Backup disc disapeared?

I was on Safari, when I suddenly got the message that my back up disc had ejected. I did not do this, I wasn't anywhere near the desktop. I cut the computer off and rebooted, checking all my connections and the light comes on on my back-up disc, but no matter what USB port I put it in, my iMac wont recognize it. I check my system and it doesn't show up, just my blue tooth an my keyboard.
I am using a - WD my pasport portable HD it us a USB 3.0 and 2.0 compatible
I have tried everything I know and it just won't appear on my desktop.
All help appreciated.

If other USB devices are working, then the WD Passport my have failed.
If no USB devices are working, disconnect everything and reset your iMac's SMC.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Additionally if you are using that drive for Time Machine for backups, it might be a good idea to purchase a more rugged External Hard Drive.

  • Hi. Can I use a set of backup discs I made in 2010 to restore my iTunes library with the latest version of iTunes?

    Hi
I had my iTunes library on an external hard drive which has crashed. The data is unrecoverable. I've now bought a new laptop and I want to rebuild my iTunes library. I found a set of backup discs I created back in 2010 and although they don't represent everything I lost, they do comprise about 75% of the 25,000 songs in my library - so being able to restore using those would save me a huge amount of time.
The only problem is that when I load the disc, iTunes recognises it and even displays the tracks as a list - but I can't seem to find anyway of importing them other than manually importing each folder, which is only marginally better than having to re-import each individual CD again.
Previously when I've used the discs - i.e. the last time I changed laptops - I popped a backup disc in and iTunes automatically restored everything on it.
Is there a way of doing that that I'm missing, or has Apple decided, for whatever reason, to remove that functionality? I've Googled this problem and asked friends who are into Apple (the only Apple product I use is iTunes) but I don't seem to be able to get a clear answer.
    Any help appreciated.

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • How to open and read backup disc

I put the disc in drive and a window opens and I don't know how to get into contents of backup disc.

You need to define the AllowFileAccessOutsideOfWidget key to Yes.
You also need to define the AllowFullAccess key.
You may also need to define the AllowSystem key (to Yes of course).

  • Restoring Library from Backup Discs Error Message (69)

I Backed Up my entire purchased library onto 4 CD-R Discs.
I had to reboot my system due to hard drive crash, I downloaded iTunes again and put in the first Backup Disc. It gives me an unknown error message (69) and cannot read the discs.
How do I get my songs back?

I figured out how to manually search the discs and add the songs,

  • Backup discs could not be read error occurred (-50). HELP!

I'm using itunes 9.0.2; running Windows XP on Oracle Virtual Box in Ubuntu 10.04. the latest itunes will not work and 9.0.2 is the closest i can get.
One out of 4 backup discs contains only the itunes purchases and it works but a message pops up: +'could not restore some of the files from the play-list'+, +'they may be on other backup discs'+ even though all the songs on disc play. I put the next disc in and the following message pops up: +'the disc cannot be read. an unknown error occurred (-50)'.+
Any ideas why this is happening? I loaded the discs in the latest itunes on another PC and it is fine. would it be that I may be using an older itunes then when i backed up the other discs and so not compatible? is that possible??
Any help on how to get all my music back on would be great!!

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.

  • I have PSE-12 on Mac. Got message "scratch disc full" tried changing drive to backup disc. Now PSE-12 will not open to allow me to go back to original drive. What can I do?

Using PSE-12 on my Mac and got the message 'scratch disc full' I have backup disc attached to computer and tried making this the number 1 disc. I now can't get PSE-12 to open so that I can get back and reverse the order of these discs. What can I do?

Go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elemetns 12 settings
and any lockfiles with the same names. That library is hidden in 10.7 and up. To see it, click the Go menu in the finder and hold down the Option key and it will appear below the little house for your user account. While you're in there go to the saved application states folder and delete any for PSE.

  • I cannot find a document I prepared yesterday. How do I locate it in the external backup disc

I cannot find a document I prepared yesterday. How do I locate it in the external backup disc

    (1) Look in the System's Recent items, maybe it's available in this list)  [ it's in the  menu ]
    (2) Use the Finder's Search tool (cmd + F) asking it to retrieve files whose name ends with ".numbers"
And next time, take care of what you do.

  • Restoring songs from my backup disc of purchased song frm Itunes...

Awhile back ago I burned a disc with songs and videos that I purchased in Itunes. I burned them onto a cd.  Now I inserted 1 of my disc to restore but it's taking awhile.  How long does it take?
Should I try to insert another backup disc?

