Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7
Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves. -
Time machine failed... Disk already in use
On one of my two MBP's using time machine, the 2.33GHz Mac constantly displays this message. I found that the problem exists because to time Machine disk will not unmount after each backup. If I physically unmount the disk, it will function normally.
What do I have to do to have TM unmount the disk after each incremental backup?Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup -
TM automatically ejects backup disk image when using Airport network disk?
I finally got TM functioning using an external HD connected to my AEBS network. It creates a sparsebundle on the external HD which turns into a disk image on the computer whenever it is backing up or I launch TM. On my wife's MacBook, the disk image automatically disappears after TM has backed up or I quit the application. On my MacBook (about a year older), the disk image stays there. When I try to eject it manually, sometimes it says it is still being used and takes a while before it disappears, but other times it goes away immediately. Why does this happen automatically on my wife's computer but not on mine. Same OS - 10.5.4. This is not a big issue, but it is a nagging one. Any insight would be appreciated.
I tried to start the backup again, after logging out and back in again (as I had done several times before), but this time the sparsebundle loaded ok and the backup started properly.
So there's no need for anyone to spend any time on me.

Using a disk already in use for Time Machine before
Hi,
I was using an external drive less than a week ago with Time Machine (OS X Mavericks). A few days ago, I upgraded to Yosemite, but decided to return to Mavericks not long after. To do that, I had to erase my hard drive, so that now the external drive I was using is no longer recognized as such by Time Machine...
I want to continue using this same external drive without erasing my old backups. Is it possible? Will my previous backups be kept unaltered if I press "Use this external drive for Time Machine"?
Thanks,

Time Machine cannot mount remote backup disk (ReadyNAS NV+)
Hello,
I own a ReadyNAS NV+ which I use as an external backup. It has a "Time Machine" backup daemon, so the iMac see's it over network. I used it for a couple of months without issues.
A couple of days ago I had to change the physical location of ReadyNAS. Now there are 2 switches between my iMac and the readyNAS.
Since I changed the physical position of the ReadyNAS I try to backup using time machine but it's not possible. Time machine hangs up when trying to up at "Making Backup Disk Available". Using the terminal I can clearly see that AFP has issues mounting the disk:

Finally Time Machine exists with error "Backup disk cannot be accessed. error 109".
Can someone give me a hint or two on how to solve this issue?
regardsNot a NAS-specific issue. The OS is trying to read a block of the sparse disk image, and the read is failing. Basically, the sparse bundle is damaged. You'll need to rename it and then try backing up again to a clean sparse bundle.
That said, make sure you're running a version of the ReadyNAS firmware that actually supports Time Machine. There are several AFP commands that were added for Time Machine that *must* be supported for correct operation, and older AFP implementations did not implement them. The reconnect errors suggest to me that maybe the firmware you are running doesn't support the Reconnect UAM, in which case it probably also doesn't support the replay cache, etc. If that's the case, then things probably won't work correctly without a firmware update even after you fix the corrupted sparse bundle.
Edit: actually, on further searching, it might be a NAS-specific issue. Certain buggy network switches do not properly support jumbo frames in mixed networks, which can cause read errors similar to what you are seeing when working with AFP. (This might have been your post on the other board.) In the Network prefs pane, choose Ethernet, click "Advanced", click the Ethernet tab, change Configure to Manually, and set the MTU to Standard (1500). -
I have a 1 TB Mac and I seem to have filled up a 500 GIG backup disk already. Should I purchase a 1 TB or a 2 TB disk for a new back up disk? I don't want to run into this problem again. Thanks.

Are there any files you could recommend that I exclude from the backup that would make my total backup smaller to accommodate the 500 gig drive? Or can't that be done? Apparently I am about 150 gigs over the limit. Thanks.
In that case you really should get a bigger external drive.
As to files Not to Include I'm not sure as it is not my computer. you would need to look through the folders on you Mac and make a decision which aren't important and which are. Definitely include all System and USER folder files. That doesn''t leave much to look at as OS X stores personal data in the User folder, unless you have manually move some of it.
Personally all files I have on one computer I have on ALL of the computer I own, Mac or Windows. Nothing beats redundancy when it comes to NOT losing your data. -
I noticed today that my last back-up was this a.m. and it has tried several times to back up since but I keep getting this message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “TimeCap”.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ MacBook Pro ."sparsebundle” is already in use.
I have never had this problem before and don't know what to do. I am not that great around computers so if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I did try to do some research but could not understand any of the content I read. I sure don't know what "sparsebundle" is and this is the first time I ever heard the term.
If anyone can help woold appreciate it.
I have Version 10.9.1This is a standard issue..
Been around since LION but you missed out.. !! Well the old rule applies.. there are three types of Mac users.
1. The bugs have bitten you, and you have done the work arounds.
2. The bugs are biting you and you are now trying to find out what is going on.
3. The bugs will bite you. And in the meantime you laugh at everyone with problems and say it must be all their fault. Doesn't happen to my system.
You were simply in the last group.. now, with the wonders of mavericks to help, you got bit.
The solution is simple.. unplug the power cord from the TC .. count to 10.. power up the TC again.
No luck look at the more technical help.
C12 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Your naming might also be an issue if this continues to happen.. see C9. -
MacPro backed up to Time Machine, added Mac Mini now get "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Jerry Booher’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use." error when Mac Pro tries to back up
It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)
See C12 and C17
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.
Welcome to Apple's beta program for everyone. -
My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. Pls help.
Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category. -

I just added an external backup drive to my airport router for my desktop and my laptop to use. Initial backups worked, but now I'm getting "... backup disk image ... /.../...MacBook Pro.sparcsbundle is already in use." This message is on laptop even after stopping timemachine on the desktop. The initial backup worked for both machines. Is this a timing problem? It shows the last backup happened earlier this evening, but I'm concerned about the major amount of work I did after that time.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! You can't use that configuration for Time Machine backups, if that's what you're doing.

I'm getting the following error message from my Time Machine for two days now:
"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Backup Files/Burke iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."
I haven't changed anyting lately and can't find the problem...Try just rebooting the TC.. or restart of the whole network, in correct order.. modem.. router/TC.. clients.
Read C12 here.

Look at the more like this on the right. it is a very common problem.. especially since ML we have this question 5 times every day. -
I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model running Mountain Lion. I have always been able to use Time Machine with my Time Capsule. Just today I have been receiving the same error message whenever I would back up my computer:
I removed my name before "MacBook Pro". It takes a long time "Looking for backup disk..." first. The disk I put with the time capsule is called Huge Backup, and in Huge Backup there is my sparsebundle file called "----- MacBook Pro." When I open Finder, open my time capsule, and then open my sparse folder, it should mount a drive where I can see my computer's backups. That doesn't work. Then I get this message:
I once again removed my name before "MacBook Pro" but I can open my sister's sparsebundle who is running Mountain Lion on the same network and her backups work fine. I have researched this topic and have tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility, remount all the drives, remove the drive and restart the backups, and even restart my computer and the Time Capsule. Nothing worked. It just was working yesterday, but now I get this in the settings along with a caution symbol in my menubar:
Is there anything I could do to fix this? Reconnecting it in AirPort Utility (5 or 6) didn't work. Also, for some reason, the error renamed Huge Backup to Huge Backup-1 as you can see above and below in the messages. I downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget and this is the error report I got. I replaced my names or private info with [-----]. By the way, the network is called NDR Network, and the Time Capsule is alled NDR Time Capsule. Here's the error I keep getting:
