Backup delayed - couldn't mount - XP to blame?

I have a Time Capsule 500G. Occasionally TM fails to backup (or more exactly, defers backup) because it can't mount the target volume. At least that's approximately the error message; not having a log file makes it difficult.
The problem seems to occur when I have Windows XP running on Parallels and I mount my TC as a network drive to XP, which I'm doing in order to provide a target volume for XP's own backup utility.
Could there be some sort of conflict between TM and WinXP, when a TC is being shared by Mac and Win?
Thanks,
Chap

  • Backup disk couldn't mount

    Hi there!
I'm one of those happy Apple users that's having huge issues with Time Capsule. I've tried just about everything, but before I disconnect it completely, I wanted to shout out a question to see if anyone's got anything to advise.
I had the restart problem and Apple's support line helped me out with this, but what happened next was that it keeps Preparing back-up forever and then I get this error message: Backup disk couldn't mount.
Being a above average skilled user, but useless at more technical issues, I have no idea what this means and what I can do to fix it. I've tried some different advice given in the forums and I've also tried to contact Apple, resulting in nothing but silence from their part.
    Anyone recognize this problem?
    Thanks!

  • Backup Volume cannot be mounted

Time machine stopped working for me back in July. I've looked at every post and tried nearly everything, and I cannot get it working again. The error through the Time Machine pref pane is "The Backup volume cannot be mounted." The errors in the console are the following:
Sep 4 23:19:25 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Backup requested by user
Sep 4 23:19:25 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Starting standard backup
Sep 4 23:19:25 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Network mountpoint /Volumes/Backup not owned by backupd... remounting
Sep 4 23:19:26 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Failed to remount network volume.
Sep 4 23:19:31 tesla /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[50182]: Backup failed with error: 19
This is a network volume. It's a 750GB firewire drive, formatted HFS+ with a GUID partition table connected to an iMac. The iMac can back up just fine to it. My MBP cannot. It worked before.
It appears it is failing to remount the drive as root rather than myself, as backupd runs as root. Others are having the same problem, and I've seen no resolution for this particular issue. Is Apple even aware of it? Do they even read the discussion forums?

    Paul,
    Give these ideas some condsideration:
First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be found”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
Give each topic separate consideration. If one does not resolve your issue, move on the next one.
*Time Machine Has Lost Its’ Backup Disk*
If Time Machine was NOT setup to recognize a hard disk for backup, and “Back up now” was selected from the Time Machine Dock icon, an error would report “No backup volume has been selected. To select a backup volume, open . . “ The Console log would report:
    +Backup failed with error: 17+
But if Time Machine HAD BEEN setup to use a specific disk for backups, but if had lost its’ connection to the drive, it would report “The backup volume could not be mounted”. The Console log would say:
+FSMatchAliasBulk returned -35 while resolving alias to backup target+
    +Backup failed with error: 19+
When you check the Time Machine preferences you may see the name of your backup disk greyed-out and a generic hard drive icon beside it. More than likely this means Time Machine has lost is physical connection to the drive. Either the drive is not plugged in, it’s not turned ON, the drives’ cable is bad, the drives internal controller has failed, or the drive has a sleep function that is preventing it from waking when a backup is called for.
*Airport Has Been Turned Off* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
Look and the Airport menu at the top of the screen. Does it no longer display the radiating bands of wireless signal strength? The Airport has been turned off on this computer.
    Go to System Preferences.
    Select Network.
    Click “Turn Airport On”
    Now try backing up.
*File Sharing Has Been Disabled* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Disks" in the tool bar at top of window.
    Click "File Sharing".
Verify that "Enable file sharing" is checked.
If not, check it, click “Update”.
Once the Time Capsule has finished restarting, close Airport Utility and try backing up again.
*Password Has Changed/Become Corrupted* (For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users) #
[Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later: Time Machine - "Backup volume could not be mounted" after changing network volume's password]
    *Proper Computer Name* #
Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
According to THIS article [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
Also, if the name of your backup devise contains any special characters (like an apostrophe) consider removing them and trying a backup again.
Let is know if any of the ideas above helped.
    Cheers!

Try runing iTunes in admin mode. That fixed the issue for me. You can either right click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose to run as an admin each time you launch it or go to the advanced tab under security on the program itself and click the run as admin every time.

  • Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion

Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion on both my Macs. It backs up fine when ever I connect to the USB drive but now seems to want to back up hourly when before weekly was OK. When it does not compleye an hourly backup it reports a delayed backup - failure on both machines. How do it revert back to it reminding me to do weekly backups?

I'm having the same issue with Time Machine on OS X Lion!
    According to this webpage:     http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/LionChanges.html
Backups (i.e., Time Machine, SD, CCC, etc.) will only save the current "Version" of files.
The above statement sounds like the issue @iJRB and myself are having after upgrading to Lion where Time Machine shows the following error message below within "System Preferences > Time Machine"
@iJRB: Is this the error message you are seeing?

  • Mountain Lion refuses to install on Hard disk because it is used for Time Backups. I have mounted a different disk for tame backups and still, I cannot install the OSX. What do I do?

I donwloaded the Mountain Lion OSX and it would not install because it said that the hard disk is used for Time Backups. I then mounted a separate Hard Disk and started running the time backups on it.
Still, the Mountain Lion would not install on the main hard disk.
How do I convince it that the haerd disk is no longer used for time backups?

    Read through this: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4055

  • Since Lion, time machine says 'backup delayed' all the time??

Why, even after I have just completed a back up using time machine, is there an exclamation point and it says 'backup delayed'.  It never did this before I upgraded to Lion and it doesn't show me the 'oldest backup' in preferences anymore..just a dash mark..almost like it's not been saving my backups?  Anyone else experiencing this?  Is it keeping track of my backups?

For those interested..I reported the bug to Apple and this was their reply.  It is a known bug..so we just have to wait for the fix:

  • Time Machine shows Backup Delayed

My time capsule / time machine have been working perfectly
Totally hands off, hourly backups etc etc
Now I have the problem that every backup is delayed as the backup disk is not available
Once I select the backup disk manually the hourly backups resume as normal
When I re-start the problem is back.
So unless I remember to manually select the time machine disk I get no backups
This was working perfectly, before I restored some files from the time machine
    Help

When did you start seeing this issue? Have you downloaded Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Mac OS X v10.6.8 Supplemental Update? If you plan to upgrade to OS X Lion, you will need Mac OS X v10.6.8 Supplemental Update but I must be honest with you:
Early adopters to OS X Lion, like myself, have found issues like the one you're having with Time Machine on OS X Lion. Backups are showing as "!" in the menu bar and error messages "Backup Delayed: Time Machine could not find backup disk" and Time Machine isn't keeping records of past backups. When I noticed this once installing OS X Lion at first run of using the new OS, I had to reformat and erase my external 500GB G-Drive Mobile FireWire 800 drive and the issue still hasn't been fixed.
If deleting the corrupt preference doesn't work, try submitting feedback on Apple's Support page for Time Machine by visiting the link provided:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
The nice thing about the transition between OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Lion is the OS installs itself over Snow Leopard without you losing any of your files unless you find a way to do a "clean install".

  • ICal Backup.icbu couldn't be removed because you don't have permission to access it

    Hi folks,
I have started to get the following alert message on my MacMini Server (2 Ghz i7) running 10.7.4 ...
“iCal Backup.icbu” couldn’t be removed because you don’t have permission to access it.
can anyone explain what it means and if I need to do anything about it?
I'm using google as my principle calendar and email systems with iCal and Address Book synching to the big G.
    thanks
    Peter

    HI Emma...
Install the appropriate combo update ...
    For v10.6 > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
For v10.7 > OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo)
Either combo will reinstall the App Store for you which may help. Restart your Mac after the combo is installed.

  • Time Machine Message: Latest Backup Delayed

I'm a TM newbie. Someone else set up my TM to backup automatically every hour. Today I decided not to wait for the first automatic backup, so I hit the Back Up Now button as soon as I turned on my MacBook. I then got the message:
    Latest Backup: Delayed...
What does this mean, and how do I undo it?
P.S. - Is it possible that it had already begun doing the automatic backup, and when I hit "Backup Now," I somehow disrupted the automatic backup that was already in process?
    Thanks!

