Backup disk couldn't mount

Hi there!
I'm one of those happy Apple users that's having huge issues with Time Capsule. I've tried just about everything, but before I disconnect it completely, I wanted to shout out a question to see if anyone's got anything to advise.
I had the restart problem and Apple's support line helped me out with this, but what happened next was that it keeps Preparing back-up forever and then I get this error message: Backup disk couldn't mount.
Being a above average skilled user, but useless at more technical issues, I have no idea what this means and what I can do to fix it. I've tried some different advice given in the forums and I've also tried to contact Apple, resulting in nothing but silence from their part.
Anyone recognize this problem?
Thanks!

The hard disk is there, I can drag, drop, copy, delete files on that disk. There's is a big file call Serge'siMac_001ec205f583.sparsebundle, the file does not seem corrupted, I could probably drag it to the Desktop. How can I mount the backup disk.

  • TIME MACHINE EXTERNAL DRIVE BACKUP DISK CANNOT BE MOUNTED

    Hello,
Last week i brought a WD MY BOOK LIVE NETWORK DRIVE.
I hv 2 Windows PC and 1 MACBOOK. All data residing on these 3 computers i intend to back up.
One Windows PC i was able to successfully connect, 2nd Windows PC not yet connected.
Macbook connected on teh first day of WD installation. After that day it gives an error "THE BACKUP DISK IMAGE COULD NOT BE MOUNTED".
I hv tried various methods to rectify this error as discussed in many forums, but none seem to be helping.
Can anyone suggest how should i solve this.
I called WD, they told me to call APPLE as its a time machine problem.
I call APPLE and they are asking me to call WD.
i AM USING MACBOOK - MAC OSX VERSION 10.5.8

I just solve the problem after 45 minutes with the lervel 3 WD support. You have to return to firmware 1.02.06 since the 1.02.10 version has a network card driver error and in some configurations (a lot more) the disk just stay connected for a couple of minutes. To do that you have to manually return to old firmware but WD do not has the file as public so you have to call them. One way to stay connected a bit more is making a permanent ping to the disk.

  • HT3275 My backup disk won't mount on my desktop. The preferences window says it is not available. I am runng Lion on a late 2007 Macbook.

My external backup disk will not show up on my desktop anymore. Always did before. Using WD external backup disk.Any suggestions?

Try power cycling the entire network
That means powering off every device in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run 2-3 minutes
Start the next device connected to the modem next, and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
Check the network for proper operation

  • Backup delayed - couldn't mount - XP to blame?

I have a Time Capsule 500G. Occasionally TM fails to backup (or more exactly, defers backup) because it can't mount the target volume. At least that's approximately the error message; not having a log file makes it difficult.
The problem seems to occur when I have Windows XP running on Parallels and I mount my TC as a network drive to XP, which I'm doing in order to provide a target volume for XP's own backup utility.
Could there be some sort of conflict between TM and WinXP, when a TC is being shared by Mac and Win?
    Thanks,
    Chap

  • Time Capsule disk cannot be mounted

I use Time Machine to back up wirelessly to a 1TB Time Capsule. This has worked flawlessly until recently. (I bought the TC in late August 2008.)
Now, I get an error message that the backup disk cannot be mounted.
I cannot see the TC disk in Disk Utility, so I cannot run any disk repair there.
The only way that I have found that I can solve the problem is to disconnect the TC from the power supply, reconnect after a few seconds, and let the TC reboot. This repairs the problem for about 24 hours, and then it fails to mount again.
Any and all help/suggestions/advice gratefully received. I've also posted this in the OS 10.5 Time Machine forum.
    Thanks, John

  • HT3275 I am received an error on my Time Capsule   which states the backup disk image  "Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro. sparse bundle? is already in use.  so time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule - any suggestion

I've received an error message    Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule,   the backup disk image  /Volumes/Date/....MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

I've got mine working again by deleting a partial backup that was on the Time Capsule.
I mounted the backup sparsebundle, and then browsed the content and found a filestucture named <timstamp>.inProgress. I removed that and the followed the tip to disconnect described above. That did the trick for me.

I get message Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to MybookLive The backup disk image Volumes/TimeMachine RobertFurlong's Computer(2).sparsebundle is already in use.Any ideas?.

I have experienced the same problem on a MB Pro 2011 and a 2013 MBAir both with updated OS's. OSX10.9.3.  WD MYBookLIVE 3Tbyte.   I have found the only solution is to reboot the WD device thru Western Digital's software that you can access via the IP address for the WD device. For example, if you type the WD backup device's IP,  like ... "125.261.1.38 " in the Safari address bar, WD has built-in software the runs a program that allows you access to the WD unit to maintain it, turn it off, reboot it, partition it, etc.
Doing this, I believe disconnects or ?dismounts? the WD from TM and resets everything.  It works most times, not always, Sometimes you need to reboot the Mac too.
I'm more interested in what is causing this frequent failure on the WD.  It happens to me several times per week. I suspect, network failures or improper disconnections between WD and the Mac (not caused but the user) are the culprit but I haven't seen any blogs on a permanent fix. Spent hours on the phone with WD techs; they were clueless. I found the "fix" myself.
Further, I often get an associated reply to "dismount the WD" with the "sparse bundle.XXX is in use" error. But when I go to Finder or Disk Management to find out what's mounted on the Mac, the WD is never mounted, even when the TM backup is working properly.  I find the WD device under SHARED in Finder. Its never mounted, so I can't dismount it.

  • I loaded in Lion - but my time capsule will not back up. I get an message: couldn't complete backup due to a network prolem. Also it says "make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network, and that the backup disk is turned on.

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the  backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill

I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

  • My back up failed and I get a messageTime Machine couldn't complete the backup to "TimeCap".  The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Mary Fleming's MacBook Pro .sparsebundle" is already in use.

I noticed today that my last back-up was this a.m. and it has tried several times to back up since but I keep getting this message

I have never had this problem before and don't know what to do. I am not that great around computers so if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I did try to do some research but could not understand any of the content I read. I sure don't know what "sparsebundle" is and this is the first time I ever heard the term.
If anyone can help woold appreciate it.
    I have Version 10.9.1

    This is a standard issue..
Been around since LION but you missed out.. !! Well the old rule applies.. there are three types of Mac users.
    1. The bugs have bitten you, and you have done the work arounds.
    2. The bugs are biting you and you are now trying to find out what is going on.
    3. The bugs will bite you. And in the meantime you laugh at everyone with problems and say it must be all their fault. Doesn't happen to my system.
You were simply in the last group.. now, with the wonders of mavericks to help, you got bit.
The solution is simple.. unplug the power cord from the TC .. count to 10.. power up the TC again.
No luck look at the more technical help.

  • Time Machine / Time Capsule Error: Backup disk image could not be mounted

So I'm trying to back up to time machine, which used to be working fine, but I have this problem happening on two computers now (which probably means the error is in my Time Capsule.)
The Time Capsule shows up on my "shared" list in my finder windows.
I can connect to it, and open the folder inside, and SEE my two disk image files in there.
But Time Machine gives me a "The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted" error. No other information.
If I double-click on the disk image file directly, I get an error "The Following disk images failed to mount" and then it lists the file and says "Resource temporarily unavailable."
    Help, please.

I'm caught in the same loop, with no end in sight. I've only been using Time Machine and Time Capsule for 2 months. This week it stopped working. First error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Checking the Time Machine preferences, "Last backup" would read "backup failed"
When I got this error, all the wireless functions went offline, even thought the TC light was still green.
I would shut down, shut down the Time Capsule, shut off my modem reboot everything in order.
    Next error message:
"Disk repair. The disk 'Backup of [my computer]' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must backup your data and reformat the drive."
Then: "Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume ... Time Machine preferences ... "
I spoke to someone at Apple, who sent me the Time Machine Troubleshooting page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US
    I went through:
    1. updated my system software
    2. updated the TC firmware to 7.4.1
    3. dragged the sparsebundle to DiskUtility. It took a while (more than an hour?) but said the disk could not be repaired. When I tried again, the repair function wouldn't run.
    4. tried to delete the sparsebundle, but it would choke at almost the end, sometimes it would just crash the finder, sometimes say "Sorry, an unexpected error occurred," sometimes "Operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use." I even tried to Stuff the bundle with 'delete original' checked, but the stuffing, after about 15 hours, jammed near the end (stuffed 20 gigs of 35 gigs).
    5. tried to reselect the TC, and run backup anyways ... now it can't find the volume, back to the error messages and crashing Finder
    6. checked password in Keychain, all ok.
    Now what??
Do I use Airport Utility to erase it? At least TC is still showing up there. Or press the rest button on the back of the Time Capsule to reset to factory defaults?
I've resigned myself to losing my backups. Now I would just like to get it up and running again.
    In hopes,
    Linda

  • Backup disk image cannot be mounted.

I have tried and tried to get Time Machine up and running with no success. It has given me several error messages...the latest of which is "The backup disk image could not be mounted."
I can see the disk in my "shared" finder window, make changes but every time it tries to backup, I get an error. It DID backup once when i first got it but have not been able to do so since. I have restored to factory settings and tried all kinds of suggestions from posts...can anyone help?

Welcome to the discussion area, Stacie!
There a number of possible reasons why you are having difficulties, so it may take a number of steps to try to get this solved.
First, let's make sure there are no permission errors on your Hard Drive. To do this:
Note the name of the hard drive on your computer. If you have not changed the location or the name, it will be at the upper right of your screen and the name will be Macintosh HD
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
On the left side of the Disk Utility window, click to highlight the drive that has exactly the same name as your hard drive on your main computer screen.
Now, look for a button that says "Repair Disk Permissions". Click that button. It will probably take 30-45 minutes for the check to complete.
When the process is complete, restart your computer.
Click the System Preferences (looks like a gear) icon on the dock and then click Time Machine
Click the name of your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups
Wait a few minutes, then click the clock shaped Time Capsule icon at the top of your screen and click Back Up Now.
You will probably see "Preparing...." for a long time. Let it run, even if it goes for 45-60 minutes. If it still says "Preparing" after 2 hours" click Stop Backup Now and post back for more steps.
