Backup disk contents wiped and name changed

I have a LaCie Starck which I use - and have happily used for several years - as my Time Machine backup disk.  Recently it has mysteriously had all its contents wiped and has changed its name to "My Book".  What has happened?  How do I restore its proper functioning.  I've played around in disk utility with no luck.
Time Machine now also gives a message says it cannot find the backup disk.

Many thanks both.  The format was already Mac OS Extended, but I erased the drive and Time Machine now seems to be working again.  I still have no idea what caused this to happen.
Another drive image has also mounted itself on my desktop called "EFI" (see info below).  Goodness knows what this is. Another mystery.

Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Name's iMacsparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1 )

I checked the pondini fixes and ended up doing the following - in case this could help someone else with OSX Lion and Time Capsule... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
First, I downloaded and used Airport Utility 5.6 instead of 6.1 - BTW, I had to attempt download and installation THREE times before the program actually installed.  Be persistant.
Pondini #5: It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem.    See item C9.  I had to re-name my Mac, Time Capsule, network, etc... to remove all apostrophes and spaces.
Pondini #7:  If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion, it's not compatible, per RoaringApps, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well.   Use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons.   There may also be a file in Library/Application Support.
I then had to shut down computer, unplug Time Capsule, unplug modem; plug everything in again, then reboot computer; then had to go to Apple- System Preferences- Network- and reselect my Time Capsule to connect to WiFi again.
Then opened Time Machine preferences again and attempted back up - it worked!

  • Received msg that my MacBook is already in use and name changed to "Judys-MacBook-2.local"  Why would this happen?

When I opened my Mac I received a pop-up that "Judys MacBook" is already in use and name is now changed to "Judys-MacBook-2.local"
Can anyone explain why this would happen and if this is serious security issue?

Sometimes the warning means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
A third-party wireless router that has incompatible settings or firmware may be the cause. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • External Thunderbolt Drives Eject Randomly and Name Changes to Blank

I Have two external thunderbolt drives connected to the trash can mac pro ... sometimes they eject randomly with one drive renaming itself to blank ...
    Anyone ?

    Aloha,
It was a long week. Here is an update.
Had the opportunity to go to the Apple Store yesterday and purchase new thunderbolt cables, and hooked everything up this morning.
I disconnected the Seagate drive from the sled, and brushed the contacts.
The Seagate hard drive did not boot on my iMac and Disk Utility could not see it. That said, when booted to my wife's iMac, Disk Utility could see the drive, but I could not verify or repair it. The data from my wife's iMac is attached.
Also, I tried to run Data Rescue 4. It would not see the drive. I do have Disk Warrior, if that is a reasonable option to try.
Additionally, the LaCie (now connected to my iMac with a new thunderbolt cable) has not yet been ejected. The computer has gone to sleep several times and I have awakened it.
I very much appreciate your thoughts and time, And I look forward to your thoughts, To include any experience in getting the data off of the Seagate. It contains seven years worth of photographs, which I would hate to lose. I also got the message about redundant backups. There may be some of the backup in Crash Plan.

  • "Notify after old backups are deleted. Be notified if your backup disk is full and Time Machine deletes old backups to create space for new ones."  I would prefer to be notified BEFORE things are deleted.  Can the deleted items be recovered?

    Time Machine option #2:
"Notify after old backups are deleted" Wouldn't it be better to get this notification BEFORE things are deleted? I suppose the real question is, is it possible to recover files deleted from time machine?
The bold phrase above has a checkbox. But if I leave it blank it appears that I will receive no notification at all.
I am using MacBook Pro, OS X version 10.9.5

TIme Machine is not an archival tool. And no, you won't be able to recover the files that are deleted.

  • Time Machine backup disk changed name to "3-/9=/=87"

I upgraded to Leopard, and attached a LaCie drive, which Time Machine recognized and used as its backup disk. After formatting the drive, the name was changed to Time Machine Backup disk, but now it has changed to 3-/9=/=87. I tested Time Machine to ensure that it is indeed restoring files, and it is. Any ideas on the name change, and if it will affect Time Machine?
    Many thanks.

