Backup errors in PSE 12 to External 2TB WD drive on Macbook Air

I have PSE12 installed on a Macbook Air using OSX 10.9.4 and I'm trying to back up to an external 2TB WD hard drive that I have backed up to before.  I can see the drive and contents in finder but after 5 attempts to back up I keep getting an error writing file message.  Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening or how to fix it?  Alternatively, if there is a better backup solution out there I would consider that too.  Thank you in anticipation.

Thanks for the reply!  I was, however, looking for some insight from someone who maybe had a similar setup going and successfully trouble shot this problem.  As I said, my macbook pro works in this setup without any problem whatsoever...so while not technically supported, doesn't mean it's impossible.. or even difficult.

  • External CD/DVDRW drive on MacBook Air OSX Lion 10.7.5

After a recent update, my external CD/DVD RW drive will write cd's/dvd's, but will not play dvd's like it did just days ago.  I tried restoring to a point where I knew that it worked, no solution.  I repaired disk permissions, no solution. Checked for any new software, still no fix.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

To caveat this problem, I can no longer sync my Garmin 401 with Garmin Base Camp on my MB Air.  This occured at the same time, and I get the same error message "The disk you entered is not recognized by this computer" (or something along those lines) with the option to ignore, or eject.  Both issues began at the same time, and corresponded with the update that I installed earlier this month.  Any assistance or future fixes are appreciated.
Also- the dvd i'm trying to play is a store-purchased DVD, brand new, tried the one that it played just two weeks ago, and another one, neither of which played.

First, restart the MacBook Air and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this solves the problem.

  • Can I backup my external SD Card(on my Macbook Air) to my Airport/Time Capsule

Just purchased Airport and was successful setting up Time Capsule to back up my Mac Air and Mac desktop....Regarding my Macbook Air, I had to use the external port and keep a 128GB SD card there for my iTunes and iPhoto library to save space...When I try to select it to be excluded in the Time Capsule preferences window, it will not allow me to highlight it...I can see it...I just can't select it..Help?

When I try to select it to be excluded in the Time Capsule preferences window, it will not allow me to highlight it...I can see it...I just can't select it.
This happens when a drive is not formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Perhaps you forgot to format the drive when it was new before you added data?
Time Machine will only back up a drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.

  • Problems with my external USB 3.0 (Toshiba) hard drive and Macbook Air 2012

I can't seem to get any help on this from Apple and I am tired of ti I have a new Macbook Air 2012 model and have several Toshiba external USB 3.0 drives. I did the Mountain Lion App Store 10.8.2 update and all of a sudden non of my drives are mountable or accessible. I've been in IT 16 years and have never seen anything like this. The drives are physically fine and I can see the mapped partitions on a Windows 7 machine just fine and even use HFS Explorer to view the directory structures. The data on these drives is extremely important to not only me, but also the DoD who I am working with on a major project. Now I can't get to my documents to edit them or pull down the virtual machines I setup for my labs.
I've done all sorts of research and googled myself to death. I even foudn the "missing because Apple pulled" 2.0 update to try and fix this issue. Whatever was done with ML 10.8.2 on these notebooks renders the USB ports useless. Does anyone have a solution to getting these drives to mount?

    I have the same issue.
I have two disks HDTC720XK3C1 (Portable Toshiba Hard Disk, USB 3.0 + 2.0, 2.0 TB). Purchased on the same date and same model.  One inexplicably stopped working.
When i connect the drive, the systems show an message that say:
"You need format the drive <x> before can you use it
Do you want to format it"
I attach the two pictures with the screen error and disk  managment.
Question for the group:  These devices seem not very reliable ? this type of error the warranty covers?  Sugestions ?
i think, that a backup tool should be secure. This is the 7th time I use it and the data is completely lost. Opinions?

  • Problems with iomega External Hard Drive on MacBook Air

    Hi community!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Air and an external hard drive and I'm wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.
I own a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I connect my iomega 500GB external hard drive, the Finder is able to pick it up, but when I click on the drive name, it spins forever without the Finder responding for a long time (it basically crashes the Finder with a spinning ball staying forever). The light on the external hard drive flashes intermittently when I first plug it in, but after that stays constantly lit. So I guess the disk has power, but something else is wrong with it.
It was working fine earlier today but I accidentally pulled the cable out while the disk was working. I'm hoping this hasn't permanently damaged my drive.
Any help on what I could do to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    SV

You might try launching Disk Utility, and then select the drive in question to run a "Verify disk" on the drive. This may indicate any errors in the file system of the drive that might be preventing the successful reading of the disk.
If the disk is empty, you may want to re-partition and reformat, so as to start with a "clean slate".

  • WD external 1TB not working anymore @ Macbook Air

    hi there.
After hours trying to figure it out, I just realized that I have too an OLD WD 1TB that has the sata brdge together with the drive itself... problem is, my Macbook is not recognizing the WD passport anymore. It is my time machine backup drive, so I am kind of upset...
There is a way, any way to put this drive again working, in another drive case or whatever?
I already updated the drives, I have 2 others external drvies, one from iomega and another one from WD, olders, and both are working.
i bought this one january/2013 in LA. How old are they?!?! gosh...
    I have a MacBook Air 13", MACOSX 10.8.
here is a photo from the drive, after I had opened the case.
Thanks for any help or hint.
    Cheers form Brazil,
    AM

Yup, that is WHY you never buy WD external HD, they cheap out and save 50 cents by making the controller board and SATA bridge card the same unit
Toshiba is now doing the same thing, avoid them as well
Purchase Seagate and Hitachi to avoid that (Hitachi are the best ext. USB drives without doubt)
    see here all about it:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
There is a way, any way to put this drive again working, in another drive case or whatever?
ONLY if you had another identical HD you could swap the controller boards.
. It is my time machine backup drive, so I am kind of upset...
You never should have let yourself be in the position of having a single external DATA copy, ever
hard drives are way way too cheap to let that happen.

    That doesnt mean anything
Hard Drive Warning (all makes and models)
Ironically but logical, new hard drives are far more fragile than one that has been working for several months or a couple years. So beware in your thinking that a new hard drive translates into “extremely reliable”!
Hard drives suffer from high rates of what has been termed "infant mortality". Essentially this means new drives have their highest likelihood of failing in the first few months of usage. This is because of very minor manufacturing defects or HD platter balancing, or head and armature geometry being less than perfect; and this is not immediately obvious and can quickly manifest itself once the drive is put to work.
Hard drives that survive the first few months of use without failing are likely to remain healthy for a number of years.
Generally HD are highly prone to death or corruption for a few months, then work fine for a few years, then spike in mortality starting at 3-4 years and certainly should be considered end-of-life at 5-7+ years even if still working well. Drives written to once and stored away have the highest risk of data corruption due to not being read/written to on a regular basis. Rotate older working HD into low-risk use.
The implication of this is that you should not trust a new hard drive completely (really never completely!) until it has been working perfectly for several months.
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no viable return for data extraction. HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.
    Hard drive failure and handling
The air cushion of air between the platter surface and the head is microscopic, as small as 3 nanometers, meaning bumps, jarring while in operation can cause head crash, scraping off magnetic particles causing internal havoc to the write surface and throwing particles thru the hard drive.
Hard drives are fragile in general, regardless, ... in specific while running hard drives are extremely fragile.
PDF: Bare hard drive handling generic instructions
    hard drive moving parts
Some of the common reasons for hard drives to fail:
Infant mortality (due to mfg. defect / build tolerances)
    Bad parking   (head impact)
Sudden impact   (hard drive jarred during operation, heads can bounce)
Electrical surge   (fries the controller board, possibly also causing heads to write the wrong data)
Bearing / Motor failure   (spindle bearings or motors wear during any and all use, eventually leading to HD failure)
Board failure   (controller board failure on bottom of HD)
Bad Sectors   (magnetic areas of the platter may become faulty)
    General hard drive failure

  • Toshiba external HDD not recognized by MacBook Air

I have a 1TB Toshiba USB3.0 external hard drive that I have been using for the last year or so to back up all my work data.
The drive works perfectly when I connect it to a PC (Dell desktop, laptop, HP laptop, etc.).  I even was using it last night on a PC.
However, my work recently replaced my PC with a MacBook Air, and the system will not recognize the drive.  USB port will power the drive (light comes on solid blue), but System Profile, Disk Utilities, and Finder do not recognize as attached.  Once again, I used last night without issue on a windows PC.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Asus external drive and macbook air

My sister in law recently purchased a macbook air from an online store that's affiliated with her work. Unfortunately, the apple products that they got their are too expensive. At the same time they are not new models but definitely brand new. I recently bought an asus external usb drive (SDRW-08D2S-U). I actually bought thiss o I could fix her other laptop that runs windows 8. I was wondering if this would work on OSX mavericks? You see the macbook air would arrive next week. I believe this macbook runs mountain lion. I plan to upgrade the software to osx mavericks once it gets delivered. Do you guys suggest buying a super drive instead for the macbook air?

Your questions don't really make any sense, especially the last one.
The Apple Superdrive is an external DVD drive. The Macbook Air is a Complete computer (except it does not have a DVD drive built in).
As to the drive it can be formatted to work with any operating system, Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, Solaris, Whatever.

  • HT1373 I am downloading a new HD movie and I just got an error message that says it won't play on my MacBook Air.  Why?

I just bought an HD movie from i-Tunes and downloading to the i-pad and MacBook Air, but I got an error message stating this movie would not play on the Air.
Would the SD version of the movie- is it simply b/c it is an HD?

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

  • Backup error- no write permission on external disk

Time Machine has been working fine until yesterday when I got the above error. I had write permission but root did not. Rebooting did not solve this problem. But ejecting my external disk and re-inserting it, did work and now everything is fine. Any idea what could have messed up permissions? I am posting this in case the same thing happens to another user-just eject your disk and re-insert it.

What filesystem is on that drive?

  • HT201269 How can I backup to store iphone on an external hard disk drive?

I tried to backup my iphone, my pc did not have the storage, and I don't know how to find the select for external HDD. I dont know if this is possible to backup to external drive. I lost some of my phone contacts and now the contact list is in some alphabetical order that I find difficult to read.
Can you tell me how to?
I have Itunes program saved on my laptop but there is not enough storage space available to backup all my iphone info to the laptop, that is why I want to direct the storage onto the HDD.
Do I need to download Itunes again and select save to my HDD to get the extra space?

You just have to find the backup file on your computer and moveor copy  the file to where you want it but remember if you want to restore from that backup itunes needs to be able to find it so you will need to make sure it is in its orginal location

  • Best external back-up drive for MacBook Pro

I ordered a WD 2 TB My Passport external drive from Staples. In the meantime one of you answered this question with the problems they are having with their software if using Maverick OX.
I am thinking of purchasing the LA Cie 2TB USB 3 Porsche Design P'9233. What are your thoughts? I believe this should be a plug and play and not need formatting-am I correct?
I don't want problems with a new drive and will return the WD as it is unopened.
    Thanks

It ststes to go to System Preferences, Time Machine and choose drive. It will automatically back-up to the drive of your choice.
If it actually does that, then it is formatted out of the box.  If the MBP does not recognize the drive, then it will have to be formatted.  Formatting a HDD is strait forward and not a lengthy process.  Here is a document regarding various format options:
