Backup DVD failure

I'm unable to read, write, erase or mount some backup DVD's I made using Retrospect express 5.0. At the time, I was using OSX 10.2.
From their support website, I understand that this version of Retrospect lost OSX compatibility when OSX went to 10.4. However, I would like at least to reclaim the DVD-RW's.
Although I've been using my superdrive fairly regularly with other DVD-RW's, the ones holding backup info by Retrospect seem to be effectively destroyed, and the backups are useless. The Retrospect app does not detect them, possibly due to the compatibility issue, but there is no way to know if this is the cause.
Some of the backups do not mount, and others mount in the finder as "blank CD", but one that has no capacity. The finder reports insufficient space when I try to burn even a small text file to it.
Disc Utility fails when asked to erase these discs (I/O error.) Is there any way to make the discs usable again? Apparently restoring anything from these backups is out of the question, but I'd at least like to get the discs back.

I have an external firewire drive that I use for recent backups
What is the storage capacity of your external FW HDD? Is it paratitioned? How many partitions? How much data do you have on it?
Perhaps one day I'll wipe it and lay on OS X.
What I would do is to backup everything you want saved, reformat, partition and zero the HDD, then clone your internal HDD to one partition using SuperDuper, which will make a bootable clone of your HDD on the partition. If you are interested in doing this I can give you detailed directions for setting the HDD up.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has suggestions on partitioning and backing up. However, he insists on using Retrospect, which I have found to be clumsy, unintuitive and invasive, and which you have experienced in a not very positive way. I use SuperDuper for everything.
Can I boot from a firewire disc with a successful OS X install?
Once you have created a bootable clone of your HDD, you can boot from it and it will be exactly what you have on the internal, at least what was there when you last updated.
Good luck.

  • How do I use backup DVD to restore

Hi and thank you ahead of time for any help you may provide.  I have a Satellite C655-S5082 laptop.  I have basic computer knowledge which I have discovered ranks in the "not much" category unless it is spelled out relatively simply.  I was trying to uninstall the Zynga toolbar and somehow deleted most of my downloaded programs including my email!  None of the shortcuts worked and most of the program was gone.  (Windows Live Essentials, Adobe, Java, Microsoft Office Starter and I am sure others that I haven't found yet)  Some are an easy fix as I can just download again.  Email was/is more of a problem.  I downloaded the program again and recovered some of my emails with Recuva. (I miss Outlook Express) I remembered that I have these backup DVD's that might put things back where they should be!  Not the Recovery ones, I don't want to wipe everything out and start over.  I get started with the Restore, but then am unsure what to do and nothing I can find really explains it step by step.  I get to where it tells me to "Browse or search your backup for files and folders to restore" and am unsure what steps to take next.  It doesn't tell me.  I think I just want to restore everything to where it was.  Can you help please and will it work?  System Recovery did not work, and in my search for making it work, I followed a suggestion to turn it off and on again and lost previous restore points. (Please don't yell too loudly)  Thanks again!

Will I be able to use the daily backup discs at all afterward?
Backups of files should be available. But make new copies of important files anyway.
You wouldn't want to restore from image backups.

  • How do I burn a backup DVD of my music on my computer

How do I burn a backup DVD of my music on my computer?

well-iDVD Used to be included, but now it's not  =-( I think it's around $30
you could try using "Burn" which I think is freeware and will burn basic DVD video discs. Otherwise, you're gonna have to buy something. Yeah, mac's gonna take some gettin' used to, likewise, if I was to try and use a PC, it'd take some getting used to as well. iPhoto might help you with your photos and stuff and it may be included. You may be able to use right click on the movie and burn it to a disc. Dunno if it'll play back on a PC, though... if you had a cloud account or some storage space online you could do it that way, but, enough
    well, I tried

  • Can't copy photos from iPhoto backup DVD - Privileges Problem

I have created several DVD backups of photos from iPhoto, but when I open the DVDs and try to copy and paste photos it says that I can't because I don't have sufficient privileges. I know about the possibility of clicking on the "sharing and permissions" and "Ignoring ownership on this volume" tabs from the get info section, but it is not possible for me as the DVD's info comes up with that area translucent, thus I can see those options but have no possibility of choosing any of them in "sharing and permissions".
Does anyone know a way to overcome this?
Does this mean I have to do something like use SUDO commands or something else complicated just to copy and paste photos from DVDs???
Is there not an option to make backup DVDs on iPhoto which are copyable?
Why would anyone backup photos so that they can't be accessed to copy and paste?
    Thank you

If you made the Back Ups with iPhoto's Share -> Burn command then when you insert the Disk into the Mac it will appear in the iPhoto Window. Drag the Events from the Disk to the Library heading in the iPhoto Window to restore them.