    My solution
I found that after trying a few things in the aforementioned thread that in System Preferences > Sharing > Options if I disabled SMB and only enabled AFP on my Mac Pro, which has my Time Machine disk and is accessed over my local network LAN by my Macbook Pro laptop, only then did the Time Machine disk show up in the Time Machine preferences in my remote laptop TM settings.
I suspect my laptop had been connecting to my desktop via SMB instead of AFP and thusly TM would not work.

  • TS1550 When backing up my iMac to the time machine I get the following message,  'The backup disk image "volumes/Data/My Name iMac(7).sparsebundle" is already in use".   The backup is not completed.  Any thoughts on what do to get the backups going again?

The auto backup to my time machine has developed a glitch which prevents the backing up of the iMac.  The message is as follows:
'The backup disk image "/volumes/data/Name iMac(7).sparsebundle" is already in use.
Any ideas on how to fix.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Restart the iMac and Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve that problem. If it doesn't work, read > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html

  • Time Machine looking for backup disk/not finding

Time Machine backed up the HD on my 2009 20" iMac up till Feb. 4 when I downloaded Since then there have been no new backups of my HD and there have been problems wihen I have Time Machine "on" with other applications (TextEdit, Pages, Adobe Bridge CS4) opening or not responding after being open and with Finder not responding. I have also had grey screen freezes multiple times so that I have to use the power button to shut the computer down. When I take TM off of the Automatic backups, most of the problems with applications quitting and the grey screen freezes stop happening. (Although I believe I've had at least one or two grey screen freezes even then.)
Today I've run Verify Time Machine Backups. It completed that. Then I turned on Automatic Backups again. But then it showed "Looking for Backup Disk". So I selected the Backup Disk. Then I checked back in a while and it still showed Looking for Backup Disk. I removed the selected backup disk, shut down and rebooted, and reselected the backup disk. It is still showing Looking for Backup Disk.
The Time Machine is a 1 Terabyte size. My iMac is using 203.6 Gigabytes of its 319.21 G space.
In looking at what my Finder is showing as the name of my Backup Disk, I see that it is showing my Backup Disk as Virginia's Computer (3). It should be showing my Backup Disk as Virginia's Computer. If this is the source of the problem, how do I get my Backup Disk named back to Virginia's Computer? Is it possible to get it changed back?
My TM is used as a router for two iMacs and up through Feb. 4 I was sharing files between both computers. When the problems started, I turned off File Sharing in the other computer (Jim's iMac). I had noticed that frequently my computer's name as shown on the other computer would be changed to Virginia's Computer (2) or Virginia's Computer (3) and I would change it back when I noticed. Perhaps this is how the problem started.

I finally contacted Apple Support. Three support people and seven and a half hours later Time Machine began working correctly. Multiple things were tried. The Time Capsule ended up getting erased. Many files and folders were deleted from several places on my hard drive. It seemed that the final ones that made a difference after the Time Capsule was erased were files that were in my Keychain.
I have to thank Apple's Support people for persistence, especially Jim who is the one who got things back to normal as far as the Time Capsule & Time Machine goes. I have to keep watch to see if anything acts up now on my hard drive and then the solution will go further. But the issue with the Time Capsule and Time Machine appears to be resolved!
    Thank you, Apple Support!!!

  • Cloning Install Disk to target backup disk...but...

In thread, now closed, from January, it was written of how one can clone one's install dvd to the target TM disk. I proceeded with the instructions (just below, copied from MB's earlier post), but read the following note at the bottom of the Carbon Copy Cloner window: +The entire contents of "Mac OS X Install DVD" will be copied onto "LaCie", merging the contents of the two volumes. Items on "LaCie" will be overwritten by items at the same path on "Mac OS X Install DVD".+
Not sure what to make of this, but I do not want to lose anything on the TM disk. Anybody know this technique and can explain that this will not actually overwrite what's on my backup disk (including TM and other files)? Thanks in advance.
    Post from Jan 08:
+I read this somewhere else and it works a treat.+
+Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your Install DVD staright onto your existing Time Machine volume. Use "copy everything" but don't tick "erase target volume". No need to create a separate small partition.+
+Afterwards "TimeMachine 10.5" appears in the start up disk list and it will boot from the installer, and you can do a whole disk restore directly, no need to find or use the install DVD.+
+All previous Time Machine data is preserved and TM carries on working.+