I haven't run across Backup Delayed, but if the last backup failed (which would presumably be your manually ordered backup) you could open the Console application and in the search field at the top type backupd (that's the Time Machine process). That may show the messages relevant to your last, failed backup. If you can't find those, then order a new backup and, assuming it too fails, check what error messages you get. Of course if the new backup doesn't fail then the problem is probably fixed.
Time Machine is set to automatically backup every hour but that does not conflict in any way with you ordering more frequent manual backups.

  • Time Machine backup volume will not mount

Once I goy Time Machine up and running over almost two years ago, I have had little cause for concern. A few lengthy backups here and there but I have been able to restore without any problems whatsoever. It has been extremely useful many times.
A couple of days ago, I noticed that the backup volume was not mounted (I backup to one of my four internal drives) and launched Time Machine. I got the error:
The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found.
When I run Disk Utility the generic disk icon is in the left hand pane but not the volume. None of the tasks are available except Erase and Partition - there is no option to Verify Disk, Repair Disk, Verify Disk Permissions or Repair Disk Permissions.
According to my logs, the last backup at 18:12 on 20th November was successful. I didn't notice that the volume had not mounted the until the next day.
I'm very concerned that I have lost almost two years of data security. Is there any way I can repair the disk or recover the backups?
    Thanks.

If Disk Utility can't see any partitions, it's not good.
    First, turn TM off.
Then try ejecting, disconnecting and powering the drive off for a few minutes, then reattaching it. Then try again with Disk Utility. If still no help, the drive is likely dead.
There's a very small chance that +Disk Warrior+ (version 4.1.1 or 4.2 only), or another heavy-duty disk repair app can fix it, if you already have one. But I wouldn't suggest spending the $$ for one unless you think you'll need it in the future -- DW is about $100.
Most likely, your disk is dead. There's a small chance that a +Data Recovery+ app such as +Data Rescue+ can recover some of the data. Check via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com for +Data Recovery.+ There are services and apps, none cheap. Some of the apps have a free demo or test mode that will tell you if there's anything that can be recovered, and perhaps actually recover a single file; then you pay for it and recover whatever else can be recovered. You'll need another external disk to receive the recovered items.
You won't get the normal Time Machine folder structure, though, just "raw" files. Even if you do recover files, you'll most likely have to figure out what goes where and copy them to the right places manually.
So I'd suggest immediately getting a new drive and doing a new TM backup to it, so you have something. Put a second partition on it that you can use for the recovered files if and when you do that.
If those are your only backups, I'd recommend getting a second external, perhaps a portable one, and using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make a full "bootable clone" to it, then take it to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, or other secure location. And/or, you might want to look at Mozy, Carbonite, or other online backup services.

  • Lion disc recovery, couldn't mount disc.

I am trying to perform an erase and install using Lion recovery, when I come to erase my Hard Drive it tells me the Hard Drive couldn't mount. Can anyone tell me why is this and how to remount the disc before eraseing it. Thank you in advance.

It's possible there's a problem with the Recovery Partition. Is the system you're running the same one the Mac shipped with?
Launch Terminal from your Utilities menu and enter this command at the prompt:
    diskutil list
    Press return.
If it sees your internal disk, note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to mount.
    Then, enter this command:
    mount force /dev/(number of disk)
Put in the value no parenthesis.
    Press Return.

  • Latest Backup: Delayed...

I am trying to back up my computer on Time Machine and my wireless internet keeps cutting in and out so the backup keeps getting interrupted. When I click on the icon on the top tool bar, it says Latest Backup: Delayed... Is there anyway to resume where I left off so I don't have to start over every time this happens.
    Any help much appreciated

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Just select +Back Up Now+ in that same menu. Time Machine will "recover" the previous interrupted backup automatically.
But if this is happening frequently, you need to fix whatever's causing the interruption/interference. I assume you're backing-up to a Time Capsule?
You might want to Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.
There's an explanation of some of the more common messages in #7 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If in doubt, copy and post them here.