It should take about 20 to 30 seconds a song.  Depending on how long the song is.

  • Backup disc too small?

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and used a Time Machine backup to transfer all the files from my old MacBook Pro to the new one. Now, I am trying to set up Time Machine on the new laptop with the same external hard drive I was using a Time Machine backup disc with my old computer.  The backup fails and tells me the backup disc is too small.
Now, the backup disc has 58.43 GB available out of 499.97. The data on my internal harddrive is 141 GB, with about 607 GB free.
So, yes, 141 is more than 58. But why doesn't it just overwrite the old data? It is supposed to delete the oldest backup and replace it with the newest one, right?
Do I need to reformat the backup disc? Do I need a backup disc that's larger than my internal HD even if I'm not using all that space?

If you used Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to do that, when the first backup started, you should have gotten the prompt in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  If you selected "Reuse Backup," Time Machine shouldn't be doing a full backup.
If you used some other method, you won't get that message, and TM wants to do a full backup.  But since it won't ever delete your last remaining backup, there isn't enough room.
Your best bet is to erase the TM drive and start over.

The drive needs to be much larger than the amount of data it's backing-up.  Usually 2-3 times is best, but it varies greatly depending on how you use your Mac.

Can anyone please help me out of this horrible problem .

the thing is that i lost everything on my internal disc. and wen i tried to restore from a backup i had no longer privileges on that disc.
so yesterday i went to the apple store and they are going to crash backup my external disc and then putting everything that was readable back to the original drive.
Just for future reference, if they were Time Machine backups, all you needed to do was start up from your Install disc and use the +Restore System From Backup+ option. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that obvious.

  • I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule.

I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule. I have set it up several times without any apparent problems (I have even done a Hard and Factory reset). Everything seems fine until I ask Timemachine to 'back up', and then the problems start.
    Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. I bought the Time Capsule this past July and it worked fine for about a month then it told me it hadn't backed up in 10 days and was stuck looking for the backup drive. I called Apple and they said the reason was that the Time Capsule was in Bridge mode. I launched Airport Utility and sure enough, it was. I changed it to DCHP and NAT (Airport Utility -> Network tab -> Router Mode). After updating the Time Capsule, I couldn't even get on the Internet, let alone do a backup. A logged into the software for my cable modem and discovered that it too was in Bridge mode.
It turned out (for me) that neither should be in Bridge mode (which is for connecting two networks). Your cable modem only has one IP address. Your Time Capsule should be doing the NAT (Network Address Translation) which translates the internal IP addresses on your network to the one IP address your cable modem has. When I switched my Time Capsule to DHCP and NAT, it conflicted with the fact that the cable modem was also trying to do this. The answer was to turn this off on the modem (allowing all the packets to just go through the modem to the Time Capsule and let IT do the NAT). I did that last week and since then, my Time Capsule has been working perfectly.
    1) Go to your cable modem (via a browser, enter "http://192.168.100.1"). Log-in and find the setting that indicates NAT. If you're uncomfortable doing this or can't find it, call your cable company and ask Tech Support to do it for you. They can do it remotely.
    2) Launch Airport Utilty. Go to the Network Tab and change the router mode to "DHCP and NAT".
    3) You may need to restart your modem and Time Capsule. I can't remember if I had to or not.
I hope this helps. I tried many things but this is the only solution that fixed it for me. And it makes sense. Only one device, the cable modem or the Time Capsule, can be doing the NAT.

  • Time Machine not backing up - Backup disc could not be found

Time Machine has not backed up since April 2 because the backup disc could not be found.  It was working prior to this.  I cannot restore from prior backups - Restore button is greyed out.  Time Capsule is not connected in AirPort Utility.

Installed Dr. Cleaner 3/29 and Memory Clean 3/29 - both were updates.
That.....is the problem. Time Machine does not like "cleaners", "optimizers", "keepers".....anything like that. Your Mac does not need these types of applications since they generally do more harm than good.
Anti-virus applications will drive Time Machine crazy as well.
My advice would be to remove this type of software from your Mac according to the software manufacturer's instructions.
Then power cycle the entire network.
If the Time Capsule disk comes back into view, you should run a Verify Disk operation as soon as possible.  Your backups may now likely be corrupted, and if that is the case, Time Machine will not be able to back up until you erase the Time Capsule disk and try to start over again with a new backup.
