Backup error- no write permission on external disk

Time Machine has been working fine until yesterday when I got the above error. I had write permission but root did not. Rebooting did not solve this problem. But ejecting my external disk and re-inserting it, did work and now everything is fine. Any idea what could have messed up permissions? I am posting this in case the same thing happens to another user-just eject your disk and re-insert it.

What filesystem is on that drive?

  • Time machine not backing up, no error message, plenty space in external disk

    Hello,
Every time the Time Machine starts a back up, it stops 2 seconds later, it records that the back up has been made, but no file gets updated. It gives no error messages. For it, the back up has been made, when in reality it has not. There is plenty of space in the external disk (twice as much as the space used in the Mac HD). Do you know what may be going on?
    Thanks

  • I can't write to a external disk in my MacBook Air

Hi, I have a (Samsung M3 Station External Hard drive (1.5T) ) and i want to use it  in my MacBook Air, but i'm having some problems with it. The MACBook Air recognizes de disk and I can read the information but is impossible to copy or  write  any information on this disk.
Is there any chance to use an external drive whith MAC computers?

Your external disk is probably formatted with the NTFS file system (Windows).
OS X can't write to the NTFS file system.
If the external disk will only be used with your MBA save any data you don't want to lose and use Disk Utility to re-format it with an OS X supported file system.
If it needs to work with both OS X and Windows machines then FAT32 or exFAT are the only compatible file systems.
There is third party software available that will allow OS X to write to an NTFS file system but I have no experience with that so don't know how well it works.

  • I cannot access iTunes on my desktop.  Works fine on my laptop.  Message says "The iTunes Library .itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission."  The disk is not locked.

I cannot access iTunes from my deskyop.  Worked great until a couple of days ago, then I now get the message that "The iTunes Library .itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."  I have not turned on any parental controls on the desktop.  I have reloaded iTunes several times.  No luck.  I've run virus scans several times.  No luck.  I've restarted & tuned off the computer several times.  No luck.  I've uninstalled iTunes then reinstalled several times.  No luck.  Any thoughts?

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • Best BackUp application for backing up 1 external disk to 2 one.

I was trying to use BackUp from Apple to backup my 1TB external disk to my second one but when second disk was full BackUp stopped backing up because second disk "was just full". So I changed settings to keep only files from last 4 weeks but it doesn't help me because I need to back up more often and It is not useful for me. I would like to use back up app which will back up until disk is full and then automatically will rewrite old data on 2 disk as TimeMachine does it.
Which free backup app does it?
    Thanx

somewhat similar to time machine, yet a little more versatile, are these commercial apps: ChronoSync and [Tri-Backup|http://www.tri-edre.com/english/tribackup.html].

    Wireless Configurations
Ensure the default (linksys) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios for dual band routers. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try Mixed mode, single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or Mixed on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Backup errors in PSE 12 to External 2TB WD drive on Macbook Air

I have PSE12 installed on a Macbook Air using OSX 10.9.4 and I'm trying to back up to an external 2TB WD hard drive that I have backed up to before.  I can see the drive and contents in finder but after 5 attempts to back up I keep getting an error writing file message.  Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening or how to fix it?  Alternatively, if there is a better backup solution out there I would consider that too.  Thank you in anticipation.

Thanks for the reply!  I was, however, looking for some insight from someone who maybe had a similar setup going and successfully trouble shot this problem.  As I said, my macbook pro works in this setup without any problem whatsoever...so while not technically supported, doesn't mean it's impossible.. or even difficult.

