Backup drive failure: "Cannot allocate memory"

iMac early ’09.  8GB RAM. OS 10.6.8, 8. Apps and OS auto-update, so should be current.
Backup disk 2 TB Hitachi Touro Desk Pro HTOLDNB20001BBB (USB 2.0). New Nov 2012, initialized and worked until now. Hitachi lists my Mac and OS as compatible. No firmware updates available.
I have screen shots mentioned in post, but no way to attach them here? Links follow post.
Morning message from Time Machine saying hadn’t backed up in 10 days, so investigated. No sound from Touro but on and connected. Disconnected>reconnected power and USB, then rebooted iMac. During reboot message box “..doesn’t recognize disk,” w reformat as an option.
Touro not listed as a device in Finder window and doesn’t turn up on desktop as before. But, Sys Profiler (screen shot) and Disk Utility (screen shot) do see it; First Aid doesn’t offer Verify, so can’t test. Tried to reinitialize as Mac Ext. Journaled, Zero Out Data (exctly as initialized when new). Initialize failed. Tried to initialize repartitioning to one partition, and again two partition, GUID scheme. Partition failed with error: POSIX reports: Operation could complete. Cannot allocste memory. No sound from Touro during any of this.
Rebooted from CD and ran all of the above again with identical results.
Have reviewed related threads without much success.
I’ve done no disk image restore because I don’t understand how to work with them.
Also haven’t gotten into Terminal to try anything from there.
I’ve attached 3 screen shots of some Activity Monitor info, plus the Sys Profiler and DU page. Rare as it is, I’m suspecting the Touro HD, based mostly on the fact there’s no sound of a disk in there. Never any problems using a 5 GB G-Drive x4 years until size forced a replacement backup drive.
A couple of threads here suggest upgrading to Lion/MLion, but I won’t do that without backup and really don’t want it yet, anyway. Do not use or want iCloud, either.
At the moment I’m completely without backup and uncomfortably exposed. Any assistance sincerely appreciated.

It wasn't a dismissive chuck it -- simply pointing out that buying a new disk and making a new time machine should be Job #1.  Figuring out whether the old disk is defective or just needs a few rounds of fsck can wait until you are no longer "flying without a net."  If the disk does turn out to be ok, you can use it to periodically make a bootable clone of your drive.  You really should have both -- a bootable clone brings you back up quickly from one kind of disaster (an upgrade that goes bad being the most probable of that type) while regular Time Machines are your best protection against a disk that goes bad.
I speak from some experience -- after a few months of occasional hangs, and a disk that would not fsck clean, my disk failed yesterday morning.  Fortunately my backup was from Saturday night.  A trip to the staples to buy a new disk, to the Farm King for a #6 torx wrench, digging around for a tiny screwdriver, and I had the drive in.  Then I had to install 10.6.0 on it from my install disks, and restore the TM backup, and run all of the updates, and it took about 10 hours total.  If I had had a bootable 10.6.8 clone it would have knocked about 6 hours off of the job...
Once you migrate to 10.7, a bootable clone is an absolute necessity.  I have heard stories of people having their installs go bad, and then the booting off of the recovery partition and re-downloading the os software and loading the TM backup taking DAYS.  Which means not happening if their network is too flakey to stay up for days.
But to repeat -- your most important worry right now should be making sure you have a backup.  Then when you are covered, you can go about figuring out if your old disk is reliable or not.  If not, then you will want to buy yet another disk to use for your clone.

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. I formatted it and moved all my files to there, I got it so my macbook's hard drive wouldn't brake and I lose everything on my macbook.
    Is there any fixes?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Using Disc Utility to copy my hard drive to a brand new external drive and am having the error "Unable to create...(Cannot allocate memory)".

I'm not very tech savvy but am trying my best to use Disc Utility to copy my hard drive to a brand new external drive and am having the error "Unable to create...(Cannot allocate memory)".
Last night no problems, woke this morning and it was freezing so I forced a restart and got the grey screen with the folder and question mark. Ran off to best buy to get an external drive... Please help! Thank you!

I have done both. When I hold down the "C" key it pauses for a few seconds while the cd spins and then the flashing folder icon appears.
Could be you have the wrong cd/dvd.  The mac will only boot a supported cd/dvd for your machine. The flashing question mark indicdates your machine could not find a valid os.
When I hold down the "option" key for the startup manager the cursor comes up and moves but the actually manager doesn't come up no matter how long I leave the laptop on.
Not sure.  Could be your machine does not support the startup manager. You would think the machine would ignore the key.
Where did you get the dvd?  What is the number on the DVD?
What machine do you have anyway?