    Bimp wrote:
Is it possible to create a partition when I've already been using the external for both TM and other storage?
yes, it's possible but the advice you've got will work just fine with doing that. that said, I did just that - partitioned my TM drive and restored the install DVD onto the second partition. It gives me a very fast installer and I find it very useful.
start Disk Utility, select the whole TM drive (the model, not the name) and click on the partition tab. select your TM partition and click on the + below it. drag the slider to adjust the relative size of partitions and click "apply".
P.S. Disk Utility won't let you make a partition smaller than one tenth of the total drive size so you might end up with a somewhat bigger partition than you actually need.

  • Time Machine won't back up due to a full backup disk.

Recently Time Machine has been saying the backup disk is full and therefore it can't complete the backup.
    I have two questions:
    A) Time Machine is supposed to delete old backups to clear space. Why isn't it?
    B) What is the proper way to delete some or all of the backups for a computer? I ask because of a long and complicated issue that caused me to not have one computer backed up, so the other computer took up so much space that now there's not enough room for the other computer to perform an initial backup.

The solution is essentially "simple." You need a larger hard drive for these backups or you need to use a different backup solution. By this I mean using backup software that does not preserve an archive of old copies of a file, but simply erases old copies in order to replace them with the new copies. By replacing your backup drive can always accommodate the drive it backs up if it is large enough - say the same size. I can suggest:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
All of the above are capable of being scheduled. Synk Pro makes immediate backups of any changed file on the hard drive. You may configure it to archive changes (like Time Machine) or to delete prior copies.

  • TS1337 Time machine backup disk image can not be accessed

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me as I'm constantly getting the following message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/My name Time Capsu/My name's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)
Does anyone know what this means as I can't find anything regarding this message in troubleshooting?  My time machine has been running perfectly for well over a year until a couple of days ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I had this same problem. Unplugged the power for a minute and plugged back in after reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4984048
    Working for me now.

  • Could I have two Time Machine backup disks?

I have a MacPro with a second internal HD, that I have running Time Machine.
I just bought an external drive for backup, which I thought I'd also have running Time Machine.  But I see that TM will not really allow one to use two different drives automatically.  Instead you have to reset the TM prerence pane each time you want it to switch from one backup to another.
So, I wonder if I might just be better off with a Carbon Copy clone on the external drive, where I can set up automatic backups easily, and just have TM backup the internal second drive on the MacPro?
Also, another related question: when I change my TM preference pane, to have it backup an external drive, and then change it back to the oringinal, will TM just take up where it left off, or will it start to rewrite the entire HD?  I ask this because I first tried changing the TM preference pane to the external drive, and then changed it back to the original... but it started in on what looked to be a 2 hour backup.
Any tips much appreciated.  I always get a little miffed at how sparse the help instructions seem to be with Time Machine.  I like to set it and forget it... but the problem is I forget how to run it after 8 months!
    Thanks!

If you want everything to be automatic, that's the way to go.

It will take up where it left off.

The first backup after you switch will take longer than usual, because more files have changed than is usual.

  • My 2nd generation Time Capsule won't back up because the backup disk is full??

My 2nd generation Time Capsule-Machine won't back up because the backup disk is full. Ever since the latest OS software update I am not able to erase my time capsule and start over. I use to be able to go into the settings on my Mac and erase it and start over, but not anymore. What can I do? Is there a way to free up space so I can do backups again? I keep getting a notice saying that my backup disk is full and there is not enough space to to a backup for all 3 of my Macs. Any suggestions would help!!! Thanks

The airport utility should still allow you to erase the drive of the TC.. that means a full wipe.. if you want to keep anything from the old backups you should archive it first.. that option was removed on the v6 utility but if any of your computers still runs Lion or earlier you can download 5.6 airport utility or use the inbuilt one.
In mountain lion you cannot install the 5.6 utility but there are ways and means of getting around that.. it does work.. it is relatively easy to unpack the utility and extract the file and just drag it to the utility directory.