  • How do I move time machine backup on filled time capsule to  external disk

TIme machine backups from imac and mbp are currently on 1TB time capsule running out of space.
I want to split the time capsule and move just the imac backups to a new external drive which I want to share with a new macbook air.
The new external drive has been set up with mac OS extended with a GUID partition.
THe instructions  on MAC 101: time machine Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive tell me to drag "backups.backupdb" to a new drive but I can't find it. I have just upgraded to Lion thinking I would find it now but it is still not there. Is this becaue I have both imac and mbp backups on the TIme capsule?  Here is a screen image of my DATA folder. Desktop  seems to be empty. A search for "backups" finds nothing.
EVen if I found backups.backupdb I am not sure whether I should have the external drive connected to the time capsule or the imac to move this file. It will be kept as an external drive connected to the time capsule so I can use it for both the imac and the macbook air.
And I am not sure whether I first need to set up the new drive as the time machine backup drive on the new macbook air or do it after I move the file.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

oops, I just found how to find backups.backupdb by myself, or at least with help from:

  • Cant import CD Write permission error though write permission is active

I am getting an error while trying to import a CD to Itunes. The error is that I don't have write permissions on my Music folder. But I do. I also have it set up so that child objects inherit, so I have write permissions on all folders in the My Music folder. This is on my desktop Win2k PC. I don't have the problem on my laptop with XP.
    Any ideas out there?

If you go to the folder containing the files in question. Select Get Info from the file menu. Toward the bottom of the list is OWNERSHIP and PERMISSIONS. Set it to read/write or unlock it and apply to contents.

  • Boot Camp Error "You cannot partition an external disk drive"

Hi all - I am trying to install Windows XP Pro via Boot Camp for the first time. I have all four bays of my MacPro (circa 2007) filled with hard drives. I boot off the first bay, and have a cal digit raid card that controls the other three hard drives into a RAID5 array. I believe that the raid card may be the culprit.
I am trying to install boot camp/WinXP on the first drive. I get the error in the title above when I try to run Boot Camp. I have ejected the RAID5, and I have rebooted to no avail.
I cannot wipe my first drive/boot drive clean. I just wish to partition it via BC so I can switch between XP and Mac OSX. Any guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Tri

Try removing the other drives is almost always essential with a Mac Pro to get Windows to work. Even Windows 7 doesn't understand seeing Apple GPT/EFI during install - they can be reinstalled later.
Or it could be that any hardware RAID controller also has to be removed. Like Apple's Pro RAID or ATTO FC.
Even w/o the CalDigit and just Apple GPT you would have gotten an error message.
BCA is still after all these years unable to understand and work with a Mac Pro properly. A one-trick/ one-drive only utility that is stumped when it runs into a dual drive setup. Which way why I gave up on using Mac Pro for dual-boot and built some PCs just for Windows 7. I install Windows on PC, then transfer the drive to Mac Pro and it works just fine!
Xserve RAID Card: Boot Camp does not support RAID configurations
Xserve RAID Card: Boot Camp does not support RAID configurations ... Boot Camp does not support the installation of Windows onto a Mac using hardware or software RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives). This includes Microsoft Windows built-in software RAID as well as the Mac Pro RAID Card.

  • Time machine can't make backup on external disk

I'm using an external disk to make my backup with time machine. Therefore I formatted the disk for Mac OS Extended initially and the first backups went fine.
    Now backup never finishes successful.
The external disk is connected via my airport extreme (wireless). I already did a disk repair but this didn't help either.
What is causing the problem and how can I fix it?

Technically, that is not supported by Apple, although many folks (including me) are doing it anyway: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html

  • Restoring files that were on an external disk

    Hi!
Time machines does a backup of my Macbook Pro as well as of an external disk on which I keep multimedia files.
Entering Time Machine, I'm able to retrieve files that were on my external disk no problem as long as the external disk in question is connected to the computer. Then, I'm able to go back in time, and search for files.
However, if the external disk is currently not connected to the computer, then, when I access my Time Machine backup, I do not see this external disk listed (I see only my Macbook Pro folders), even when I go back in time. So I do not seem to be retreive files associated with this external disk.
    Is this normal?
What if I loose my external disk, how will I be able to retrive the backup files from my Time Machine backup disk?
    Hope this is clear...  :-)
    Thanks

Since you haven't got any replies so far here is what I would do, but don't know whether it would work. Worth a try.
Connect the external drive and run a manual Time Machine (TM) backup. Disconnect the external drive. Pretend you have lost it
Connect another GUID Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format hard drive with a partition of the same size as the external drive and rename the partition to the same name as the external.
Can you now see the TM backup of the external drive?