  • Unable to copy hard drive on to external device from Disk Utility. Getting error message "cannot allocate memory".

I am trying to retrieve the information on my hard drive after I spilled liquid on my keyboard . I can get to Disk Utility by using the boot up disk but when I try and copy the hard drive to an external device using "New Image" it tells me it is unable to create a copy because it "cannot allocate memory".

Were you able to get any help with this problem? My MacBook Pro out of the blue wouldn't boot up all the way and now I'm trying to get a copy of everything onto the new external drive using disc utility but am having the same errors as you! Thank you for sharing any tips!! -Norah

I am also getting error message "The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory"  when attempting to create a new "event".   Any ideas?
If I had a application disk, I would unistall and reinstall FCPX.  I am assuming there is a way do do this without a disk - just have not been able to easliy find out how.
I am using an IMAC Core i7 with 8GB memory, OS version 10.6.8
    Thanks

Well it did NOT work.  Here is a screen capture as FCPX loads showing the drive while it loads. Then when it is loaded, NO drive showing up in the Event Library ( I have turned off the external drive).

I have a fairly recent MacBook Pro (~2010) and installed a new Intel 510 ssd.
When I go to format it, I receive "Pisox report: Cannot allocate memory"
I tried formatting with an external enclosure and it worked fine, but no luck in Disk Utility or on the command line.
I tried this in the install wizard of Snow Leopard.
I've seen many reports of this, but no luck with any solutions.
    Thanks for any help.

Still nothing solution except replace SATA cable?

  • Can't restore iPod classic 60GB video.  Cannot Allocate Memory - Disk Utility

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've been searching the boards and am yet to find a result.
I have an old iPod classic 60GB (video) which has a dodgy HDD.  It was clicking and in a constant sad face/charging loop.  I've managed to get it display "Please restore iPod" message and it is now being recognised by my macbook.  I've tried to restore it via iTunes but when I try that I get an error message tht says "The iPod could not be restores because it is busy".
I've tried toformat the iPod using Disk Utility too but i get an error:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory
The oddest thing is that under disk utility my iPod drive is showing up as a 2TB drive:
All I'm realy trying to do is restore the iPod so I can try to recover some of the tracks using Disk Drill.  Can anybody help?

See if you can find a window based PC and try to do a Restore there.

Hi LInc. I tried your choice and succesfully installed over a 16GB pendrive. But could not do that with the 2TB green caviar... I also found that there are some issues with this kind of drive in the fourth bay, so I will change it to see if there is any difference. Cant make it work with TMachine also (known issues there too).

  • POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory

    Hi all.
Please forgive my naivety. I'm a newbie here.
I have searched endlessly to find a solution to my problem, but cannot seem to find one.
I have just replaced a hard drive on a 13" Macbook pro (purchased end of 2009). It developed a fault, and would not boot. When turned on, would only produce a blank screen with a flashing folder featuring a question mark.
When going through disk utility, the system could not detect any internal hard drive, which made me believe it was faulty.
I ordered a 500GB Toshiba Hard Drive, and installed it as it should be. In Disk Utility, the system detects the Toshiba hard drive (it comes up in the list you'd expect it to). Whenever I go to 'Erase' or 'Partition', however, I get the following error message.
    "Disk Erase/Partition failed
Disk Erase/Partition failed with the error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory"
Is anybody able to offer this novice any suggestions as to what I might do? I have tried some "Terminal" entries, but they don't seem to help in the slightest.
    Thanks in advance,
    L.
P.S. The Macbook is using Snow Leopard.

    Hi again OGELTHORPE.
I've already run two hardware tests. One quick one and one extended one. It was unable to pick anything up.
It's like everything is running perfectly, but when I go to erase the HDD or partition it, it pops up with the error message. Even when I try to erase and partition using "Terminal", I received the same error message.
It's beginning to do my head in, but will see if replacing the SATA cable will make any difference. If it doesn't, I'll hazard a guess it could be the Logic Board.
    Thanks again for your suggestions!
    L.

I've tried with other audio CDs and get the same error.
I also tried the device succesffully (ripping and reading) on a mac osx computer to see if it was a hardware device issue.

