Backup db using expdb/impdb (Oracle 11g Windows 2003)

Hi Guys,
I'm currently doing backups using expdb/impdb due to problems we have with BackupExec when I use RMAN. But what I want to find out is that would you call expdb/impdb a hot or a cold backup? Or should I say what happens when the user is trying to access the database while expdb/impdb is in progress?
Thank you.

expdp is not consider any form of backup. It's just an alternate way to export the data into dump files and import when required. You can not do any sort of recovery with expdp dumps.
depends on number of CPU's you have and number of parallel threads you are using, users may experience spikes in the busy database.

  • Can we use hints in oracle 11g version ?

    can we use hints in oracle 11g version ? is it working ??

    Why do you ask these questions? Have you looked at the SQL Reference Guide and Performance Tuning Guide for your Oracle version - both which covers using hints?
    Have you see a statement that is not supported? Or does not work?
    Or are you simply doing idle speculation and expecting forum members to spend their free time in answering a basic question where the answer is ridiculously simply to find?

  • Change IP Address on Oracle 9i Windows 2003/2008 Server

    If I will change the IP Address on an Oracle 9i windows 2003 Server, in a client/server environment, will that cause problems in the database.
    Ofcource I will change the lisner.ora script IP address and I will make new alias names on the clients.
    Thanks in advance
    Dimitrios

    Dear Dimitrios!
    If you have a DNS-Server in your network then it should be very easy to change your IP-Address because Oracle uses DNS-Names in its configuration. Therefore you don't have to change the Oracle configurationfiles tnsnames.ora and listener.ora. If you don't use DNS then there also shouldn't be any problems if you change your IP-Address in the tnsnames.ora and the listener.ora files.
    Yours sincerely

  • Oracle with Windows 2003 server

    Hi all,
    I am using oracle 10g /windows 2003 Server with latest patches, the problem is whenever i restart the server instance does not start automatically , i have to start the instance manually.
    how could i troubleshoot the problem , oracle not generating any error log for this, there is no information in alertlog.
    when i chek the db service in services.msc it said , service started and automatic.
    Thanks in advance

    go to services window and set all your Oracle services to automatic instead of manual. this will start your database automatically rather you start it manually

  • RMAN backup is getting failed after oracle 11g upgarde (11.2.0.2)

    Hi Basis Expert,
    We have done oracle 11g ugrade (11.2.0.2) in our Dev BI system.
    But after the upgrade the RMAN backup is failing. The backup use to work fine when we were on 10g (10.2.0.4).
    Has anyone face this issue earlier.
    Appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Anil Shenoy

    Hello Anil,
    Syntax is -
    ln -s /path/to/original/ /path/to/linkName
    Output will be -
    linkName --> original
    In your case, 112_64 is the link name according to above SAP Note and 11202 is the original/physical path. So, the command should be -
    ln -s /oracle/<DBSID>/11202 /oracle/<DBSID>/112_64
    And the Result should be, 112_64 --> 11202 (in short)
    So, I think you should change the existing link, 11202->112_64
    Thanks

  • Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3.0 in Windows 2003 with IBM Tape Not Working

    Hi,
    I am currently implementing Oracle Secure Backup. My environment is this:
    OS: Windows Server 2003 (32Bit) for all servers
    Database: Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0
    Tape Library: IBM-ULT 3580-TD4
    I will have to configure 2 machines to work with OSB: server01 and server02.
    Server01:
    This serves as the client, admin, mediaserver
    Server02:
    This will serve as the client, admin
    When I log in to Server01, in the device manager, I can see the Tape Drives (no warnings, no questions marks) so I think it's good.
    When I log in to Server02, in the device manager, there are no Tape Drives seen. Is is ok or shall i configure the IBM Tape drives to be also accessible since this is just the client, admin host?
    Also I have noticed that when I installed the OSB in Server02 (client,admin), when I am on the SCSI Devices, i dont see any tape device (since its not in the device manager). Because of this i cannot start OSB Services and cannot add this host to the mediaserver.
    Also, I am having issues Configuring the Library and the devices. I have read the official documentation completely but i think its very general and it does not present the detailed step-by-step process in installing and configuring OSB.
    When I issued: lsdev -lvg in the mediaserver , I can read an error: Warning: bus info unknown or drive not installed.
    Help is very much appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!

    I have resolved the issue. Ill close this thread. :))

  • Unpredictable problem using XMLTYPE in Oracle 11g?

    We recently upgraded from Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g, which caused some of our stored procedures to start acting funny.
    Our database stores BLOBs containing XML data in a table. We then asynchronously convert these BLOBs into XMLTYPE objects, and use them to perform operations in our database. This logic started failing when we moved to 11g.
    Our original code looked like this:
    PROCEDURE submitTpfdd(shipmentDataId IN VARCHAR2) AS
         shipmentData XMLTYPE;
      csid INTEGER;
      shipmentName VARCHAR(128);
      gk_namespaces VARCHAR(1024) := 'xmlns:a="http://my.app/1.0.0.0"';
    BEGIN
      SELECT NLS_CHARSET_ID('UTF8') INTO csid FROM dual;
      SELECT XMLTYPE(tf.shipmentData, csid)
        INTO shipmentData
        FROM SHIPQ.SHIPMENT_FILE tf
        WHERE tf.shipment_id = shipmentDataId;
      shipmentName := shipmentData.extract('/a:Shipment/shipmentName/text()', gk_namespaces).getStringVal();
      ... (more logic)
    END submitTpfdd;When we switched to 11g, this code started frequently failing with an "unsupported character set" error. It happens about half the time, and it's unpredictable. It will sometimes pass and sometimes fail, even if the same BLOB is being read both times. I haven't been able to reproduce the error with any of XMLTYPE's other constructors.
    Has anybody encountered similar behavior with the XMLTYPE in 11g? Should I submit a tracker?

    I have created a SQL program which can be run independently to reproduce the problem.
    DECLARE namespaces constant VARCHAR2(1024) := 'xmlns:a="http://morton.com/"';

  • 10g RAC on Oracle VM/Windows 2003 server

    Is there any documentation/thread/blog which describes installation of 10g clusterware on Windows 2003 VM on Oracle VM 2.1.2 using just direct attached storage? I created 2 Windows 2003 VMs. For OCR and Voting disks, I created shared virtual disks. These disks are visible from both VMs. When I try to install clusterware, both VMs blue screen about 50% into install. The error in CRS logs points to OCR disks not being in correct format. I have tested same process with VMWare server and it works fine. Do I need to do something different for Oracle VM?
    BTW this is not my first time installing RAC on Windows 2003. I have done more installations than I care to remember but always on physical servers. I followed the same process as I do for physical servers but it seems that Oracle VM does not like the shared virtual disks.
    Thanks...

    Check out my articles at http://dbasupport.com on 10g R2 RAC Clusterware setup. I was able to do that on my vmware BUT I hope to have the very irritating ASM scenario done before my 4th Article.
    Check it out.
