.  (PSE is notorious for uninformative error messages.)  A couple of things to check:
    - Make sure the file permissions on the external drive are set properly.  In Windows Explorer, try creating a couple of test folders, and then use another program like Notepad to try creating some test files in those folders.
    - What the external drive originally connected to an XP system and now connected to a Vista or Windows 7 system?  That can create obscure permissions problems.
    - Is the external drive formatted as as FAT32 or NTFS?  In Windows Explorer, navigate to Computer, right-click the external drive, and select Properties.
    Note that you can do a backup using a third-party utility or by copying all your picture folders with Windows Explorer.  Make sure to also copy the catalog folder (do Help > System Info to find its location).  Doing a restore from such a backup is quite feasible, though it may take a little extra time.

  • If you move files to external disk in PSE 7, are those files backed up when you Backup Catalog

    My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes less space on my hard disk and, more importantly, so my backups and restores don't take so long.    These are files that will not be edited in the future so why keep backing them up?  If I move files offline to an external disk using File, Copy/Move Files to Removable Disk will Elements backup those files as well as the files on my C Drive when I backup my catalog?
    Alternatively,can I move files to a new catalog along with the assciated catalog data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?
    Thanks for any help.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    If you use incremental backups, how often should you do a full backup?
    No hard-and-fast rule.  The more incrementals there are, the longer it could take to do a restore.  I suggest starting out doing a full backup every 10 incrementals.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    I also backup my backups to a 2nd external drive.  Can I use PSE to do that 2nd backup (including the incremental backups) or do I need to copy the backup folders created the first time to a 2nd external disk using Win Explorer?
    I think using Windows Explorer to copy them to the 2nd external drive will be easier and faster.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    I assume when moving to the new computer I just plug in the external drive containing the backup from the old computer (including incremental backup folders) and go through a normal restore.
    Right.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    When I do a full backup, does PSE include the picture files stored on an external drive?
    Yes.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    When I restore that backup to a new computer, does PSE restore the files which were on an external drive on the old computer to an external drive on the new computer, or would I have to move them from the new computer to an external drive  again?
    I think that if you select the Original Location restore option, it will restore them to the external drive, but I haven't tried that.  You could make a small test catalog with a few photos and try it.

  • Why no option to backup catalog on closing Lightroom?

    Hi there,
    I was wondering why Adobe have not given the option to backup your catalog on closing Lightroom?
    The harddrive failed in my computer. I installed a new hardrive etc, reloaded all the Lightroom files that I had dilligently backed up to a external drive (I have my images on both the internal and a backup on an external drive - and save my catalog files to the external drive).
    But there is one problem, even though I have the settings to backup everyday on startup, I have lost all of the last days work!
    This would not have happened if there was an option to backup on exiting Lightroom. (As most accounting and alot of business software does)
    Has anyone else wondered why Adobe has not given this option?
    Cheers,
    Ross Larsen
    P.S. I am using Lightroom 1.3.1

    Set your normal OS backup to handle the LR catalog (not the images).

  • Moving Photoshop catalog from PC to Mac - stalls at 'backup catalog step' - just keeps spinning with no action

    I am attempting to move all my Photoshop Elements catalogs from an old PC to a new Mac; followed the online instructions and made good progress converting catalogs to Elements 12 (from 6) until I got to the step of 'backing up catalogs so I can load them on an external heard drive.  That's where Photoshop stalls - just spins and no action.  Any idea how to complete this so I don't lose all those catalogs in the transition?

    stop the backup and try repairing and optimizing the catalog in the catalog manager (file>manage catalogs)

  • Backup catalog files not readable by Elements 6

    I have been using PSE 6 for quite a while and have backed up my catalog several times with no problem.  For some reason, this time, when saving it to my ext hard drive, PSE saved them in some odd tagged files which i will include.  One of the files I can open but it is not the catalog that I was intending to save.  I have tried opening each of the files but to no avail.  Is there any way to restore this catalog or is it lost forever?  These are the files that it saved in my elements sequel folder:
    backupCT DAT file 1KB
    Catalog PSEDB File 368KB (I can access this one)
    collstatus DAT File 1KB
    itemData.mk4 MK4 File 221KB
    Tagstatus DAT File 1KB
    Thumb.5 Cache File 2,143KB
    This is where the catalog was saved to
    computer>Exp Drive>From Elements>Elements Sequel>Elemenst Sequel
    Are there any downloads that I could use to open the cache file?
    Thanks for any help you can give.

    longliz88 wrote:

    It'll do no good -- the cach file only contains the thumbnails.
    Can you make another, full backup?