  • Can't create backup dvd ! Impossible de créer DVD de sauvegarde

Hi, before formating my hard drive, i want to save my file, i go in "Files---Library" and i can't find option create backup DVD, got only Organize/export library or import liste , can you help me please ?

That feature has thoughtfully been removed from 10.4. You will have to use some other process - external to iTunes - to back up your files now.

Hello. The problem is as follows. SQL Express 2008 R2,

    Hi GeorgeKochkin,
As Shanky post, you can review or monitor the single database backups via the above scripts. You also can find the backup history for all the databases on a single instance. The following script shows the database backups status, history of their when they
are done based on schedule, at where are taking and when, backup types , backups physical device and size of the database backups and time to perform backup and all other related backup statistics.
    USE msdb

  • [Multimedia] dvd9to5 - Backup DVDs

heres a PKGBUILD for a perl script that _apparently_ is able to rip and compress dual layer dvds to single layer size AND include the menus!
[edit] it didnt burn the menus, just the main movie.. however, the process was painless [/edit]
fyi, it needs alot of space to rip, encode etc.. id recommend ~15-20gigs free on the drive you chose as your workspace (in the /etc/dvd9to5.conf file)
enter `dvd9to2.pl -h' to get the help menu
im not sure if using the -D option (Delete unneeded files, i only found out about it after the test) will mean you dont need as much space during the rip, or if it just deletes the files on the dvd that arent used before its burnt..

The backup DVDs for TV shows are recognized by iTunes, correct?
    But they won't import?
That is horrible! Glad to hear your music is OK, though - that is a bright spot.
How are you trying to get them back into iTunes - by using the steps in this article, or some other way?

  • Ordering Visual Studio 2013 backup DVD

    Hi,
I just purchased VS2013 download version (i have been using VS2010). In the past, there was an option to order a DVD for backup in case if my computer took a dive or the network was unavailable or Microsoft security was compromised or ....
In any case, does anyone know who to contact to have them tell me how to create a backup DVD for VS2013 or how i can order this now?  I wasn't sure where to post this, please direct me if possible.
    Thank you!
    ilikecoding

    @ilikecoding,
Please follow pvdg42's answer about who you can contact. You need to ask the vendor who sold you Visual Studio to get that DVD.
Or if you want to do this by yourself, you can do the following:
    1. Download the ISO from here:
    http://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs
    2. Verify your ISO checksum by refer to here:
    http://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/visual-studio-2013-iso-sha1-vs
    3. Burn your ISO into DVD:

  • Creation of backup DVD's since you will not allow the installation DVD to be used.

I now understand that you refuse to let me use the installation /back up DVD as an installation / back up DVD and insist that I make my own back up DVD’s. I have gone through the usual nightmare trying to find your instructions and can find none.
How do I go through the excess steps to create back up DVD’s for Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements that you will not allow the installation/backup DVD to be used for?
I bought DVD's to be spared this nightmare.

The chat folks got the Premiere Elements installed with a herculean effort including downloading off the Internet.  The Photoshop Elements installed fine.
My request was based on the legal agreement.  It read to me like I had to save the application from the hard drive to a DVD to get a back up copy made and that that was the only way I was allowed to do it.
The chat folks, based on the severe problem I had installing Premiere, are mailing me a replacement DVD to use as a backup which is the sort of media I would expect.  I guess the legal language as I read it deviates from the normal situation.
Thank you for the follow up.

  • Why will a Leopard backup DVD not work on G5.

    A couple of Leopard issues:
1, When I a make a dvd backup of my Leopard dvd using either Disk Utility or Toast it will work fine on the intel but will be spit out of the G5. The G5 cannot make double layer so I must rely on a computer that does! My G4 can make double layer but it is 400 miles away now! When is a copy not a copy?
2, Leopard disk utility repair permissions takes a long long time. It gives the errors discussed on other posts but why such a long time?? By the way, the Diskwarrior site gives some cautions about repairing permissions but does not address the inordinate amount of time, with respect
    to Tiger, issue.
Other than the above and some applications no longer launching or working properly I appear to have two stable systems working. As I have done for years I install a new OS on an external drive, find out what works and what don't and in a few weeks upgrade the main drive. I usually use Supperdupper but found out it does not work on Leopard, a least for me! So I have not yet figured out how to make an archive copy of a Leopard system. Hard drives are like people, they eventually die. I have not tried a restore using Time Machine so I do not have any faith in it yet!

The fact that your G5 cannot make a dl DVD means nothing. I am sure it can read it, and that's all that counts. If you can play a movie on the G5, it can read a dual-layer DVD. You have some other issue there.
I would also point out that not all DVD DL blanks are equal and some machines can only read the + and some only the - types. A homemade dual-layer DVD is not the same as a commercial one.

This is a known "issue" which has been discussed here many times. We do not know why it takes a long time. Only Apple knows.