  • "cannot allocate memory" When trying to start a new project in FCPX

So I am I getting the "cannot allocate memory" error whenever I try to start a new project in FCPX
    System specs:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon

      VRAM (Total):          1024 MB
"Movies" folder is on a drive with about 120 GB free. The folder is not locked. Imovie uses the same folder, and that works.
The account is not a server account.
I've removed all preferences and all references to FCPX, reinstalled, no difference.
I have tried every suggestion on every apple support discussion thread, save reinstalling the OS, which I will not do. Nothing works.
FCPX won't let me select a default location for projects, either.
This is the only application on my system that doesn't work. Anyone have any suggestions?

    I figured it out:
FCPX does not support NTFS drives, even with Paragon NTFS working perfectly for everything else on the system.
I guess Apple (just) assumes that nobody will, or should, be using any other filesystem than Mac with FCPX.
I wasted hours looking for a solution, when a better error message besides a misleading "cannot allocate memory" could have been something more useful.
    Not impressed.

  • TNS:cannot allocate memory - is there limit to the num databases on one box

    Hi,
    Server Spec:
Windows 2008 R2 x64 with all updates applied
Oracle 11.2.0.1 Standard Edition with Patch 16 applied (which matches all of the live databases version)
    10GB RAM
I have a standby server which has all my standby databases on it
I have recently added about 8 new standby databases taking it to 102 and since then I keep getting an intermittent TNS error; TNS-12531: TNS:cannot allocate memory
I have scripts that loop through all the databases one at a time, they start the standby database, apply new archived redo logs and shut the database down
This has worked perfectly for years but I started getting the issues after added a few more databases, it probably failes 1 in 3 times so it is not consistent.
With all of the databases just idling the server is using 6GB out of the 10GB available RAM so there is plenty of free memory
If I remove half a dozen databases from the scripts it starts to work again.
I created 2 new listeners and split the databases so half run on one listener and half on the other, it still has intermittent failures
Server has been restarted many times and sometimes will run through a couple of times before failing and sometimes will fail on the first run through
Failures are normally towards the end of the script, ie. has applied the logs to 95 databases and fails on the 96th!
I've reorded the databases in the script and it always fails towards the end, not on a specific database
I have also added restarts to the listeners during the scripts which made no difference
I have now ammended my scripts so the actual windows service is not running for any database and the script does a net start before applying the logs and a net stop afterwards. It now runs through without a problem but I would like to get to the bottom of the issue and keep the windows services running as starting and stopping them adds time to the job of apply the logs across all the databases
    Thanks
    Robert

Just as note don't add this Value by yourself , you have to depend on document .I'm not sure I understand? There are no real suggestions in the doc, only one example
TNS-12531 On Windows 64-bit [ID 1384337.1:}You need to check the third value for the registry entry \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\:

The third argument is the maximum amount of heap memory allocated to non interactive desktops. Increase this third value and check when the TNS error disappears. There is no optimum value, it depends from one system to > another.
Restart of System may be required for changes to take effect
I have set the third number to 2048 and it has been running fine since

  • Db_load error: Cannot allocate memory

    Hi
when I try to import an dump file, i always get this error:
db_load: BDB2055 Lock table is out of available lock entries
    db_load: Cannot allocate memory
    I executed "db_load -f outdb/outdb2 -h env xass.db"
and i have set max locks by:
    dbenv->set_lk_max_locks(dbenv,1000);
    but it doesn't work.
What should I do to prevent this problem?
Thanks for your help in advance
    Mark
    Update:
I have doing some tests, and i found that if I increase the number of locks by "set_lk_max_locks" in DB_CONFIG file,  the operation of db_load will success.
The point is that the larger db file may need a very big value of locks, so why "db_load" doesn't release the locks during the running procedure? Is this a bug for bdb?
becuase I can't increase the number of locks infinity!
if not, How can i cause "db_load" release the locks of transaction?
    Does anybody can help me?
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
If you are importing a dump file into an existing environment and opened with the flags of(can have more) DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_TXN, then it is true you may see the error about "lock table is out of available lock entries" when the dump file is very big. The db_load process will not release the locks since it needs to provent other process from accessing the database being built to provide data consistency in the transactional environment.
The usually way for loading a database from a dump file is to specify an empty directory as the home directory. By this, the database will be created in a private non-transactional environment, and you can copy the database into your running environment after the db_load process finishes.
